To anyone who doesn’t have the Studer A800, don’t buy the Ampex and Studer separately there is a new Magnetic Tape Bundle including Native versions for only $99 and with a $50 coupon it’s only $49 for both!
My fingernails used to be black from Ampex tape emulsion, people are taking digital "cut and comp" features for granted lol. Great plug, it is not too much in your face but it indeed sounds as close to the tape in full honesty can't tell the difference, and have been using reel to reel recorders for 30 years or more. Still have my Studer Revox A77 from way back when. Regardless, it is about knowing what you wanna get from the tape. Exploit the difference in the dynamic range of the medium and get that pleasant tape compression, joy. Difference between recording/punching in and out and final master on a tape is huge.
it’s wild that the native plugins require constant internet access even though they’re licensed with ilok, which would easily run offline with the same level of security. massive pain
Its cool having heard these songs so many times tested with different gear and plugs, I really know whats going on each time you demo something. Great stuff.
I'm deep in the UAD eco-system, although that is slowly changing. I really love this plugin and use it quite liberally on specific groups. If something is sounding not full enough in the lowend or missing something in the mids or top I will try this plug first before I apply an EQ. A lot of times it works so well EQ moves are minimal afterward, and sometimes it's doesn't work. It's easy to over use and I've done that before -- lol. Thanks for the in-depth explanation of the controls! Great info David.

The ATR is a great sexy sounding deck, this is a good plug in, even tho I have the actual ATR, I'd use the plugin on top of the hardware version to come up with some extended sonic. UAD did a good job with this.

I have used the ATR-102 on other systems before, but I've never had access to it outside of a studio (not a fan of the DSP accelerator/interface that UAD has been pushing).

Looptrotter Sa2rate is awesome to use after tape ems too imo... Tape really flatters the sound of things that Sa2rate will add best results too
Crazy putting this on the master bus before the recording process and using the studer on tracks. Obviously need to mix still, just not as much as usual.
Great demo video and super informative as always, thanks! I've been waiting for this tape plugin to go native since at least before forever, so as you said: it's a good day! Happy mixing!🎉
I'm excited to try this out on my 2-Bus! I have been using Softube Tape, and only it because I haven't found another I personally like as much for the 2-Bus. But this sounds very promising. Excellent video man! Thanks for the heads-up.
Yeah I bought the paid version of Luna, and was using it in there (I don’t have UAD hardware). So I was surprised when checking updates on software that it was sitting in my account to download. When I saw it in my account they didn’t even acknowledge it was native at the time. Either way, always happy to get a plugin in my account and not have to technically pay extra for it.
Apparently, they have given it for free to their customers. However, I wish they had informed me in time because I bought it the moment I saw its native release. Later that day, I received an email from Universal Audio stating that they were offering it for free and it was available for immediate download.
I think they updated this because when I open the extended control mines is different and its more controls & up in the pent house the record and reproduce knobs is opposite of what they are in this video & underneath reproduce the switch is VU/peak instead of auto gain, under record is the full words input & output.
Great! Just a comment for the HF ajust, actually ou mean to not fooled by the highs and tame down the 30ips to match the 15ips, you said the other, :-)
ooooooh f*** yeah, i was looking it up apparently right before they released it and was quite disappointed they hadnt made it native yet.. just too bad my price isnt 40 bucks but 230$ 😅
You mean Bella's remix? The stems for the remix had all my effects on it already. I don't have a breakdown of that mix but my new vocal mixing course does for the other song (Goodbye), it's start to finish including the vocal production mixbustv.rewardmusic.com/products/32636-the-ultimate-vocal-production-and-mixing-guide And this would be the song: ua-cam.com/video/Vzag8oKVn08/v-deo.htmlsi=ekg1IvWv-4dB1U0P
So happy iv been visiting the uad spark page to check & dreamed if it would appear as native & it just happend. On my portable macbook. New gui too nice.
That sounds pretty good for Mastering. I have the Studer UA plug so I might have to A/B both and see the difference. A bit confused though as to why the 30ips sounds darker than 15ips. Faster tape speed should give you more brightness. That part threw me off a bit. On the Studer I prefer the 30 most of the time but on this one I prefer the 15ips. Either way this sounds great and it's the last 5% of quality that you need before you consider the Master finished.
Great video. However I’ve tried so many tape plugins it’s ridiculous. I can’t justify buying another one even for 39 bucks hehe I have settled on Uhe Satin. That thing is an absolute beast.
Too bad they got rid of Wow/Flutter controls and the Delay module... As an ex Kramer tape user I'd like a direct substitute and still UA can't make it happen! Of course I'm gonna get that too anyways but... Great review as always!
Wow! I bought the Ampex ATR yesterday. A great presentation of the ins and outs of this plugin. What is the bass sound you use in the first song you played? Thank you kindly.👍👀👍
It's a LUNA extension, but in large format. The real thing isn't like that! I don't care about Retina, I want it complete, natively. Will it be like that with the other more famous ones too?!
Sorry David, your review is excellent as always, but I had to do the disclaimer hahaha, I love this plugin that's why it bothers me so much that they cut the functions. Since you have influence, it would be great if you could consider making the suggestion to the UAD team that include the old complex version and the low latency, I sent my own suggestion to them but I am nobody. I send you greetings and the best of luck, Cheers!
Sure I can, although they read your comments here. But I'm pretty sure they did it for a reason and not just to spite people 😄 but they're very open to feedback
@@mixbustv Thanks man! Now I feel like I overreacted a little, but hey, since they make some of the best plugins on the market, I hope they understand us and put on the hero cape haha
Just launched UA connect and seems this has been added to any existing bundle and I don't need to buy it? Anyone else noticed that. Nice touch..... I don't have any DSP UAD only native, so I assume this is the way it's gone if you've purchased collections in the past?
Well, they actually changed the position of the 'record' and 'reproduce' level knob. On the original machine, and on the earlier UAD version the reproduce level was on the left and the record level on the right. They changed it on the release of the native version. It was probably too irritating....and the people that have gotten used to this are now confused again ... ;-D
disappointed to see they took out the delay function and wow and flutter out of the plugin...like whyyyy? I love it as a creative tool....please bring it back!
Love your videos, man! I'm confused regarding the record/reproduce-explanation though. Maybe you could help me understand. In the plugin manual for the Native version, it seems to me it's saying the opposite of what you're saying; the record knob adjusts the signal INTO the plugin and it's tape circuitry. The manual calls this knob the plugins "primary color control". Reproduce adjusts the signal level coming from the virtual tape before the signal is sent to the Meters. Am I missing something or does that not mean 'reproduce' is basically an output knob? Sorry if I'm being slow, lol.
UAD has gotten the closest in my opinion to a tape emulation. I feel like others try to focus on the colour not the rest of the emulation and doing so it becomes a bit more of a effect than a mixing tool. I can add this plugin to all tracks without sacrificing things to add something. They also make sure to add proper anti aliasing, which is one of the problem with most other emulations. Another recently did quite well to get close but only worked well with the noise engaged... turned out they were using the noise to cover over the anti aliasing. Really cool to not need the UAD eco system as I am not a fan of it at all, I only need effects on my input and they do not have everything I want in their library. They are also being impressive with their free DAW being completely free now as you do not need their interfaces. I think this has completely saved themselves from being a bit of a bad subject to people not wanting to buy into their eco system. For people starting out, to their benefit, can now put extra money into the other studio equipment instead of a big chunk going into buying a DAW. If those people then grow up with that DAW they will better save themselves a place in their studio and be respected as they develop and grow into being professional. Very hand UAD, thanks!
You can already link a projects tracks to a Atmos renderer as you can with pretty much anything, but would be lovely if they one day added their own like other DAW's. I might still go with Presonus's DAW as it's the most simple one that just works with Atmos with very little need for work arounds. Audient being now the best choice for a interface with it also being the cheapest as you can use it to simply play Atmos content without doing work arounds, it just works. You always want to be able to play other music at times for reference or just learning from others are doing and also to monitor your mixes after it is uploaded. We all need to have limitations lifted in production... pre and post stages
@@coldskoolbeatz I never understood the buzz behind TRacks tapes. They were pretty mediocre in sound to my ears. A deterrent for me is the CPU usage. It's 2024, there's no excuse as to why they are so heavy. The coders need to rework that. Satin sounds extremely good, but I always use it as an effect.
Luna gets better every update! So excited for Version 2, and i'm still shocked the DAW itself is free. For a new workstation it's actually impressive how intuitive it is. Other decade standing DAWs weren't this put together in their first releases. I completely left the AVID ecosystem and now use Logic/Ableton for production and Luna for recording and mixing.
Great video as always! Just one thing: You got Input/output wrong. The way you were saying is how it is on the original DSP version of the plugin. They changed it to be more user friendly on the native release :) Record (left) is the input, and reproduce (right) is the output on this version. A confusing change
What is really annoying me is ive subscribed to spark, I have every plugin except the ampex, im emailing them back and forward but jesus man it's the one I want the most 😭
@bradleypower4803 it's not for me, been emailing uad back and forth. They told me to try a bunch of things but it's still not there, I got a mail today telling me they are forwarding the case the "software experts" I've been make doing with the studer for now, man it's great, im really excited to get the ampex working!
only on the original DSP release of the plugin this version is missing some features and controls in favor of lower latency and being more user friendly
Ok. I wanna buy it. Does it work with Mac OS Mojave. It requires Catalina. But I am using Mojave. Could I download the previous versions of it, If I buy it?
It's very CPU efficient even on my 2019 Mac machine. I can only imagine how it will perform on silicon. I'm actually shocked because the DSP version is super heavy on my Apollo cores.
This is closer to the Uhe Satin’s Studio mode than UVI’s Tape Color. There is certainly lots of overlap with Tape Color to Satin or the Ampex but it’s definitely not geared for the same processing.
I can't believe they took out the delay and 80% of the actual controls compared to DSP version. Weird if you ask me I haven't updated my Apollo software simply because I can't get conformation that UA didn't also kill the controls in the DSP version. Does anyone know? I use the ATR tape delay all the time!
Did UAD update their plugins so that they now process audio internally at 64 bit floating point, or are these new native plugins still limited to an internal audio processing at 32 bit floating point ? (32 bit float has a noise floor no better than 24 bit in regards to trunaction noise and rounding errors when processing and this noise can become audible when using many plugins in a large project). This problem can be prevented by using 64 bit float for internal audio processing inside the plugin instead of using 32 bit floating point for audio processing inside the plugin. If UAD is still releasing plugins that are only 32 bit float internal audio processing, then UAD dropped the ball in that regards and UAD needs to catch up to modern times in regards to audio processing internally for their plugins. I'm willing to bet that these plugins use 32 bit floating point internally for processing audio and that is very disappointing because they should be 64 bit float inside the plugin for best results.
@mixbustv I'm not trying to say that we can not get a good sounding record using these tools. I'm just trying to point out that UAD is considered one of the very best plugin manufacturers in the world and I only wish that UAD would have taken the time and energy to update these plugins to use 64 bit floating point math internally for audio processing because from a math standpoint (plugins are all about math and calculations), 64 bit float is a much better format to use than 32 bit float due to less (lower level) rounding and truncation errors (which translates to noise that can become audible in large projects when using several 32 bit float plugins in certain circumstances). It dissapoints me that UAD did not take the extra step to update the plugin to now use 64 bit internal audio processing. Perhaps that was not a priority for UAD, but it would make their plugins the very best that a plugin can be based on mathematical equations for processing audio. Its all math. It would be nice to see UAD update these plugins in that respect.
They removed features, it's honestly a disappointment. It doesn't even have the DELAY!!! or control for wow & flutter and noise. I bought it with all the hype and ended up surprised that it lacks several of the best features that the UAD-2 version has.
Isn't anybody going to complain about this new redesign??? 🤷🏽 I like the original (DSP) look way better!! IMO They should've kept the same look!! This one looks nice but the graphics looks shitty compared to the DSP version GUI. This is very disappointing to me especially after waiting all this time for it to come out native!! 😡🤦🏽
The native version doesn’t support full functionality (delays and modulation) so it’s just redundant… pointless for us LUNA users and a massive disappointment.

You got Input/output wrong. The way you were saying is how it is on the original DSP version of the plugin. They changed it to be more user friendly on the native release :) Record (left) is the input, and reproduce (right) is the output on this version. A confusing change
What is really annoying me is ive subscribed to spark, I have every plugin except the ampex, im emailing them back and forward but jesus man it's the one I want the most 😭
it's there man
@bradleypower4803 it's not for me, been emailing uad back and forth. They told me to try a bunch of things but it's still not there, I got a mail today telling me they are forwarding the case the "software experts"
I've been make doing with the studer for now, man it's great, im really excited to get the ampex working!
I'm not sure it's good or not.. If I get a UAD Satellite then it wont help with the Ampex plugin right?
Hope it comes to Spark soon
is there a way to adjust the wow / flutter?
No just on/off
only on the original DSP release of the plugin
this version is missing some features and controls in favor of lower latency and being more user friendly
Ok. I wanna buy it. Does it work with Mac OS Mojave. It requires Catalina. But I am using Mojave. Could I download the previous versions of it, If I buy it?
If it says it requires Catalina, then I highly doubt it'll work on an older OS. It might, but I would make sure before buying
Is it exclusively for Luna?
No.. lol I just said it's native 😄 it's literally the title of the video
Hi David , I clone this plugin with my Handsome Audio Zulu outboard gear 😊
I haven't updated my UAD plugins in years, is the Autogain feature only in the native plugin or did they add that to the og UAD-2 version?
I don't have the other version sorry
I see hitting this one hard is not really necessary. As long as the needle is moving it gives plenty of juice
Was waitin for the Natif Plugin since the last black death pandemic of 1348, Finally done 👻
How’s the CPU usage impact?
It's very CPU efficient even on my 2019 Mac machine. I can only imagine how it will perform on silicon. I'm actually shocked because the DSP version is super heavy on my Apollo cores.
this guy is like a bodyspin
like it
Would you say the UAD - Ampex ATR-102 is as good as the UVI - Tape Effect Suite?
They don't do the same things!
UVI is effects, this is almost strictly 2bus and it models A specific machine
This is closer to the Uhe Satin’s Studio mode than UVI’s Tape Color. There is certainly lots of overlap with Tape Color to Satin or the Ampex but it’s definitely not geared for the same processing.
I would argue that the best UAD plugin is Capital Chambers
How does it compare to your beloved softube tape???
Tape I use on many tracks, single, groups etc.. this is definitely a 2bus one. Both great
@@mixbustv David, I have just bought psp vintage warmer and love it. Is the Ampex equally good on a master?
I can't believe they took out the delay and 80% of the actual controls compared to DSP version. Weird if you ask me I haven't updated my Apollo software simply because I can't get conformation that UA didn't also kill the controls in the DSP version. Does anyone know? I use the ATR tape delay all the time!
DSP version is unchanged thankfully!
@@Vanilla_Sun Good too know thanks I saw that about 1 day after I commented on this video!! Cheers!
Not buying any plugins until I make money on music. Going into 5,000 debt. Isn’t the best start to a music career
So music should be different than any other career? Which endeavor that leads to making money doesn't require an investment? Curious
@@mixbustv it’s just buying 20 plugins that subtly do the same things isn’t a good reason to go into debt ..
Unfortunately the native version does not have the delay of the DSP version 😢
I can’t for the life of me figure out why they did this
they should call it ATR 102 LE 😅
I bought it this morning before leaving for work and just saw this 😢
Oh such a steal! Ty David
Anyone want to buy a 4 month old Apollo twin x usb now that this plugin in native? lol seriously
How did we manage to get good sounding records up until now I wonder.
I like the original (DSP) look way better!! IMO
They should've kept the same look!!
