    Cool days fishing! Great video… I lost count of the number of trout I caught on a #12 hares ear over the past 35 years back home in Wyoming… you catch just about any game or pan fish on them.
    Thank you for sharing!

    Excellent video! The sunfish you were catching were redbreast sunfish (Lepomis auritus), also called "yellow bellies" by some. They are not native to Texas creeks, but they still are a blast to catch! I love both your fly tying and fishing videos. Keep up the great work!

      I lost a massive sunfish on fly 4 years ago in a private pond. It's mouth was like a 50 cent piece wide open. I know the record is something crazy like 5 lbs but I've never seen one as big as the one I lost here in Florida.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 роки тому

      Yeah man it happens... when I was young, I was fishing a small pond. Don’t know what was in there, just visiting family and never fished there before. I hooked into something that just ripped line off the reel. Couldn’t stop it. (Conventional setup). Snapped me off and I never saw what it was. I was in a small kayak. And the rod and line were pretty heavy duty (not like a little trout rod). Soooo..... who knows. I was using a swim bait. So while it could have been a big catfish, I think it was a bass. Just crazy! It was in Pennsylvania....

    We are likely moving down there in a few months, I never realized how much incredible water there is to fish out there. You can literally trout fish, smallmouth/guadalupe bass fish, largemouth, and hit the gulf, all within like an hour and a half from your house...it's incredible!

    They are mostly bluegill and redbreast sunfish. I did not see a longear sunfish in this video. The bass at 6:35 is just a light coloured largemouth. I'm not an expert on spotted or Guadalupe but check the black line that runs along the fish, if it is a darker black than usual maybe its not a largemouth. Also if the top of the fish is a brown instead of the greenish colour that largemouth have. If the spots located above the black line are more defined it might not be a largemouth. The easiest way is to check for a toothy patch on the tongue but I'm not sure if that works for Guadalupe bass.

    Definitely not a long ear, long ear is my favorite species to target I just started fly fishing and I'm totally addicted my bass rods are in counseling. That looked to me like a female blue Gill they tend to be brighter on their undersides the lateral stripes on the back half kind of gave it away long ear sunfish look very tropical they have the green electrified spots on the front half of their body. Very glad I found your channel I have literally been in search of trophy blue Gill predominantly with my fly rod I just started fly fishing 2 months ago so far I have caught 13 different species of fish ranging from 11 pounds to the smallest bass I've ever seen keep the fly videos coming would love to see you target some crappie as well

    The second bass resembles a Guadalupe with the splotchy pattern on its sides and is a good sized one. How about the acrobatics of the 'Guad when you hooked it; which is why it's a delight for me to catch them.

    • @McFlyAngler

    Redbreast sunfish.
    Longear sunfish look similar, but those were redbreasts.
    Also, in a creek like that in the central Texas Hill Country most of those slender little bass are guads (Guadalupe bass). Although they are small, they tend to be much more athletic than a large mouth bass.

      Thank you, so glad you liked the video. I can’t mention online exactly where spots are as it’s not fair for the person who showed me the spot. What I can say is, most places in south texas where a road or highway goes over a spot of river are legal to enter the water from the road. Just obey the parking signs, and stay in or close to the water line so you aren’t legally on someone’s property.

      Check Google maps for places where roads cross, then go check them out. I’ve done that. Some are good some aren’t. Don’t go with your son at first since some spots can be too deep.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  2 роки тому +2

      I had someone show me. But not hard really. Find a river on your phones maps app, follow it till you find a bridge crossing. Go check out the crossing and most of the time there is parking near by. Then go wade up and down the river to see if there are good spots. That’s how I’ve been doing it

      Any public road that goes over a river is a place you can access the rivers. Most have parking available on the side of the road close enough to the river crossing. Or if you don’t want to get adventurous, then there are some state parks with pretty good fishing. Like the Guadalupe river state park.

I haven’t fished trout this year here. But I’d say with the cold temps that might be the only thing really going on

      Well texas law allows you to wade down river. No one owns the middle of the river. So as long as you don’t put feet on the land then it’s legal. Just find a bridge and park near it if legal to park, you can wade down into the river and then travel up and down. Now there are 3 rivers in texas I believe that actually you can’t do this legally. Of course be careful and don’t argue someone with a shotgun saying get off my land even if your right. Lol
