  • When we're playing music, the notes are the most important thing, right? Wrong! Whatever musical instrument you play, the notes are far less important than the rhythm! Rhythm is what makes us connect to music.
Let's go through why rhythm is more important and some ways to stop getting too obsessed over the notes!

I've been playing the sax for only seven years now and I've been practicing to approach arpeggio notes, enclosures, substitutions, alterations on the dominant, by the time you are done you have played every single note. There are only 12 notes anyway... Last year I had the chance to attend a jazz clinic and some kids that are semipros showed up... I was astonished to see how confident they were on their playing, loud and proud, no doubts, playing "wrong notes" constantly but they sounded like a bomb.
    Nice tip!

Exactly - any note can be placed anywhere as long as it's set up/resolved correctly, and confident playing almost always sounds better than unconfident but theoretically correct playing. I hope you enjoyed the clinic!

Interesting. I'll try some of the practice suggestions. I recall years ago when I realized that rhythm is the most important part of melody. I demonstrated it to people as follows: I'd drum the melody of the theme song of the TV show "Bonanza" on the table. Everyone could correctly identify it - despite there being no notes at all.

I recall seeing the Cannonball Adderly Quintet on an old Debbie Reynolds tv special back in 1960. At the time I played bass in a wedding band. The next morning, I told the guys in our band that we need to be listening to this and other emerging jazz groups!

@@joshwakeham , I’ve been playing jazz for 38 years, but find it valuable to scour around UA-cam and discover content like yours. Firstly; your video content has acted as a reminder to slip slide on II Vs. This used to be a common part of my language, which this morning I have revisited. Secondly; I tend to voice the dominant early, leaning heavily on the old altered language. Delaying the move from the II to the V (playing over the bar line in reverse to my norm ) will break old habits. So; thank you Josh..
Also, you are very engaging and humorous.. ( I’m happily married btw) lol.
