They don't die off, they move in towards the dam. Everyone says they die off but the Guad actually has reproducing trout in it. The water is a lot colder than atmospheric temp, and out of the tall canyon dam it is much colder than that, hence why there's trout on this river and nowhere else.
Thanks for the info. Yeah many dont, some do that cant get into colder water. But I agree now that I live here and have for a while, I think I agree that they generally dont all die off. Ive caught a few actually in the heat of summer.
Hey McFly, I’m so glad you did that video on the Guadalupe River. That was my old stomping ground. You should try up near Gruene, TX which is north of San Antonio. I think that’s more of what you’re looking for. I’m now living in Colorado and fly fishing the heck out of the rivers and streams here. Great video.
My friend has been still catching big Stockerr trout off highway 306 near canyon lake. They recently released Brown this year so that’s also a slight opportunity. Try the bridge between riverside path and pecan st. (Google shanty tubes) Or the bridge just down the street near whitewater amphitheater (both these places are off highway 306) Those have deeper holes and have held trout all year
Thanks for the tips. Yeah I know there are still trout to be had, however at these temps, the fly shop said they are weak and might die if hooked. So I decided not to fish for them since I wasn’t keeping fish. I can imagine the water is cooler up by the dam also. It had to be about 80-90 degrees when I waded in down that way. Super hot water! Lol
yea the water by the dam is "cooler" lol but yes the trout this time of year are super stressed not only due to the temps, but water traffic. The river is a sh*t show of people on the weekends. Good luck out there! If you ever come back down here i can take you to some kayak spots where you can sight redfish in aransas pass. I don't fly fish personally but i enjoy the art behind tying flies.
I don't think they diie off, they are depleted by fisherman. At least that's how it was when I fished below Canyon Lake in the 90's. Stocking day, the banks were loaded with anglers for days.
Just a heads up on the trout in the Guad. They for sure are surviving year to year and they’re lunkers. The holdovers are savvy but they are there, in deeper cooler limestone cuts.
Thanks for the info. Yes they are. I ended up moving to San Antonio a year after making this video and have fished it a few times since. I have caught a few trout, one even in summer. Gotta be careful though as the hotter weather stresses them. Anyway, yeah I heard somewhere that they took a strain of rainbow that are more heartier for warmer weather.
Fish in order are channel catfish, longear sunfish, redbreast sunfish, bluegill, bluegill x redbreast hybrid, longear sunfish, green sunfish, redbreast sunfish, guadalupe bass (Not a largemouth), bluegill, largemouth bass, guadalupe bass (Not a smallmouth), redbreast sunfish, bluegill.
Hey man! If you wanna get into some good fishing hit San Marcos river. Also when they stock trout in canyon lake on the Guadalupe check out lazy L campground. I recently moved to Durango and been watching you videos. I’m from that area of texas and glad you are making vids down there !
We traded places here! Haha! I live down in Texas now. I do miss Durango a lot. How’s it going up that way? Yeah I’ve hit up the San Marcos and Guadalupe both. Good fishing for sure
@@McFlyAngler well central texas is great for fishing and close to the coast. I moved up here mid summer and honestly it seems slow still. The guys at duranglers said the animas lost some fish recently to wildfires
It is slow at times on the animas. Try a few smaller creeks with a 2-3wt fly rod. It’s fun casting to little brookies and having them come up for the dry fly. Small fish yes, but so fun. Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/lhHq4vGlBvo/v-deo.html I went to a small creek and fished, it’s not far from Durango. I’ve got quite a few videos of different small creeks in the area and I’ll say that it’s such a blast fishing them! Also just south of you is the San Juan river, which is amazing fishing and you should be able to catch there.
McFly Angler not there; but there is a place a bit further up in Comfort I have had amazing luck with! Boerne is a great place with some great people but that river has too much foot traffic for the bass and the good spots can't be reached due to private property. DM me @rockinadventures17 on Instagram for where to go in Comfort....its the best price free!
Sweet thanks! Yeah man, I had trouble finding large bass where ever I went. But I also was fishing smaller flies. When I go back I’ll bring a heavier rod for sure!
McFly Angler totally understand trying to pass off the rod at the airlines. We recently took a trip to Hawaii, and I was super worried my 8wt was going to get flagged due to size! Turned out great- no one cared, and I had an awesome time throwing to bones in Oahu! 6wt is the best for most Texas fishing, depending on where you go. 8wt will always be my all around favorite because I can throw to reds in the morning and bass in the afternoon!
Well the airline I took said specifically no fly rods, any fishing equipment automatically got a $75 surcharge. In fact they auto charged me on the way back because they made me open up the bag and said that the bag contained a fishing rod, and that had to go separate. Luckily I got charged the $75 only one way though and not two ways.
There are some deeper holes in the Guadalupe that will hold the trout year round. I've seen some pretty nice fish come out that definitely had to be there long enough to grow!
trout do hold over the summers in the guad, but they have a high chance of dying if you catch them in the summer so it's fully discouraged. Also that would be down stream of the dam in new braunfels. they aren't small mouth, look a bit like guads, but i think they were spots or hybirds
A few were guads. Yes I’m aware there are trout. All are stocked, luckily sometimes they hold over, very few. Don’t target them but sometimes it happens...
@@McFlyAngler not sure those were guads. it's a never ending struggle to ID them honestly. also they can be found in other rivers throughout the state as TPWD breeds them. there numbers were very low and as the state fish they put effort into making them more widespread for sport

Go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for an additional discount. Very good priced gear. Check out the ITB rod, it’s awesome! Also they have pretty good quality fly line there as well, and their armor reel is good quality for the money. Personally I love their gideon reel, and totally worth the cost, but it is a bit more than I’d recommend spending for a 1st setup. Let me know if you have any questions on any gear whether it’s risen gear or not. I’d be happy to help.
those are guadalupe bass. they have hybridized with smallmouth when texas parks and wildlife would stock them in the 60's so there is only a few places of pure strain guadalupe bass. which are in the blanco river above the narrows
Thank you, yes I’ve been told. Good to know now. Can’t wait till next time when I go to know if it’s Guadeloupe or not. I appreciate you guys all helping me.
Thanks for the cool video. One of the best days I ever had fly fishing was in an irrigation pond in Owens Valley that was loaded with bluegill. Hookups on just about every cast and just tons of fun. The warm water species can be an enjoyable diversion from trout hunting!
I fish the Guadalupe above the state park, been fishing the medina river alot lately, seems the fishing is alot better there, check out my last 5 or so videos all flyfishing the medina and loads of bass. I went a couple of days ago and just used spinning gear, the bass took my best streamers.
Another awesome video ! Tomorrow I'm going way up North to the Withlacoochee River, be there for a couple of days. Note: The definition of up North to a South Florida Native is anything North of the Tampa Bay Bridge.
I started fly fishing when I lived in San Marcos, TX. It is further north. The San Marcos river begins there at the university and has quite a bit of access through the whole town. Since it begins there, it is about the same cool temperature year round. Like swimming in winter. Great hand sized panfish, hybrid bass, and largemouth. I used beadchain flies and dries there. They are a blast right around 5-8 pm or in the morning. Lots of people float the river there though, so sometimes you have to cast around them. Love fishing there!!
McFly Angler no I haven’t. I haven’t been to Colorado since I started fly fishing. I started 12yrs ago in TX and we moved to TN. Since we have been in the SF Bay Area I haven’t fished much.
The biggest fish I have caught on a 3wt is actually a 6lb catfish from a small pond on a spillway. Had my rod bent into a upside down U. Sat the rod down and pulled the line in with my hands.
Haha! Wow that’s awesome! My biggest fish on a lightest rod was a 31” carp on a 5wt and ended up having to do the same at the end to finally land it. Fought it for 21 minutes. Really big fish on way too light of rods is kinda fun isn’t it?
Awesome man! I live here and fish here all the time! You massacred the spelling of the Guadalupe river. The Guadalupe bass can actually be caught all around the guad, medina? And rivers around San Antonio. Pink pookies are killer here. Big streamers that imitate trout can get big bites from massive 20 lb+ stripers in the winter since they eat trout. And sucker eggs and small streamer can catch trout in the wintry. It’s so cool to see you fish where I fish. It’s a great river in Texas. Especially for trout in the winter. The medina river is probably the best Fly fishing in Texas for bass and panfish, they stock trout in there I’ve just never fished for them there. And in the blanco river they stock trout that will eat anything.
Thanks for the info, yeah it’s not a bad little river, and very pretty! I’ll be checking it out next time I’m in town for sure! Btw, I have a large articulated rainbow trout tying tutorial coming out on video in about a month or so, if your interested. And as for the name, not sure “massacre” is the right term, I was off by one letter, an a vs e.... lol. I’ll change it.
McFly Angler yeah!😂 I was the one who massacred words and spelling in the comment. Awesome! I can’t wait for that vid to come out. But if you’re looking for hot dry fly action then go to medina river in the summer. There are lots of 5+ bass in there and in the San Marcos I caught a river record 2 pounder sunfish
I've been watching your recent posts and this popped up in my feed, which I clicked without looking at the date. I was like wait, you grew your beard back! Then I realized it must have been older cause there was no way you grew it out that quick lol.
Lol! Super beard growth. I do actually grow a beard quickly but no not overnight. I miss my beard but I can’t have one right now. Been having issues with psoriasis on my face and the beard just makes it worse. Oh well.
Good job on that catfish and the 3 wait. Looks like a pretty good tussle. Seems like we fly fisherman, no matter what # rod we have. We land those big fish that get on our little rods LOL
Yep, those were Guadelupe bass, which a three pounder would be a exceptional size. They aren't limited to just Guadelupe River, they are all over the place and pretty darn good eaters. During highwater years as well as low water years, the colder waters are beneath dams. The coldest I've fished in Texas, is just past the spillway of Mansfield Dam west of Austin, I can imagine, it might even be colder under the Canyon Lake spillway. Pity they don't stock trout below the Mansfield Dam, but they do under the Canyon, it might explain some of those bigger trout that are being caught on some the videos I've seen play on UA-cam. The trout might be able to survive for years, in the Guadalupe, either that or they stock big ones. Pray for rain, in Texas we need it bad, we are going on four years of drought, it really sucks. I caught a some golden yellow bass in the currents, behind rocks in the Blanco River, near Wimberley about thirty years ago, that were a lot of fun. I wonder if they still can be found.
Also, I am surprised you had an issue taking your rod. I have always taken my rod as a carryon and had no trouble. 3wt, 5-6, and 8. I just attach them to my backpack in the tube. I usually fly southwest.
We were not allowed any carry on without extra cost ($75 per piece). Had to put it in luggage. And we were allowed one luggage per ticket (kids didn’t count). So that’s 2 pieces to take, and they were taken up since we have kids. Sooooo I had to take my small 3wt since it was a 6pc and fit in my luggage.
I've had similar issues as McFly before. Called ahead a dozen times to ensure everything was ok, requested details about what was acceptable, details about what I had and how long it was, etc. Then I get to the check-in and they guy says my luggage is "protruding". No amount of clarification and specifics about regulations or who I've talked to would convince him. It really all comes down to who you get at the counter.
Hi, I always enjoy your down-to-earth videos! I'm a 1-year rookie to fly fishing and will probably start tying my own soon out of pocketbook self-defense, since I don't yet have waders to get me away from the backcast-eating brush monsters. :) I live across CO from you, up in Fort Collins. There are a few ponds I know up here where the bluegills can go over 10oz; fantastic fun on a 3wt and wet or dry (or both) flies. The big ones generally can't resist a shiny bead head nymph and usually beat the dinks to it. A small popper-and-dropper can even yield double hookups!
I live in fort Collins too, keep looking, I don't think the particular line is good but have caught bluegill upto 1 lb. Some pretty good bass too(3-4 lb). I have spent more of my time fishing for trout in the poudre.
Nice, yeah it’s crazy how they eat that. But I mean it makes sense, opportunistic feeders, they see something that looks like a bug coming along…. They will bite
What’s the set up you got going on in this video? I’m interested in a 3wt but don’t wanna drop a lot into another set up. Any suggestions??? Rod and reel plus line, if possible
McFly Angler Thank you for the info. The Redington are good rods I have a 8’6 5wt. Saw from a couple other videos of yours you sure like those reels from Amazon. My new 3wt will be ordered from Amazon. Another set to add to my arsenal. Hopefully we’ll see you on the Juan? Take care
Man there is no way that that water is too warm for trout that is some of the coldest water Texas has to offer I've never fly fished there but during the summer swimming in it I have seen rainbows in abundance and I've seen guys fly fishing down there in November and they can barely stand in the water.
Yes there are bows there, it was my first trip to the guad, I wasn’t aware. But still it’s not advised to fish for trout In the summer as it could put unneeded stress on the fish in the warmer weather.
Great video, you were fishing right in my stomping grounds and you actually did a really good job on spots you ended up at and the flies you fished. If I knew you had only a certain amount of time and couldn't drive far from SA and could only wet wade. Those spots would be on high the list of options.
I have not, would like to... was going to try and do it but time didn’t allow. Hill country is pretty! I lived in San Antonio for a while but I was more into saltwater fishing. I had just recently lived in corpus before that so I would head down and do redfish fishing when I could.
Thanks, honestly I was just very lucky. As a kid, my dad worked at a place that had a privately stocked bass pond in Florida. It had not been fished in for 10+ years and I was able to go and fish it with my dad. I was like 10 years old
Maybe now, if didn’t then. There is no parking at most spots really close to the bridges, but usually the signs have an arrow stating not to park from the sign to the bridge type thing. You should be able to find parking at most of the bridges. Sometimes it’s a bit of a walk though
McFly Angler yeah May is kind of the tail end of safe trout fishing. If perdnales falls has water that’s another good place to hit in that general area.
Nice video, I was wondering what location were you fishing at when your video is at 11:03 it looks nice. Was there a fee to access this location? I was Guadalupe State Park last week fishing with my wife, caught a few Blue gills before the crowd showed up and made way too much noise and racket. But if you could provide the location you were at would be appreciated.
Like I said in the video, I have no clue how to get back there sorry! I do know there is a marina close by. And yes it cost money to park, but no need to pay unless there is someone at the pay station.
Oh, so this camera comes with a hat clip, just basically clips onto your hat. No need for installation. Or you could buy a hat clip, I think I’ve found them for $5 and under on amazon. Make sure it fits the go pro connectors if you have them.
There we go! That’s why I thought it looked like a smallie! They can interbreed huh? People were telling me I caught 2 Guadeloupe bass but I kept thinking it was a smallmouth. Haha. They were probably hybrids
There are several different strains of bass in the guadalupe, they have been flooding the river with more guad bass hoping to drown out the small bass. I fished the medina and caught a 2 nice guadalupe bass and several small ones.
@@McFlyAngler yea i’ve been around san antonio fly fishing and i’ve gone by joshua springs in comfort and it’s a cool little area it’s a free park and a lot of area to fish

Your comment that a 3wt rod is meant for "small fish" is terribly inaccurate. I've caught numerous 20+ inch trout on my 3wt rod and it handles them just fine. A 3wt weight rod is primarily meant for throwing small flies...the size of the fish doesn't matter.

Nice! I will try it
I've been watching your recent posts and this popped up in my feed, which I clicked without looking at the date.
I look pretty? Lol. I mean thanks I guess??
Whatcha mean by weak wire?
Sorry about that my text-to-speech tweaked out. I was driving, so I couldn't proofread
lol i figured... lol
Yes I live here now. It was raining today but, it sure was super dry last year. Hopefully this year we get more rain
Hey thanks for the video I just started fly fishing myself. I love your style of editing.
Thanks! :)
Thanks Man.
Just got back from a small creek, where I had trees everywhere. Lost probably 20+ flies! Haha. I feel ya man!
I live in fort Collins too, keep looking, I don't think the particular line is good but have caught bluegill upto 1 lb. Some pretty good bass too(3-4 lb). I have spent more of my time fishing for trout in the poudre.
Gotta love that long distance release 😂 work on that bow and arrow cast in wooded shoreline. Rad video!
Thanks
Awesome video man! Keep up the good work 😁
Thanks!
I live in. Central Alabama and I off catch small catfish on a bully bluegill spider.
Nice, yeah it’s crazy how they eat that. But I mean it makes sense, opportunistic feeders, they see something that looks like a bug coming along…. They will bite
Nice work! Way more fun if you waded.
Yeah wading is a load of fun for sure
What’s the set up you got going on in this video? I’m interested in a 3wt but don’t wanna drop a lot into another set up. Any suggestions??? Rod and reel plus line, if possible
Rod: amzn.to/2MzYjXY
Reel: amzn.to/2SdUfSs
Line: amzn.to/2RUcsVW
BTW, this setup works much better for casting trout sized flies, not the larger streamers/poppers I was doing here.
Take care
Redington does make some excellent rods for a really good price
Glad you liked it. Yeah I need to go back some time.
I love that area of texas. One of my favorite places to fish there. Have you ever tried to fish the hill country creeks?
I have not, would like to... was going to try and do it but time didn’t allow. Hill country is pretty! I lived in San Antonio for a while but I was more into saltwater fishing. I had just recently lived in corpus before that so I would head down and do redfish fishing when I could.
Large mouth on a fly rod is awesome. Landed my first 4 pounder on a fly rod a few weeks ago.
Congrats! My largest ever was about 2lbs... on a fly that is. Conventional rig I got an 11lb bass once!
11 pounds on a bait caster is extremely impressive. Most people go their whole lives and never catch a double digit. Truly a fish of a lifetime.
Check out my forum post on that bass I caught. Picture provided. :)

Thanks, honestly I was just very lucky. As a kid, my dad worked at a place that had a privately stocked bass pond in Florida. It had not been fished in for 10+ years and I was able to go and fish it with my dad. I was like 10 years old
It definitely was not a skill thing. Ha ha
Very good bro.
Thanks
u shold bring ur opst line no back cast.. btw they got a new one the smooth line!!!
Yeah I totally didn’t think about that! Hahahahaha. Darn
Fish below the dam, that's where the trout are established year round.
Well, you don’t want to catch trout in the summer... it might kill them.
Man I could have taken you bass fishing... next time your in san Antonio get a hold of me look at my channel
Thanks!
Good spot fish my old stomping grounds
I wish I could still fish the spot, the road is closed now and I can’t get down
great video
Thanks!
I know where that first spot is at, but it's got a bunch of no parking signs all along the highway :/
Maybe now, if didn’t then. There is no parking at most spots really close to the bridges, but usually the signs have an arrow stating not to park from the sign to the bridge type thing. You should be able to find parking at most of the bridges. Sometimes it’s a bit of a walk though
I will have to look tonight.
Let me know what you think
well you are good at cathing bait
Yep! That I am. Check out some other videos of mine. God bless
Actually there are some trout that survive our summers that end up getting massive believe it or not
Yes, there are but the fly shop guys told me that the trout are weak and you might kill them if you hook them. So I didn’t fish for them.
McFly Angler yeah May is kind of the tail end of safe trout fishing. If perdnales falls has water that’s another good place to hit in that general area.
Yeah, that’s what I figured. I’ll check that spot out when I come back in the winter
Nice video, I was wondering what location were you fishing at when your video is at 11:03 it looks nice. Was there a fee to access this location? I was Guadalupe State Park last week
fishing with my wife, caught a few Blue gills before the crowd showed up and made way too much noise and racket. But if you could provide the location you were at would be appreciated.
Like I said in the video, I have no clue how to get back there sorry! I do know there is a marina close by. And yes it cost money to park, but no need to pay unless there is someone at the pay station.
Do you remember the name of the river?
Guadeloupe......
Hello, sorry for my English, I ask you if you can help me to install the camera on the cap
thanks greetings from Europe
Oh, so this camera comes with a hat clip, just basically clips onto your hat. No need for installation. Or you could buy a hat clip, I think I’ve found them for $5 and under on amazon. Make sure it fits the go pro connectors if you have them.
Anyone know where I can book a trip with this genius?
Somehow I am sure your being sarcastic but... I am not a guide, I don’t book trips.
what was the fly rod you were using?
amzn.to/2Bgo91n
Last fish was either a guad or guad/smallie hybrid
Yeah, man they look like smallmouth to me! Still learning! :). Haha
The Guadalupe is great in the winter. Here’s how it looks like with trouts and various other species ua-cam.com/video/DUMCUr5SxOE/v-deo.html
I catch catfish on the fly all the time
Yeah, I hear it’s a common occurrence in places where catfish are common. Of course where I live there really aren’t many catfish. Lol
Get a Hardy Demon Smuggler, you won't regret it.
Hardy makes a great rod, also an expensive rod. Lol!
That's a Guadalupe bass, they fight hard, and most of the time they hybrid with small mouth
I fished the medina and caught a 2 nice guadalupe bass and several small ones.
i was told that 'everything is bigger in texas ' guess the fish dont listen to that saying
There are some big fish here
No matter the size of the fish, I was taught a fish is a fish 🐟.
I agree
First bass I think was a guad
Thanks! Since posting this, I’ve been told the 1st and 3rd are Guadeloupe bass. Good to hear I got some! :)
Wow
Ok Owen Wilson
where was that second park located
Oh man good question. Lol! I’ve since tried to find it and can’t. This was like 4 years ago so…. Lol
@@McFlyAngler yea i’ve been around san antonio fly fishing and i’ve gone by joshua springs in comfort and it’s a cool little area it’s a free park and a lot of area to fish
Oh cool, where is Joshua springs? Comfort texas? Is that far from SA? How’s the fishing at that park?
@@McFlyAngler it’s probably 25 or 30 minutes from SA and because it’s been a little colder the fishing hasn’t been the best but during the summer there good bluegill and bass fishing
Cool ok I looked it up, just pass Bourne. Cool thanks! I’ll check the place out soon
You want to do the Guadalupe again just let me know, I'm about an hour from there, and I can loan you a 5wt, just bring your flies
I have gear for it, and I’ve fished it many times since. In fact just fished it last weekend. Caught a nice trout. Check out my other videos. Moved to San Antonio a year or so ago
No meet up??
Oh this was 3 weeks ago, and my wife had me scheduled every day. I didn’t know what day I could make it
Well I understand that lol save it for another day!
Lol. Yeah man! It’s just hard to schedule with my subscribers man.
Hey man huge fan. I live in the area of that shop. It’s called the tackle box. Next time your in sa I can put you on some fish!!!!
Thanks!
Your comment that a 3wt rod is meant for "small fish" is terribly inaccurate. I've caught numerous 20+ inch trout on my 3wt rod and it handles them just fine. A 3wt weight rod is primarily meant for throwing small flies...the size of the fish doesn't matter.
Yes your right, size of fish doesn’t matter to a degree. But size of fly does...
Those are Guadalupe bass
Yes, thank you
Learn the species, not blue gills.
👍
