IM NOT KIDDING WHEN I SAY THIS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT VIDEO EVER! It literally summarized everything I’ve doing wrong and took my drawing to the next level. Thank you so much
Actually though - I've been trying to develop my ability with pen and ink on my own for years, thinking 'all it takes it practice, and it will come' but what you're making accessible to us here Alphonso has let me understand how to really make my practising something that's actually proving my ability instead of just confusing me further lol
Wow. The simple fact that you lettered your corners has changed everything for me. This made shading so much easier. Thank you so much for making these videos.
What a skilled teacher you are! Your explanations are so clear and consistent. For the first time, I feel like I’m grasping these principles after years of frustration. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you Alphonso, you have liberated my mind and improve my well being through your drawing lessons. Big hug from France. Merci beaucoup monsieur Dunn.
Thanks. Got back in the habit due to it being a nice past time and test of my brain's empty space thanks for showing the variations. The anchor points are a good tip so my drawings feel like they have more depth and a bit more realism in it.
Alphonso, not only your art is breathtaking, but your art in explaining things is unparalleled. I love both of your books. I hope you come up with a third book with more exercises, and a fourth book that may cover any possible skill that may not have been covered in your preview books. Thanks for sharing all this wonderful knowledge....
Thank you! I wondered how to do this for the longest time but you nailed it! Anchoring the plain with A, B, C, and D then playing with the perspective of the shape made understanding how to shade so much easier. Thank you for taking your time to explain this concept. 🥰
Your videos are SO useful. I'm primarily a digital artist, but I think there's so much to be learnt from traditional art. Thank you for putting these amazing resources out there for all us learning artists. Your channel is like a gold mine for me and I can't wait to binge everything lol
Stick with this video! I thought it was going to be far too complicated for me but then I got my lightbulb moment. Alphonso, you are not only a wonderful artist but a truly gifted teacher and a beautiful person.
I’m preparing to do a HUGE drawing of a murmuration. I want to use toroidal shapes formed by the individual birds--I plan on applying this tutorial to those shapes, with the individual birds arranged as the substitute vertical, horizontal and diagonal cross hatches--you have helped me visualize this process and how to go about preparing the shapes and applying the proper bird values to accentuate them …..thanks!!!!
Thank you for sharing & posting your knowledge. Your explanations are methodical and very well thought out, progression is consistent. I am your number one fan! I still refer people to your channel though l stopped teaching watercolours / oils several years .
This is something that I like inherently got, but am never able to realize well enough to execute. Immediately you've broken it down and explained it so simply I think I may have a chance. I'll be coming back to this video a bunch, this is wonderful stuff thank you.
Wow! Just the first 4 minutes of instruction explained so much! Thank you, thank you! When I first started trying to draw in pen and ink 30 years ago, there was no video instructions on anything, and I had to rely entirely on books, which are a lot harder to follow than visual demonstration. This makes things SO much easier, and I am SO grateful.😃
Isn't it a marvel, to be able to have a question, and simply go find out how to do it?! Instead of trying for years and possibly just giving up altogether. Absolutely stunning. I am grateful every day.
It is one of the best video I saw on this subjects. Fundamentals are explained in such an easy to understand way. Well done. Thank you....👍Great learning
That makes so much sense. I would look at your drawings in Ig and wonder how you did that in pen. I’m a trained oil painter. I like drawing in ink more though
I feel it useful. A good pedagogue. Step by step. One can follow the master without being lost. I will suscribe and practice. The 2 books and especially exercises one are great !
Such an important concept! Even if you don't use lines, "visualize" this lines helps you understand how to shadow correctly. Thank you for the video. Looking forward for the "consistency video" I really struggle with large strokes consistency!
What a great tutorial. Thank you so much! Now, I am thinking what is difference between shading and cross hatching if you are using a pencil? Is one preferred over the other? Or ultimately they are the same thing, and cross hatching is a method of shading?
This is perfect. I was looking for the examples on the curvatures. I do have a question though. If we are hatching say a finger that is curved, or in a fist. the direction changes. I find my hatching looking very strange when the direction changes. How do I hatch elegantly or seamlessly? I need to look through your videos on building values too. I'm pretty bad at it now
Q: if you’re converging Horizontal strokes toward the vanishing point, shouldn’t you also make the vertical strokes get closer to each other (denser) as they go back in space on a plane? Similar to how light posts look like they get closer to each other as they go away in space. Superior video, as always!
True, that does happen but for our purposes we can ignore that effect. Remember, our lines are not representing actual objects, but to convey value (while aligning with the 3D shape of the form.) I know it may seem contrary. but in this case, if we do that, then the viewer will think value gradation which isnt our intent
I feel like God/the universe smiled down upon me when I was looking up inking different textures and I discovered your channel. Thank you so much for all you do, and I'm already a better artist just from a few videos. Will you be doing streaming at any point?
Awesome video explaining this principle, thank you! I’d like to know how you go about choosing which type of line to use vertical, horizontal, or diagonal). Is this in an earlier video? Does choosing one direction over another impact the way the form is communicated?
Mr Dunn, I have been struggling with contour lines, of actually getting the intended curve in them, even though I am practicing exercises and drills. So I am digging through your videos in hopes of finding some help with that - and come across this video. Which isn't actually the answer to my issue, but wow it addresses another issue I have also been grappling with. Thank you as always for your patient, clear, repeated instructions that make it all simple and unavoidable to understand and learn.
If I work in ink and watercolor, and I like to have the watercolor quite strong in terms of value and saturation, do you think I should use less ink lines? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I wish I could multi-like videos Alphonso 😋 if I could I would spam this one with likes all day long lol Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge about your experience with these concepts :)

Excellent tutorial. It really helps when you label the vertices.
this was the most helpful thing I've watched for drawing
This is such a powerful yet deceivingly simple way of thinking about curved surfaces. Thank you! Brilliant!
This changed a lot for me, i didn't realize a LOT of mistakes. Thank u so much
Thank you! This clarifies a huge point of confusion! Blessings to you!
This video is one of the most important videos!!! Helped me a lot!!!! If your book were for sale in Brazil I would buy it without thinking twice
One of the best videos ever. Thanks so much for such a clear understandable explanation
It helped me a lot. I and studying your book and it's valuable coming on here to fix more the lessons I've been learning.
THE MOST IMPORTANT VIDEO EVER Thank you so much for making these videos.
this one is very helpful for the beginners . It cleared up some confusions I had about hatching before. Thanks !

Thanks so much! Very important to know and confusing, but you really helped me understand how this works. Thanks!
I'm teaching cross-hatching shading to my art students on Wednesday. This is a great visual of what I want to show them!
Are you doing a third book? I’m almost done with both of mine and love the way you’ve layed everything out
Thank you for sharing & posting your knowledge. Your explanations are methodical and very well thought out, progression is consistent. I am your number one fan! I still refer people to your channel though l stopped teaching watercolours / oils several years .

This is genius! Thanks for explaining it so clearly! It finally clicked in my brain
It is one of the best video I saw on this subjects. Fundamentals are explained in such an easy to understand way. Well done. Thank you....👍Great learning
The crazy part for me is I’m actually understanding 😮❤
This was really helpful I tend to shade rather haphazardly and wondered why some of my shading looked better for some forms and worse for others.
Watched the first video and the second I saw the books...BOUGHT THEM BOTH...Instantlly
Best I have seen on the subject! Just ordered both books! Thank you, sir.
Such a useful video. Thank you so much for sharing your skill and knowledge.
every single one of your videos is mindblowing, but this one in particular is gold!!!!! thank you soooo much
Im so much grateful this channel existed
This is great. I’ve been wondering about this stuff so much since I started drawing. Thank you
Really looking forward to seeing these concepts applied in real time to fully rendered facial features and portraits.
Muchas gracias por sus consejos, todos son muy útiles. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Lástima que no esté subtitulado en español.

I loved this video, and the entire series!! Thank you
Thanks so much, amazing teaching from an amazing teacher
Great Master of Cross Hatching.

GAME CHANGER! That made it a lot simpler, thank u
Great teacher, very clear. I bought both books💪
Thanks so much for this, it really helped A LOT. 👍

God damn... why is it just so satisfying watching you draw?! Another great episode!!

The only topic i needed and was searching for very desperately was this.....thnks a lot bruh....appreciated👏❤️

Excellent guidance and detail..
Thanks for upload this video! Very useful!
Thanks for this valuable lesson
12:57 is there a rule that says where to use shorter straight lines and where long curved ones?
Like your vids btw
Just a matter of stylistic choice.
Thank you for this video. What about if there is multiple component in that drawings? How should we decide where is A,B, C and D?
Excellent. Thank you!
Awesome video explaining this principle, thank you! I’d like to know how you go about choosing which type of line to use vertical, horizontal, or diagonal). Is this in an earlier video? Does choosing one direction over another impact the way the form is communicated?
Respect from Russia, thx man
This was so useful thanks a lot!
Thanks. Clear and to the point.
