Long Island City was the original terminal of the LIRR. Passengers going to Manhattan took ferry boats across the East River. The original LIRR ran from Long Island City to Greenport. Passengers going to Boston would take the ferry across Great South Bay to Stonington, CT. and change to train there. Info. from Wikipedia and other sources.

Wouldn't have cost Less to buy DMU cars for the unelecticfied sections,or even battery powered cars? The cars above must be labor intensive to operate and maintain. What happened to the M9 coaches that were supposed to be for non electric branches?
They should build a platform for the long island railroad train to stop at the kingshighway subway station that the mta new york city subway F train stops
I’m extremely new to LIRR rolling stock, but could someone explain to me why the DE30 is on one end of the C3 cars ? Does it have to do with certain routes not being electrified? Thanks In advance !
I'm not personally 100% sure, but if a train is shorter, a C3 would be at the end for a return trip. If the train is longer (8+ cars or so), another locomotive would be at the back. I've always wondered if the C3's have their own engines or it siphons power from the locomotive, but I think it has its own engines if it only is at the back of shorter trains.
99% of the branches that are used for these tracks are Montauk, Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson Branches, with one electric train, the 5:29pm Hunterspoint Avenue to Ronkonkoma train, which mainly are M7s.
LIRR stops in three terminals in New York City. Brooklyn Station (used to be called Flatbush Ave). Long Island City (a.k.a. Hunters Point station -- very near this video spot), and Penn station. All three lines go to Jamaica, Queens. They will soon be joined by a fourth Eastern Terminus, Grand Central (deep below existing Grand Central Station).

If you note the switches under the big red bridge, that's where the route from HP Av and the downgraded Montauk line from Jamaica via Richmond Hill merge, just before entering LIC. To get your bearings, on all the push-pull sets, the driving trailer is facing West, towards LIC, and the diesel locomotive is facing East, towards HP Av. \m/
Hunters Point is where the Ringling Brothers Circus Train would stop and unload, they may have walked over that crossing as they head through the 34th street midtown tunnel. You can also see the Empire State Building in the distance which is located on 34th street in Manhattan Island [NYC} we have video of some of the unloading there.

@@rollback27 The C3 draws it's power from the DE30. But one engine can only power 6 cars, so for 7+ cars it take 2 Engines.
