When I was in college, you couldn't walk down a hallway in a dorm, or down a street in warm weather, and not hear this album blasting out of someone's room/apartment. Truly the soundscape of the times, CSN&Y were everywhere, and we loved it. Good stuff.
I/some of my 7th-grade classmates got introduced to them in '70 by our "hippie" teacher: it changed my musical trajectory from "AM" to "FM", so to speak.
Agreed! Lots of young people today fall in love with music from this era because they were 'here' back then, checked out before their time ( maybe an overdose ), and are back now to give it another try.
with the loss of 3 great leaders , the anxiety of being drafted and sent halfway around the world to war, brutality of the system in opposing change , civil rights , anti war demonstrations , the music was a safe harbor in the storm , expression of the times . thanks for reacting to the music of my youth ( drafted 1967) . We are still here . Woodstock , Ohio , Wooden Ships especially stir the memories
I cannot imagine what that time was like when you were drafted. Glad you made it through. I’m Canadian but thank you for your service to your country. Old men always send the young off to war.
When this album came out, all of us from this generation were moved by all the songs on this album. The harmonies, the guitar work, just sublime. The songs are even more fantastic when you listen with headphones. I'm glad you have found your attachment to the music of the early 70's.
This stuff is phenomenal! It's so much better then the stuff I was listening to and hating myself over. I feel so bad for my generation in the music and art department.... just all soulless corporate trash being hocked. I know there are still some great modern artists but the number has plummeted
@@L33Reacts- There are several reasons why art like this is not typically promoted today. One is the uniqueness of that time. Protests against war were so idealistic - "Make love, not war." Flower Power. Personal journeys of discovery from yoga to eastern philosophy to vegetarianism (I went veg in high school) to simply the world outside our own culture. The original Woodstock experience came out of this. There was quite a lot of creative music that continued for the next three decades or so, along with lame stuff of course. So fans finding them works very differently than then. But they have digital drops now, and reactors help publicize. You and doing a good work.
You cannot underestimate the effect this album had on music in America when it was released. At the time, the British Invasion ruled the radio waves in 1969, and driving guitar riffs were the currency of the times. So much of rock music was still speeded up blues music with no subtlety. But CSNY blended country, blues and rock into a new sound that influenced so many musicians in all genres of music. Genius.
"Wooden Ships" is a masterpiece fittingly closing out this masterpiece of an album. Stills guitar work is sublime. Deja Vu is arguably one of the top ten, if not top five, most important albums in rock.
I had a brother who died from a drug overdose. I’m glad that you made it through the experience relatively unscathed. Hang in there youngblood. Your daughter is very cute btw.
As fans , many of us couldn’t see how CSN could follow up their superb debut album but they did and now we knew that this World Class lineup were here to stay . RIP David Crosby .
On this album, Crosby lead vocal on Deja Vu and Almost Cut My Hair, Nash lead vocal on Our House and Teach Your Children, Young lead vocal on Helpless and Country Girl, Stills lead vocal on Carry On, 4 + 20, and Everybody I Love You. All songs written by the lead singer except for Everybody I Love You which was written by both Stills and Young. Stephen also has the lead vocal on Woodstock, the song written by then girlfriend of Nash, Joni Mitchell. for the group to record first (Joni's live version of the song is haunting). Jerry Garcia plays pedal steel guitar for the first time on record on Teach Your Children.
Heard CS&N play this live at an all electric concert they did at the Doheny Blues Festival in SoCal over a decade ago and it was a great, great rendition. Best performance of the whole show 30+ years later.
"One, two, three, four" says it all. Musical genius! I grew up listening to the Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills and Neil Young), the Byrds (David Crosby), and the Hollies (Graham Nash). The combination and revolution of their styles culminating at Woodstock and after define an era of rock n roll that defines my personal music history and globally. "4 and 20" was one of the first songs I learned to play on my acoustic guitar. CSN&Y define my musical harmony training as well.. I'm so blessed for them to be part of my music background. I'm 67.
Stills had a whole harmony arrangement for 4+20, but the rest of the group insisted that Steven do it solo. He first played it on the Dick Cavett Show right after they got back from Woodstock.
Fifty years ago this coming summer I saw my first live CSN&Y show at Milwaukee County Stadium and one of the highlights of that concert was when they performed this song as the sun was setting. It’s one of my favorite concert memories. Thanks for the tunes!
These guys were my favorite group for 20 years. And Neil baby... I played them so much for so long, I go to pic something and I pass them by. Then I hear them and remember...! ❤❤❤ Thanks So so so great!
LEE , I think you were meant to be a child of the 60s. I can see these tunes resonate deep within you, as they did for me. I felt them in my soul. I could actually feel the chords. Sounds crazy, I know, but it was a special time for music, an awakening if you will.
Congrats again,Lee- on staying strong and overcoming your demons, bro. so glad you are enjoying all this music,as we enjoy watching you react to it! God bless..T
Crosby stills Nash and Young are by far one of the best bands ever! The album is a masterpiece. Makes me smile knowing you are experiencing some of the best music ever made. Your critique and the way you express your feelings for a song are superb! Nice review Lee!✌️❤️🎶
I think this music speaks to you very much like it spoke to me 50 years ago, because we live/lived in equally troubled times. Deja vú. This music still moves me. We love our children, no matter our ages, they keep us moving forward through the dangerous days we live in. My daughter is 47, my grandkids are 24 and 19. They are the reasons that my only remaining addictions are music, bicycles, and 2 cups of strong coffee in the morning. Love is the answer! Keep on rockin', keep on reflecting, it will get you through the hard times 😁
Thank you for sharing your story, Lee. I enjoy your work on the channel. CSN - All are very talented and blend incredibly, but Stephen Stills is next level songwriting, guitar work & vocals.
When I was in the Army. This was one of the songs by CSN&Y THAT WE WOULD JAM TO! I played harmonica, and we had 2 people who played guitar and a bunch of others who played percussion, on ANYTHING they could get their hands on. Of course, none of us could sing worth a damn! 😊
1969 to 1973. 2/68 Armor Battalion, Baumholder, Germany! 91Charlie, Clinical Specialist in charge of the Battalion Aid Station and TDY at the post Dispensary as shift leader. Basic at Fort Lewis Washington state, Ait at Fort Sam Houston Texas, Advanced Training at Fort Bragg North Carolina, then Baumholder and ETS at Fort Dix New Jersey! Got to see a lot of Europe! Got to ski at Garmisch (Site of 1936 Winter Olympics) and Zugspitze. Went to Neuschwanstein (the castle that the Disneyland castle is patterned after). Went to Amsterdam numerous times. Bought a 1964 BMW 1600 to tour with. And had a diet that was heavy in German beer, wine, Schnitzel and Brats! 😊 The playing music, CSN&Y, was at Fort Bragg where I was stationed for over a year for the advanced training! Lots of stories, best told over massive quantities of beer! 😅
@@richardmckee5729 Ah, so you're a war vet. I salute you for your service. Enjoyed your stories about touring in Europe, and I was stationed at Ft. Bragg too! That's where I did basic training. My time was from 1981-1985, and the closest thing I saw to combat was when I was stationed in Seoul in 1984. There was gunfire at the DMZ in November that year, and the whole country went on alert with a 9pm curfew. Us soldiers had to guard the perimeter of the base, even though I was a finance specialist(73C), I was issued live ammo for my M16. That was one of the scariest experiences of my life!
At Bragg, did you go to the Chute and get the mixed fry? Chicken gizzard, liver, heart, onion rings, French fries, carrots, cauliflower and okra! We called it the heart attack special! 😊
Stephen Stills is a master guitarist, singer, arranger. This album was so wonderful beginning to end. So glad to see you grow. Glad you survived and you got hear this fantastic album.
This album accompanied me though my first year of college that was really turbulent. Deja vu was a balm for the Soul and this soundtrack will remain within me forever.
“Deja Vu” is an all-time great LP. All 4 take turns on lead vocals. Not a lot of time to spend on one band, but “Crosby, Stills & Nash” has all great songs. The difference is Young just adds to the harmonies & rocking guitar.
Lee, thoughtful & thought provoking reaction as always. I got this album when I was 14 or 15 and 4+20 hit me too. As an angsty teen girl I was also heavily into Joni Mitchell and identified more w/her ruminations, cried a lot, wondered what my life would hold… Don’t feel bad for Steve, he was probably being dramatic and is known to be quite arrogant and cutting irl. Ironically, he had a relationship w/ Joni at some point, as did Crosby and Nash at various times. That can’t have been easy for any of them. And Neil Young, friends w/ Joni since the start of their careers (in Canada), remains good friends with her to this day.
There’s a great solo performance from Stills of 4+20 on the Dick Cavett show in 1969 I believe the day after the Woodstock festival. Something cool to check out
Great rhythm and Harmonies with these guys how can you not listen to them. Deja vu is just a glimpse that we dreamt of notice how its only a secrete moment !
There was something magical about Crosby, Stills and Nash (and to a lesser degree fellow Canadian Neil Young) back then. I still get goosebumps at their harmonies and chord changes. They didn't last long together but for a few years they were pure magic. Graham Nash's soaring high part harmonies were a huge reason why they were special. His voice gave them something extra. In the Hollies his vocals were less polished or maybe the production was less polished. I don't know, but with C,S & Y his voice is almost supernatural. It blends seamlessly with David Crosby's vocals.
Great! One of my favorites records of all time, great harmonies and instrumentations. Probably 'Deja vu' is one of the most popular song of the album. The song '4 + 20' is sooo beautiful, but people don't use to react to it, and it's nice you brought it here, Stephen vocals are very warming.
This first one is one of the few csny songs that has a Crosby solo that shows how wonderful his voice was.. he was a genius with arranging the harmonies for them.. if u r not sure who played a particular instrument on a csny tune , it’s Steven - he could literally play anything!! Great guitarist and voice shown in the second song.. he and Neil made magic!!
The Hendrix album Band Of Gypsys has maybe Jimi’s finest live performance, Machine Gun. If another human being on this earth could have made a guitar scream like that then I’d like to know their name.
@Bill_Jones. yes that "note" remains reverberating throughout the Cosmos and goes on forever. Imo the finest guitar solo of our time is the outro solo on Bold As Love ❤️ It also continues on forever❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
decades ago when I first heard these guys, the epiphanies that you are feeling are very similar to what I felt at the time.... the universe brings us what we need at any given time, even through music
Very beautiful music from a time that needed beautiful music . Still relevant today but it takes us back to a magic moment when all the talented bands were doing their thing. Amazing period to live thru . Thanks for getting it L33 😊
I love following your journey brother. Maybe I am deluded, but you seem happier now. I remember you saying that you were not happy a couple of times, but have not heard that lately at all. So happy for you. You seem open. Much love. ❤❤❤ (not having words is okay!!)
Helo from England. First off I'm glad you're still here so I can watch you react to so much of the music that I grew up with. We knew that it was great music at the time but in the intervening fifty years it just got better. Secondly, it's been a while since I listened to this album. I'd forgotten how good it is. Keep up the good work kiddo.
If you have time watch this video about Laurel Canyon in LA. Many of your favorites are featured here because they all lived there 1966-72 including CSN&Y, FZ, Joni, etc. Good to know the history, like how these guys even met…. ua-cam.com/video/YZsL4UfSlSQ/v-deo.htmlsi=20XsympaCz3MKRya
Still amazed that their 2nd gig was Woodstock.. as a group...I know they were all in other bands but wow.....absolutely played the grooves of this album..
You got that right. Best trio harmonies up there with the Everly Bros. duo Simon and Garfunkel, and the Fab 4! David Crosby did a fantastic lead vocal on Deja Vu and Almost Cut My Haur while Stephen Stills, while deaf in one ear from his late childhood accident, did lead vocals on 4 &20. LEE you must listen to some powerful lyrics and vocals on Graham Nash’s solo album Songs For Beginners with Military Madness, Chicago,I Used to be a King,Simple Man, and better Days. You’ll love the whole album which speaks of so much going on in our country at that time!it is always darkest before the dawn!
Masterpiece. One of my 10 favorite albums of all time. Great to see your appreciation for this!! Make sure to react to "Country Girl" and "Everybody I Love You"!!!

Wooden Ships isn't on this album, it was on the Crosby, Stills and Nash album. And yes, Deja Vu is one of THE great albums.
Neil Young only played on 5 tracks : "Helpless", "Country Girl", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Woodstock", and "Everybody I Love You".
Thank you for filling me in. Definitely doing country girl and teach your children for the next one! 🙃

We are all grateful you are here. Your reactions are thoughtful, intelligent, and soulful.❤
Darlin, you are so appreciated. Look at the wonderful man you have become. So proud that you conquered the beast. Music will sooth your soul. ❤😊
A third great album from this band is a double live album called "4-WAY STREET".
Crosby on 12 string and vocals, Stills on electric guitar on Deja Vu.
Stills on guitar and vocals on 4 & 20
4+20 never gets its due. Love the reaction. The hard ending as he says he just wishes his life would simply cease is so powerful.
Just imagine..................David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young ...in the same band and making an album..... Life is good !
Hay Lee congrats on 4 years big big accomplishment. I've got 8 years myself. Keep on rocking. Peace ✌️
David Crosby is BRILLIANT...................................................Period
brilliant at alienating his friends

"helplessly hoping"

David Crosby RIP. The Three part harmonies of CSN was really magical.
"4and20" strikes every man to his sole, as it did when I was just in my teens, when I first heard this song. I'm 67!

decades ago when I first heard these guys, the epiphanies that you are feeling are very similar to what I felt at the time.... the universe brings us what we need at any given time, even through music
I bought this album in 1971 and it’s always been one of my favorites
Neil Young brought that edge and rawness to the music.
Very beautiful music from a time that needed beautiful music . Still relevant today but it takes us back to a magic moment when all the talented bands were doing their thing. Amazing period to live thru . Thanks for getting it L33 😊
This song exemplifies why they were the favorite band of many of us for years back then! Congrats to you!
I saw CSN&Y at a stadium show in Houston. The opening acts were The Beach Boys and Chicago. I came home stoned, sunburned, and extremely happy.
They never did a bad track !! Crosby suffered like yourself but came through and lived a long time until his untimely death. RIP Croz.
I love following your journey brother. Maybe I am deluded, but you seem happier now. I remember you saying that you were not happy a couple of times, but have not heard that lately at all. So happy for you. You seem open. Much love. ❤❤❤ (not having words is okay!!)
I am grateful that you are here too. Your sincerity is refreshing.
I love when dogs make album covers as part of the gang.
REALLY good choices! They are unique and uniquely great!
Lee, we are grateful that you are here.
Man, Crosby and Nash particularly I just LOVE to hear sing together. What phenomenal voices and skills.
If you have time watch this video about Laurel Canyon in LA. Many of your favorites are featured here because they all lived there 1966-72 including CSN&Y, FZ, Joni, etc. Good to know the history, like how these guys even met….

Good job young man. Ya picked correctly. I can see you understand how great they are.
The song "Déjà vu" is a masterpiece.
Truly an amazing group of once young men. With harmonious voices and great musical craftsmanship their like will never come again.
makes me happy to see you reacting to the old great stuff🌸
4+20 is solo Stills... wrote it, sang it, played it. Hauntingly beautiful.
Still amazed that their 2nd gig was Woodstock.. as a group...I know they were all in other bands but wow.....absolutely played the grooves of this album..
"This is our second gig, man. We're scared shitless."
That's why I like your channel, you were born in the wrong decade.
This whole album is like a greatest hits now. “We have all been here before “
You got that right.
Glad you are experiencing the lyrics of Carry On. There was a me when I enjoyed the music, but life changed me & now the song is different.
Always darkest before the dawn... Kudos for getting your act together. Stay on the path. You only get one shot at this.
A great backstory Lee. Keep on keeping on. All my love
So many songs to hit. Ohio, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Find the Cost of Freedom, etc, etc.
Masterpiece. One of my 10 favorite albums of all time. Great to see your appreciation for this!! Make sure to react to "Country Girl" and "Everybody I Love You"!!!
Grateful your here. Just for you. 👍
4 Way Street is an amazing live album with both acoustic side and a electric side.
You might enjoy the band that Stills put together after CSNY...it was called Manassas. Their double album Manassas is all killer/no filler
Yes, I'm 72 and own an original vinyl copy of Manassas. One day one of my kids will have it.
@@LarryNeie-lj7zc I'm right there with ya on the number of years my friend
I like your thoughts. Keep heading north. 🤠
