This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new 2022 Hyundai Kona small SUV. What’s new for 2022? The exterior of the Kona is sharper and sleeker with new wheel designs, a bolder grille, new front and rear styling, increased cargo space and rear seat legroom. The N Line model we are test driving looks sportier than ever with body colour cladding, an N Line front bumper fascia and grille, as well as, 18” alloy wheels. The base Kona engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, gone is the 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Optional FWD and AWD. We are testing the N Line with a turbocharged 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, 195 horsepower up from 175 and 195 lb-feet of torque. It has standard AWD in Canada with independent rear suspension and FWD gets solid rear axle suspension. In the US, you can add AWD for $1,500 USD and $2,000 CAD. For 2022, the 1.6L turbocharged engine is only available on the N Line model, which is a change from 2021. This engine was an option on more trims last year. The N Line comes with plenty of standard features but to get LED headlights, LED taillights and a sunroof, you’ll have to add the Ultimate package for $5,600 CAD or Tech package for $2,500 USD. The Kona gets a redesigned dashboard giving it a more modern look. It now has a bigger standard touchscreen going from 7 to 8 inches with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. An optional 10.25 “ digital driver display, a 10.25” touchscreen, wireless charger, an electronic parking brake are now available for 2022 as well as, more cargo space and second row legroom. The new N Line trim we’re testing comes with black seats with red stitching, a black headliner, metal pedals, N logo on the seats, steering wheel and shifter giving it a sporty look. To get a lot of the extra features on the N Line trim, you have to add the Ultimate Package for $5,600 CAD or Tech Package for $2,500 USD. That’s where you’ll find the 10.25” touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto a head-up display, leatherette seating surfaces with red stitching, wireless charging pad, head-up display, ventilated front seats, electronic parking brake, a 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and highway driving assist. That brings you to $33,699 CAD /$28,200 USD. Add another $1,500 USD to the price if you want AWD in the US, it’s standard in Canada on the N Line trim.

The interior looks good...not sold on the changes to the exterior. Odd configurations with the wireless CarPlay-- large screen trade off. I just want to say...I really don't see that wireless charging is a great feature if you have to plug in to use apple CarPlay anyway.

I ordered a 2023 Kona N Line base model in misty jungle, biggest upgrade for 2023 I think is the standard 10.25" touch screen, I just couldn't see the value in the ultimate package for $5600 cad, I might as well get a cx-30 turbo for not much more, In my opinion, the 2023 Kona N Line is the best value for your money!

We owned three Kia Souls (Kona's twin) and loved them all. Our last was the Exclaim turbo with the DCT. We loved the performance, but were disappointed with the DCT transmission in real world use. It always lets you down at the worst possible time. It will lag when you need it the most. DCTs are prone to overheating in challenging conditions (not things 99.9% of buyers will ever do - think TFL on a rugged AWD trail). The choice of a DCT ruins the Soul and Kona performance models for us. But as small CUV and EV lovers, we can't wait for Kia and Kona to some day release AWD electric versions.

8spd wet clutch in 2022 Kona N sounds like a good option (worthy trade-off in-place of AWD)… My 2021 Kona Luxury with 2.0L is capable going up he slippery stuff. The engine only needs to rev up to 2000rpm ( while locked in first gear) for the steepest hills.

    • @jrs9264

DCT lag is product of reduced engine output in hot weather as the fuel mixture is leaned out. I use plus instead of regular gas in hot weather and no problems on 2 Hyundai vehicles with that engine/transmission combination.

this crossover does not have a CVT, it has a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) ....a DCT has gears like a manual transmission and 2 clutches for fuel economy and swift gear changes ....one clutch operates gears 1, 3, 5, and 7 ....the other one operates gears 2, 4, 6, and the Reverse ....a computer decides when it's time to shift a gear, so DCT is a form of an automatic transmission ....the behavior of a DCT is so close to that of a manual transmission that if you hang a DCT car uphill (let the DCT hold the car weight based on the idle rpms), the clutches will wear out fast ....as they would with a manual transmission where the driver uses the clutch pedal to hang the car uphill (keeping the car from rolling back without touching the brakes or the gas pedal, but simply by pressing/releasing the clutch pedal by the right amount - provided the car idles at a healthy rpm level) ....also, when the traffic light turns green, don't floor the gas pedal, because DCT won't honor your desire to fly ....the advantage of DCT is fuel economy and fast smooth gear changes, while in motion

Nissan ruined the reputation for CVTs, the Toyota and Honda versions are more reliable, but you should change the transmission fluid fairly often. I wait for the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine at the library, to see what thousands of owner surveys say for reliability and owner satisfaction. Buying the first year of a new design is risky, even if they reused older parts that were reliable in other vehicles.

It took me years of feedback to convince Hyundai to include HD radio as standard, as well as instrument cluster with black letters/numbers on bright or white background. I also continue to tell them to ditch the antique torsion El cheapo rear suspension. I bought the 2020 limited 1.6 turbo with awd, just to avoid the junk torsion beam rear. I don't need or use the Blue Link, and would have preferred a temp donut spare instead of the virtually useless bubblegum kit. Bought one via ebay. Still working to get them to bring over i20 N and Bayon from Europe, as well as rear a/c vents and less hard plastic touch points throughout the Kona. And, yes, I would also avoid any CVT ! 😣🙄

Has Hyundai improved their 7 speed DCT? There were so many complaints with the 1.6T / DCT on the prior gen Tucson that Hyundai removed that combo and replaced it with the 2.4L / 6 speed auto in the 2019 refresh year.

This Kona exemplifies what's wrong with CUV design today. The "bumper" cross section (if that even exists anymore) and the headlights are low but the hood line and the LED DRL's look artificially high, like they piled on more car on top of the engine the way you pile on more whip cream on top of a sundae. If the majority of CUV's were built like the hatchbacks that they actually are, the styling and proportions would clean up so much. Also: looking at you, Toyota.

Cross trek, HRV with a new dash and their 1.6t engine, or this puppy is prob all Canadian families need. Think u should do family shopping and a car, showing real life usage. No one does this. The transmission feels jerky (hard pull) if you fully depress the gas pedal from 1st to 2nd gear, if you do a normal acceleration the shifting is very smooth (again from 1st to 2nd gear) after 3rd the shifting feels very smooth.

My 2021 Hyundai Kona was at Reliable Hyundai in Springfield Missouri for over 1 1/2 years. It only had 6500 miles on it and under full warranty. It had a transmission issue (s). The dealership experience was horrible. The excuse, week after week, month after month, was that the couldn’t get approval from Hyundai Customer Care. Only after getting an attorney involved, did they finally take the car back. During that time, they didn’t give me a loaner vehicle. I spent over $16,000 for 1 1/2 years of rental car expenses. I was expecting full reimbursement, but they only reimbursed $4000. What a scam! I finally went down the street and bought a Toyota Camry. I learned a lesson. I hope you avoid what I experienced.

Here we loose the 1.0T manual.
Still retain the 2.0, but with a CVT.
The 1.6T gets a Dual Clutch, Executive and N-Line. The N-Line doesn't get the front fog lights. But gets, adaptive cruise control, keyless access with stop start button, blind spot monitoring, driver's side lumbar support, leather seats, LED headlights, wheel sizes stays the same, and a R80k increase in price.
Would I go for the N-Line, nah, the Executive makes a better proposition if the 1.6T is the only way to go. Once again, the 2 seconds lost on the 2.0 isn't a hardship for me for the 0-100km/h acceleration, neither is the 15km/h top speed, the 17" over 18" makes it easier to change if I get a flat. Just because the duration of time it's going to cost me to call for a breakdown, I'll be done with the change. The Stop Start button would be nice, but the R80k less for the 1.6T Executive from N-Line makes more sense, my age and duration of driving having become more relaxed the additional R50k saving to the 2.0 Executive makes even bigger financial sense.
The fly in the oil would be, if the EV was available here, I'd be picking the smaller 40kWh battery pack. I also don't do that long distances anymore. If it isn't under 200km away, why bother, and I would stretch it to 400km just because the province I live in has the best scenic drives. The better the views, the slower the traffic speed 80-100km/h, the less entertaining the more the limit is at 120km/h.
Did I just give myself a mind wedgy thinking of this, or make an argument for a relaxed driver?
