I thought Penelope's acting after her on-screen son Matthew died was stellar. It was the little nuances in her facial expressions, the eyes suddenly veiling over with a thin film of tears, the quiver in her voice, all the while staying dignified and generous. I really felt for her character, I could feel her grief.
She's outstanding, exceptional . I loved her!
I think penelope’s an amazing actress. She impressed me the most of the series.

@@daimhaus It means that but in the UK it's more than that. It's an honorific title, the feminine form of address the honour of damehood.
Honours are given by the Queen/monarch. They are used to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service. When a person is a respected invididual who has been especially brave or succesfull and has brought pride for the country in one way or another, the Queen can make them knights (men) or dames (women). Men have the honorific title "Sir" to address the honour of the knighthood - and women "Dame" for the honour of the damehood (=female equivalent for knighthood). Out of respect those people are called by the title - as it should because those are not given lightly. Damehood/knighthood is a huge recognition.

I love that clip of Maggie and Penelope together. So sweet and endearing. Penelope has such a sweet voice. I love how she opened up about how she admires Maggie and I love Maggies response. So humble. Those two are gold together (both on and off screen). Two of my heroines!

There will never be another TV series of this calibre. You could sit back for an hour every week for many years and totally escape into a world that is so foreign to most of us, but fascinating at the same time. I would like to think there will be something new to rival it at some stage, but I believe this was the pinnacle of British period drama.
@MrSteamDragon ... Yes, I agree, Downton was a truly special series of the highest quality, I always looked forward to watching it. Like you, I would like to think that at some point another programme will come along to equal this, bettering it though will be an almost impossible task.
I have to agree with you. These are immersion seasons. We can lose ourselves in their happenings.

…. Although… thinking of this again… Foyles War was exceptionally well done too. Mr Horowitz’s writing in that series and the attention to detail in the production was phenomenal.

I never knew I could be so hooked ,I watched 1 and 2 seasons in that 1 day ,and now I am watching 3 season but after work so from 5pm till 10 pm

@Shelly D, I agree. Isobel was my favorite--with Cybil, then Rose. They were written as if they knew that "aristocracy" and "royalty" were exactly what they are--a charade and a much ado--unless one is using the charade to do good.
Penelope's character Isobel was my absolute favorite on the show, she was very kind and very progressive in her thinking. Mrs. Patmore was also a favorite of mine.

Phyllis Logan is my favorite in all of the characters. She presents a strong, wise, self-aware person who knows her limitations and the limitations of human kind. I like to imagine her character as a young woman learning her craft and learning about life.
Her character is one of my favorites. I couldn't believe it when I read that she and Kevin Doyle (Mr Molesley) were an item for a while

I had a dream that I met Maggie Smith last night. If only... One of the things that I love about her is that she can be the Queen of Shade on the screen, but is so shy and humble in real life. That is a true artist.

Watching this video explains why and how the British do an excellent job at making programs. They are meticulous about every aspect of the jobs that they do. Bravo !
Time period pieces are great ,but is the acting ,directing and all that goes into a fabulous production like this that makes for an unbelievable series ,Dame Maggie Smith is fabulous as usual,her witt is like nobody else and of course one amazing cast !
I watched Downton Abbey each week it aired. Every special. The movie.
Then binge watched the entire series from start to finish at least three times since its release. Just two weeks ago my husband chose to watch the entirety WITH me. I am still over the moon!
I felt like I was sharing my family and friends with him. 💖 He really enjoyed it. Now I cannot wait for the next movie. 👍
I didn't watch it at first when it came on, started seeing during the last season but then binged watched it on Prime, have done so several times now just finished again on Netflix my husband who is British and at times reminds me of a mix between Carson and Violet. We got to see the movie in England as it was first out there, and just can't get enough of this show!!
I had the same feeling, as if I was part of the crew.

It must be great, as an actor, to have the opportunity to work with Dame Maggie Smith, and admire that level of incredible natural talent, equally as much as one does watching her as a viewer and being totally drawn in to the character. To me, that is the sign of sheer brilliance, and she ranks with the Greats as far as I am concerned.
I always loved period dramas but by far and wide, this is the best I’ve ever seen in every aspect. Totally and utterly enthralling

They're doing a movie! Not quite the same but something to look forward to.
It would be a great open ended sequel. Perhaps a decade or two from where the series (or movie) ends.
I can get all the seasons from my library. In the middle of rewatching it all. I really miss it, too.

Perfect casting for this series! What a rocking brilliant triumph for the BBC - the best in the entire world! I literally grieved each time a member dropped out and again when the it all ended .. I so wish they’d start again ❤️
Seriously one of the best series ever.
It must have been hard on the family who live at Highclere Castle, to be invaded monthly, despite the fees paid by the movie studio to rent it. But imagine this show anywhere else, it would never have been the same. The castle was so grand and striking in beauty, that it became one of the characters in the show as well. I was struck dumb by that beauty in every opening shot. Thank you Highclere Castle owners!
As you can see in the show Downton Abbey needed to be self-sufficient. The same also applies to Highclere Castle. This is one way in which it remains, without falling into ruin - to use a theme from the show. :)
You should visit one day. Hope you get the chance. There are many other great houses and palaces up and down the country, which are open to the public. Some are bigger and other smaller, but each with their own history. Without tourism they would be almost impossible to maintain.
I imagine they had some other house or space to live in if it got unbearable.

Why is Siobhan so naughty though 😂 Honestly she's so funny and i just love her 😍 Also it just clearly proves what an incredible talent she is that someone as kind, warm and funny as that can play someone so horrid and cold and make so many people hate her! I love O'Brien and i feel like it was a shame they never explored her background or personal life more like they did with the others because she wasn't 100% evil, she was very complex and Siobhan portrayed that perfectly! ❤xxx
I love watching both Maggie Smith & Penelope Wilton’s love hate to hate love relationship..🤣 Their sparing of wits, sarcasm and bitchiness always intrigue me immensely…Love all the cast of Downton Abbey. Best drama series I’ve ever seen! Kudos to everyone….👍👍👍

What I love about Dame Maggie is not only her great talent but also her style. Love her haircuts and clothing.
My maternal grandmother was married in 1920 though not aristocracy, a rural girl from the farmlands of the upper Midwest. The period fashion was lovely to see. Lady Mary's wedding dress and veil were just exquisite; I imagined seeing Grandma in her dress when Mary came down the main staircase...

My favorite series. I only wish it could go on and on and on. If General Hospital went on for 10 years I think, how come Downton Abbey doesn’t? Please keep on doing it!

My wife and I just finished watching every episode of Downton. We enjoyed it very much and we were sad to see it end.
All my respect and admiration for Mr. Julian Fellows, the creator of this wonderful story, characters, .......for the minute description of such a wide range of events,, characters , just for re-creating the atmosphere and environment at that time ...He's succeeded wonderfully !.... along with the actors and the whole team that made that visible ....

There is only a few books that I have read that I would read over and over, and so are only a few movies that I would enjoy watching more than one time. In a few words I love what Mr. Fellows is doing with Downton Abby, and the actors and actresses are wonderful playing their parts. I will enjoy it as long as it is a available. Thank you.

i am extremely late to this glorious party. but im okay with it. this show came to me when i needed it to. started watching it with my mother who was already a season in a month or so ago and i couldn't stop. i've just finished it last night on my own but im absolutely going back to catch all that i missed even tho my mother and context clues helped me piece things along. this show has changed me, this little rough n tough black girl. well, it saved me moreso. never cried watching anything else as much as i cried watching this splendor and heartbreak and sheer brilliance. to think that i found a show that takes me away from it all, like the walking dead did (a complete 180, i know 🥴) and more, says quite a lot. i loved it and will continue to love it. thank you to everyone who made it possible. thank you for bringing joy and love back into my troubled heart.
This morning I watched Maggie Smith on the old Carol Burnett show. I kept seeing The Dowager Countess, although she was so young.

Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton are basically Granny and Isobel! hahahaha My favorite pair at Downton hands down. Loved watching their moment there. So happy to know they are friends

Just finished binge watching DA for the second time. Enjoyed it more the second time. I just wish I had been able to visit the Biltmore when they had the DA exhibit. I am such a big fan. Waiting for the new movie to come out.
Siobhan Finneran was incredible with that menacing Sweeney Todd vibe of hers. There's one scene with the character Edith (the one who got knocked up by the soldier) where she stares at her with those dead shark eyes as she tells her "be careful what you wish for"-- makes my blood run cold!
Best TV show ever. I love everyone but Maggie Smith is my favorite.

O'Brien and Thomas were evil personified.. Ugh. Can't believe Thomas made it in the end, but more times than not, evil prevails. Ugh. …. PEACE to ALL ….
O'Brien is actually one of my favourite characters because Siobhan Finneran was able to make her such a complex character. I was quite upset when she left after the 3rd season because I was totally intrigued by the relationship between Thomas and O'Brien. I love that the "baddies" in this show turn out to be among the most interesting and complex characters, as they often are.
Siobhan Finneran is one of the most versatile actors in the business. She’s also brilliant in Benidorm which is a completely different programme.
This was such a well done series!
Lady Carnarvon is the best! She embraces everything required to keep the great ship Highclere afloat with grace, love and dignity.
Downtown Abbey was a great series. The actors from upstairs to downstairs were all great!!! Love the era ,place, actors. Such a joy to watch, good scripts, great acting, joy,joy!!!🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️

The great thing about this series is it shows that even 100 years ago, though the struggles may have been different, people were just as challenged by life and had to overcome just as much as they do today. Today people look at the complexities of our modern world and think no group of people ever had so much to contend with as we do today when in reality, life and the world people live today is no more challenging than the world of 100, 200, or 1000 years ago. Which is encouraging because the triumphs of 100, 200, and 1000 years ago can be experienced today in equal measure.
