For my money the best player on the planet. Just my opinion. It’s not just speed or technique but sound and feel which for my money is what music is all about!👍
Watched him from almost the beginning after seeing a UA-cam ad about his lessons and website like somewhere around 8ish yrs ago. I feel like I've been watching a character develop from a TV series when you binge watch several season in a row. Kind of like your channel. I've watched yours for a while as well and you have been doing the same. You both do fantastic work in your own right to help and encourage fellow saxophonist to keep the fires of saxophoning roaring and stimulate the need and desire to be better at the instrument. Keep up the great work.
Saxologic! You're absolutely right! Also, enjoying your melodic line work through JLV. Hope both you guys had a great Christmas, and really looking forward to learning from you both in the new year.
It is great to hear you use the word "joyful" when talking about Cannonball. I have a playlist of Cannonball's music and I'll play it when I'm vibrating low. It will almost always make me feel better. It just makes me smile. I get so much out of being pointed to great recordings by pro players and hearing what they love about them, what I should be paying attention to. That type of lesson adds so much to my playing. Thanks Bob and feel free to get as "woo woo" as needed. I speak fluent "woo woo." lol
At Berklee (waaaay back in the '80s) saxophonist Bill Evans came to speak. At one point he talked about practicing physically imitating his idols -- lots of movement and raised horn a la '80s Sonny Rollins, standing stock still and slightly hunched over a la Joe Henderson, etc etc.)
I used to be a good tennis player, good enough to get paid for teaching. I ended up with knee and hip issues so now I play the tenor sax instead and I'm loving it signing up for any jazz stage. Next month I will be with Chad LB... Can't wait...
1978 or so I was at North Texas studying with Dennis Diemond....(Student of Donald Sinta) and he made me read the same Book! It blew me away then and still does!
“I hear whaaat you said And it sticks in my head” - Jon Hendricks’ lyrics applied to Cannon’s solo on ‘Freddie Freeloader’. Amen Bob - “Bounce”, “swagger”, “JOY” and don’t forget SOUL! Listening to Cannonball Adderley will absolutely make you a better human being - it’s a fact!
Great advice as always, Bob! I'm a multi-instrumentalist, and whenever I play I think of musicians who inspire me - not to imitate them, but to take bits & pieces of their styles and put my own spin on them to keep improving and developing. Justin Stanton has great phrasing on keyboards, Maz has incredible dexterity & breath control on trumpet, and Keita is....well, he's Keita! :) When I hear you play, I'm drawn to your amazing tone and fantastic melodic lines - and the solos are all scorchers too! It's all super impressive to me. Thanks for the vlogs, and have a great time in Europe with your band and the Pups.
Gerald albright is a 100% carbon copy of cannonball- that line/lick is straight Gerald. Check out his playing...Live at Birdland west, and Giving Myself to You are 2 albums that showcase this quite well. He's a "smooth" player, but his base is heavy blues and pseudo bebop. Gerald stated that Cannonball was his biggest inspiration.
Thank's a lot ! Ive been transcribing a lot by ear this year but I still need to analyse these... Also I really feel like going and dig some canonball now !
Aww thanks Bob, that was a great snippet of inspiration for me. I love Cannonball, and I enjoy the Inner Game books, so to combine them both was spot on for me.
Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet) has an infectious feel to me. I love playing 2-4 bars of his over and over. Same for Sonny Rollins, he has sooo much style, I can just be blown away constantly by just repeating his small phrases. Oh, I've also been enjoying Art Pepper lately.
As an amateur saxophonist, I always struggled with sight reading. Never really got good at it and to this date it feels like a deficiency - not really being able to explain (in terms of music theory) what you are doing, always makes me somewhat insecure. I always rely heavily on my hearing when learning or transcribing anything on the saxophone. The joy I get from listening to the way a song is delivered, and trying to nail the timing, the feel, etc of that specific delivery, makes up for all the insecure feelings. So thank you for this video, to me it underlines the real importance and value of thorough listening when transcribing a tune, even more than the thorough knowledge of music theory. And thank goodness I’m an amateur…😉
I read Tim Gallwey's "Inner game of music" way back in the late 80's, and took a lot from it. I'm kinda surprised you're reading the tennis one tbh Bob, but I guess the approach is the same.
Great idea about getting the feel of our mentors. It's a pity that there are no dates in Spanish lands this fall... I suppose that your last visit here has not left a good taste in your mouth concerning the epidemic situation. Difficult to make the jump to neighboring countries this time, so I hope you will come back soon ;)
Allow to focus on what most interests you!! 👌Seems like a great book the tennis 🎾 one. I would transfer it to other things and practise actions too. Will check out the cannonball music and get a ticket for Munich show 🎷🎷😁!
Do you like to take these transcribed licks through multiple keys? I would assume no since you said you are not trying to add vocabulary through transcribing. Thanks for the great content!
To this day, still the most genuine, real saxophone vlogs on UA-cam. All of your videos are gems
Perfect comment

You pretty much just explained why we all watch you
“I’m checking it out up a half step because why not.” I love that
5:29 "Allow yourself to focus on what..." [reaches out to adjust camera focus] - I loved that part the most 😂
man, he LOVED to play that "side D" on his King, love that timbre

Wow I agree 100%! Cannonball’s mix of blues and bebop is infectious! The best!

still coming back to this & learning more everytime. Thank you!
“I’m learning it up a half step because why not.” Respect!

I was also just reading the inner game of tennis last night. What a gem of a book. Just reading and letting the words sink in make me more mindful.
Wow. It is always a privilege to hear you talk about saxophone philosophy and practice. You are one of the legends!!!!
Today I learned "How to swing in jazz" is similar to "How to swing in tennis"👍
Brilliant!
Cannonball - my fav...and those lines sound killer on tenor as well. You're really making it happen over there, Bob!
Thanks for this awesome material.
When your right your right
Great vid! That book was a paradigm shift for me.
I actually learnt that solo on guitar a while ago and it was such a fun one. Quite challenging to try to get the feel right.
The UA-cam algorithm just delivered another great musician who I inexplicably had never come across before. A great day✔️

As a clodhopper guitarist I get it completely. Thanks for the focus.
Thanks Bob, every time I watch/listen to your VLOG.makes me want to practice more, thank you! Great interpretation of Cannonball s feel..
Hey Bob, not on telegram but will figure it out. Thank you
GREAT PERSPECTIVE

Amazing video, thanks for sharing your wisdom with us!
Thank's a lot ! Ive been transcribing a lot by ear this year but I still need to analyse these... Also I really feel like going and dig some canonball now !

Just finished that book! Great Read
Whatever tech you pulled out to transpose that record into Gb blew me away for some reason, that's gotta be so handy
Thats how you develop being original and your own sound.
Cannonball - yes! Always loved his bits in Flamenco Sketches.
GREAT! thx so much again!
Welcome back bob :)

“Exuberant” is the adjective I use in reference to Adderley’s musical expression.
Great advice 🌟

The thing to recognize is that the Inner Game of Tennis came first. And, it really says it all so gracefully.

great job keep it up
Great video as always. Thanks a lot. That Cannonballs solo is one of my favorites. I transcribed it few years ago 😍🔥😎🤓
Allow to focus on what most interests you!! 👌Seems like a great book the tennis 🎾 one. I would transfer it to other things and practise actions too. Will check out the cannonball music and get a ticket for Munich show 🎷🎷😁!
I hear you Bob Cannonball is just so bubbly! I got to get back in your class, I'm in it but need to continue.
What is that app that is looping the recordings?!??!! I need it plz
Interesting take Bob. I just missed you at Pine Knob here in Michigan. 😐
What playback app are you using to transpose?
2 vlogs in the same week? Incredible.
what is the transcription app you use
What is your audio setup there Bob? Looking to upgrade my setup here!
Do you like to take these transcribed licks through multiple keys? I would assume no since you said you are not trying to add vocabulary through transcribing. Thanks for the great content!
What is the music player app on your ipad?
What Cannonball side is this from? Is this from Poll Winners?
Don’t overwater George! Once a week is best.
thanks! yes, I've come to realize he can go two weeks no prob
what app do you use to slow down and transpose songs?

I prefer a cocktail no cel phones and being grateful I discovered jazz on AM radio....
Yeah man! Cannonball rules! I‘d even think he played those eighth notes more „shuffled“, if you know what I mean… 😉
Hi Bob Reynolds, or anyone else reading. I’m an upright bassist in HS. I’d like to know what app you’re using to loop that music? Useful!!
Hii, very useful thoughts! 💛
Does anyone know how that looping program is called?
its called amazing slow downer:))
Hey Bob. Love this video; Cannonball is awesome. What app do you use for looping?
Thanks. Memorizing music: can this app help?

I honestly don't know how Cannonball isn't everyone's favorite saxophone player.
I can't believe I was named after Bob Reynold's plant....
Curious George.

Be a good little monkney.
Proud to be 999th like of this video :)
Next title update : you won’t believe what I hear on this cannonball aderall

I've been watching few videos by this guy, and always hear "cannibal utterly"...
Nice channel though. Thanks!
Good conversation. Have you read, "The Art of Practicing" by Madeline Bruser? Love Swinging!
I haven’t. Good one?
