The “growth mindset” is often heralded as being a highly positive mode of thinking when it comes to personal development. We are told that a growth mindset can be the difference between success and failure.
This is applied to many areas of life, but that especially includes fitness. We are told to put in the work at the gym. To grind. To aim towards greatness. And we compare ourselves to people with incredible strength and fitness model physiques.
This can be useful for many people, to an extent. It can be motivating and help us to strive toward a goal. BUT it can also be destructive.
The problem comes when you begin to grow for the sake of growth. You’ve packed on a ton of muscle, so the only option is to pack on MORE, right? So, that you can be considered one of the best within the community. So that you can prove that you are capable of accomplishing great things.
But is that really why you started? And is it really what you want? When are you strong enough? Fit enough?
At some point, growth can become destructive. It can lead to obsession, to guilt, and to poor decisions.
And the perfect antidote? Self-expression. Watch the video for more!
What do you guys think? Can growth sometimes be damaging? Or does more growth always = more good??

Hey Bioneer, I was wondering if we would be able to have a chat about helping me make a routine that I could follow. We can talk about my goals and you can give me a base to start with and some tips. I've been doing a lot of research on different things but I'm not exactly sure how to combine them. Plz get back to me as soon as possible.

Bioneer is unlike any of the fitness ytbers ive come across. close second is calisthenicmovement, whom unfortunately have clickbait titles and thumbnails, but their advice is very in-depth, and useful, thats not mentioned anywhere else
however, Bioneer also focuses on other things along your life that are affected by fitness, as well as the psychological element of it, which in my opinion is just as important

Completely agree, exercise is a good servant but a bad master ; All forms of specialisation have diminishing returns. Chasing aesthetics and size can lead to a long term path of drug use and dysmorphia. Being an exceptional athletic specialist will almost always come with premature physical degradation from overuse. Obviously, each to their own in terms of what you want to live and die for, but certainly if you’re trying to ‘win’ the game of sustainable self actualisation, serving any growth- goal mindlessly will cause you to lose out on other parts yourself

I got overcome with the growth of my member. I reached a plateau and, instead of being satisfied, I kept trying. Although I knew I am in the top 2%, I felt small and kept trying to push through the ceiling. Body dysmorphia.
I have been working on changing my self image and shifting my efforts to exercise because it is more important.
We can get hyperfocused/obesessed with anything to our own detriment.

Ram Dass says something similar about refinement in our lives. Something to the effect of, "The method, too, must not be immune to change. For the day will come when you will have to modify it, rethink it, perhaps even let go of it." We can worship growth to our detriment and the undoing of its being a benefit for us to the point where it starts to work against us. This is more than good advice and more than a warning; this is wisdom.

Very well said, Adam. I would add that once you reach a certain age, expecting to get stronger or faster simply isn't realistic, and your goal should become to maintain your level. And some years later, you goal should be to decline as slowly as possible. I'm 43 and firmly in the latter phase :)

Maybe the counterpart to optimization is versatility. Most optimization at the pointy end of things involves discarding other interrelated skills and capacities - in your example its taking a human body towards only being good at low rep strength tasks, instead of having a body that is aesthetic, strong, resilient and healthy. Another might be becoming so entrenched in one professional skill set that youre unable to pivot when that industry is replaced.
Versatility soft skills might be things like praxis (the cycle of study and self development), emotional resilience (for facing difficult situations), relationship skills (so you dont have to face a challenge or set back alone), and self identity/values (for filtering out choices that aren't for you).

Adam, a masterpiece as usual and a brilliant ethos that we should all abide by. The “constant growth at all costs” mindset that has infested corporate culture should not percolate to our lives and goals as individuals. Find the movement patterns that make you happy, and keep doing it! Sounds so simple.
    Cheers,
    Nick Mathur

Thank you! 🙏🏻 And yes, I think more than a small amount of this comes from corporate greed. If they want to keep growing, they need to market the importance of perpetual growth to their customers. You can’t really sell anything to someone happy to climb trees for fun

I just discovered your channel the other day and have been really appreciating your videos, especially this one. As others have said, this perspective applies to so many aspects of life. I've been drumming for 38 years. The first 30 years were focused on getting better. But now with a family, career and other commitments, the time it takes to "get better" just isn't available. I've learned in this stage of life it's more about drumming for the joy of it. I still learn things here and there, but only if the learning process brings me joy. I celebrate those who push the boundaries of drumming, like Matt Gartska & others, but there's a freedom in simply enjoying what they do rather than feeling the need to surpass them. Thanks again!

Wow! When a lesson needs to be learned, the teacher will come. I've been thinking a lot about this concept lately in my training. I haven't really been chasing numbers in my training or focusing on progressive overload quite as much. My goals have shifted into being just making sure I can be active every single day. That in of itself, is a win. I learned a lot from your "If You're Moving, You're Improving" video and have adopted much of it's concepts.

  • @TheForgeWarrior

    Awesome video.
My thoughts are a correct growth mindset isn't one that is doing something at all costs. It's directed, purposeful, and tempered with constant introspection. If someone wants massive biceps, has gotten to their natural limit, studied the risks of taking PEDS, and makes an informed decision then so be it. While it's not a healthy choice its at least an informed one.
Seeking growth in any area of life with no purpose, introspection, and making decisions based off of emotional reactions is what leads to problems.

Great video. At the end of the day, it's really about doing something that feels meaningful to you, following your personal purpose. If you want to push yourself to the limit in something like bodybuilding or powerlifting, go for it. But if it's just a hobby, not your ultimate true passion, comparing yourself to people at the top and seeking constant growth is rather silly. Once it starts negatively impacting other aspects of your life - if it isn't what's truly most important to you, be content with and proud of what you've achieved, and move on to something new.

Over the years my goals for training have changed. First as a teenager was to get fit for girls (no success with girls 😂).
Later, I trained for pure brutal strength. Now I'm 47 years old, and my training is fitness, speed, and health. I have not quite reached the mid life crisis stage yet😂

I have been thinking about your motion/movement punk concept in the last few months. As a writer and future professional in cinematography, I wish to integrate this concept together with solarpunk ideas. Hope you keep developing Motion Punk in your videos!

Great Video, definitely thinking about my training right now. I guess it's pretty punk though 😅 Recently I finished reading the paper on "optimal theory" for motor skill learning and I would love to see a video on that, as I think it greatly relates to you content and is complex enogh to digest through a full video

Also playing is a great way to remind yourself what movement is or can be about. Just play with your dog, kids or each other. Even the process of coming up with your own game is great, not always playing soccer etc. I love the game of "never let the ball rest" for example, as everyone can do moves of there interest and skill level while still partaking in the same game
