My first new car in 1990 was a VW Jetta. I liked it so much that I wanted to buy another. I went into the dealership and none of the salespeople would give me the time of day. No worries, I said, there is more than one VW dealership in town. Went to the second one and no one would even look at me. Ended up buying a Camry instead. When it was time to trade in the Camry, my first stop was at the VW dealership. I walked in, kicked a few tires, waited around and again, no one acknowledged my existence. Ended up buying another Camry. Needless to say, I have never bought another VW. In all my years, I have never had this happen at another dealership. Its a shame really. They probably would have had me as a customer for life.
different culture perhaps? a lot of people go to the dealership just to look for a while but don't want to be hassled by sales people. I'm thinking maybe you should have just walked up to a salesman and asked him questions.
I had this same problem at a Hyundai dealership when I tried to trade in my Excel to buy an Elantra. I was ignored and never bought a Hyundai again. That was THEIR lost opportunity.
That's how I prefer it. When I'm ready to negotiate I go to the front desk and ask for a rep. I don't like to be bothered when I'm just looking around.
Nice review on both...I am a long time VW lover...its just that DSG tranny is a no go....so I am seriously thinking of leasing a manual GLI...my Sainted Mother taught me to drive on her 1962 Rambler AMC 3 on the tree, first wife had a MGB and my second wife a Mazda RX-7...so I love the manuals!

A gently used Audi A4 seems like a better buy compared to a new Jetta GLI. Better interior build quality, basically the same engine, choice of AWD. For example - looking at a 2021 A4 Quattro premium plus s line, 261 hp engine, 19k miles advertised for $26,428 USD. If you like wagons you can opt for the all road version. If you go for the 1.5 just get the lowest trim. Higher trim is priced too closely to the GLI but it has no mechanical goods (independent suspension, big brakes, diff, EA888 Gen3 + DQ381) GLI's 18-in wheels are forged too and weigh less than 18 lbs each
I considered the GLI (I had number of VWs)... but, I went with a 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring instead. No transmission, no serpentine belts, more low end torque, better fuel economy, no haptic controls, almost the same HP and a bit cheaper in price. I did have to give up the DCC to go to the Civic.
It’s so “ funny “ that you guys made this Post as my son just returned from his 2 weeks on at Site C yesterday and when I picked him up he mentioned he was thinking about getting a Jetta / GLI. I would love to have a GLI with a manual as I learned how to drive, took my license test and drove a standard transmission for the first 17 years of my driving lifetime. A couple concerns. I am 6 foot2 and a non longer trim 275 lbs while my son is 6 foot 4 and around 195. How’s the “room “ for a bigger than average person? Also, has Volkswagen ditched the Direct Injection only system to something like Toyota’s half Direct and half through the intake injection? 158 hp and almost 200 lb feet of torque sounds good. I don’t think you gave a torque number for the GLI 2 litre but 228 hp sounds yummy. When you give the litres per 100 kms number and the miles per gallon, is that a USA gallon. With a Canadian gallon being basically 10% bigger the fuel consumption sounds even better. Of the last 3 vehicles I’ve owned I have never had much difficulty achieving or exceeding the manufacturer’s numbers by 1-2 mpg and although I don’t drive like I did in my Camaro 40+ years ago it’s nic3 to know I can if I want. P.S. When Zack had that Motoring show quite some time ago I suggested that vehicles should also be “ reviewed “ at night to get an idea about lighting and visibility. Many modern cars/trucks have pathetic low beams even some of the ones with factory LEDs.
To me it is. GLI is build in Mexico and has way too much hard plastic in the interior. The rear of the Jetta GLI has hard plastics everywhere, lack rear AC vents and there are no 12V or USB ports. My MK8 GTI was built in Germany, much nicer, more solid, better engine, far superior chassis, far more refined and power engine EA888 gen 4 and the seats and cabin 2 levels above the Jetta/GLI. Rear seats are spacious, excellent headroom and feature AC vents and 2 rear USB-C ports. The GTI is a no brainer choice over the Mexican made GLI.
Fully loaded GTI costs about $7K more than a fully loaded GLI. I keep hearing that DCC is a must have, with the GLI you get DCC at a price which is equal to the base GTI with DCC. So thats my dilemma.
My biggest problem with all compact sedans is that if you want a higher trim with memory power seats it costs $35,000+ CAD , you can get a mid-size sedan for $40,000 so not a huge difference

@@nsbioy is not really only VW or a unilateral decision on their part. This is EU legislation being shoved down everyone’s throats in the car industry. Manual transmissions simply are unable to meet the ridiculously high emissions standards of Euro 7. Also you have to realize that VW Group of America lobbied hard to VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany to make an exception for the US and Canada to offer a manual transmission MK8 Golf R (Which has never been available in Europe by the way). VW made the exception and build MK8 Golf Rs between 2022-2024 with 6 speed manuals for the US market only, even though the MK8 Golf, GTI and Golf R are all manufactured at VW Plant Wolfsburg in Germany. So blame the overreaching EU politicians and climate activists that permeate inside world governments and drive policy to eradicate cars as we know them.

@@Pamlicojdjdj1487 There are NO EPA laws that concern manual transmissions. In EUROPE there were PROPOSED increases to fuel economy that would have made it HARDER to meet them with a manual transmission. When the accelerator and gear choice are linked to a human brain vs a computer, the car is able to perform in a way that is less, cough cough, economical. Those PROPOSED laws were rescinded in Europe. VW trots that out as an excuse, but it is not actually true. What is most likely the TRUTH is that VW didn't want another parts bin. They wanted more money in their pocket and it was just CHEAPER for THEM to build a single transmission. The manual transmission was 35-50% take rate on the Golf depending on model and trim in the USA. Discontinuing it makes zero sense for that kind of take rate. VW ASSUMED the proposed law in Europe would BECOME law, when in reality it didn't happen. Honda still offers manual transmission and Acura INTRODUCED manual transmission in the Integra. So please don't say there is some EPA mandate to eliminate manual transmissions. It is simply untrue.

Gorgeous cars! Both of them! Too bad i'm over $100,000 in medical debt, so my credit is shot.
GLI or Civic Hybrid 2025. Which one would you choose?
How good is manual GLI and what are real world highway mpgs? I drive 124km highway to work and back. Wish they still offer manual in 1.5l as the 24 many got over 48mpg
Andrea is a madman!😂❤
How bad is the rev hang? Better than the Civic Si?
I think the problem
Is you😂
They did you a favour. VW products are utter garbage. Horrendous reliability and cheap everything.
Is it better than honda Civic 2025? Also, how is reliability ?? Would love to see a comparison video between Jeeta and Honda Civic.
Thanks for the video.
Will the regular jetta be manual in other markets
How do you feel about the Monterey Blue on the GLI? Seems like VW should have gone with a sportier blue? Maybe Atlantic Blue or Dusk Blue?
Impressive, and love that price point. Give me the GLi with a standard. But would really like to see a wagon version.
Curious if motormouth agrees or disagrees.
Nice video. I hate black wheels too! They make it look like someone stole your hubcaps. Need the contrast of a silver wheel with a black tire.
They also make your tires look old and/or dirty most of the time.
Nice video. You guys always make me happy to drive a VW. Such a fun little sedan. 👍🏼 Wish they’d offer with 4Motion. Who needs an A3 🤣🤣🤣
And yes, black wheels are cool 😎
Shame they got rid of the regular Golf.
There is no business case for a base golf in North America. Before they made the Jetta larger there was hardly a case for VW in North America.
People in NA are obsessed with interior space. They want larger and larger boxes on wheels. That's why they got rid of Golf and gave us Taos.
@@janoycresnova9156it’s not bigger than the golf it’s just lifted. People find hatchbacks and wagons ugly but if you lift them then they love them 😵💫
@@devn3813 how true. I have a vw golf alltrack best car ever. Better than any silly suv. sold like crazy in west, but not in midwest. I would literally go to europe and buy one and bring it back to us if possible, when my alltrack dies.
@@ricome169 if they still made the alltrack I would buy one.
If you go for the 1.5 just get the lowest trim. Higher trim is priced too closely to the GLI but it has no mechanical goods (independent suspension, big brakes, diff, EA888 Gen3 + DQ381)
GLI's 18-in wheels are forged too and weigh less than 18 lbs each
thanks for the review but my 2024 gli has wireless carplay and android auto did they remove it
I considered the GLI (I had number of VWs)... but, I went with a 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring instead.
Is there a shortage of these models in the U. S.? It’s rare to see any VW sedans at my local dealer in VA. They’re loaded with Atlas, Taos and Tiguan.
They sell before they hit the lots. Small cars are hard to find these days from any brand
Well because the typical US VW buyers only wants cheap and big SUVs or 3 length cuts of the same sausage
Not perfect, but as you guys mention, a solid choice in the segment. Looks like good value in all the trims.
Hey Zack is your gti really creaky and rattley over bumps????
No
I like the piano-black.
Is there a significant difference in build quality between the GLI and GTI?
GTI also has a substantial power bump over GLI.
@@janoycresnova9156 100%
Fully loaded GTI costs about $7K more than a fully loaded GLI. I keep hearing that DCC is a must have, with the GLI you get DCC at a price which is equal to the base GTI with DCC. So thats my dilemma.
@@janoycresnova9156 Newer engine and turbo too (GLI uses EA888 gen 3) and GTI uses EA888 gen 4 with a new turbo
Based Jetta looks like a great Sign and Drive lease vehicle.
My biggest problem with all compact sedans is that if you want a higher trim with memory power seats it costs $35,000+ CAD , you can get a mid-size sedan for $40,000 so not a huge difference
thank goodness they didn't go with a CVT ...
Where do you get your prices from? When I check the VW website it's always $1000 more.
QUESTION: on the base model Jetta, is there a tire well, so that a spare tire could be added at the new owners expense?
Not sure, we never saw the base model but I would assume so.
yes there is. I added one on mine.
Would you get GLI or GTI?
We own a GTI, so GTI.
@@janoycresnova9156 GLI because stick. (Not to mention a back seat that comfortably fits adults and a trunk that fits way more than the hatch when the rear seats are up.)
MK8 GTI every day and twice on Sundays over any GLI. So
Much better in every respects. It costs more for a reason
@@Pamlicojdjdj1487 WHAT'S false? My OPINION? Sure, the GTI is better, but the GLI is more practical. TRUE. And I'll take ANY car with a stick over ANY car with an automatic. Also true. So pho cough.
@@Pamlicojdjdj1487 Yeah: My way around the insult-flagging algorithms. So, assuming you even know how to properly pronounce "pho," go say "pho cough" to yourself a few times in a mirror.
Can you elaborate more on the Dual Clutch transmission. I test drove the Taos and it’s a bit jerky.
DSG and manual are the same price? Interesting price strategy. I wonder what the split is in sale. :)
I applaud VW for keeping the manual but thiink it was a mistake to drop it in the GTI.
How quite it is?
There are meds and therapists that can help with piano black anxieties.😂
Wow. great value.
If the GLI had AWD, I would seriously consider it.
That there's no manual GTI is nuts. (hope this only applies to North America)
Globally
Take up rate for manual GTI was very low. Also manual transmissions no longer meet stringent Euro emissions requirements.
@@Pamlicojdjdj1487just under 50% manual in the USA. Not a good move by VW. I have to keep my gti as long as possible now instead of buying a new one
GLI looks a bit sharper, but would have to drive both of them to determine whether it's worth an extra $4k USD from the top trim Jetta. That seems like a pretty excellent value.
@@jonj77 Only worth it if you want a stick.
GLI pricing is very close to the Elantra N. Tough call.
EN is about $5k more in Canada. Could be closer in USA?
Does the Jetta have the stereo that Zack likes from VW? I know they usually have two choices.
Nope, it has beats
How is the stereo compared to the current GTI / Golf R?
Beats sucks. GTI/Golf R have superior Harmon Kardon system, 480 watts and 10-Speakers. No contest
Aren’t people complaining about the HK in the current GTI / Golf R though?
@@edwhlam I am not one of them. I love the system. Remember source material is also important. I also have the Harmon Kardon system in my Arteon Premium, 700 watts, 12-Speakers and it is fabulous. Some people are nauseating and picky beyond belief when it comes to car audio. These systems are only $500-$700 over the awful base systems and the sound quality is night and day. At the end of the day, the sound called audiophiles can shove and spend $60000 on a bespoke audio system if they wish.
The HK isn't great, better than Beats but Fender in the last GTI was way better

Rear vents is another thing I would like to see in these cars. Especially in 2024+
Agreed, but the Jetta hasn't had them since the MK5, and manufacturers have been yanking them out of nearly all US-market family sedans for years now to save a few bucks per car. Shameful, but that's how it goes.
It’s a small cabin. They are really not necessary and for vehicles in that size that do have them it’s almost gimmicky
@@isimonsez Nope. My daughter often whines about being hot in the backseat of my MK6, whereupon I have to freeze my ass off in front to keep it cold back there. And just twice this week, I had other passengers with the same complaints.
@@isimonsezfalse. I have a MK8 GTI and my rear passengers absolutely love and appreciate the rear AC vents and 2 USB-C ports. There was also an optional two-toned wheel. At least here in the States. Just realized you’re Canucks.
Handsome vehicle and I like the new blue. Only issue for me would be that sea of black shiny plastic for its dash etc.
VW needs to do a final manual car with old school vibes .. get rid of the screens everywhere and shiny plastics. Bring back driver experience like the golden age of VW

Not sure why they got rid of the manual in the Jetta, everyone we got allotted at the dealer where I work, manuals sold before they got a VIN.
They don’t comply with stringent euro and EPA emissions laws. Reason why they were discontinued in the MK8 GTI/Golf R
@@Pamlicojdjdj1487
There are NO EPA laws that concern manual transmissions.

I was never a black wheel fan either Zack, but when I ordered my '24 Cadillac CT4-V, I ordered it with the black wheels. Looks so sharp with the radiant red paint colour.
You are entitled to your wrong opinion.

They stopped selling the Jetta here in Sydney Australia and I own one called the 2017 Highline Sports 2.0 Liter 155 KW. The only downside is the outdated Engine as the new gen Skoda Octavia RS and th VW Golf GTI will receive the 265 hp/195 KW Engine. And i prefer the previous models Air Con Buttons. And i don't like the look of the Audio System. And i'd Prefer the Adelaide Wheels thats 0n the golf gti.

I'm with you Zack, black wheels should be option only or discontinued, this is a fad that has stuck around way too long!
Go Blue!
I prefer the more Euro looking Jetta from two versions ago. New model body style looks boring to me. VW should also go back to the Fender audio. Good to see a manual transmission version though !
I also don't like black wheels... Thank you vw for offering regular tires.
I like them but I don't understand why VW keeps pushing touch buttons and controls when most people have said that hate them...
