I wasn't either. Gavin mentioned that it's atypical to get a reprint in a commander deck so close to the regular release of a card but ... Gavin's right it fits in the deck so well!
@@JumboCommander I'm glad they added it! I'm hoping it can help normalize putting more solid reprints in the decks. Sure, it's recent, but boy, it's worth a few dollars. That shouldn't stop you from reprinting it in my opinion. Allosaurus Shepherd in the next Elf deck, c'mon, Wizards. You're doing well!
Do consider that while Herald's Horn is an "uncommon," throughout all of it's printings, that rarity status has not affected the amount of Herald's Horns opened due to the products it has been put into, so it being an uncommon has never affected it's price.
The best part of this imo is that they reprinted cards with more thematic art. I wish there was more than 3, but hopefully this is the new standard going forward as a ton of the artifact creatures in the "Buckle up" precon from Kamigawa could have been more thematic, I'm looking to play [insert deck theme] and have fun, I don't need a hyper competitive pre-con.
This deck seems so much stronger and more cohesive than the goad precon that was also revealed. This precon seems VERY solid, nothing crazy out of place, lots of good synergy. Very solid deck. Wish it had a wayfarer's bauble cause I think they should be printed in every non-green precon but at least one is in the poopy goad deck.
Ever since Zendikar Rising's Rogue precon deck, I've been wanting to make some sort of mill-themed Horror/Sea Creature tribal deck. Horrors seemed like a neat tribe, and much more on theme than Rogues. I went through so many different ideas; Wrexial (who might be a consideration for this deck), Araumi (yet again, tripling a Consuming Aberration seems like a barrel of laughs), etc. I eventually saw Umbris, Fear Manifest and thought I'd finally found it. Until I realized that Umbris got a little too big too fast, and the constant exile was better than strictly milling, but also a nonbo with the graveyard shenanigans I was hoping for (you'll have to exile graveyards eventually, yes, but I didn't want to be doing it ALL the time). I'd eventually put it all on the back burner, quietly observing the mill cards being released every set. Until finally CLB rolls around, and they announce literally the exact deck I've been hoping for all this time! This deck looks great, and even has some reprints of cards I've been wanting for other decks. I haven't even seen the others yet, but I'm definitely considering picking this one up.
This is one of the few pre cons i legit got excited about, really just this one and the adrix and nev deck. This one looks so legit and a ton of fun i can't wait to buy it and start playing
As someone who's favorite tribal types are Cats, Horrors, and Merfolk I gotta say I'm so psyched for this deck. Horrors will always be such an interesting archetype with how random and sometime just outright OP abilities they come with. I can't wait to get it. it'll give me a chance to try it out against my BU Zombie triple deck
I don't think it's intentional but there's GOTTA be another way to pronounce that name. "N'G" should probably be two separate phonemes separated by a a glottal stop or pause specifically to avoid this issue. Not gonna influence my purchasing or subscription decisions but a little forethought here could avoid some awkward convos in LGSs around the Anglosphere
I thought the same thing as soon as he said it... I've been pronouncing it /N/-guh-thrahd. That comes from a few years of reading Lovecraft and seeing those types of names pronounced all over lore videos. I'll stick to that way of saying it.
I haven't notice anyone mentioning it, but this deck does come with an infinite combo. It's Hullbreaker Horror with Sol Ring + Everflowing Chalice which generates infinite colorless mana. For a payoff, you can use Consuming Aberration to mill out your opponents. Since Consuming Aberration doesn't require you to spend mana, you could even do the combo with Sol Ring and any 2 drop mana rock. It's not an amazing combo as it requires 4 cards and the deck has no tutors, but against the other precons, it could be viable way to win.
1st time on your channel. Searched YT for this deck after I saw Starcity do the Dragon one. Gotta say very impressed on how detailed this was. Immediate fan right here. Keep up the great work.
I'm so glad I held off on Hullbreaker Horror. I was only 50% sure it would be in this deck. I bought Thing In The Ice immediately, because I didn't expect a double face card getting reprinted.
I love when wizards gets creative with the creature typings; Uchuulon has what might be the coolest subtype set I have ever seen, on top of a really cool effect. It’s a strong contender for my favorite card in my favorite one of the Baldur’s Gate precons. Good stuff!
First of this pre cons that I see, immediately in love. Probably picking this up as I don't have a Dimir deck at the moment and I love this theme. Let's see if I like any of the others better. Great video, as always.
Imagine Psionic Ritual with the second commander. Also, Brainstealer Dragon in dungeons and dragons could be an elder brain dragon (Fizban's treasury of Dragons). Uchuulon (Chuul reference, see Monster Manual), would also be fun with Zellix
I rarely ever pre-order a deck; But this one I do want. Partly to have a horror tribal, but I also want that amazing secondary commander for a deck of its own.
The deck isn't my personal playstyle, but wanted to commend both of you for explaining the deck so well and letting us share in your excitement for it. Loved seeing Gavin's enthusiasm and direction for this deck and thought it was really cool that he sought the horror themed reprints to contribute to the overall aesthetic. Well done!
I love the flavor of the deck and the reprints are on point, dunno if wrexial is here but it should be, it came on the previous set of commanders. The only problem I am noticing here is the lack of ramp vs the high mana spells, yeas I know I can steal rocks with commander but that's a possible turn 6 ramp, it looks like the amount of rocks on the deck is barely enough to bring commander 1-2 turns early but if he gets shut down most of your high cmc spells are going to be dead in your hand. Possible upgrade for the deck could be mass mill including yourself and more reanimation
Man, im so happy that i did not end up finishing my umbris deck before command legends B came out, saved a ton of money since 70% i was gonna buy were in this precon
Honestly, this seems like a really solid deck! I gotta say; some of the reprints for this deck are really nice too. Leyline of Anticipation (once very expensive; thanks for reprinting it in M20!), Reflections of Littjara (It got too expensive for me to buy alone!), Black Market (I have one, but I'll gladly take another!), Talisman of Dominance (please do this for *all* the Talismans in the cycle!), Herald's Horn (another tribal staple), it's not valuable but it's fun to see Plague Spitter, Chasm Skulker... and there are a bunch of fun cards here. I know that commander decks are supposed to be a little split in what they do and stuff, but I'm pretty happy with this deck. Looking forward to playing with it in two weeks' time! The one criticism I have is that I'd love to see some fetch lands, shock lands and pain lands, but it's been much worse before, and it's not really up to me how the decks are made and what cards are printed. All in all, it looks like a really solid design, Gavin! EDIT: Also, Hullbreaker Horror. Seriously, you guys are onto something here. I know it might just be because it's a horror and it fits well... but honestly, I like the attitude! I know commander decks are meant to be an introduction to the game, but I think the decks are getting better and have more 'snacks' for established or experienced players, and I'm glad they do. The cards tend to be worth more, and I know that's hush-hush, but it makes me feel better as a customer knowing I'm getting solid reprints (again; those tend to have value because they're good cards). EDIT 2: I love the flavor of Nihilith. It's not incredibly powerful, but it's a big baddie that's slowly approaching. And it works with the main commander. Super cool! I love that you guys put weird old-ish cards in when they're relevant!
Legit bought this for my sister just yesterday, and I'm so glad I got it and now I'm watching this video around in the morning so I can teach her how to play it when she gets home from school

This is by far my favorite precon of all times, hands down. My favorite commander has been Umbris, since its release, but now i want to build Zellix so bad! Gj Wizards
I think I’m turning into a dimir player! This is a horrifically good deck straight out the box and seems relatively easy to upgrade too. Me likey a lot…now off to bed with all the lights left on!
Dimir is best colors....building an Aurami deck and discovering all of the possibilities within that pairing is what made me fall in love with it. I've been wanting another Dimir deck to play, I think this will be it.
WOTC - well we have to raise the price for the con since we're making a lot of new designs! also WOTC- don't worry we "freed up" reprint slots by desiging less cards
The blue card from the court cycle (court of cunning?) is a no brainer inclusion. If you manage to reach your upkeep while holding onto the monarch you could mill an extra 30 cards, ripe for the reanimating.
I like that the mill aspect of Captain N'ghathrod is reanimator than strict mill. as mentioned in the video, it (usually) feels less bad to steal something from your opponents' graveyard than from their battlefield. that said, lots of decks care about graveyards so it fights on that axis which is neat. seems like a fun deck, and the reprints look pretty solid. no watery grave or fetid pools in the mana base, but river of tears, tainted isle, sunken hollow, darkwater catacombs, and choked estuary are solid. and not a guildgate to be found! the mana bases have definitely improved over the past few years.
I feel like you have to ramp with this deck. In my play group, someone will for sure hold up instant speed spot removal for turn 5. @@bend5963 building it too aggressive into the pump/exile mill strat meant I got targeted too early. I was thinking of gettig the white black precon for this set, because i have too many dimir decks... however! xDDDD man, the dimir club won't let me go
How I would upgrade the deck: - Ask R&D why the black/blue Liege isn't a horror like several of the others - Consider Call of the Nightwing - Consider Corpseweft - Consider Spoils of Blood - Consider Umbris, Fear Manifest (if we're going for our opponents' libraries, we might as well exile some of it too, swinging with a beefy horror). - Consider Despoiler of Souls - Seriously consider Fleshwrither (if you need, say, Ravenous Chupacabra) - Cross my fingers that we'll get more fun, awesome Horrors. Seriously, the Fleshwrither is weird. It's like Transmute, but you have to have the creature on the battlefield. Then you essentially Transmute it, but it enters the battlefield. Neat!
It seems like you could comfortably swap between the Captain Ngathrod and Umbris in command zone and 99 seamlessly depending on the kind of game you wanted to play.
brain stealer dragon looks cool but elder brain dragon exists in fizbans treasury of dragons which came out in october 2021. guess they had already designed the cards by then?
I need to see this deck list to see what I can take out and replace with Toxrill, the Corrosive, a slug HORROR that will passively kill things. Maybe a Lili of the dark realms could go in here? Cabal/Urborg combo?
I was thinking Aboleth Spawns works well with Yarok, the Desecrated, but the trigger on the Spawn might not actually count for Yarok's replacement effect...
From the catacombs is not great. 5 mana value means most turns it will be the only spell you cast. You have to get something that has a real impact on the board.
Pronunciation would be Nnn-gah-thraw-d with a drawn out N sound. The mindlfayer stuff was based off of Lovecraftian stuff which has it's language basis in welsh. Cause what you're saying sounds like N-word-throd.
Reprints in this deck are pretty good, I was not expecting Hullbreaker Horror at all.

I'm definitely picking this one up, mostly to upgrade Umbris. I'm oddly excited for the cards updated with the Phyrexian creature type.
Grell Philosopher + Mind Grind yeeeeet
If you had a way to give them haste and phenax it'd be infinite with that commander
brain stealer dragon looks cool but elder brain dragon exists in fizbans treasury of dragons which came out in october 2021. guess they had already designed the cards by then?
Really loved the pacing of this deck reveal. Awesome work as always DJ
Lets go nuts with zelix, mind crank, syr konrad and altar of the brood
Oh I was thinking the Brainstealer Dragon was based on the Elder Brain Dragon, I didn’t even know there was an original mind flayer dragon
There is the Elder Brain Dragon which would be a dope commander for a horror deck in itself
My Atraxa horror tribal deck getting new toys!!
Pronunciation would be Nnn-gah-thraw-d with a drawn out N sound. The mindlfayer stuff was based off of Lovecraftian stuff which has it's language basis in welsh. Cause what you're saying sounds like N-word-throd.
He is the designer...
ah, yes, that famous thing pirates say: "errrrrr" -- cmon DJ, put some energy and fun into your ARRRRRRR, matey

What would happen, if your opponent has a sword of ___? Can you equip all your horrors to one creature and get all the effects of the sword?
