I've driven 210 miles today and binge listened to your podcast from Episode 1 sorry only just picked up the podcast. Really good though I've still a lot to catch up on 😂

Interesting to hear your definition. I guess those are for street cars, and each tuning house probably makes those stages depending on the vehicle platform they support?
I’m mainly involved in the amateur motorsports crowd here in the US (“weekend warriors” in club racing, Rallycross and Autocross). Stage 1 is the “starter pack” to make your car safe and competitive on the track in the mostly-stock class. It’s things like a panel filter, louder exhaust (so you can hear your revs over other cars), brake pads and fluid, and a set of street/track tires around the level of the Pilot Sport 4S. You would also be expected to complete a safety checklist with things like a bolt check, boost and fluid leak checks, fire extinguisher install, etc.
Stage 2 would be optimization of your vehicle with mainly off-the-shelf parts. This is when you would switch to track-only consumables (brakes, fluids, tires) and move up to compete in the first levels of the “modified” classes.
Stage 3 would be when you get into custom fabrication for engine performance and aero parts, and upgrading the power-adder, building the engine internals, and/or doing an engine swap. That would have you competing in the highest levels of the modified classes.
Each stage would add an increasing amount of safety requirements and weight reduction for the vehicle, as well as driving education/license certifications for yourself.
After all that, if your pockets are deep enough, you graduate into either spec-racing classes or pro/am series (like GT3 for example).

Sorry Pete, I couldn't help but admire the Fenix 7 😃 I'll have to re-watch the podcast again to cover what I missed. Btw I did a Stage 1 on my Audi A5 190bhp to about 220bhp... which made a big difference & smoother progression, but always had the nagging in my mind about why I didn't inform my insurer. So I upgrade to a Quattro with another 50bhp 👌😃 and will not mod this. The next step is an RS5 ❤️
