I notice your Insta360 selfie stick also droops and wiggles loose while you ride. For me it's not the handlebar mount, that's been really good, it's the spot where the stick screws o to the handlebars mount. I really like the camera but that selfie stick needed some locking mechanism to prevent rotating loose. I tighten the crap out of it and I still need to watch it regularly or I think the camera might drop off. I'm thinking of getting a second clamp to secure it better.
I bought an NX500 back in June of this year. Spent the summer riding it on one lane twisty asphalt back roads and gravel access roads. Bike is fun. It sticks to curves like glue, power delivery is smoothe and predictable. I put a windscreen extension on mine and I have a good pocket to ride in at two lane speeds. It is so practical, cheap enough to beat on without so much guilt. It’s more fun to ride a small bike hard than it is to ride a big bike slow. I’ve noticed coming off my NX and getting on my Africa Twin the AT doesn’t feel that much bigger, but do that in reverse and the NX feels like small bike. My favorite feature of the NX, everything you need to maintain is under seat. No disassembly required for basic maintenance. I average 56 MPG that’s riding it pretty aggressively in the twisties, and thrashing on it in the dirt. If I had 3 hands I’d give it 3 thumbs up. Thanks for another great review.
As someone who has 84,000 miles on a first gen CB500X including extensive touring in the lower 48 and a few hundred miles on gravel, this is the most bang for the buck out there and the overwhelming majority of riders don't need to be suckered into anything more dramatic or extreme. Yes, it is an "adventure styled" street bike and no it is not for jumping 40 feet across a creek bed. It does a little bit of everything and it's not intended to be outstanding in any one category. I find that the people who take the most pot shots at it have never ridden one. Regarding the gearing, just leave it stock and let it scream 6500-7000 rpm across the Plains so that it's still snappy in the mountains and twisties. Who cares, it's a Honda and an under-stressed one at that. Great review, thanks Ian.
I’ve got a “pre-facelift” 2023 cb500x and it’s the quintessential do-everything “beginner” bike. My riding experience prior to this bike said I could graduate to a larger adv but not sure I would have wanted to. There’s times I wish I was on a strom 800, but it’s sooo forgiving. When I’m parking it in my garage or maneuvering a parking lot, or just doing the basic daily rider things we have to do, I’m glad I went with the smaller lighter choice. Don’t be afraid of this bike if you’re worried it’s not enough, it’ll still get up on one wheel and put a big fat grin on your face. If you’re contemplating a new Klr, look hard at this instead.
People get so caught up in the marketing hype of power figures, suspension travel etc that they disregard bikes like these and I actutblame UA-cam content makers for a lot of that. The CB/NX500 can potentially be the last bike an average rider buys if they’re honest with themselves about the kind of riding they’d do.
I was the opposite - took an NX500 out for a test ride but bought the V Strom 800RE instead as the V just seemed more planted and suspension was a heap better - the Honda was crashy for me with the rear shock. The Suzuki is so chilled having so much torque. To be fair, the V Strom was more a good bit more expensive though and is 10% heavier, so noticeable when moving around.
I also had the cb500x and it was the worse bike I have ever ridden , the motor felt dead , it had a very high center of gravity making it extremely unstable and it had 0 feedback from the oem tyres making cornering a nightmare. That was my personal experience I find it a jack of no trade and master of none aswell.
@@ProphetAndLossCould not agree more. I have a Strom 800 Tour and it is an amazing bike. Plenty of torque, excellent suspension and brakes, great ergos. After riding the 800, I sold 2 bikes, and will sell 2 more this Spring. If someone is looking for a "do anything" bike, skip the NX and grab a leftover 2024 Strom 800. For only a bit more cash, you get 3 times the machine.
I was watching NX500 videos on UA-cam as I am planning to buy this bike. I was missing your review, as I believe one review from you could summarize all others. I was a bit disappointed but consoled myself by watching your CB500X review. Today, you made my day! Nothing matches your honest and practical opinions, and the way you present them. For me, a motorcycle verdict truly means what Big Rock Moto says. Keep posting such honest information and continue to grow. Love from India.
We bought a NX500 last year trading our Tenere 700 for one when my dad got diagnosed with stage 3b/4 prostate cancer an the t7 was to much for him to handle the NX got him riding through his treatment, an it’s been amazing. When I bust my shoulder I thought I’d take it out a few times an I’ve been really impressed to the point I’m buying one myself, I’ve had all the big gsa’s and ex iom tt race bikes v4 500 2 stroke Yamahas and lots of old Nortons as an experienced rider it’s really impressed me we’ve owned most of its competitors, it’s nice with our speed cameras in the uk to be able to have an engine you feel like you are making the most off compared to the superbike level of performance on the latest big cc adventure bikes. We’ve really loved the simplicity of it and the on road handling is refreshing for us compared to the 21” front bikes” I think Honda have made a motorcycle for those of us that want a great on road travel bike with light gravel roads or trail n don’t wanna be the next Pol Tarres. Having had to reject 2x Ktms an 1x Enfield for major issues it’s nice to be back on some Japanese designed reliability. I love the lack of fly by wire to having ridden so many carb bikes with direct feel I’ve never been able to get into fly by wire bikes. We are gonna be taking ours to Norway next year can’t wait! We are just starting to change a few things on ours for the trip :) itl be interesting to see how they develop. Another epic review btw and all the best for the new year.
@ hi Sword thanks for taking the time to reply :) yep he’s really enjoying it, he’s had a gsxr750k9, ktm390 (rejected with issues) an a rd350lc in the past. But he’s really enjoying the nx500 so far I’ve just got back from another ride on it myself he absolutely loves it standard but there’s a few things I’d like to try, inc a different seat for him to maximise the comfort it’s a brilliant package for our sort of adventure travel though should be really exciting taking them through Norway. We actually had a look at the Transalps last week but decided to stick with the NX platform n take it in the direction we want build wise really excited to get the 2nd one when my 1150gsa has sold n start the process n do some compare and contrasting once I’ve bought the bits I’m thinking of :)
@ It’s good to hear your Dad is able to enjoy that bike. I’m at the stage in life where I realize how short our time here is. If we’re going to live, we’d better live big while we can. And nothing matters outside those we love, not money or possessions. It’s friendship and family. Enjoy every moment you get with him. Happy New Year from Kentucky.
@ 110% agree we’ve felt very lucky that he’s still able to n he’s super put the effort in following the exact instructions on food, n methods to exercise an it’s made a massive difference all the way through it’s really changed my perspective in life being on the journey with him through his treatment greetings from the uk n all the best for 2025 :)
Correct. I guess it would be perfect for 95 % of all GS riders. I also test rode this bike (out of curiosity) and it felt really good. I just felt a bit cramped with 183 cm. But if it fits and you have no need for too much speed..it's a superb bike.
I disagree. If you are unskilled at riding offroad, and you get a street bike dressed up as an adventure bike, you are probably going to crash as soon as you take it off the pavement due to heavy weight and lack of traction. A skilled rider can wrangle it, but a new rider is gonna get in trouble. And if you never actually plan to ride offroad, then you don't need an adventure bike at all. You can just buy any street bike you want.
Speaking of people being honest about themselves I see a lot of people use this logic to rationalize their own comfort level while riding a bike that’s not particularly good at anything. It’s kind of insinuating that most people are going to ride mostly on pavement in which case you might as well get a street bike. Having a highly capable motorcycle as an inexperienced rider doesn’t mean that person is dishonest with his or herself. Taken to another extreme I think if most people were honest with themselves they’d sell their motorcycle because they hardly ride it anyway.
Took my NX for several days touring the western Scottish Isles. Perfect tool for the job . Ive owned a GSA and Africa Twin. If i had the choice of those three for that trip, I'd still take the NX as i was able to take some litle tracks that i wouldnt have the confidence to take the larger bikes down. Most of us are not off road Gods.
Thanks for the review! I bought my NX500 around midsummer this year and put in some 8000 kilometers during 3-4 months. This mileage is the indication of me liking the bike a lot as there is zero commuting included, and most of the kilometers gathered through evening rides after work. I also took the bike to gravel quite often, and towards the end of the (short) summer (in Finland) gravel even dominated over the tarmac. I used the stock tires and they are maybe not the most ideal for this type of riding, but were good enough to get started. Rear tire is no pretty much done and I am planning to purchase some more knobby ones for next year. In terms of handling this bike is an improvement over my 2023 CB500X, even though I maybe liked the looks of 500X more. BMW F700GS was better for me in many areas, but it felt much more top-heavy than NX500, and prone to stall in low revs - which made me switch that to NX. Search for the perfect bike (for me) continues, but until that I'm happy with NX500 🙂
Im the proud owner of a 22CB5x. Ive owned LOTS of bikes. R1, Vmax, Ducati 748s, Triumph Triples, etc... No contest that this is my fav bike to date. Its economical, fun, looks great. 70 mpg in town? Yes. 80 mph all day on the interstate? Yes. Massive range?? Oh yeah. 250 miles easy. I love my CB5. Blacked out NX? Not so much. Looks like a watered down Ibex.. Im sure its great but, cmon Honda, give us paint options and gold anodized forks fercrisakes..😅
Dear manufacurers: give us an option for cruise control on every bike. Make it an optional extra, but feel free to charge an outrageous amount for it, if you still want to try to upsell to more premium bikes, or protect your profit margins. Like... $1000-2000 dollars extra if you'd like. I'd pay that. Some people want lightweight, smaller displacement bikes... Not because thats all they can afford, but because thats what they want. And many of these people want a few amenities, and would be willing to pay for them, alacarte. I'd personally choose the NX500 with cruise control over an Africa Twin, even if somebody else was buying it for me! Think about it guys, especially you, Honda. You cannot tell me that me giving you $9300 for this bike with one little added extra wouldn't make your accountants giddy.
I've had mine for about 4 months and am glad to see you finally review it. At 6' tall it is a bit cramped in the legs, seat concepts seat has all but fixed that for me now.
I did seat concepts rally with small bar risers and Knight Designs footpegs. I'm also 6'. Ergos are pretty decent with those 3 changes. A-twin is still more comfortable, though.
I just bought a 2018 500x as a comfy street bike for light touring and poorly maintained back roads and I absolutely love it. It's got plenty of power, but not enough to get me in too much trouble. The previous owner put a slip-on exhaust and it really sounds much better if the sound is a problem for you. It's a ton of fun and I am definitely considering getting a new one in the future with all of the upgrades that have been done to it.
Employee of the year is a good one. Edit* thanks to your review of the alpine star halo jacked I picked one up at the start of last year and it's proven to be a dream. Thanks for the review
I got this bike for my girlfriend as a new rider she loves it. Im guessing if it was for me I’d want cruise control, maybe ride by wire to have a quick shifter or dct option for a new rider. But I get it. Price point great bike.
I know from experience that big powerful bikes can be a real pain to hold at steady speeds w/o cruise. The 471cc Honda is way easier to ride at a steady speed and cruise while nice to have really isn't needed with the modest top gear grunt.
I agree I’m a new rider while I will be only ever used a clutch on dirt bikes when I was younger. A DCT would be nice of this had one I’d be 💯 on this bike
I've got the 2022 cb500x . I love it! Typical of Honda I am currently upgrading the suspension with Hyperpro components. I take it on forestry roads and double track type roads.
I got an NX and love it on road. It feels a bit heavy and honestly too nice for me to take off road and drop a bunch, so I got a 300l rally for that. So far, I'm very happy with the combo. Small criticism is that I could use more power when hill climbing 2 up, but that is about it. When I ride the bikes back to back I appreciate how nice the NX rides and when I'm in the dirt (as a noob) I'm glad I have a dedicated bike that I'm ready to drop.
I’ve had this bike for several months now, and I absolutely love it. I’ve been riding all over the Philippines, and it’s perfect for the slower speeds here. I’ve added most of the Honda accessories and even replaced the seat. The only issue I’m experiencing is a light front end when it’s fully loaded, but aside from that, I have no complaints.
I am 185cm tall and have been on the NX for 2000km. 20mm bar risors, 20mm lowered foot pegs, and a Black Widow muffler resolved all the standing issues you mentioned. I also have a T7, granted the NX wants to be kept in the optimal torque revs off road in contrast to the T7, but I really enjoy the NX for its ease of use, and off road with good tyre choice, it is not bad at all. Love the bike.
Nice to see you review the little NX. I liked the bike so much that I bought one right after the test ride. Making a pretty big "all in" build project with it during the winter 🙂
Hey Ian, I understand that you have to review the bikes as they come off the showroom floor, but that can then mean that it might be unfairly overlooked by some.. After all, don't we, and shouldn't we modify the bike to fit the size of the rider?? For example, I added ROX risers and dirt bike foot pegs and re-shaped the seat.. Now my NX500 fits me great and is good for standing up. For sound, I fitted an Arrow exhaust, and for better vibes, I fitted the 16 tooth front sprocket.. of course, there is a bash plate as well.. As a result, a lot of the criticism you have noted is gone for me. And probably for most of the viewers who may be considering this bike..I'll do an episode to cover exactly this topic. Keep up the good work, loyal subscriber and watcher.. Cheers from Australia. Ps we don't get Black here, ONLY white or red.
Age 65. Just sold 850lb H-D. I am looking at this bike now. It looks perfect for riding the back roads and forest service roads. Plus it’s a Honda! Won’t have to worry about expensive surprises!
the little Honda that could..for a new rider ..my quess.. after a year you would be looking at the TransAlp 750 thinking "I should have" I do own a Vstrom 650..the v-twin engine is at another level..thanks Ian..congrats
I loved my CB500X when I had it. I even kept it for quite a while after I bought my BMW. The only thing I didn’t like was the position of the footpegs. They made the seated position cramped even for my short legs (28”). And as you pointed out, they really aren’t good for standing. I replaced the stock pegs with a set from Knight’s Design that lowered them and moved them forward a good bit. Changed the whole feel of the bike for the better.
Glad to see the NX making a come back. My first motorcycle, back in '94 was a NX250. If they bring back the NX250 with the same or lighter weight as the original, I'd buy one. I loved that thing.
My first bike was a cbr500r which has the same engine. That 471cc twin is an amazing engine, and I could see it being amazing on a touring/adv bike. Obviously it doesn't look like it'll be the greatest bike offroad, but I'm sure that it's an incredible bike on the highway, gravel roads, and around town. Honda really does make fantastic bikes, and this engine in a sub 160kg adv bike would be incredible. If only...
Thanks so much for this great review. I have been riding this bike primarily on roads, haven’t had the confidence yet to go off road. Now Your review definitely adds some confidence to try out off road. I’m not too experienced on other bikes, but felt that standing up felt like actually getting onto the top floor.. and feels a little odd and not so comfortable.
I rode one for 3 weeks in the mountaind of northern Thailand Its no rocket ship But if we were more honest with ourselves we dont need rocket ships Great all rounder
I bought one to go around Norway TET last summer so I can give some long term review. I'm 5'8', at the time I'd had about a year of riding experience. I tried the Transalp and this. I loved the Transalp, but really felt the NX500 was the better choice for me. I think you summed it up perfectly by saying it's "Accessible". I did not feel intimdated by this bike at all. Yes, it doesn't excel at anthing but it's a good all rounder. If I could say what it does best, it's small twisty country roads. It's the perfect amount of power and agility to have fun. In fact it's extremely agile, it almost encourages you go into the corner harder. It's perfectly capable of gravel roads, although I did change the tyres to Dunlop Trailmax Raid. I do have criticisms though. The standing position, or rather the position of the exhaust, your heel will be resting on the exhaust and it's very annoying causing your feet to be unsymmetrical. You shouldn't underestimate this, In fact it's a game changer for me as far as standing up goes as I want to pursue more off-road activities. If you want to spend any amount of time standing up on gravel roads this will annoy you. Seating position. I really felt my knees aching for any long stretches of roads where you're just cruising for long periods. I think the bend is just a little too much. I spent a day on the German Autobahn at 135 KPH. Perfectly capable although at that speed it is screaming a bit. But it definitely had more in it if I wanted to overtake. I'd say not only is this the perfect beginner adventure bike, but potentially even the perfect beginner bike, but that's not to say more experienced rider's can't enjoy it.
Excellent review. Last year I was wanting a cb500x as my first bike after decades of not riding. I couldn’t find one anywhere near me so I went with a g310gs. My 310gs has suited me just fine and does everything I need but do think of upgrading and this would be a consideration. Just being two cylinders would be smoother and a little more power. I haven’t done any off-roading but I like the wind protection these bikes provide. Just a good solid dependable bike. Thanks for the review. Well done.
Great review. I had a test ride on one at the ABR festival in the UK. One of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden (after over 50 years in the game). On my ‘to get’ list..
I changed my old bike last spring (BMW R1200 RT, too heavy for me, I'm 70 now) and I bought this NX500. I'm very satisfied. I find it very easy to handle and extremely economical in consumption (with a full tank I do the same kilometers that I did with the RT, but the tank has 8 liters less!!). The riding position is comfortable, despite the strange position of the footrests. I have ridden about 8000 km and I am satisfied with the purchase, considering the weight (70 kg less) and the low cost. I hope to go a long way with it, at least as much as I did with the BMW (160000 km).
Thank you Ian for another well thought out objective motorcycle review. I especially like your reviews of the sport and adventure motorcycles in the light in the middle weight class. I own a motorcycle rider training school and get ask frequently, but I thought about certain bikes and models. Regrettably, I don’t know them all But when I’ve seen the reviews that you have done, I’m confident and comfortable referring riders to your channel.
My first street bike (been riding dirt bike for years) was a 2021 CB500X. Just this past spring I bought a 2024 V-Strom 1050. Am I pleased with the new Strom, yes in every way. Ergonomics, power comfort, etc. all fantastic, but it didn't make me dislike the 500X. I own both and I still prefer the 500X for commuting and short errands, while the big bike I use for day trips and touring. Every bike has its own enjoyable characteristics and the 500X is so light, nimble and easy to operate that I derive as much grinning from it as the Strom. Larger bikes are not more fun, they're just different.
I bought one of these recently and have been enjoying it. I got it because I wanted a bit of a jack of all trades bike that I could still use for commuting but also go on longer trips with, possibly camping and such out of state etc. It is fantastic in the city very nimble and maneuverable. and it is also great out on the open road or on twisty backroads. I have yet to really take it off road (waiting on some crash protection first) but its handling is pretty good on our poor condition country roads. I added a taller windscreen and Shad 3P luggage which is nice for traveling because it can be easily taken off and brought into a hotel or whatever. I slapped a usb charger and carpuride w502 unit on there for using android auto and it was great. Because this bike basically only comes in black, I did add some more reflectivity to it in the form of rim tape. a couple things I want and plan to do lower wider footpegs (even at 5'5" with a 31" inseam) the vibrations get to my knee. (partially due to an injury years ago so your mileage may vary) bar riser wide kickstand foot foglights maybe a more comfortable seat or maybe one of those inflatable seat cushions. Butt gets sore after a long day for sure. I also looked at a Vstrom650 but found it kinda bulky for what it was. Also, that dash is...ancient and it is still running halogen lights in 2024...It felt like they havent done anything to it in 10 years and I felt it would just be too big for the kind of use it normally gets when I am not traveling. overall I have been very happy with it and it has been fun making it my own.
A friend rode CX500/650 and figured that was the right amount of performance. They both had high mileage and shaft drive. He went with a K75 because that was the only 'small' shaft drive bike left in the market as a universal bike. I don't know what he'd choose now, but performance wise this is it. He covered a lot of gravel highway in the 200+k km on his bikes.
I used to have the CB-X and it was awesome. It might not be the best on its category, but for me, it was perfect to commute to work and from time to time ride on the tracks around my home. IMHO, not the best, but the most sensible.
Gratulation to crossing 300 k subscribers. Since 4 years I have previous model. Since that I see changes very positive. I live without them but usd-forks, double front disc brakes, better display and their control without moving hand out, traction control are impressive. Especially when everything goes without significant price rising. It's not the best motorcycle. Every motorcycle is some compromise between price, size, road- off-road ability, fuel consumption, range and so on. It's motorcycle for someone who look usable cheap, affordable motorcycle which is relatively lightweight, fuel efficient. Is not master of anything but masterfully balance earlier talked things. You don't get here emotions. Bike is not designed for long hours on highways with higher speed (biggest weak point for me). For normal everyday use, especially big city traffic filtering- for me It's swiss army knife under the bikes- universal and solid. For vacuum cleaner sound are plenty of solutions in aftermarket pieces- you know them- yoshimura, mivv and so on.
I was just visiting a guy with a full rally kit on his 500x and it looked really capable. He told me he took it anywhere and liked it because he wasn’t a very big guy.
Making it a “true adv” would’ve put it out of reach (price wise especially) for their target customers; it would’ve been too tall, too expensive for the average rider to take a chance on; the reason they’re so popular is because is mainly because its price, fuel economy, versatility and ease of riding.
Been riding an old KLR for the past year as my first bike. If I'm being honest with myself, its never gonna see more off-roading than a gravel driveway. Definitely looking into this as something a bit more nimble and city-focused but still with the ability to take some luggage on long trips and get the week's groceries home.
Added crash bars, barkbusters, radiator guard and offroad tyres to my CB500X. It's a blast off-road. It also did much better when I lost 10kg 😉, nice little free performance upgrade.
@@pieterrossouw8596 that 10kg weight loss is hardest way to lose bike weight. So much easier to take parts off. I need to shed some kg this winter myself. Congrats on weight loss.
Almost bought one last week. For the price it's a great package. For my kind of riding, mostly paved backroads, NX seems great. Feels very light compared to my old 2001 Africa Twin. Also pretty good for a tall rider. I ended up with a Transalp, but only because I got a great deal for an ex-demo one.
Thanks Ian for mentioning the fuel range of the bike. I noticed that MOST reviewers never even slightly or never mention about fuel range all just about power and power and very less contents about the practicality. Anyway I feel the CB500X/NX500 is the excellent travelling bike due to its excellent fuel range, and neutral relax ergonomics.
Fantastic review Ian. I saw your thumbnail, but hadn't cut my review of the NX500 together yet, so I didn't watch it until today, to avoid contaminating my thoughts. I can't believe how much we agreed on this one. We even used phrases that were identical in places (Freaky). My experience of the T.C was a bit different, but me and rider-aides are not friends. It is great to see I'm picking up the same qualities of a bike, as someone who's been doing the UA-cam thing for so much longer than me. I think we ride in a similar way (Although you are faster and more skilled in the dirt), and have the same expectations of what makes a good bike. On a less good note anyone who sees your review and then mine might think I just copied you LOL. Hope your year is going well. Hopefully, I'll get off my backside and put my Himi, 450MT, and NX compare together soon. CHEERS, CAM FROM NZ :)
I've got a 2020 cb500x which is essentially the same bike, give or take a few updates. I've never wanted any more power than this bike gives me. It really is a do everything well bike. I upgraded my suspension to rally raid level 2 & it's light years better, on & off road. It's never gonna be the ultimate offroader or the best tourer, but it'll do all of them pretty well. Honda reliability gives peace of mind for me also. If you like B road riding in Britain, then you'll absolutely fall in love with this bike😂 just to add to this, I'm pretty sure that i will never want any other bike as i love it soo much. However, If i win the lottery then I'll probably add to the fleet somewhat, but I'll never sell my 500x.
FINALY you talk about some else than BMW, my bike Honda NX 500 :) Thank you. The peg's i change to the SW Motec one it lover the pegs with abut 5 cm who helps alot when standing up also i put on a SW motec bar rizers so the stand up and driving is very easy and nice also the overal driving is better for the arms and legs, a superb bike for us who are 64 years :) I dowgraded from a Triump 900 Rally Pro and have never regret a bit! I love my NX 500! And some nice it have tubeless tires too who you not mention. The bike we can say is in the same segment is the Himalayan and the Cfmoto 450 MT and i hope you make a rewiew of the Cfmoto 450 MT too!👍👍 To the end i and my wife are driving on sunday trips with this bike all the time and we have a blast we love it both:) And for offroad we use our ATV a Cfmoto Cforce 1000 noting can be better!
Just a heads up, when you're doing really hard braking like that and the brakes are fading, you want to be sure not to just park the bike, go for a gentle ride to let the brakes cool off so they don't warp.
Thanks for the review Ian! I was considering this bike, but decided I needed a more off road capable bike so I bought the CFMOTO 450MT. Which even though I wont be going hard core off road the 450MT was the better option, for me.
I put a little clip on addition on mine that I ordered of Amazon, and it made a world of difference. It pretty much eliminates the wind buffeting on my helmet. For around $50 cad :)
Great review one of the best I have viewed thanks Ian. I have the 2019 cb500x and will probably make the right decision and trade in for this model as only do road and gravel I definitely don’t need more weight.
The biggest competitor for this in my mind is the 450MT. Since both are small twin cylinder adventure bikes that can comfortably cruise on a highway while still being light enough to easily take offroad, and generally having just enough performance for most things while remaining as light and agile as possible. They just have different focuses, with the 450MT being around 60-80% focused on offroad and the Honda being 80% focused on tarmac. Beginners who are interested in both aspect but don't really have a taste for which way lean will struggle to decide in my mind. Still it helps that both are great options at a very good price point.
That is on my shortlist. Had my fiftieth year in the saddle in 24, with my trusty old Vulcan that I`m about to exchange for something more comfortable to sit on all day. As I`m an older geezer my back does not like the Vulcan for more than maybe 250 kilometers per day and I`m soon retiring with ambitions for long road trips in the future. The VStrom is also on that same shortlist, together with a Honda NC750X. These are my top 3 candidates and the only offroad for me is an occasional gravel road. I`m in Europe (Sweden) and I`ve had several Hondas so one or the other is propably my final choice. The quality, and easy maintenance plus a very good dealer support make this a no-brainer, really. Only problem is my size, at 6,1 (184cm) that NX might be a little tiny for me. That is why I`ve also included the VStrom. This was a very good review, you covered the few questions I had about the NX.
Thank you again for this awesome review. It is a great size bike great for starting out or if you’re downsizing thank you. Looking forward to your next video.
this bike has the perfect ergonomics and "stearing" capability, it is really light enough to lift off the groung holding your hands on handlebars I like it, and I even ride it in moto-gymkhana competitions with some success 😅
Thank you for the video! Super useful. I am new rider and was unsure between the NX500 and the Transalp - I am keen to do on road and simple off roading
I had a 2013 CB500x. Loved it. I would consider buying a new one, however my issue with this bike is the price point- at nearly 8k that’s just too expensive. If Honda would price these 500cc bikes at around 6k, they would sell a lot more of them
Congrats on the award. Solid vote of ONE. Maybe two. Happy New Year. That's a very good motorcycle. Still a little big. Bargain. With the right tires I could ride just about anywhere I want to go. No centerstand. Needs some clutch cover and fairing protection. It is a smaller bike. Hell and Africa Twin's handlebars are shoulder high. Leg reach is a little tight looking. Put a set of Motoz tires on it hit the gravel. Has a motor you can use. Fun of a 500. I rode my old Yamaha XS500C (50 Yrs. ago) like that full speed shifts lock it up Hell ride the shit out of it. Heck we ran all over the mountains on Honda 305 Dreams, we called them Nightmares. Needs serious footpegs some AltRider's or equal. Aussies call the vacuums Brooms. Good review. All good from east KY USA Next time.
My '09 XR650L needs a digidash in 2025! Thanks Ian for another great review. The NX500 reminds me of my NC700X with less weight / more revs. NC700X was OK offroad up to a point after which metallic deformation of exhaust became an issue. Think if I was in the market for an affordable tarmac commuter the NC would be a great option. I'm stubbornly stuck on my sorted XR650L though so there is no hope of me progressing to like a 690. Anticipating your review of the 2025 XR650L that had a few mods for the new year.
The big advantage of the NX500 for an adventure bike it fits and is easy to handle if you are a smaller person. Picking up a bike off the ground Is a huge problem for us making it safer overall. Downsizing from bigger bikes has benefits too for older riders.
Ok, Ian, out of all the You tubers out there, I thinkI respect your reviews the most. So, I have to ask you, I’m on the waiting list for the new CF Moto 450 Ibex. Between the two, which would you buy with your money? And the hat and sunglasses make you look like your on NCIS now. Good look.
This bike will be very good but the V Strom 650 is a tried and tested classic. The V - engine is amazing and reliable. I have a feeling that the V-Strom 650 is still better than the new V-Strom 8OO, except for the chassis. 🍓
Funny that I've been looking into possibly purchasing this bike for the past few days. Then you drop a review video on it. Bummed that we only get black paint here in the US. How lame!
I’ve been looking at this bike before it even made it to the US. I was a little disappointed at first that the black was the only color choice. However, the white is available for 2025.
I had a 2020 CB500X. It was a fine bike just didn't really have the legs to be comfortable at high speed. It'll do it, but it's not happy about it. If I were in the market for something in this price range, I would go bigger. You can find vStrom 650's gently used all day on marketplace for less than a new Honda 500. And if I could swing the extra couple grand I think the new TransAlp or vStrom 800 is well worth the upgrade. At least in the US where you are inevitably going to have to do sustained high speed. A lot of people have this opinion that the Honda 500 is somehow a goldilocks zone and better than the bigger middleweight ADV bikes by virtue of being lighter. But it's just not true. It has very basic suspension that bottoms out easily and the next step up is not that much heavier. And when you are not picking up the bike, the weight difference isn't really that noticeable. The Honda 500's only exist as A2 compliant bikes, not as bikes that really make a ton of sense to buy otherwise IMO. I do have to say though, the NX500 has amazing looks and style, even the post facelift CB500X had great looks. If you are dead set on a Honda 500 and looking for luggage, go rackless soft luggage especially on a smaller bike like this. I mounted the Tusk Aluminum panniers to it with a custom setup that worked very well, but the drag those big boxes caused was very noticeable. My CB500X would top out at 84MPH on a level road because of that drag. Though I don't think they go a whole lot faster than that without them either lol.

I'm glad to hear you're having such a good time on it!
What is Cruising speed
Can you, please tell whether an air filter also under the seat?
@@yurii_manin Haha, exactly.
Air filter and battery are under seat plus fuse box is under the seat.
I have a honda grom. It can run 6500 to 7000 rpm all week without a whistle
I hear you, the lighter bikes are great for everyday riding.
Thanks for the kind words and support!
We bought a NX500 last year trading our Tenere 700 for one when my dad got diagnosed with stage 3b/4 prostate cancer an the t7 was to much for him to handle the NX got him riding through his treatment, an it’s been amazing.
When I bust my shoulder I thought I’d take it out a few times an I’ve been really impressed to the point I’m buying one myself,
I’ve had all the big gsa’s and ex iom tt race bikes v4 500 2 stroke Yamahas and lots of old Nortons as an experienced rider it’s really impressed me we’ve owned most of its competitors, it’s nice with our speed cameras in the uk to be able to have an engine you feel like you are making the most off compared to the superbike level of performance on the latest big cc adventure bikes.
Hope your Dad is still enjoying that bike. Tough diagnosis. Keep building memories. Good luck with your bike build and good journeying.
If a lot more people were honest about themselves, their skill level and what kind of riding they’d mostly be doing, this is the bike they would get.
Correct. I guess it would be perfect for 95 % of all GS riders.
I also test rode this bike (out of curiosity) and it felt really good. I just felt a bit cramped with 183 cm. But if it fits and you have no need for too much speed..it's a superb bike.
agreed
Nice bike ‘ nice price!
Search for the perfect bike (for me) continues, but until that I'm happy with NX500 🙂
thanks for sharing
It is a great bike!
Prefer the CB to the NX, which has a flat nose 😅
Hey , just completed 26000 kms on my NX 500. Loving it.
I've had mine for about 4 months and am glad to see you finally review it. At 6' tall it is a bit cramped in the legs, seat concepts seat has all but fixed that for me now.
Cool, got a link to that seat? Also 6ft with 34 inseam
Glad you found the jacket recommendation helpful!
I got this bike for my girlfriend as a new rider she loves it. Im guessing if it was for me I’d want cruise control, maybe ride by wire to have a quick shifter or dct option for a new rider. But I get it. Price point great bike.
Right on!
I take it on forestry roads and double track type roads.
awesome
Ian, your reviews are just getting better all the time. Really nice and structured:
I’m glad you’re having such a good time with the bike.
What issue did the Black widow resolve!if I may ask...
Greetings from Belgium
I was literally thinking about this last night if you'd do an NX500 review. Funny timing!
Ps we don't get Black here, ONLY white or red.
great mods, sound like a good set up
I got my 24 NX500 Nov 1st here in Calif. Have almost 700 miles on it. Been loving this bike.
Until we find out what Kawasaki has in store with the KLE coming, Honda sort of hits a niche with this bike that no one else quite matches.
I rode one for 3 weeks in the mountaind of northern Thailand
Its no rocket ship
But if we were more honest with ourselves we dont need rocket ships
Great all rounder
Well done.
Go .for the upgrade.
I did and it’s a big improvement
@ did you go from the 310gs?
@@MikeNoble yes.
Congratulations! employee of the year! I hope the next one is just as fruitful with many more varied and well earned accolades!
Regrettably, I don’t know them all But when I’ve seen the reviews that you have done, I’m confident and comfortable referring riders to your channel.
thanks
Because this bike basically only comes in black, I did add some more reflectivity to it in the form of rim tape.
a couple things I want and plan to do
lower wider footpegs (even at 5'5" with a 31" inseam) the vibrations get to my knee. (partially due to an injury years ago so your mileage may vary)
bar riser
wide kickstand foot
foglights
maybe a more comfortable seat or maybe one of those inflatable seat cushions. Butt gets sore after a long day for sure.
I also looked at a Vstrom650 but found it kinda bulky for what it was. Also, that dash is...ancient and it is still running halogen lights in 2024...It felt like they havent done anything to it in 10 years and I felt it would just be too big for the kind of use it normally gets when I am not traveling.
overall I have been very happy with it and it has been fun making it my own.
thanks for sharing
Ill always be fond the the cb500x/nx500. I just wish honda had made it a true adv. I had a fully rally raided 500x and it was impressive offroad.
It’s a great bike, but it would be interesting to see what they could do with some more off-road capability.
I was just visiting a guy with a full rally kit on his 500x and it looked really capable. He told me he took it anywhere and liked it because he wasn’t a very big guy.
Waiting for it years. Dont understand why they dont make it. Hope KLE500 show Honda what to do
Making it a “true adv” would’ve put it out of reach (price wise especially) for their target customers; it would’ve been too tall, too expensive for the average rider to take a chance on; the reason they’re so popular is because is mainly because its price, fuel economy, versatility and ease of riding.
I’ve been waiting for you to review this bike since it came since I’m planning on getting one in the spring.
Glad to be able to give you some info on it!
#Keto 👍
Almost bought one last week. For the price it's a great package. For my kind of riding, mostly paved backroads, NX seems great. Feels very light compared to my old 2001 Africa Twin. Also pretty good for a tall rider. I ended up with a Transalp, but only because I got a great deal for an ex-demo one.
Employee of the year! Congrats!!! Highly deserved!!! 😃😃😃 Oh, and, yeah, thanks for another great review! 😃
Stand still maneuvering is also brilliant.. Comparing my other bikes.. Bikes easy to control in traffic too😊
I've been waiting a whole year for this bike review. 👍
Thanks for watching, Cam, and glad we're on the same wavelength with this one!
Love that laugh in the beginning, Mr. employee of the year 😅
Thanks Ian for your really insightful review of the Honda NX 500. Really appreciate your professionalism as an excellent reviewer.
FINALY you talk about some else than BMW, my bike Honda NX 500 :) Thank you. The peg's i change to the SW Motec one it lover the pegs with abut 5 cm who helps alot when standing up also i put on a SW motec bar rizers so the stand up and driving is very easy and nice also the overal driving is better for the arms and legs, a superb bike for us who are 64 years :)
I dowgraded from a Triump 900 Rally Pro and have never regret a bit! I love my NX 500!
And some nice it have tubeless tires too who you not mention.
The bike we can say is in the same segment is the Himalayan and the Cfmoto 450 MT and i hope you make a rewiew of the Cfmoto 450 MT too!👍👍
To the end i and my wife are driving on sunday trips with this bike all the time and we have a blast we love it both:) And for offroad we use our ATV a Cfmoto Cforce 1000 noting can be better!
looking at those pegs and risers myself. You like them?
This is my dream bike. With the adventure pack, I think it looks so futuristic. I hope to get one used in a couple years when it drops in price.
Just a heads up, when you're doing really hard braking like that and the brakes are fading, you want to be sure not to just park the bike, go for a gentle ride to let the brakes cool off so they don't warp.
Employee of the year! Congratulations Ian :)
Thanks for the review Ian! I was considering this bike, but decided I needed a more off road capable bike so I bought the CFMOTO 450MT. Which even though I wont be going hard core off road the 450MT was the better option, for me.
"Employee of the year" - Congratulations! :)
I put a little clip on addition on mine that I ordered of Amazon, and it made a world of difference. It pretty much eliminates the wind buffeting on my helmet. For around $50 cad :)
ANOTHER outstanding review. Thank you so much.
Glad you liked it!
Great review one of the best I have viewed thanks Ian. I have the 2019 cb500x and will probably make the right decision and trade in for this model as only do road and gravel I definitely don’t need more weight.
Great review. Easy to see why you earned Employee of the Year.
Budget bike, budget experience. Enough for some. Reliable transportation.
Love this channel, keep up the fantastic work!
this bike has the perfect ergonomics and "stearing" capability, it is really light enough to lift off the groung holding your hands on handlebars
I like it, and I even ride it in moto-gymkhana competitions with some success 😅
That's awesome!
Thank you for the video! Super useful. I am new rider and was unsure between the NX500 and the Transalp - I am keen to do on road and simple off roading
Congratulations 🎉 Employee OTY!!!
I’m glad he got it 😂
Had that same engine in a 2022 cb 500f. I put 14000 miles on it and it ran flawlessly. I wish I kept it.
[6:12] "My trusty pine cone". Well, that's an idea hat never crossed my mind before! Happy New Year, Ian, for when it arrives ...
Anticipating your review of the 2025 XR650L that had a few mods for the new year.
nx500 the no bs motorbike really. probably my next bike
Been waiting for you to do this review. Thank You 👍
The big advantage of the NX500 for an adventure bike it fits and is easy to handle if you are a smaller person. Picking up a bike off the ground Is a huge problem for us making it safer overall. Downsizing from bigger bikes has benefits too for older riders.
With good offroad bias tires this bike is actually pretty good offroad, just dont hit bumps because of the low soft suspension.
hello Ian , thanks for al the great videos all in 2024 , happy new year to you are family in 2025 . Cheers Steve /Australia
Greta review, thanks Ian.
Great bike but to me, this is the biggest example of what could have been, but is not. Great video as always mate
Such a fun bike. Thanks for the fabulous review. I’m about to make a decision soon.
Still torn between this or the 450MT
Ok, Ian, out of all the You tubers out there, I thinkI respect your reviews the most. So, I have to ask you, I’m on the waiting list for the new CF Moto 450 Ibex. Between the two, which would you buy with your money?
And the hat and sunglasses make you look like your on NCIS now. Good look.
not sure the 450 ibex will make it to the usa, was supposed to be sept. of 2024 still not here 12-31-24.
Angry Vacuum Cleaner ! ❤😂
This bike will be very good but the V Strom 650 is a tried and tested classic. The V - engine is amazing and reliable. I have a feeling that the V-Strom 650 is still better than the new V-Strom 8OO, except for the chassis. 🍓
Hope you ready for Suzuki drz 4s.
Meet the new DRZ... same as the old DRZ
Meet the new DRZ skeptics, same as every other skeptic.
It is interesting that you mention the "engine sticking out" as a negative yet you seem to like the 1250 gs with the sideward protruding boxer engine.
Thank you for the metric conversion for all stats.
Funny that I've been looking into possibly purchasing this bike for the past few days. Then you drop a review video on it. Bummed that we only get black paint here in the US. How lame!
I'm glad the video was helpful! I wish it came in more colors too.
Ya Yes Amazing!!! i' Didn't Know about Update
2025 are white
I’ve been looking at this bike before it even made it to the US. I was a little disappointed at first that the black was the only color choice. However, the white is available for 2025.
Thanks for letting me know about the color change for next year. I like the white color on these bikes over the all black.
Congratulations on being named Employee of the Year! I assume this comes with perks, like a plaque and a cool parking spot?
pizza party
Ian, that phone incident just got the employee of the year free trip to Cuba revoked!
Looks awesome.. Lost me at traction control. Beautiful filming location!
Great review!
