How To Train Your Cat: Beginners Start Here

- I've made it easy to start training your cat with this beginner series. In the first part of this cat training tutorial, your cat will learn to follow a finger target. In the second part, you will use the finger target to guide your cat over a leg jump. Consider this a warm-up series that you can start even before you get your clicker training tools. Watch the end where I have my first session with a neighbourhood cat named Tego. When I'm training my cat Jones, I substitute the clicker for a verbal market, 'YES'. When I'm out with Tego, I'm making a clicking sound with my mouth. Both are fine for this easy tutorial, but when we work on more precise tricks, like high five, you will need your clicker training tools.

My cat LOVES Whiskas Temptations.
I use greenies for training because those are a bit better for cats to eat in bigger quantities.
@@emberpawthefox3626 I have the cat who made "finicky" seem like an understatement. She loves the Whiskas but when it comes to food, all she wants is to lick the gravy off of any wet food. She's bad but so blasted cute. I also think her previous owners must have been very abusive so I've been giving in to her which might not be right.

Do I need a clicker?
From her behavior, we thought our cat would be hard/impossible to train. But, this video worked like a charm, and now she reliably chases our finger.
i just wanted to thank you once again for these amazing videos. i've started training with my cat about a month and a half ago and she can follow finger, sit, fist bump and jump in an arm hoop in sequence for just one treat! every time i post a video of her on twitter it blows up! she is not a very cuddly cat so this is has been an enormous bonding experience for us that we hadnt even known was possible. thank you so much!

And then we have my cat, who is always actively searching for treats, even when there are none 😂 And when I accidentally drop one single treat, he comes sprinting towards it like it's life depends on it ... Even when he is in a completely different room lol

Um the The first trick my cat after a tree treats thrown on the ground he found a piece of fluff and he thought it was a treat and then he ate
Hahahhaha I have that problem when brushing my cats. I give them treats for it and sometimes they will try to eat the little fur balls I remove from the brush during it because they smell the treats on them 🤦🏻♀️
Tonight my car picked up in 5 mins how to sit and now he is sitting on command and also tonight he is going to a blanket and sitting...I might be biased but I think I have a very clever cat
Just tried this today and it worked so well. Adopted my adult cat a few months ago and she already knows the sit command, so I figure she’s trainable. She loved this, picked up on it super quickly, and purred the entire time!

I trained my girl to walk on leash jump on shoulder when instructed to get ready for car ride. Every place that had a drive thru she shook everyone's hand. She has alerted me to a seizure. She's better than any Fido I've met when it comes to protection. She recently had a litter of six. Noe time to baby train

I have found out my uncle has been punishing his cat for urinating the furniture by locking it in the cage and giving it a cold shower. He even starved the cat for a whole day just because it peed his bed sheets and I was worried and was about to call animal services on him and he shouldn’t be treating the cat like that it doesn’t know any better.

Yes, last time I walked inside the pet store, asked for the best food no cat can resist, and all they showed me was this shell with lots of stuff. Ended up buying the most expensive one, but my cat can never be fooled.
How does training work with multiple cats? I have trained them to understand that the click means food, but now they just all swarm me whenever I click (have 3)

Just did this separately with my 2 7month old kittens and they were great, first time training them .just did it for 2 mins each coz I know cats get more bored easily than dogs with training. They are both HIGHLY food motivated so it works well for them

So, I put little cat candy in front of cat, nothing happens. If I put closer, so she can easy get is, she eats. My cat is like a super cat with super powers, she knows every trick and is always 100 steps in front of me.

But what if later on u stoped giving them treats for doing that and they stop following your finger? Like you can’t keep giving them a reward forever or am I wrong🤷🏻♀️ I’m really not sure
You would replace the food with other rewards, usually praise and petting and things like that. Just other ways to let them know you are happy that they listened to you.
What age would be the best to start training them? I have a 3 month old kitten, and its almost impossible to get him to focus on the training because he's always either REALLY hyper (jumping and running around) or is soundly asleep 😅
The sooner you start setting a good pattern of behaviour, the better. When it's feeding time, try working with a bit of his food to get some attention.

First time kitten mom this is helpful. Mine (2.5month old ) keeps getting distracted. I had to use a bunch of treats to find out which one he likes. This has been super helpful. He does this or follows my finger of if I use the tube liquid treat so it’s. Little difficult but I have confidence that he’ll learn.
Can’t believe how fast my cat learned this. He loved it! Can’t wait to spend more time with him and teach him new tricks

I adopted my cat when he was already an adult and I think he has a trauma with the carrier and going to the vet. he gets very aggressive and it's really frustrating. i’ve always hated cats… bc i’m terrified of them. i can be around them and they always seek me out more than others and that’s fine. but deep down i’ve always been SO SCARED lol. To me they’re just too unpredictable & stupid (not to be mean)… however, i started living with my gf who owned a cat. he just passed away and I feel so terrible especially because i was the only one there with him. I’m thinking ab getting a cat to surprise them but I just wanna do as much research as possible because I want a well behaved kitty. I have a lot of experience w/ dog training and clicker training so now, really it’s just coming to the decision. i wouldn’t be considering a new one if it was natural causes, but our kitty was born w/ issues with his bladder and he wasn’t even 2 yet
That's great, but I want to teach a cat NOT to do something (jump on the counters, knock stuff off, tear up the furniture, pee on stuff). Got anything for that?
Sadly this does not work probs cuz my cats are wild I’ll try it later when the cats get use to me btw good advice :)

Great video. I'm wondering about the hissy-sounding "Yessss." Maybe I missed it somewhere, but why is that a good sound to use? I would have thought it was too scary, since hissing is usually a sign of aggression.
One of my cat(male) is getting trained using your videos. He is a food lover and very much interested in treats. However my other cat(female) isn't interested in any food apart from dry kibbles and creamy cat treat. But she doesn't work to get even that creamy treat. I am unable to motivate her to do anything. On the other hand my male cat is very lazy and stupid but it's easy to train him. My female cat is very playful and intelligent but I am unable to train her to do anything. Any suggestions?
Is there a chance my cat gets frustrated when training? I started today, and when she saw that I put her treats on the puzzle, she huffed 😅. She did a lot of the puzzles at the end, but I felt she was kind of over it. What can I do if this happens? Should I keep going? I don't speak english, so I'm sorry if this is hard to understand. My cat is really stubborn. And she did not want to follow my finger. Guess i Will have to do it when she is more hungry or something🤷♀️
How many sessions should I do this before moving on to a new training?
If your cat gets 5 repetitions in a row correctly, you can move on to the next step or lesson. When you start a new session, warm-up your cat with a quick review.

I have many Questions about cat training 1. can we train 8 month kittens using this method
2.we usually do not by cat food and not training cat food because in sri Lanka its a big cost for training cat food so cat we use one of there fevorite biscuits..
