There is no argument to the simple fact that Dame Maggie is in the top five of the greatest actresses of all time! Adore her and am in complete awe of her work! She is not only great in drama but quite a good comedic actress also!
What a gem. She completely inhabits each character she plays, to the point that we forget we're watching Maggie Smith because we're so mesmerized by her performance.
i don’t like her here’s the reason why... at my school we had a supply teacher who was an actor and friends with the woman who played the librarian in the first couple films of harry potter. she told him about her experience. apparently maggie didn’t like the fact that the librarian had a taller hat than her! she also hated the fact that the librarian got to sit next to alan rickman at one point. guess what she did? she got the librarian fired. apparently she was always complaining and being rude.
This woman is an absolute treasure! I don't think that I've ever seen Mo Rocca so restrained and reverent. I'll bet that it was nerve wracking trying to contain himself with a legend. LOL.
+2legit64 I agree, but Mo was not the right person to interview her. Maggie i think is a workaholic, i think working is good because you need a reason to get up in the morning and it keeps you active and why deprive us of her enormous talent (a bit selfish) she is really a A list thespian and one of Britain's best.
@@Chaoren85 If she ever does I'm gonna play it on loop everyday. Harry Potter read by Professor McGonagall is definition of outstanding. Only thing that could've made the scenario better if Late Alan Rickman joined her too.

Not all of us Americans are clueless; certain areas, yes, but not all of us are clueless. One could argue that we don't have accents that sound as if we're reciting glamourous poetry, but we do know how to stand our ground if we have to.
That moment in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie where Maggie is screaming "Assassin! Assassin" is still stuck with me. She is for sure one of the greatest!
Giacinto Bottone yes the same screaming scene that stuck with me when I first watched that movie as a boy in the sixties, except that the screaming words that stuck in my ears were “ treason! treason!” until when I recently watched the movie again and to my surprise her screaming words at the end of the movie were “assassin !assassin! “😀
She has two... One for leading actor(female), and supporting actor(female) for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978) respectively !! Thank God she is recognised, Academy has record being shitty to talents !!
She is a wonderful, humorous, down to earth human being and one of the greatest actresses of our time. I just watched 'The best exotic Marigold hotel' again yesterday, and seeing her, along with Judi Dench, is the best mix for a wonderful evening ;)
Today is Sept 10, 2024. I’m an old guy, age 75, and remember Dame Maggie with great memories. She was in many movies in her life, both Theaters and TV and have great such memories of her performances. According to this article, she’s 89 years old. I’m not sure of all her work but remember being a fan of all of them.
This is one of the greatest actrices ever. She can play the phonebook. Give her anything in any movie with any great star, and she will act them completely of the screen.
Never saw Downton Abbey, nor Miss Brodie, but I do love Dame Maggie of Travels With My Aunt, Sister Act and Harry Potter. I absolutely must see The Lady in the Van, which I just found out about here. I have been homeless, myself, and I knew an 81 year old lady who lived in her van, so there's something to which I can relate.
She has brought so much richness to the set of Downton Abbey. It's my first time seeing her - given that I'm not a Harry Potter fan. What a wonderful career and a beautifully talented actor
Love this woman! My 1st maggie movie was Clash of Titians that came out 4 years before I was born. Loved her ever since. Everything she has ever done has been perfection.
The interviewer could not really comprehend that she did not really appreciate or want to see that old film of she and Carol Burnett. Also one really sees the awkwardness between the american mentality and British. Having lived and adapted to both I can see and feel it very profoundly. My experience with people like Dame Maggie is they live in the present and don't look back unless there is a point. That is the secret to their longevity and youthful outlook on life.
Yes, I immediately recognized her discomfort, but people can get so caught up in their good intentions that they sometimes overlook other's feelings. That's an interesting interpretation. I thought that she found watching the video (and by extension, looking into her past) terribly sad-- the way you remember happier times that you can never again eclipse. I suspect it has something to do with their stages in life. He still looks fondly into the past with a sense of nostalgia, whereas she seems to regard it as a fossil record..."those were the days," and these are the last hours of dusk, so to speak. No wonder she doesn't watch her own work. It's a reminder of her mortality. But I don't think this is a differentiation between American/British mentality. It's something of a timeless, universal theme. Or did I misunderstand you? Did you mean Americans are more emotionally expressive whereas the British are more emotionally reserved? The proverbial "stiff upper lip?"
+globalman I also think it's just her personality, she doesn't seem to enjoy looking back at the past. Very in the now. I was surprised how nice she was to him. Have seen some interviews where she has made her contempt for the interviewer as clear as she could without using obscenities.
She was sitting with a gay fawning interviewer (who could blame him); I am sure she saw this and responded in her usual, wry way. How about reuniting her with Carol?
@6:49: Maggie sounds just like her adversary in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' = The great Celia Johnson as Miss. Mackay!; it's as if she's subconsciously channeling her....
A treasure of British arts. And from over the pond I want to say thank you for sharing her. Y'all her films are magnificent. Her stage work is beyond measure. See all you can, and know the depth of this amazing actress BEFORE Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.
I will remember her as McGonagall too. The roll couldn't be better for her. And I'll buy her Wand as soon as I can. I hate to say this, but:" Ten points for Gryffindor" Damn, that was hard, but I treat it to Gryffindor and to McGonagall, I'm a good Slytherin💚🐍🏰
I never really knew Maggie Smith until the Harry Potter series. It wasn't until I read the comments section of a clip when I realized her significance in acting and film.
Maggie Smith seems rather unconcerned with the past, quite eager to go on to the next project with hardly a backward glance. It's hard to know whether or not she was grateful of, or even pleased with, her time on Downton Abbey.
They were pretty grateful to have had her though I'd bet, because she was a HUGE part of why Downton was a success. I think she's just a true actress. Gives her all to each performance and then leaves it there to move to the next one and giver her all to that one
First time I saw her in "Keeping Mum" ... I was spellbound by her act.. she was indeed a Grace.. her acting is very captivating and realistic.. there is some magic in her voice..
She once said she never gave him an advice about career and never encourage her sons to follow her footsteps, so it means he's a great actor by nature. :D
The interviewer keeps slaughtering her humour. She keeps making small jokes and he kinda answers in an expressionless, kinda not-feeling-it way. Was a bit annoying.
Steven Barker his name is Mo Rocca (birth name is Maurice Rocca) and he is a journalist, humorist and actor. He used to be a regular correspondent on The Daily Show from 1998-2003. I remember seeing him on The Daily Show back in the day, both with Craig Kilborn and Jon Stewart.
The first time I saw the peerless Maggie Smith was as the tragic Judith Hearne in the incredibly sad film 'The Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne'. A shamefully overlooked and relatively unknown film from 1988 which also starred Bob Hoskins. Any one who hasn't seen this classic gem simply MUST see it.
I felt the same as Dame Maggie. As a Brit living in the States, my first memories of visiting NY was That it’s like being in a movie. And now living in Los Angeles, i too notice the brightness and was told many years later the lighting here is different and thus a great location in which to film.
I’m so fond of Dame Maggie Smith What a life!!! Talented actor, gifted humorist, and clever as ever always. I appreciate her contributions to entertainment. I always know it’s going to be worth watching when her name appears. I very much admire her for not having her face mucked up by plastic surgeons. She ages gracefully and is just perfection💁🏻♀️
🥰 she was in the VIPs 1963 with Rod Taylor and I just thought her and her “bitter lemons” were hilarious 😂😂 not to mention a cast of Orson Welles, Elizabeth Taylor, Louis Jordán, and Richard Burton. Dame Smith has always held her own on the screen 👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽
Like all truly great actors and actresses, Maggie Smith is a purely imaginative creator of characters. No Method nonsense about "life logic", "sense memory", or "relating" to props. A great artist in every sense.
She's a very intimidating interview because she's no nonsense and not really a talker especially about herself. She really would be a level above Judi Densch if not getting type caste early into overly confident powerful roles such that no one cast her as really vulnerable etc.
Some actresses PEAK in their twenties and it's a constant state of anxiety to keep up with the next flock of pretty starlets who get the leads and star opposite men twice their age. Maggie Smith upgrades every scene in which she appears. She looks better, more herself, as an older woman. We are lucky to have her as an example of tenacity into the ages!
She is lovely. One of the best. I was going to use an exclamation point after "One of the best", but then I thought Dame Maggie Smith might disapprove.
I think that so many people, undoubtedly unfamiliar with Mo Rocca's very unique and very dry sense of humor, failed to see what at least I felt that I saw. It looked to me that she very much enjoyed him, and he was clearly in awe if her. It was sort of a "nod, nod, wink, wink" beginning to end, at least once they began to understand each other. And, I think they enjoyed playing off of each other. I believe what others have also observed, that Maggie Smith would have simply cut the interview short had she not enjoyed it. I didn't see one place in the interview to make me think otherwise, as she never pulled her punches, while Mo, in utter awe of Maggie sought to play the foil to whatever direction she took on, further highlighting her, as he should have. In fact, I felt that I saw just a hint of flirtation, which I found very intriguing.
Thanks God Harry Potter came in screens, otherwise i would never know this awesome masterpiece artist in region where i live) The Lady in The Van is spectacular story, she is such a strong woman, reading her biography, i wish her good health, hapinnes and many many roles to come

She's got a good sense of humour
