He had no vocal classical training, but he had been offered a scholarship to Julliard for his trumpet playing. He also grew up listening to Mario Lanza and had a lifelong appreciation of Bach. So he was familiar with classical music and opera.

The funny thing about Dio is that he said he never had any formal vocal training. He attributed his singing ability to the breathing skills he developed playing French horn. Also, in addition to any Rainbow songs people recommend to you here, I definitely suggest listening to his work with Black Sabbath, in particular “Heaven and Hell” and “Children of the Sea”. Oh, and since you mentioned liking Queen, how about some Queen deep-cuts from their early years. I’d love to hear to talk about “Prophet’s Song”.
@Eric Schwenke You’re right about Ronnie never taking vocal lessons of any kind but It was the trumpet not the french horn and he started playing at age 5 and took daily lessons and played until age 17. He was so proficient at the Trumpet that he was offered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music but turned it down to focus on rock and roll. Another interesting fact about Ronnie it that he didn’t start singing until he was 17 and even then he didn’t want to but they had lost the lead singer in the band and he was the only one who sounded good out of the remaining 3 members. Because of this he put the trumpet down and picked up he bass guitar and it wasn’t until after the first Elf album that he put the bass down to concentrate entirely on singing. Strange to think that one of the greatest vocalist, regardless of genre, in the history of music never really wanted to sing in the first place.
Back in the days when rainbow was either of two things - the light phenomena in the sky after rain or the very best hard rock band in the world. Miss those days.
This is one of the greatest rock songs there will ever be imo. I get where you are coming from with the theatrical sound here. When you listen you can see what's happening as the story unfolds. Every bit of this song is intentionally written to tell this story. Even as I hear the guitar solo I picture the tower finished and the wizard climbs up jumps off to fly and crashes to the ground. This band in this time is a talent I don't think we will ever see again in rock. The thought and attention to detail in this song as a whole is unsurpassed. Good reaction. This is my first time seeing your channel and your awareness of the the many nuances in this song shows me you know what your talking about. Thank you!
Thanks, means a lot! By the looks of my analytics people seem to be watching this video longer than most of my others. Too bad YT is still not recommending it to many people
Im a small time singist. Great to see u enjoyed it. Ur points about Rock Singers who lack technique are often. valid here. Try him on "RAINBOW EYES" or moreover "SITTING IN A DREAM" He cud sing a spreadsheet and make it sublime. He actually performed live professionally for around 50 years since we lost him. A true icon and a Gentleman. He influenced me significantly, and were I half as good as this true artiste I'd be "chuffed" as we say in England. Thanks for an excellent video. Grazie
Clearly the best analysis of this song I can remember, great job!, My other favorite from Dio: Tarot woman, from the same Rising Album in fact the 1st track.
bravo and thank you H. Well done and much appreciated. Yes it is a great song. This song is mesmerizing and so atmospheric. It is a rock classic. And you actually listened to all aspects of the song featuring both Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore at their finest. Both are superb practitioners of their crafts and this song is so evocative and emotional. The playing and vocals are of the highest quality. These guys are pros and your analysis points out the details. What a change from the mostly amateurish "reaction" videos so prevalent now on UA-cam. Whatever works to generate clickbait eh? For a change you actually sound like you are listening to the song and know what you are talking about and it shows.
Dio RIP. Together with Blackmore, wow what a top team, and what a clear and powerful voice. Pleased that you commented on the Egyptian connection - I always thought that there was something in Blackmore's playing on this track
No vocal training at all for Ronnie, but he played trumpet from age 5 until about 15, great breath support came from that I'm sure! Dio IS the Godfather of rock singers, but to really appreciate his talent, you need to watch him live. Check out Rainbow 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977. There is SO much outstanding Dio from the band Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven and Hell. There's even a great video of Dio with Deep Purple and Orchestra singing 'Sitting on a Dream/Love is All', very different music than his bands, but his voice is angelic. The most amazing singer ever.
Not only is this song fantastic performances of the individual members on stage, or the band as a whole. The writing of this song, I consider to be one of the top ten music pieces composed, ever. And - by far, the greatest Rock'n Roll song! Imagine - that four musicians with this level of talent and skills, find each other, at the same spot, at the same time! And then, they sit down, and come up with a song like this! It won't happen again! This was a once in the history of the universe. Thanks for the REACTION/ANALYSIS! You skipped the trivia, and nailed the important parts! Well done! 😎🤘
Ronnie DID keep his voice, performing until his death in 2010 at age 67. It got a little lower in tone around 2005, but he could still hit every note. He could also sing ANY genre, even did a Christian song on Kerry Livegrens (from the band 'Kansas') album, the song is 'To Live For Tye King', beautiful. There's also great video of 'Ronnie Jane's Dio with Deep Purple and Orchestra, 'Sitting on a Dream/Love is All', live, flawless. Dio is always better LIVE. ANY songs from the 'Live in Munich 1977' concert will be amazing. The BEST is 'Mistreated'ive in Munich 1977, one of the GREATEST vocal performances I've ever seen! So much material from Dios bands Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio & Heaven and Hell. NOTHING IS AVERAGE WITH RONNIE!!
I love Dio, he never really got the credit he deserves. As a vocal nerd may i suggest Nightwish - Ghost love score live at Wacken 2013.There singer is the female version of Ronnie the way she tells a story i think you will enjoy it.
This kind of music comes from a spiritual world and Dio was into it, along with his fellas. It is not the kind of dull childish romance. Dio is the father of heavy metal too, he is the "constructor"
The live footage is from the 1977 concert in Munich and the song they are doing is Kill the King. This is the studio version of Stargazer. Stargazer had been dropped from the live set by this time. The strings you can hear is the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
Great reaction. There are so many great singers in rock and metal...you should check out some of them. Child in time by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, PInk Floyd, Queen, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Tool...the list is to long. All great singers.
I would love to check all of them, I've listened to some of the main songs from some of those bands but there's a lot I haven't. I would like to take the channel into that direction a bit, but it all depends on how much you share these videos :) UA-cam doesn't really recommend my rock/metal reactions as much as other geners although I wish it did, so pleaseee share it around :) It really helps a lot
@@HofTheStage Sure, I'll share your videos. I've found your chanel because of Måneskin, so I think if you'll do some more rock/metal videos they will be shared to rock music viewers mainly but also to other people. You can try with some Queen or Scorpions, they are not so "heavy"😊

Dio did a collaboration on two songs with Kerry Livegren from Kansas. Mask of the a Great Deceiver and Live For the King. Those two songs highlight some of the best of his vocals at the peak of his career just before he moved on to play with Black Sabbath.
Thanks for the input. I never knew about this collaboration. Im going to go find them!! Mob Rules album I feel was his pinacle! True Heavy Metal definition.
This awesome vocalist and front man is the reason I subscribed. There will never ever be another one like him. Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) wrote this song on a cello. He also wrote and arranged the Strings part! It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra playing the strings! Guitar solo is in B Phrygian dominant scale.

Man on the Silver Mountain, Temple of the King both by Rainbow. Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Diver by Dio. Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath live (Dio Era)
I'm a huge Ronnie Jame Dio fan, one of the best rock voices ever, if not any styule of music. Plus if you go back he was in a doo-woop band in the 60's before doing hard rock/heavy metal. Plus, he instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet . I will say this I'm not a singer...I can't carry a note in a bucket, my wife she's been church chior for years, but when I hear DIO'S voice it just floors me every time every song I hear from him.
That guitar solo is part of the storytelling, it foreshadows the next stanza in lyrics, it represents the wizard ascending the tower and leaping off to fly, then the plunge!
Just got this in my algorithm, and being a huge DIO fan, had to hear your take on this legendary song. Spot on! Ther will Jeter be another voice like Dio's, bit we have his music to listen to and appreciate for the rest of our lives. Thank you for this great reaction.

Regarding Dio, you should listen "Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow" & "Mistreated" live in Munich 1977 also "Sitting in a Dream with Deep Purple & Orchestra" is very interesting performance
Dio is a natural. He NEVER had vocal training in his life. He was also a smoker. God rest his soul. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert when he was in Black Sabbath.
Check out Rainbow live in 1977, the song Kill the king ua-cam.com/video/zEaxow3PoO0/v-deo.html Dio really was at his best live in my opnion as a huge fan since the 80´s.
I have never heard anything about that and could not even find any facts to back that up. He was a trumpet as a child which he contributed to his ability to sing (since he had trained up your lung capacity by playing the trumpet)
@@steveguse4481 he actually mentioned that in an interview when he got the question why he hade a devil drowning a priest on the cover, his answer was how do you know it is not a priest drowning a devil. Do not judge a book by it's cover.
@@Templarofsteel88 Thanks for the lesson Aesop but it obviously IS a priest drowning. That was just his way of deflecting the question. He stated openly in other interviews that he was at odds with the catholic church. He was ahead of his time

Welcome to magic, H. From now on, you will spend about 3-4 hours of your life listening to DIO. This is DIO effect. And every time you listen to his song you will be like this; My heart is leaving here! All of DIO's songs feature unique vocal performances. My favourites; Heaven&Hell Children of the Sea Rainbow in the Dark Don't talk to Strangers Some cover songs that I think are better than the original; Dream On Mistreated
After Rainbow Dio joined Black Sabbath, I recomend you take a listen to the title song from the first album, Heaven and hell. It is a true classic song and Dio kept on playing this song in his live shows after forming his own band😎🤘
Thank you very much for your Dio reaction. Could you please check the "sign of the Southern Cross" it's from his Black Sabbath era. Pure greatness, Dio was the best.
The other amazing thing about this song is large portions are based around a single chord. Blackmores solo is almost entirely over a single chord. One chord. And instead of running around scales or cheezy blues licks he starts using a slide - yep a slide, then creates a rising, growing tension and texture building to a crescendo using super fast picked notes before once again going into those gorgeous rich slow harmonic minor runs at the end. Is it any wonder he is considered a master of his genre.
Speaking for myself I had very much a similar transition when it came to Musical styles. Definitely a fan of The Beatles In My Youth and pre-teens, which was also a Great era for theatrical Rock like kiss and things like that who wrote super catchy songs, as my ear got more sophisticated I also found myself gravitating towards the heavier side of that era with bands like black sabbath, rainbow, who were essentially the musicians that took the Beatles art of songcraft and just transitioned into heavier areas. The musicianship in this era is top-notch and the exploration in the arrangements tends to be Way Beyond what the average attention span these days could even consider listening to. I would say queen with 4Runners in that kind of stuff, but they weren't alone and the influence of that sort of expanded musicality crossed over into what would become progressive rock and that is been such as rush, genesis, Jethro Tull etcetera where the musicality is off the charts and is pretty much Self Indulgence personified but if you are a musical person you're going to enjoy that kind of stuff I guarantee it. So the takeaway here is that if you were just now kind of gravitating towards this era of music, I strongly recommend Rush from the 1970s, early Black Sabbath with Ozzy and later Black Sabbath with Dio are two different Realms but they're both fantastic, you can't go wrong with Jethro Tull's songs from the woods album... there's just so much to listen to. Cheers
Dio said that he never had any vocal training. He always said that his abilities came from breathing techniques that he'd learned for playing the trumpet.
Ronnie James Dio's vocal technique and breath control comes from his formative years blowing a trumpet. The lyrics to this song were inspired by a 1954 film: The Silver Chalice starring Jack Palance. I second the comments about reacting to Rainbow - Mistreated from live in Munich 1977 or Gates of Babylon.
Love your reaction DIO is the master he played trumpet as a kid i think then in highschool started several different bands im pretty sure he started singing in 1957 singing teeny bopper songs of the time and sang in several very famous bands and had a successful solo career towards the end until he passed in 2010 his last song was metal will never die
Absolutely more DIO Please. Another Great live performance from a Master and an Awesome Band. Queens Ryche, Take Hold of the Flame, Live from Tokyo. You will not be disappointed.

Well, like every Italian or Irish, he can sing naturally.
@@jimshelby406 awesome and great fact ( yes, i know its verifiable true)
Thank you!
Totally it's not just a song they sing but a whole story and performance which they tell with the way they use their instruments and voice, amazing.
That's my favorite thing about this era of rock, the story telling is unmatched, absolute masters at there craft!
Honestly, the analysis is just as great as the song itself, thank you man!
Thanks, means a lot! By the looks of my analytics people seem to be watching this video longer than most of my others. Too bad YT is still not recommending it to many people
Im a small time singist. Great to see u enjoyed it. Ur points about Rock Singers who lack technique are often.
valid here.
Try him on "RAINBOW EYES" or moreover "SITTING IN A DREAM"
He cud sing a spreadsheet and make it sublime.
My friend react to mistreated from live in Munich One of the best ever Ronnie has sing
The Roger Glover song 'Love Is All' is also sung by Dio...
Poder, fuerza, intensidad, virtuosismo, emoción..., nunca quiero que acabe. Stargazer no es música es un milagro!!!!
Saludos👍👍👍👍👍👍
You can visualize the tower being constructed on the solo too. And at the end of the solo, the wizard falling.
He was accused of altering his vocal tracks in the studio because of his range. So he did it better live and shut every critic up.
Maybe it would be a good idea to continue with the follow up song "A light in the black". Another masterpiece.
Rainbow Mistreated live munich 1977 🙏
Dio never had any training but he did state that his trumpet playing in his youth trained his breathing.
Heaven and Hell- Black Sabbath. Dio kills the 1st line, sets the tone for the song!!
Dio RIP. Together with Blackmore, wow what a top team, and what a clear and powerful voice. Pleased that you commented on the Egyptian connection - I always thought that there was something in Blackmore's playing on this track
Rainbow, "Lady of the Lake", all for one line: "diamonds out of the rain" will make the hair on your neck stand up.
Dio is amazing!! His voice stirs my heart and soul!! 🔥🤘🏻🥰
Ronnie James Dio lived the lyrics he wrote. That's why no one will ever be able to sing his songs without fucking up.
Probably my favourite song of all fucking time.
"Don't talk to strangers" is my fav song. He starts very tender and then...
Dio played trumpet from age 5 until about 17.
Well done! 😎🤘
Love your reaction. Something I would like to point out is that Dio wasn't classically trained. Natural singer here. Love from Australia!
He was in a 50”s band a time when the singing sold the song but you know that from appreciating singing
I love Dio, he never really got the credit he deserves. As a vocal nerd may i suggest Nightwish - Ghost love score live at Wacken 2013.There singer is the female version of Ronnie the way she tells a story i think you will enjoy it.
I love Nightwish :) I think I already reacted to that one - ua-cam.com/video/obk9jPasvPw/v-deo.html
Yeah like Ronnie, Floor is the real deal. I will look out for that reaction.
Child in time ....
Funny you mentioned that he go on for 50 years without loose his voice, he did litterally!!! Thanks for the reaction, rainbow was a great band before blackmores hybris kicked in ..
Maybe listen to Iron maiden - Hallowed be thy name (live in 1982).
Great vocals......
You mean this one ua-cam.com/video/EcRHqPn_fKM/v-deo.html :)
You should react to his live in london song Dont talk to strangers...he was in his early sixties battling cancer and he was still amazing..he died 15 months after that show...only time I ever cried over the passing of a any musician..he had that much if an impact on my life.
RIP Ronnie James Dio..we miss you
Dio had NO formal training! Look it up. Natural vocal GOD
I ordered the Kerry Livegren album from 1980!! Cant wait!! Thank you again!!
@@archibaldsalyards926 awesome
Totally enjoyed your reaction to this classic!
Rainbow - Gates of Babylon.
This awesome vocalist and front man is the reason I subscribed. There will never ever be another one like him. His voice was perfect from the time he started singing, at a very early age until right before he passed away. Awesome reaction! More Dio please! Do one of his songs he did when he joined up with Black Sabbath. It's called, Children Of The Sea. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/TaZL3oiqupE/v-deo.html Another great one is, The Sign Of The Southern Cross. Here is that link: ua-cam.com/video/fwlPFq9b1xQ/v-deo.html He is greatly missed. RIP RJD
Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) wrote this song on a cello. He also wrote and arranged the Strings part! It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra playing the strings! Guitar solo is in B Phrygian dominant scale.
Ronnie is one of only two singers to give me goose bumps every time i hear them.
I never noticed the call-and-response structure before. Well done!
Man on the Silver Mountain, Temple of the King both by Rainbow. Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Diver by Dio. Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath live (Dio Era)
I read a comment saying the #1 problem with the song was that it's not 3 days long. It could go on and on, and I would be good.
Part of the "keyboard" is actually the Munich Symphony Orchester conducted by Eberhard Schöner.
Catch The Rainbow Live is a must. It's hard to find one complete video. Its a long song and most vids are in like 3 or 4 videos.
Just got this in my algorithm, and being a huge DIO fan, had to hear your take on this legendary song. Spot on! Ther will Jeter be another voice like Dio's, bit we have his music to listen to and appreciate for the rest of our lives. Thank you for this great reaction.
One of my top three singers all time Freddie Mercury Ronnie James Dio Ian Gillan nobody beats him lives nobody beats him live ( chid in time ) unf.. king believable , & sir Paul ( helper skelter) +oh darling p.s . I m a vocal coach enjoyed your reaction
🥰 your reaction to Dio/Rainbow. Dio was such an epic 🎶 storyteller🤘 Thank you ☀️
Check out Rainbow live in 1977, the song Kill the king ua-cam.com/video/zEaxow3PoO0/v-deo.html Dio really was at his best live in my opnion as a huge fan since the 80´s.
Dio, started off as a crooner back in the early days, but switched to rock later. He's one of the best voices in rock, just enjoy..
Ronny James Dio was a choir boy at the New York Metropolitan Cathedral, which is probably the reason for his vocal training!
I have never heard anything about that and could not even find any facts to back that up. He was a trumpet as a child which he contributed to his ability to sing (since he had trained up your lung capacity by playing the trumpet)
Never heard that as well. Dio grew up listening to opera at a young age and playing the trumpet at age 5 to age 17 helped his breath support.
Probably also why he had a priest getting launched into the ocean on his album cover 🤔
He was ahead of his time
MISTREAD BY RAINBOW 1977. Best vocal performance ever from Dio !
A great reaction for one of the greatest bands
This could be the most enjoyable reaction video that I've seen for Stargazer. Wildly entertaining!!
Appreciate it! Cheers!
3 best story telling songs
Stargazer. Master of Puppet. Power Slave. Honorable mentioned Ryme of ancient mariner
Great commenting, thank you!! 🙂This song is just...a miracle in itself. Everything goes together perfectly - magic! Ronnie - one of the best, ever! Richie - fantastic!
He had a 50 year career from Doo Wop through rock and metal
Listen to The Gates of Babylon, on Rainbow's Long Live Rock 'n Roll album. Another Rainbow epic, masterpiece.
Welcome to magic, H. From now on, you will spend about 3-4 hours of your life listening to DIO. This is DIO effect. And every time you listen to his song you will be like this; My heart is leaving here!
All of DIO's songs feature unique vocal performances. My favourites;
Heaven&Hell
Children of the Sea
Rainbow in the Dark
Don't talk to Strangers
Some cover songs that I think are better than the original;
Dream On
Mistreated
Holy diver, rainbow in the dark, last in line, killing the dragon.....so many. I'll subscribe just to listen to his songs reactions 😀
After Rainbow Dio joined Black Sabbath, I recomend you take a listen to the title song from the first album, Heaven and hell. It is a true classic song and Dio kept on playing this song in his live shows after forming his own band😎🤘
Melodic solo?
Absolutely
welcome to the Master and Ruler of them all Ronnie James Dio was lucky enough to meet both him n Lemmy like 11 times over 30 years
Thank you very much for your Dio reaction. Could you please check the "sign of the Southern Cross" it's from his Black Sabbath era. Pure greatness, Dio was the best.
Great reaction! Another Rainbow song to look at is The Gates of Babylon. You will not be disappointed.
Thank you very much. Awesome song, awesome band.
