so, UA-cam is just gonna show me a video of young Danny playing the drums like a madman and singing in French?? okay, I’m melting. you got me UA-cam, here’s my money.
@@MeteoXavier i think their point was more that this specific live version has a quality unlike the recorded demo :) both versions are very old but this one in particular has a nice quality to it
In case you didn't know, this is from an HBO show called "George Segal's Best Bets" from 1980. HBO erased the original tapes. Best fuckin' band ever. The centerpiece when they do the "Have you seen my baby" is amazing! Danny sings the lead and plays the tempo of their responses on his timbales!
BTW, I was at their original 'Whiskey-a-go-go' show in '78 when they were still called 'the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo' and Vatos was their drummer. I became (along with many others) one of their fanatical followers and saw all of their shows (in Southern Cal). About a year after their first Whiskey show, Vatos quit the band. Bartek told me that he needed to get a full-time job to support his family. He came back after they started to make money. It was a real blow when he left.
They played two songs in this performance from "George Segal's Best Bets" - the other was their AMAZING live performance of the Beach Boy's "California Girls", where he rewrites the lyrics to be about girls from other planets!! ua-cam.com/video/zLf0GDAsDSs/v-deo.html
Are you kidding me!!!!!!! AHHHH!!! Nothing is sexier than a young Danny singing in french and jumping all over the place with what looks like a nintendo gun attached to the side of his pants... OMG! i think im going to faint. ::Sigh:: i love you danny.....
OMGosh what an absolute TREAT! Love love love these guys. Growing up in southern CA in the 70's and 80's, I was such a huge fan. Danny Elfman was truly my first LOVE! Had his name written all over my VANS, haha
BTW, does anyone have a vid of the original version of 'Violent Love"? It had a sort of 'swing' tempo. Boingo later redid it to fit more into their new-wave style, but I've always liked the original more. Bartek told me that they were having trouble taking the next step because their music was all over the place and they needed to, have one 'sound' unique to them. During 'violent love', Elfman would grab a woman from the audience, go back stage, and then emerge zipping up his fly, grinning.
ua-cam.com/video/pyy_VYO2nYQ/v-deo.html Is this what you're looking for? Sadly this video doesn't have visuals, but the audio of him flirting with a woman named Linda in the audience is there
This has to be the best love song ever created I cannot listen to this like a normal person. I want to love someone so much that I go crazy for them n sing french
He apparently understands French much better than he speaks it. He gives interviews with French radio stations where they ask him the questions in French and he answers in English.
Where to begin? The outfits (only they can pull off looking that crazy), the French (oh, Danny...), how freakin' YOUNG they all are, the fun drumming...awesome. I've never heard this song before. I LIKE it. Again, much thanks for sharing this.
This is a great find! I was sitting in front of the TV watching this night time show, broadcast around the time Letterman came to late night. They were introduced by George Segal, if I remember correctly. My introduction to Oingo-Boingo. I was knocked out. I said, "They're tight! They're good!" Everyone else said, "Huh?"
OMG is that Danny on Steel pans? I can't tell for certain, but if so that would make me really happy as I am a proud West-Indian American :) Jeez these guys were soooo good. C'mon, Danny, get the guys back together and at least make another album...PLEASE?
And everyone was happy when he returned. Around then I got a job at Time/Life doing cold calls selling their book series, and some of the band was working there too, including Elfman, Dale, and, iirc, Leon. Dale gave me free tickets to their shows, which was nice. Those were exiting days. My other favorite band then/there was the "Kats'. Demi Moore was married to the lead singer, Freddie Moore (she was an incredibly beautiful 18 y/o). Thanks for the memories, 910dohead.
Could Danny be anymore adorable and sexy than he is in this vid?... Probably. All I know is it doesn't get better than Danny Elfman on stage jamming with boingo.
He still understands French and has even recently given an interview where the interviewer asked him questions in French, he answered in English though but you could tell he understood every word the interviewer said. He seems to understand French much better than he speaks it.
Yes he is. At first we thought it was a random power tool, and were making dirty fangirly jokes. Now that we see it's a gun...we can still make dirty fangirly jokes.
@910dohead Dood, The name they had before 'oingo boingo' was 'The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo'. Vatos was the original drummer, on all the very old footage. He left, for family reasons, but then he came back. I remember how bummed everyone was when he left. This was not at Madame Wongs. I went to all of Boingo's Wong's shows (and all their Whiskey shows except the first).
Was that the Whiskey? The stage looks too big, but the chairs, tables, and building structure looks right. Man, those were the day; Saturday night at the Whiskey, Madam Wongs, The Troubadour or some other place watching The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo! I wonder if they have that video they used to play at the end of all their shows on UA-cam somewhere?
@fbe2 I am very much aware of all of that. I am trying to make a point that this is not footage of the Mystic Knights and also does not take place in the late 70's. Johnny Vatos was also not a drummer for the Mystic Knights so this proves my point even more-so. Plus, somewhere online I have seen a TV Guide listing for this epsiode of having been shown in 1981.
They're all GREAT musicians, but the guy that kills me in the bassist Kerry Hatch! What the hell became of this guy? Anyone know? Can't find him anywhere on the net. What a monster of timing. Heeeeeellllloooooooo Kerry - you out there, dude????????
I can only hear little bits because he goes so fast, like Y'a que toi que j'aime... doucement... de quoi je parler... oh lala ... la raison even he english parts are a little hard to catch
This is Oingo Boingo footage and not of The Mystic Knights. Compare this to the Urgh! A Music War footage, which was shot in 1980. Notice how David Eagle plays drums on the Urgh footage and how Johnny Vatos is in this footage. That would put this performance of having taken place in 1981. The same year Eagle left and Vatos joined. It's also during the same time of the Madam Wong shows, which is when both of these songs were heavily played. Probably shortly before Only A Lad was recorded.
so, UA-cam is just gonna show me a video of young Danny playing the drums like a madman and singing in French?? okay, I’m melting. you got me UA-cam, here’s my money.
im only here because i looked it up
singing while playing the drums is already crazy, let alone singing in a language you don't know
And he had to learn it phonetically 😂
I absolutely love this version of Louise. It sounds so strangely nostalgic…
Well, it's 40+ years old by now, so it should sound nostalgic...

This is the second time you’ve mentioned you’ve talked to bartek, how many times did you meet him? Any cool stories?
I think you’re confusing Vatos with the drummer they had before him! Vatos was with the band until the very end

Wow, this is my favorite rare Boingo song and I had NO IDEA that video of a performance existed!
