I am a paramotor pilot from the Midlands with around 400 hours and have been living in France for the passed 13 months but cannot fly here due to different regulations which has been very frustrating as the weather has been much better than back home. I have recently been walking into town to use the public wifi so I can download your videos to watch back in the camper van on the TV and I think I have now watched all your videos from the very beginning, 4 years ago. Definatley my favourite UA-cam channel 😃 and I can't wait for more videos to be uploaded. Keep up the good work and many happy and safy take off and landings 👍🚁🛩

@@RoryOnAir I don't think I could pick a favourite if im honest as they are all good for different reasons but this video flying over London at night is nice as I've only ever seen it at night when I was flying on my flight X-Plane simulator back home and I do love the video with James, hearing his stories of flying to London via Cologne and his disappearing act on a night out. What a character 😂 Would be good to see him back in the cockpit for more stories 😄

Hi Rory, I started following you after I saw your recent video about completing initial training with Bristow Helicopters (I'm ex-Fleet Air Arm) so a lot of pals went there after leaving the Navy - but that was 30 years ago now! I'm sure you'll love working there. This video is fantastic Rory! What an experience for you and your wife!

Aww thanks John, you’re very kind. I’m delighted you enjoyed it. Such a privilege to be able to do it and take Lizi with me. Even instructor James was excited by the direct crossing of Heathrow.
Brilliant - what a great privilage!! Out of interest do you have helicopter night rating or instrument rating? ...or was this somehow flown with your instructor as PIC??
Yes, it was terrific. I have a night rating so legally I could do this trip by myself but Helicentre have a rule that we can’t do self fly hire at night due to the increased safety risk. I had an instructor with me so I log it as as pilot under tuition.
I been getting more and more into the idea of getting behind the cyclic again lately. Been a couple weeks and at first I wasn't even watching helicopter videos on UA-cam for a bit. Thanks for your support during this time Rory very much appreciate having someone to listen who has a little bit of experience. Great video as normal. Now for lockdown to end so I can do it.
Another great video Rory. Having seen your daytime trip it was good to see this night view, I even recognised a couple of my colleagues voices on the RT. It’s good to see how well the cameras do still work in low light. Well done. Great video.
Oh Rory, that was so good. I loved your daylight trip, with the normal route west of Heathrow, but this night time trip with the route across Heathrow was wonderful. Please congratulate Lizzie for her excellent photos. Not just a pretty face eh? I am so pleased that she was there to enjoy the experience, which so few people have had. I lived for 30 years under the Flight Path, 3 miles from the threshold of LHR 27R and spent many hours viewing the aircraft at Heathrow, so recognised all the landmarks you flew over, but I had never seen a video of Heathrow from the air at night. I have done it on the Microsoft Flight Simulator, but it didn't look as good as your reality. How on earth are you going to top that one, although whatever you do will be enjoyable. I couldn't see anywhere to buy you the usual coffee!!!
Thank you very much David. Lizi was pleased when I read your comment to her this morning. It sounds like you had some terrific spotting opportunities for many years! Hi Rory, great video and nice to see London in its night colours. All those dreams are being realised, well done. The controller cleared you to cross Heathrow and to hold at the spur, what is the spur? and can you explain that hold location please
Thanks Alan. It’s actually just a holding point called the airport spur to pilots. In reality it’s junction 4 of the M4 directly North of Heathrow. Thanks for watching.
If they can handle some of my really awful radio calls over the last year they can handle yours. I found practicing a lot before hand in your head before your trips helps a lot. So when I have a route picked out I'll practice all my expected radio calls, both ways. Your first couple lessons you're going to struggle since you just don't know what the return call is going to be, practice with a friend if you can.
@@RoryOnAir ...when I did my fixed wing night rating many years ago, I was told all night flying is done under IMC (because you can't see at night) - so I'm not sure if "VFR at night" is technically correct??....
You can see at night, but you just look for different things. There’s enough moonlight or light reflected off clouds from towns and cities to give you a horizon and you navigate from one lit town to the next usually (or use GPS). VFR at night is definitely a thing - it’s what we were doing during this flight! I wonder what may have changed since you did your rating. 👍
@@RoryOnAir Thanks Rory, really interesting - my rating is a brand spanking new NPPL(M) and the restrictions on that are half and hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, so the restriction I was thinking about must apply to the priviliges/restrictions of the NPPL(M) and not VFR rules - every day is a school day :)
