That will never happen in Sri-Lanka. Because the society and the people of Sri Lanka are nothing like in Bangladesh. There is no Jamaat or an ideology to turn the country back to the stone age (to try to kill Hasina who took the country from poverty to reach India's per capita.. remarkable at every level). Mistakes happen, when the country is small it just gets magnified as there is no fall back like Indian states have. The real mark of the direction of the country is how they handle a crisis. India had it in 1990s when we had to ask IMF for loans. We learned our lesson, what this crisis showed Sri Lankan people understanding what happened and how to handle it. Which bode well for their future. Just compare Srilankan peoples response to the crisis with other every other country that faced something like what it did. most south american countries spiralled down the drain, destroying the currency, peoples savings as a result and the social fabric as a result. Look at Bangladesh, they are not even reached that point and look at how their people behaved attacking each other, taking out personal vendetta. Sri Lanka is following the same trajectory of handling it as India (after its crisis). People will realize just like Indians did that a Country's economy is no different than a personal finances. You cannot borrow money for internal infrastructure projects no matter the incentive. You cannot spend what you do not have. I hope they bring in a constitutional amendment to codify that into law that governs government borrowing limit. Force the projection to be published for the people to see and understand what freebies will lead to, and decide the pros and cons themselves.

He suffered defeats in the opposition under the Rajapaksas and LTTE. SL politics is convoluted and complicated. Hopefully, he doesn't face the same end as Hasina.
That will never happen in Sri-Lanka. Because the society and the people of Sri Lanka are nothing like in Bangladesh. There is no Jamaat or an ideology to turn the country back to the stone age (to try to kill Hasina who took the country from poverty to reach India's per capita.. remarkable at every level). Mistakes happen, when the country is small it just gets magnified as there is no fall back like Indian states have. The real mark of the direction of the country is how they handle a crisis. India had it in 1990s when we had to ask IMF for loans. We learned our lesson, what this crisis showed Sri Lankan people understanding what happened and how to handle it. Which bode well for their future.
Just compare Srilankan peoples response to the crisis with other every other country that faced something like what it did. most south american countries spiralled down the drain, destroying the currency, peoples savings as a result and the social fabric as a result. Look at Bangladesh, they are not even reached that point and look at how their people behaved attacking each other, taking out personal vendetta. Sri Lanka is following the same trajectory of handling it as India (after its crisis).
People will realize just like Indians did that a Country's economy is no different than a personal finances. You cannot borrow money for internal infrastructure projects no matter the incentive. You cannot spend what you do not have. I hope they bring in a constitutional amendment to codify that into law that governs government borrowing limit. Force the projection to be published for the people to see and understand what freebies will lead to, and decide the pros and cons themselves.
Non of the political parties willl go against our most reliable neighbour India who came to SL rescue when no other country did. Who ever is elected in a couple of day's, India will always be the top most friendly country to them.
We Sri Lankans have our own political views but India will always be our closest friend
