- Tennis elbow is probably the most common cause of elbow pain in adults. You don’t have to be a tennis player to get it, though. In this video, I discuss what tennis elbow is, how a doctor tells if you have it, and how you can get over it.

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common cause of elbow pain on the outside of your elbow and forearm. Usually it develops over time rather than after a traumatic event. Typically, you notice pain just below the bony prominence on the outside of your elbow. You might notice pain with extending your wrist or turning your forearm so that your palm is facing up.
A majority of patients do not need surgery for tennis elbow. Often rest, ice and a short period where you avoid painful activities is enough to help you get over the pain. Sometimes wearing a counterforce strap just below your elbow when you do physical activities can help. Physical therapy can be very helpful too. Even injections, like a cortisone shot or PRP, has a role for some patients. Occasionally you might need surgery.
In this video, I discuss the diagnosis and treatment options for lateral epicondylitis. If you have elbow pain, watch it and decide if you should see a doctor for tennis elbow.

I've suffered myself and FINALLY healed with a combination of arm braces and a sling. I found not using it was the best thing for me. It took months and months to heal, and the thought of injuring it again is always on my mind. Why am I here today? I have a stubborn coworker whom I love and respect that is suffering and just progressively getting worse looking for information to share. Much love to whomever reads this thread♡
At 51 male I just got this about 3 weeks ago and it’s very painful especially when trying to pick things up. I hope it goes away soon
Thanks for the content homeboy. I got a gyroball and it fixed it right up (two weeks) in both elbows. Short learning curve to get the hang of it and burn in the forearms so I found that keeping the ball spinning and switching hands was the way to go.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION.
Great explanation of what it is and the several ways to treat it. I received one cortisone shot and it worked like magic, but unfortunately, the pain came back a few months later. Going to start PT and try that out. I really want to avoid surgery bc my doctor said it's a long recovery (at least 4 months).
Amazing I need more exercise videos
Well spoken
I work with my hands and play drums on my time. Pain has been steadily getting worse for a couple months. Pain radiates from the elbow to the hand with middle, ring and pinky fingers tingling. Dr. Appt in the morning
I have it in both elbows content pain, had injections 4 weeks ago and it's only getting worse ,going for MRI next week
Wearing compression sleeves or straping .
mine only hurts when i do pull ups, its like a numbing that runs down my arm mid way through my set.
I've just been using an elbow brace over my over my elbow and stuff but I'm still having I'm still having trouble with it I'll get that to see if that doesn't help but I'm going back to see my Ortho after my two more steps of therapy this week and hopefully I can ask him can we do something else besides the quarters old shot or tell me about whatever and go from there
I'm struggling with it right now for past couple weeks. It's horrible at times.
I recently took up guitar and developed pain (maybe tennis elbow?) in my upper forearm/elbow of my pick hand. thought if anything it would be in my fret hand but maybe its from holding the pick too tight while strumming/picking. There is a slight dull ache when at rest and shooting pain when I grab something like a water bottle. It doesn't actually hurt when I play guitar though
MY 'TENNIS ELBOW' IS actually very painful, as a bone-ee protrusion that seems to be excruciatingly painful with compression. do I need to see a doctor to confirm this diagnosis ??
I think I did it this summer mowing the lawn. I yanked the mower up a hill and it's hurt for 3 months now. I play guitar and that definitely makes it hurt.
is is advisable to stop playing tennis until it heals ? and while taking some time off from tennis do you advise to swim in the meantime. I am a very active person and sitting on the side would hit my mental well being, can i make that up in swimming. thats what i did when I had my back injury
My experience with cortisone shot after one and half months i come back with a bad situation my because of my work iam an electrical technician i move my hands and cry a lot heavyweight i just try ice course every day still the same
My elbow is like a size of golf ball .. is that tennis elbow ? I play a lot of volleyball and I think that is how I got it .. I been icing for whole week, the swollen goes down but when I play volleyball again it got swollen..
So what do I do for this ??
hello, i am a homoeopathic physician , and got a patient of tennis elbow few days back... gv medicine on the basis of totality of symptoms ... not come yet for follow up.
ur teaching is really good . thank you. hv a nc day.
can we continue our game after surgery??
So I play baseball. I've had this pain for atleast a year but it's only when I pitch. Normally I throw and afterwards my entire elbow and inner arm is in sharp shooting pain and arm won't stop shaking. 2 weekends ago I threw about 7 pitches and my arm had started shaking really bad and the pain made me tear up. Ever since then my elbow area and inner elbow area is in constant pain as soon as I straighten the arm. I'm 21 and my dad told me it's genetic and he got it around my age aswell. I went to a doctor and they felt my elbow and they said where I point out the pain it's definently tennis elbow so they sent me for sonars but they didn't notice anything. They recommended I go to a orthopedic surgeon to get a mri scan done but I have no idea if it's worth it or not and I'd like some advice on if I should and if the symptoms I've said is a sign something is wrong
I am using tennis elbow brace but not working.
Am having problem with my tennis elbow I have do shots and done the exercises didn’t work I had a MRI now I be going to see the dr what will be next
Just found out I had this
Im am suffering it now (19 Apr feel pain- 26 Apr gets GP Dr - 3rd & 10th May GP Dr & 17 May Specialist Dr) It gets so painful at night that i have to take arcoxia/ celebrex pill & cry like a baby…the specialist Dr says he might gave me a steriod shot but for now, its best for me to undergo series of phisiotheraphy: TENS, ultrasound, cold pack wrap & kinesiology tape..
I had pain for 1 year. I had 2 injections. It's effective but after 2 months pain comes back and I feel my arm is weaker.
I just had a surgery 2 weeks ago but I still can move my wrist much. What should I do? Or I should go to see the doctor again?
Had to get surgery on my right elbow now my left elbow hurts bad
The issue I am having it only hurts under my elbow when I squeeze my fist if I have my palm open I can lift but as soon as I start squeezing it hurts under my elbow sometimes it's a sharp pain sometimes it's just uncomfortable warm tingling feeling
This is called golfers elbow (inside). Its caused by grip and or flexion of the wrist. These muscles have been over used or they are to weak and need to be strengthened.
Tennis elbow (outside) is caused by extension of the wrist. Rest, ultrasound and very slow strengthening. This type of injury is often caused by overuse or poor technique.
How would a Compression Elbow Sleeve VS a Compression Arm Sleeve help for recovery? thank you.
Today I picked up a 3/4 " plywood and my elbow popped. I always carry stuff since I work in construction. Hurts when I push down and put pressure on it.
How’s it now?
Hi doctor, what if pain in the elbow has been around for two years...I’ve also got pain in my shoulder that flairs up when I do sports...
Hi Doc - I have been with tennis elbow for a months now, I tried physiotherapy and icing but the pain is till there! To be honestly I have not stopped lifting weight and this might be the reason! For the past few days the pain increases and started again putting ice every day. Should I continue with icing for the next few days to see what happens? Or is there any side effects for using ice?
Thanks

PRP was the win for me... Now it's my other elbow
It only hurts when I do push ups or any kind of workout. I guess whenever I bend the elbow. it stings and it's tough to workout. It comes around sometimes but not all the time but I dont like it because it interferes with my workout
Hey is the injury still there or have you recovered ?
@@userious2200 No it's still there. Its just isn't bad like it was when I lift weights
@@underrated7725
Are you able to workout regularly or is it hindering with ur regularity
@@userious2200 No. I'm working out regularly now. I don't know what it was. I guess it was just a phase or something but tendonitis is known to cause pain like that too

man this sucks. can’t straighten my arm , can’t reach for anything, hurts to get dressed especially putting a shirt on. i also noticed when i have a closed first my elbow or shoulder doesn’t hurt, if i open my hand like i’m giving someone a high five, the pain shoots to my elbow and lower bicep
OK now I have tennis elbow but before that I was having problems with my knees and I went to TJ to this thing that was on a podcast. Those guys took me over kept me overnight put rich plate, lid blood in my leg, then the area two months later brand new. I think it’s called stem cell not too sure.
hello sir.. my grandmother developed this condition due to knitting .. she use to knitt a lot.. and finally landed with tennis elbow.. it was to difficult for her to even fold her forearm then we tried planet ayurveda products and it made a diffrence in her condition now she is very healthy..
I was driving from California to Washington State with my left arm on the 7 o'clock position and now I can't straighten my arm and my elbow feels like it's an a vice and it's very painful. Is this what you're talking about?. Because I need my elbow. I set tile for a living. I cannot straighten my arm out.

I cant lift anything with my left arm due to this
All my life I seem to recall having short battles of tennis elbow, it'd usually come n go for about a month or so. Well, I recently got it again and it hasn't gone away after roughly 3 months. I think I keep reinjurying at night since I'm a frequent tosser in bed. Any suggestions?!?!?

Mine goes all the way up my arm into my neck!
I started working out my arms, and this shit hurts so badly i can't even eat 😫
I'm so sorry it's that bad. I can't sleep well because of the pain. Feels like my elbow is broken.
See a sports physio. I strongly recommend ultrasound. Avoid cortisone injections - after 3 dont do any more.
I recommend you look at your grip. Use a "weak" not a "death" grip. Use dumbells not a barbell. Put both arms out and make fists in both hands. You will see that your right hand and left hand are not in alignment. When you hold a barbell your hands are twisted outwards - elbow strain on the inside. Spend some time on yt looking for alternative exercises to what you are doing now. Look at the type of lat pull down bar you are using. Is this twisting your hands. Do not do behind the head anything - pullups, pulldowns, squats etc.
Be carefull of old school advice on weigth lifting. Some of the exercises lead to permanent injury. You have plenty of time to research this on yt. Take a hard look at technique. The first year of any lifting program should be technique only - light weights. Watch posture and neutral wrist alignment. Look at what you are doing when you are not training.
Be prepared to give up a year getting this right or suffer for life.

Go to any golf or tennis club, gym or walk up the street and ask anyone. Elbow pain is very common and most people struggle to get rid of it for decades. Ice, rest and a bit of massage only works for mild cases. If anyone doesnt like my advise they dont have to. Like I said get a first hand medical opinion and go from there. Other reasons for elbow pain can be nerve damage or onset of diabetes.
@@raymondmenz522 A YEARR !?? I rested for 4 months to let my elbow heal and now the pain is felt on my other elbow. Should I get ultrasound or an x ray done ? Thanks for the advice!

Is it bad that ive had tennis elbow for 3 years?
I’ve had my pain for around two years now I get pain in my shoulder also. The only thing doctors say is that I’ve got inflammation in my shoulder ontop of my shoulder blade. My elbow really hurts if I’ll be boxing and I’ve got my hands up and get hit on my glove I really feel that pain in my elbow. The pain in my shoulder comes allot after exercise
