    Southern Hoppin' John Ingredients:
    1/2 lb. Thick Cut Bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
    15 oz. Black-Eyed Peas
    1 Red Bell Pepper, chopped
    2 Celery Ribs, chopped
    6 Green Onions, sliced
    1 cup uncooked Long-Grain Rice

    My Grandma. in Virgina, made homemade hoppin' John. As I recall, she put a ham hock in hers. It was so good.

    AB you found a recipe I forgot about. Growing up in south Louisiana there was a small restaurant called the Soul Kitchen that served that exact dish. Everything on the menu was beyond words and so was this dish.

    Me being white and from the south moved to west Texas where it's pretty much just Mexican culture, bagged a Mexican girl. I made a rendition of this that we've had in the family for some time now. Once every new years normally. Needless to say, I make this often now, they will not ever get tired of it.

    Yea, I do know about hoppin John from grandma, back country road of ga but this ain’t my grandma’s southern style hoppin John’s but it sho do look good and I’ll try it. ❤
    Also she makes her with red beans.
    The history is greens were for dollars and the peas(really are beans) where for the pennies( cents) Pennie’s are red

    Made a couple of changes. First used a yellow onion, and Creole Kick instead of Cayenne pepper. Follow the rest of the recipe and directions. My wife and I loved it, and a big thanks to you AB. God bless you and yours, and may God continue to be with you.

    But I've never remembered my mother fixing this dish Hopping John.
    But I have to go back and watch the video again. So when I do mine I know it's done right and a memory of it will awake from one of the family members that cooked many of dishes at the farm.

    Crispy bits on the bottom of the pot is called "fond". It adds so much flavour to the dish, no matter what you are cooking.
