  • Watch as we replace our original rear MOPAR shocks with Bilstein B6 Shock Absorbers. Countless other UA-cam videos have shown that they begin to lose their life earlier than expected. The decision was made that since we are heading back out West and won't have a place to do the DIY as easily and we are off-road quite a bit, it was time to replace the shocks. Our 2018 159" Extended had just over 50k miles when this DIY was completed. After driving on these now for over 2,000 miles, we can feel the difference in the ride. The rebound is much better and the Sumo Yellows continue to help with sway.
While replacing the shocks, I explain that this is a great time to check the thickness of the brake pads and visually inspect the brake lines and wires.
    Shocks: Bilstein B6-2424550
Purchased from Autozone online and used a promo code that they do monthly. Normal retail was $195.98 and 20% off saved us $39.20= $155 total. We paid the extra $4.99 to get 2-day shipping.
    Tools needed:
21mm socket for lug nut removal.
19mm 12-point socket for shock absorber bolts.
Alternatively you can use an E24 Torx Socket instead of the 19mm socket.
Torque wrench with range up to 150ft./Lbs.
    Socket wrench
Floor jack rated for your van's weight.
Wood blocks or jack stand rated for your van's weight.
    Torque requirements:
Upper shock absorber bolt - 122ft./Lbs
Lower shock absorber bolt - 118ft./Lbs
Lug Nuts - 146ft./Lbs. ( I only torque to 90ft./Lbs and check regularly)

Nice explanation for what and how to replace the shocks.
The shocks on my van were really weak from the factory.
So I replaced them with Monroe load leveler, coil over shocks.
They helped some, but not as much as I wished.
    👍

Thanks for the how to video. 21 Travato 59gl. I installed the Bilstens and super springs ssa11 helper springs at the same time. Your video helped a lot so thank you for doing that. I like the results I got and am happy with the investment. Next up is transmission filter and fluid change. I’m at 37K. Will reference your diy on that one too. Am now a subscriber.

I agree with your Sumo assessment. I installed front spacers and rear bump stops on my PM and it significantly reduced the sway while operating the van. Although it stiffened the suspension a bit, it has a much better stable ride on highway.

Glad it helped and thanks for subscribing. I'm still on our original front springs/struts and so far it seems fine but the rears were such an easy diy that I may have done it a bit early. I've seen some owners have worn out rear shocks as low as 30k miles so you never really know until you remove them. I replaced the coolant reservoir in June 2024 since it began to leak a small amount around 40k miles. Since then, no more coolant smell.

@@CorndogCaravan Thanks for taking the time to give additional inputs. I changed my front struts at 50k miles, but not sure if the shop screw me over, they seemed nervous about something at pick up time, it's sort of unusual struts to go out that early. My rear shocks are original at 90k now, definitely overdue for replacement. One thing I'd recommend is installing rear Sumo Springs and replacing the stock. This has made a significant difference in ride quality and helped significantly my poor reer shocks. Thanks again for your time.

Thank you for sharing! A great video!!! I just replaced the stock shocks by Bilstein B6 for my Promaster 3500 following your video yesterday. Hope the replacement will improve the driving as others. Where did you get the torque numbers?

Hey great video. Learned a lot from all your maintenance videos. Can I ask is 90 ft/lbs what you torque your lugs to? Thanks.

That's what I use but the spec is around 150-160. Make your own decision on it.

@@CorndogCaravan thanks! And I enjoyed your oil change vid as well. I’ve got a Coachmen Nova 2023. Have accomplished many mods but our fav was simplist of all, the sliding door bump-stop. 👍🏻
