Playing the original studio master tape. At this point still playing through its internal electronics, perhaps later to be converted to external head preamp connection.
Never Parting with my ATR`102. The finest recorder ever. The best pinch rollerless transport system and extremely low WOW & Flutter with a true accurate performance. Cant beat an ATR!!
I believe you're right about that. Unbelievable engineering team at Ampex to come up with the servo control and incredible audio path. I love my Ampex AG-440C and wore the tape heads out from recording live music. Now I'm considering doing a relap because I simply can't find a source for heads.
We used to lap and relap the heads in with 1” wide tape. I forget the micron grit number. I could share too many boring stories about everything Ampex did in instrumentation and pro audio.
Jesus, what a room! So many beautiful toys... I would be like a kid in a candy store in there. Damn... 1/2" 2 tracks @ 30ips!? ...and _half_ that width/speed is considered the analog holy grail amongst so many. What the hell kind of s/n ratio can you get from that?
It is not just a sound room, it is also a work area, hence some clutter. But it actually sounds quite good, according to many accounts. Judging the system sound by UA-cam is risky at best,, as in addition to all the normal compression/transmission and phone microphone issues you also often deal with moving microphone, not the one placed in the ideal position.
I purchased a 102 expressly for a record project I produced. It was an amazing piece of machinery, very complex under the skin however and the reliability of the machine I owned was a disappointment. I spent way too much time studying schematics. I set it up for 15IPS 1/2” stereo Ampex 499 with Dolby SR noise reduction. Essentially, it was a large, expensive, pain in the butt replacement for a quality 24 bit converter. At the end of the project, I sold it and haven’t missed it at all.
The record and Repro electronics on the ATR will absolutely blow away any of those Studers or Revoxes! There's a reason why the ATR was the industry standard for decades as the mixdown machine!
You are absolutely right. The electronics on my AG-440C are amazing as well, but, the ATR is the cream of the crop. Unfortunately I'm having a very difficult time finding new heads after all the tape I've ran through it.
nice components ,it seems a work shop ,all needed is there, i also have a studer 4 track stereo recorder, professional model ,(studer is the professional brand of revox that i think i saw a reel player like mine, studer and revox ,also have other working from akai, technics ,pioneer and the oldest a huge Grundig with 7 speeds from early 60´s and it can work as a telephone answering machine but it´s the biigest reel deck i have and more complete with home tape section
I feel they should have made a standard tape speed somewhere between 15 and and 30 ips.. maybe 23 ips? 30 sounds great but its alot of mechanical action
How does dude keep it all clean? 🤔 Around my computers, TV, and Hi-Fi, it's a jungle of wires, and nigh-on impossible to clean, without taking it all apart, which takes FOREVER!
I think looking at the kit, it may be expensive & top notch but it looks absolutely a mess, obviously someone's obsession but no thanks, I like great sound without it looking like a junk yard.
hi it's now very hard to find any studio tape decks like this lot in the uk i was lucky i was buying at the right time one big thing it's who you know that counts having a youtube channel is a big plus as well
Actually, my wife loved them at her first sight... I am sure the fact they stay locked securely in my audio room had something to do with that, but even if they wander through the house at night we shall never know. :)
Very impressive collection of machines! I saw every major flavor of Audiophile machine except a Nagra T. I love my ATR also, but I have no way to play AEG tapes, how did you build the adaptor you have for AEG hubs on your ATR?
For some reason Nagra T does not excite me - leaving alone its cost. To me the best, the most "Nagra" Nagra is the model III. :) As far as the AEG - I created my own solution using some modified existing pieces, and making some additional parts.
This is a studio master with three takes of that song, apparently that version never made it into production - this is not the first time I am asked this question. :)
hi i have tapes that size they do sound ace they not many in the uk 14 inch i have a 12'5 otari mtr is as good is this deck 1/2 inch tapes 14 inch x1/2 analog i never seen any in the uk i picked up 14 inch x 1/4 spools
You can also play pancakes. Wow, is it 30 ips? The standard for pancake machines (with platter) is magnetic layer outside, or are all tapes changed to inside?
There are two ways, the German, with the magnetic layer facing outside, and the International, more traditional. The international way is by far the more common. I have machines in both, but since I keep all my pancakes with the layer in, on some machines I twist the tape. You can see that in some of my other videos, for instance that of Digitec F500.
Actually, the 45 degree angle is indication of correct azimuth adjustment. A mono signal produces a perfect 45 degrees line, stereo signal will have some activity to the sides, dependent upon the amount of stereo channel separation. Signal in the left channel alone produces horizontal line, the right channel signal gives vertical line.
So the tape is playing into a room, how can you tell it is dull sounding? Also the whole idea with tape recorders is to set them up as flat as possible. You are showing your ignorance.
@@dougjane64 that is correct, the recorder's response is totally flat, but the microphone position is not selected for the right sound, plus when you move laterally fairly close to the speaker you can expect all sorts of effects. So ideally the sound should be recorded from an optimal position with a separate microphone... something I don't have.
I don't think Ampex ever offered the AG DIN hub solution for that machine, so I created my own. I also took the standard 1/4" hub and added a height extension to it, so it could be used with 1/2" tape.
Oh hell yes....but then the stereo sound quality would be very close to perfect...which might be a copyright issue. Always nice to see Pro Gear in operation.
Magnitophone very cool! Unfortunately, there is no real natural sound, most likely the avant-garde acoustics are to blame for everything, which kills analog sound.
Never Parting with my ATR`102. The finest recorder ever. The best pinch rollerless transport system and extremely low WOW & Flutter with a true accurate performance. Cant beat an ATR!!

just buy an old analog oscilloscope

From Ampex specification page it should be 78dB unweighted, 81dB A-Weighted.
Whenever tape is involved, a screwdriver is a must-have :) Warm greetings from retro-computing freak!
What an amazing collection of gear! Incredible!
Magnificent machines, deserve a treated room to really make that sound come alive 👍🏼
nice, I thought my sound room was a bit cluttered.. now I don't feel so bad. sounds great, I mean as great as music can sound on youtube..

Nice machines. It takes a lot of hours of work keeping those babies in shape.
That is correct, but on the plus side they are remarkably reliable.
@@Foxbat9000 They are pretty solid. After a full restore, they can run for a long time without any problems.
Awesome machine, and awesome collection!
I *wish* I had been paying attention when all these wonderful studio machines were being given away because nobody wanted them at the time...
😮

Is this a Mechlabor stm 310 recorder in this finest company near by the a80 and others? Wow, thanks..
Yes, it is, and I have a video on it.
I've found some good stuff at yard sales too.😀
Please, please somehow digitize that tape and put it on the internet archive! It’s such an awesome take, I like the drums more
It IS a very good performance, but I suspect one would have to deal with legal issues along the way.
Would be nice to have your opinion on the differences between these wonder-machines. I see a hungarian made amongst them as well... Greetings! Feri
I want one!
Ich bin verliebt ❤❤❤
What version of this song are you playing? It’s not the Version that’s available on streaming services and I like the version you have a lot better

True this. I was also lucky enough to buy up a good stash 'back in the day' before they got too expensive or more often now, just brink for parts.
Imagine the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) on those speakers lol. "But honey, look at the lovely shade of red they're in!"

A very difficult choice of what will play today
Nice 👍
Damn that’s good!!!!

Analog heaven
I think you should call your collection Open Reel Heaven.
Do you listening to the music in fast forward mode?😁
Just about... time flies at 30ips. :)
Rookie question (sorry) these are all originally mastered on 15ips 1/4 inch ... right? What's the benefit of going bigger and faster than the source?
No problem, but no, this tape is the original studio master, recorded at 30ips in 1/2" format
@Foxbat9000 hello, what is this difference mixing down at 30 ips and 1/2 inch compared to 1 inch?
Amazing!!!
Tnx!!!
I have the same desk lamp at 1:40.

You are correct, apparently 1/2" by 14" reels don't exist, at least I have not seen one myself. The reel in the video I cut down from 1" to 1/2".
Beatiful. Do you use a sub for those speakers?
Yes, the speakers come with their own subs. Two of them, each one with two 15" (I believe) drivers.
too bad the a80 i have access to, has a mono head. what a loss
