Without a doubt the most usefull tutorial fot learning to draw figures from imagination!
Sorry to break your nut but this is not the most uselfull
But it's a bit helpful I guess?
@@luxurious0346 Which tutorial would you call the most useful?
@@IuriSigma this isn't very professional tbh, reading the books by the masters is more helpful imo
@@ipotatosenpai7002 Which book would you recommend for example? I don't read much, but maybe I could glance at something useful in that case.
@@IuriSigma hello I know you are asking someone else but on amazon you can find the graphic works of leonardo and michelangelo for cheap. You can see their marks and how they build the figures. Glenn vilppu is one of the most competent artists out there, also bridgman is insightful. If you want you can buy michael hampton book, his instructor was Glenn
45 minutes?? You deserve all the success that comes your way!
for me is 2times longer, I'm watching&following teacher in half slow speed : ) THANK YOU for your time professor Alph , you helps me to understand a lot ! : -) U r Great!
it's the quality that matters not the length of a video

I’m a pre nursing student. It’s amazing how what I’ve learned in anatomy goes hand in hand with improving my drawing. You’re such an amazing teacher, my drawings have improved tremendously in just a matter of minutes watching your tutorials. Thank you for helping me get back into tapping into my creativity, I’m so thankful I found your channel!

Man, I freaking love his tutorials. he explains so thoroughly.
I always have ideas in my head that I cannot draw how I want them to be cuz I'm not good enough
(who can relate?)
So I am now doing all kinds of drawing practices and he's definitely one of my most favourite teachers.
I can relate, I have such good ideas just to be smashed by my inability to draw well
@@homiespaghetti1522 yeah I feel you. just a little practice each day, not stressing it, taking it day by day, just enjoying the progress and we'll definitely get there. We only have to avoid being overwhelmed so the goal is only a bit every day regardless of the outcome
@@Thandidladla thank you for the encouragement. My drawing skills have increased dramatically since first seeing this video and I hope the best for you
@@homiespaghetti1522 ay man makes me happy to read that you've been progressing so much! I wish you all the best on your journey as well, I'll see you at the peak of the mountain
FACTS!
He's actually my favorite, hands-down. He's very thorough, yet teaches in a very relative and simplified way. He's a great artist and instructor!
Best of wishes on your pursuits, Thandi.
absolutely amazing teaching

Excellent video. So impressed with what I learned with this fist video I subscribed. Thank you so much for posting this for us.
My passion for drawing is like a flip-flop, i sometimes becomes so immerse in listening and watching videos, but before the advent of internet in the Phillipines, i rely mostly from drawing and painting books, it started in 1975 during my high schools years, when i came across with my fellow classmates and schoolmates who were already good at it, they inspired me then . Unfortunately i was not focus on any skill, that's why my mind wandered from one trade to another. Times just flew very fast from age 14, im now 61 years old with no progress whatsoever being a jack of all trades but master of none. My desire suddenly was revived a few weeks ago and started looking for the old materials and tools that we already had, to start all over again, actually my daughter has enrolled in a short art course and has done a number of drawings and paintings to get ahead over me by a a lot of stride. Just recently ive ordered some art materials to kick off my long lost desire in this art. Ive actually watched you a few years back before the pandemic and even copied your manequin approch, I forgot your name, then just search again here , voila i rediscovered you once again and thank you for refreshing me. Good luck to your channel.
You know you have the same story as I do when it come to my longing to draw only I'm 68 and I'm in the US. I hope you are doing well on your journey rediscovering your art.
@@aburgosneely This comment of mine as year ago, thanks for noticing it. What you have just replied was amusing. Even though this was long time ago, im actually glued on my laptop daily thats why, if theres a notification coming or popping up i will see it. Actually it is a back and forth thing right now. Only God knows when i can finish a whole painting that i can be proud of. My location is Philippines. Im wishing you a good health and enjoying life.
I'm 27 and have struggled to draw human figure since grade school. This's the stuff that teachers never taught me to do and I never really understood why drawing humans is so hard for me. Feeling inspired to finally stick to learning poses and anatomy now! I'm also starting school of fine arts next month so hopefully I'm able to put this stuff into good use there :) Thank you! ❤
I hope you're doing good, is it wroth going to a art school
This literally helped me more than my 3 years of art classes in school. You're great at teaching others, based on the comment section, and it's amazing. Thank you!

I have learned more drawing skills from this man, than from anyone else in my entire lifetime. Thank you so much for this !
I have a masters degree in studio art and have never had any interest in drawing from the imagination - only from life - but I am very glad I watched this. Actually I have watched it repeatedly. I believe it is helping me to draw better from life because it helps me better see the forms in life and remember them from the moment I look up at them to the moment I look down at my paper. Also, knowing what I am looking for and what to expect helps me better see where the particular model is like and differs from my memorized shapes, and helps me to more efficiently get on paper what I am looking at. Thanks, Mr. Dunn!
I can not give enough gratitude for what you placed into this video!! Your first book just arrived, the workbook will come Monday. I’m especially grateful for you releasing your book digitally!! I live in a 1 room cabin without much room for books. Digital really helps. These videos are timeless in their instructions and understanding. Thank you!!
I bought a wooden mannequin but I find it kinda limited when it comes to dynamic poses.
I have created a new mannequin out of pipe cleaners that I can put into *any* pose, regardless of complexity.
Mannequins are a great source for reference and information.
Yes they are! Thats a smart idea
@Nadia Syeda Here's one tutorial ua-cam.com/video/S5CPPZk3PGI/v-deo.html

Young artist here. My art teacher has us drawing from life and imagination, Im struggling pretty bad. I’m a beginner and this helped me a lot. I do pretty good at copying images and references but I suck at drawing from imagination. Thank you and keep up the good work!
These are truly amazing UA-cam videos. Thank you so much for making them available to the public.

What a teacher!!!
ua-cam.com/video/LeqeZfCFeOs/v-deo.html
Hey Alphonso just wanted to give you a very very big thank you. I started drawing 1 year ago today, and it was your videos that were the foundation of my learning, and continue to be an inspiration as my learning continues. Also your book should arrive tomorrow, the least support I can give back to you. Thanks man please keep them coming. How about a nice hand and foreshortening vid??
+Steve N thanks so much for supporting my book. That should be in the works soon, dont worry
+Alphonso Dunn Hey Alphanso. You're awesome at drawing.. why didn't you get into concept art or fine art or something? Just curious
are the drawings on your youtube channel banner yours ?
ua-cam.com/video/LeqeZfCFeOs/v-deo.html
You are such a gifted teacher. I'm forever grateful for your gifts and that you out time and effort into sharing g those gifts with us. Bless you man. 🙏
Another thing about foreshortening that's important to think of is the point of reference.
if you're viewing a foreshortened object from a distant POV, all parts will appear to be proportionately sound. However, the closer you get to said object, the larger the outermost part will appear, relative to the rest.
So if you put your hand on your face, it'll appear larger, in comparison to whatever's behind it. When you extend your hand further away from your face, it appears to shrink.
It seems intuitive once you acknowledge it, but believe me, it is something a lot of beginners fail to understand.
ua-cam.com/video/LeqeZfCFeOs/v-deo.html
This guy's a great teacher. I've been really struggling with this stuff despite my attempts to learn. I'm really thankful this is free!
ua-cam.com/video/LeqeZfCFeOs/v-deo.html
I don't normally have the attention span for a 40 minute tutorial but I'm glad I watched yours! Fantastic!
Glad you were able to stick through it : )
A mannequin was included with a graphite pencil set I bought. I used to use it to keep me company while drawing. After watching this video, I realized the thing can actually talk. Practicing these tips, “Bishop” is no longer a block of wood, a mannequin, he’s my new best friend thanks to the information in this video.
I really appreciate you sharing your drawing tips in all your videos my friend.
❤️
The circle and basic shapes you draw look better than anything i have ever drawn in my life *cries in struggle artist*

Absolutely amazing. You have given us a cornucopia of advice and guidance. You are a master teacher of drawing. I will watch your videos over and over to improve my drawing technique, and I'm going to buy your book. You are so generous to share your expertise in so many tutorials and it's great that you've ordered them so well to make it easier for us to access what we want. Many many thanks.

You are an AMAZING teacher. Got an MFA recently and none of my instructors were anywhere near as clear and informative. You'd be a perfect professor if you aren't one already.
: ) thanks so much
It's a good thing I'm retired. I'm mesmerized by your tutorials and working my way through the list. I truly understand the value of creating my own figures. Freedom versus copying. Thanks so much.

I just purchased your book from Amazon. I've been watching your channel for years. Love your instruction. Thank you for posting these videos. It really helps to inspire me to draw more.
ua-cam.com/video/LeqeZfCFeOs/v-deo.html
I can't explain how helpful this has been, certainly the best teacher on the internet
Brilliant masterclass for those who are beginners on drawing and painting. Appreciate your dedication and time for this video! Only the best instructors can do it with paper and pencil. Love this kind of explanation.
Hey man, thanks for this series. It was starting to drive me a little nuts that I had made such progress with the loomis and Reilly Method; but was still struggling to see the simple mannequin. I see now I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. Honestly if I could do it over again; I would probably study this series, your portrait series, and loomis first; and put off the other figure drawing methods that seemed to muddy my progress a tad. But we all learn differently, and I believe that being able to recognize and admit the things you still don’t understand becomes more important but also more difficult as we advance through skills. But that is just my humble opinion.
Thanks again for what you do,
Charles L

this really was great. i’ve been stuck in block in my drawings due to lacking the foundation and this helped a ton. thank you.

5 years ago, man... You are really the best, you could teach me how to use my mannequins that have been gathering dust for the past 10 years. You sir are the best and deserve everything good that you have so far and quite more.
imho, this is the most comprehensive, extensive and sensible guide about the mannequin on youtube, and even in the whole internet, a great companion and practice, whatever the method used. thank you so much for being such a good teacher
Thanks so much. I appreciate that. Glad you found it useful
Amazing teachings! I will thank you and gift me with your book.
thanks for the support : )
me too. i found in amazon

Please, don't ever take this video down. This just opened a whole new world for me!
This is a video every struggling artist must watch !
I ve been struggling on Human figures and gesture for 45 days now, i ve watched countless tutorials, bought books ( which i dont regret) and still catch the grisp of how to practice without reference.
The problem was that no one teaches (or no one i ve watched or read about ) basic methods that you can use to map out the things you learn from anatomy and gesture.
So i went on and tried every step you showed, and FINALLY everything involving the human figure made sense AND it s simple enough to fill sketchbooks with it... Thank you so much, you ve broken my biggest creative blockade yet and i ll definetly check out your book !
Good shit mate.... good shit.
Glad I could help! 🙂
On a holiday now, as soon as im back home, im buying your book. Cheers mate.
omg this tutorial helped me out! I can finally draw normal but also dynamic fighting poses, i can't thank you enough!

I watch (and read the book) your lessons again and again, and always find something new. Just like digging deeper into the skill. Thank you, Mr.Dunn, for great teaching and motivation!!!

Thank you for all the time you put into this and for all the fantastic examples! You make a terrific art teacher because you inspire and make people think we could actually do this! Looking forward to watching your other videos! As a 48 year old woman who was not inspired in my high school art class, I continue to long to illustrate children's Christian books one day, should God let me live long enough! I just bought a bunch of drawing how to books on ebay last night but now see that you have books for sale. I'll keep that in mind come my next paycheck! Keep up the great work! God bless!
I have been trying to learn draw poses for months, and I just found the best video to learn from 👌🔥

PS My better half was wondering what the pencil is you're using..I thought it may be a sort of drafting type?

Alphonso I can't thank you enough for taking the time and effort to make this video. I'm trying to grow my drawing skill and I found this video SO helpful. The Way you explained and articulated was so easy to follow and to understand. I took a drawing class in college but the teacher was completely the opposite with no desire to be there. I learned very little from that one expensive class. I learned a lot from your video in just under 1 hour. Thank you so much. I wish you all the success in the world!
Thanks much and youre very welcome : )
No need to attend my art classes any more ; your there..THANKS a lot for putting a lot of effort this video , my word can never say how happy am I am . Please never stop making videos like this because your the best .

Agreed. Great vid! Learned a lot! Cheers!
شكراً كثير الك طريقه شرحك كتير حلو وانا مستفيده كتير منك شكراً 😊👍
that starting out with a cylinder vs a block blew my mind, I swear you're a genius
The proportion breakdown was a tremendous help to me. I would draw mannequins before and would just wing it until it looked right. Now I'm able to get every mannequin to be consistent.
Really appreciate the info!
You have very nice finger nails.
every person that i see i have to look at one thing to tell if i like them or not. one of them is fingernails. HE BE LOOKIN NICE I COULD TELL. then other one is noses and eyebrows. THERE JUST SO ATTRACTIVE XDXDXD i hope im not the only one

I can't tell you how helpful this was! I was intimidated by figure drawing, but not any more .This tutorial showed me an easy way to get the proportions right, that works for more or less all kinds of poses. Just what I needed! Thanks so much!
Glad I could help. The mannequin was a big help for me as well
Honestly, I have watched a lot of videos explaining the same thing with 100% diff. ways, but you are the best teacher who explains in a simple way without making us feel that this is a real complicated thing.
I do have a background on drawing a mannequin, but what you shared with everyone, showed how knowledgeable you are other than everyone.
Many thanks to you!!

master artist Alphonso Dunn is like,
"lets just make a simple little master piece. now lets make a happy little master piece.
ah, oops, I made a small mistake there but that's OK, it turned into a masterpiece because I looked at it."
an absolute monster with the pen, huge inspiration and one of if not the best art teacher, you are outstanding Alphonso! thank you for all you do!

Alphonso Dunn help is an understatement. You really are incredible with the pen. Someday I’ll get there. Someday...
