An excellent lesson to learn, and it also proves that improvement takes time and effort and commitment.
It's good to see you back in the public eye.

I hadn't thought about that side of it!

This is such a great video. I hate the way I sound, although I know I've got better recently. However, I've not had the nerve to record myself! Great to see you back by the way; hope all is well.

Thanks, Francis, it's good to be back! The first few times recording and listening back to yourself are definitely the hardest, but it does get easier!

10 years ago it may of been a bit random but it was played with fire in your belly.
Ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice..

You're right there - there was definitely a lot of energy in my playing back then!

I can hear the Kenny Garrett influence in your old solo and it wasn't really that bad. I'm certain you are now a much better player but there was a lot of energy and the audience was certainly behind you. It's actually quite hard for us to gauge your improvement from listening to it because you are now playing in a completely different genre. Maybe you can find us an older attempt at "There Is No Greater Love" or at least a similar standard as a better comparison.

That is a fair point, I guess the main differences that are immediate to me, regardless of the different style, are the improved time feel, tone/intonation, and the content within my melodic lines (as in the lines are less random). A more bebop style recording would be a more direct comparison, but I don't have any video footage of me playing that stuff back then, and decided that video footage would be better than audio only. But you are right - me playing bop 10 years ago would provide more obvious insight and a more direct comparison

I thought your playing from 10 years ago was rather interesting and energetic, 'out there'; very new-age Art Pepper-ish. Good tips on recording yourself playing. I've been doing it for quite a while now and my playing has benefitted immensely from it. I actually like my own sound now!

I was really into Kenny Garrett and the intensity he brings to his solos, and I think that's the vibe I was attempting to get!
