Without locking fuel tank caps, my advice would be fuel-up on your way OUT of the truck stop. There are guys that will see walk into the store/restaurant/showers and syphon off many gallons. They'll pull your fifth wheel as well.
@You Tube yup, they pull the kingpin release so when you drive off the trailer slips off, best case you provide a show of using the landing gear crank to lift that trailer back up (hope it's empty or only lightly loaded) which will take some time, more likely case you damage the landing gear and get to make a possibly job ending phone call. Other things they might do is unlock the hood latches and mess around with the air or electrical connectors. Depending on what company you work for the fuel tanks might have anti siphon inserts.

Absolutely love watching your videos. Although I only hold a class b cdl, when I pre trip the vehicle I check everything, but the one thing that grinds my gears are dirty mirrors and windshield. I take a few extra mins to clean those.
Your pre trip and post trip should take as long as it takes to check everything you need to check. There is no set time. But if dot sees you log 2 minutes for it they will know something is definitely wrong. Each company has different minimum times they want to see but dot just wants to see a reasonable amount time.
Watched my Hubby fuel so many times, but didn't know till this video that the Deff pump shuts off when you stop the diesel pump. Thanks Dave! I just got my CDL and about to go on the road for Prime Inc. ( Hubby works for a different company) eventually we will team together on our own Authority.
@@randomwatermelon1 Correctamundo. There might be some companies who don't, but for the most part if you're driving a rig for a company then they typically pay for your fuel through a fuel card with a certain amount of money available on it at a time. Driver's can call their company and have the amount extended if they need fuel and are low on their card, or some companies will reimburse the driver if they have to use their own money in an emergency. It's different through if you're an Owner/Operator(you own the truck and trailer and are considered your own company). If you're an owner/op you have to pay for your own fuel, and now we're getting into a whole different mess of paperwork to deal with haha. I've grown up around semi trucks, I've worked as a shop mechanic and roadside mechanic and spent more time than I can actually put into numbers around truck drivers. They will teach you a lot about life on the road if you're willing to listen, especially if they've got a lot of time on the road or in a semi in general.
A scottish trucker here just a quick question. What size are your fuel tanks and your def tank. And what sort of mileage do you get full to empty? Cheers
My Pete 379X had dual 150gal tanks. But it had a 550 Cat. It would pass anything but a fuel pump. Lol. Usually US trucks range from 90gal to 150gal depending on the truck and how the company specs it. My Pete got 6 mpg. My Volvo, with a 460 Volvo engine got 8+ mpg.

I love trucking and getting back out there soon, it takes a special sort to love it hell I’ve never liked a job like I do trucking and I’ve never had pride in any other job either. Be safe driver, enjoy the life maybe I’ll see you out there some time.
Putting your caps back on ,. Reminds of the time I picked up a tractor and the place has a fuel truck that tops off trucks every night and I just jumped in and headed back to our shop for the repairs for that truck . The fuel caps were left off, the truck had the same style tank cap behind the sleeper like that . Every time I tried to take off from a stop light I would loose traction and I was like " what the hell is wrong with this truck ?" I was thinking the whole time back to the shop that the clutch was slipping lol. Until I looked back as I was stopping and saw a huge amount of fuel slosh out covering the payment . Long story short . Check the truck before taking off in it . I had a hood flip open one time that was a shock .
Great info Dave! I wondered how the Love's app worked and now I know. Ignore the Super Truckers laughing at you doing your full pre trip. I think it is there for a reason, and you may notice parts wearing out and get it fixed in time with minimal break down time as opposed to not doing the full pre trip and the part breaking down in the middle of the George Washington Bridge during rush hour. Thanks for posting cool stuff. And I am glad you found a career that you are happy in - get your OTR experience now - because if / when you become a father, you will want to be home and get a local / regional job and you will have the experience to do so. @@dons8122 other way around. You'd want to pull on it to stop it from opening.
My advice, do a pre trip before you leave. Then a tug test, you'll never drop a trailer.
@@can_hauler Why would anyone do that? Especially to someone they don’t know...
Having the sunrise at the end of the video was pretty cool
Larry does full pre-trips! 👍👍
Dude I love that analogy you had for as to why truckers don't really get out and do all the old things that I would hear from older truckers like my Dad and Grandad, and as to why things are different. It's so true. Rn I'm a concrete mixer driver and I personally still cannot wait until the day I can get out there on the open road. I'm only 20 now, so Class B jobs are pretty much all I got, and I personally don't want to go OTR in a box truck y'know.
dave: always remember to put your caps back on, that one i'll do after my death
me: what
I think he said DEF
he definitely did but it's hard to unhear death 🤣
@@jacob.pavone yeah I thought so too at first, until I heard him talking about Def fluid...and I just knew there was no way he was talking about putting death fluid in his truck. Lol
You guys had me laughing out and my ex asked me what was so funny-so thanks for the laugh ❤️👍🌸🌲❄️
Dave was preaching the good word of trucking. Felt like he was speaking to me personally. I want to become a trucker but then so many truckers I’ve talked to have gotten divorced lmao. I’m not married but Hearing that like damn the job has it’s pros and cons like any job
BBQs at truck stops sound like a blast! Especially with all this covid mess. Sitting around a grill swapping stories sounds so nice. Keep hanging in there everyone! Stay distanced, stay safe, wash your +!;:!+*!* hands.
First time I’ve found refueling interesting 🤔 great video Dave
What’s Mahomes doing driving semis before the super bowl
Yes bro sounds just like him
Mahomes is the best
I'm a new trucker as well (okay, I only drive an M2 but still) and I had a theory that hanging the main nozzle shut off the secondary, but you confirmed it, so thanks!
Absolutely love watching your videos. Although I only hold a class b cdl, when I pre trip the vehicle I check everything, but the one thing that grinds my gears are dirty mirrors and windshield. I take a few extra mins to clean those.
Just bought the foam spray window cleaning and it’s the best I’ve used so far.
My favorite truck is a KW. I love your video's ! So so so much!
Me, a regular automobile user seeing the price it cost to fuel your rig up: 👁👄👁
@dragracing news 🥲 I just died inside
Only 210$? We pay 90$ for ~60l of gas (16gallons)
1000 liters is about 1000€ here in Romania so 10 trucks is about 10k
Pretty sure if you work for a company the company pays for the gas so its all good. I may be wrong tho
7:50 I wished you would have got some pics of that beautiful sunrise!
I do full inspections every time, idc who else dose what because I like to KNOW my truck and trailer is good to go. I love trucking and getting back out there soon, it takes a special sort to love it hell I’ve never liked a job like I do trucking and I’ve never had pride in any other job either. Be safe driver, enjoy the life maybe I’ll see you out there some time.
It’s just like fueling a car
Can you record some or what it's like to pull into a weight station? Even without sound or the first person POV
Yeah i'll do it again, there's one or two videos I've filmed it in before.
I love how honest you are 😂 you should defiantly make a videos on the pre trip.
Hey Dave when you use the paper towels to dry your windows and mirrors do you get streks. Just wondering.
No matter how many times I look at it, the thumbnail looks like a video game
Stay away from them recreational reptiles dave......😂
Great info Dave! I wondered how the Love's app worked and now I know. Ignore the Super Truckers laughing at you doing your full pre trip. I think it is there for a reason, and you may notice parts wearing out and get it fixed in time with minimal break down time as opposed to not doing the full pre trip and the part breaking down in the middle of the George Washington Bridge during rush hour. Thanks for posting cool stuff. And I am glad you found a career that you are happy in - get your OTR experience now - because if / when you become a father, you will want to be home and get a local / regional job and you will have the experience to do so. Enjoy your single life on the road while you can.
Great advice ❤️👍🌸
Ah man, I can't wait to start trucking this year! Any tips for someone who is about to turn 21 and going to go through CDL school in about 7ish months and any tips on trucking as a whole?
Study the hell out of the pretrip inspection.
Yeah study the pre trip there is a lot of things to remember I'm 18 and got my Class A CDL a few weeks ago.
So How did You do Johnathan?
Study and never stop
I'm about to embark on the journey of trucking. I'm doing it to get out of my stupid place of residence, I'm so excited for it. I'm shooting for owner operator with prime
Good luck! I'm excited to start sometime down the road!
why dont american trucking companies use the european-style trucks? They are way more efficient right?
Idk seems like the slab face would be less aerodynamic and then less efficient
@@ryanbcushman3504 they are less heavy tho and have different style motors.
@@rltcgf as far as I know it's just because our roads and industrial areas are not as tight so the trucks can be bigger to give truckers more room inside the truck. I could be completely wrong but that's what I was always told.
I think its because European roads are much tighter so the flat noses save space
@@randomwatermelon1 but why wouldn't american truck drivers want to drive in a less costly (more efficient) truck that is easier to manoeuvre and better for the environment
love your vids bro, you really motivate me to do trucking ! Just finish school with swift and got my license ! Just waiting until Jan 2 to meet with my mentor👏
👍❤️
You should do one pre trip videos for us beginners please?????
Your comments on the glory days of trucking are pretty much spot on! The drivers today (steering wheel holders) don’t care and it’s just a job to them. Make money for 5 years then disappear back to their country! 🤷🏻♂️ Sucks but true! Keep trucking Dave you got this! 👍🏼
There’s a WHOLE lot more to trucking than just holding a steering wheel-why do you wanna say such an ignorant ugly thing??? dbtrucker must mean dumb butt trucker
@@tmo.48 because I’ve been doing it for 30 years I think I know what I’m talking about. Unlike you troll!
Man you have to do all that work
all i have to do is press enter
(dont take this seriously i play Euro Truck Simulator 2)
You are the most funniest and entertaining trucker I know Dave. #takethatLarry
This man could of did a dot pre trip while he was saying that.

@@thedowner918 but doesn't the dot require you to do them?
Tf did u just say? Lmao

Going back to old DAVE! Loving it!
Does the fuel level between your tanks equalize? Like are there two fuel pickups, and you could accidents run one tank dry and the other is half full, or do they balance out over time?
I have the same question🤔
They balance over time
You should always be checking your truck!
My dream is to be a truck driver
Bad idea
Hahahahahahahaa
I had the same desire . Its all I ever really wanted to do for a profession and I think I got there too late 30 years ago . Hearing all the stories from the old timers back then missed all the outlaw trucking days . Oh well ... such is life.
Go back to sleep and dream something better
Don't listen to these guys, you do what you desire and make it the best you can.
Love your positive attitude all the time!! You sir, sure love your job!
Next video should be a tutorial on what to do when you’re locked out of your tractor at a truck stop in -10 degree weather with only flip flops and a tank top lol
That sounds sad😫
Always wanted to see the perspective of a us truck driver.. Thanks
Just saying to be a trucker u have to have your sit sitting on the ground
I’d still try to keep that brotherhood lol I did when I’d drive in my car that’s how I helped lost truckers or made a few tractor friends when they drove. Most now are retired.
You planning on buying a house??? Are those your plans? Would you ever want to be an owner operator?
What are you writing a book?
