I've had a life long interest in aviation yet i didn't know this aircraft ever exsisted until i saw this video, thankyou very much for posting this.
same here
Under wing engine nacelles (pods) look like a B-58 Hustler.
No delta wing. It's more like a baby Boeing 707.
Like a cross between a B58 and a 707 in miniature
probably as fuel efficient as a B58
Oh my if I was some kind of crazy rich guy I would so restore one of these its like a mini baby 707!
There is only one left in the world &’it might be in California..
@@anthonyhunt701 It resides on the ramp in El Paso, Texas.
Given that they only ever made ONE this film is as amazingly wonderful !
HAHA, Its like a little DC-8 even fitted with mini JT-8's.
ikr
I bet it was loud!!!
Yoy mean baby dc 8
Best looking private jet I have seen, I was never a fan of rear mounted jets. If this was redesigned for turbofans and modern avionics package, this would be a neat little aircraft.
Now all the Private jets have 2 engines near the tail
@@70MarYa not the Boeing BBJ line-up....
Yeah you're right
Don't forget the E-Jet series as well as the Airbus corp jet. To top all the uniqueness list, try the HondaJet.
Yes that was my first thought. We had the B-58 Hustlers at Grissom AFB in Peru Indiana in 68-69.
Great find! Love the mid-century "Space Age" nacelle design.
Using bleed air for a "blow-away" FOD preventer while taxiing? Brilliant!
Great plane (at first glance), but those rough fabric striped sofas GOTTA GO! :D
If anyone reads this, look up the last flying 737-200, flying out of dirt airstrips, it has cool rock deflectors
Probably had a higher fuel burn than a B737
Even 50 yrs later we still can't easily afford this old jet plane.
Many years ago, I had a tour of the inside of the McDonnell 220. It was based in Albuquerque, New Mexico and owned by Mr. Richard "Dick" Durrand. It had a mural of the Gemini Space Craft painted on the rear bulkhead.
McDonnell sold the aircraft for $1.00 to be scraped. Somehow(I do not know this story) Dick aquired the aircraft and a lengthy court battle followed. Deeply loved by Durrand, he wanted to save this from the scrap heap. After many attempts to register the aircraft and blocks by McDonnell and the FAA, Durrand sold the airplane to someone in El Paso, Texas where the airplane resides today. There is a video on UA-cam that confirms this.
Mr. Durrand was a businessman with a deep love of aviation. That should never be forgotten, nor should this glorious aircraft. I hope it can be perserved for all history.
Why in God's name would McDonnell aircraft want to destroy their one and only aircraft business jet?
It just doesn't make sense. I sincerely hope somebody. Somebody puts the money and time into restoring it. Then flying, it airshows as an important piece of aviation history! The 220 is a beautiful plane !
. @@turkey0165 The aircraft was a bid for a Government contract with Lockheed (Jet Star) The Government chose Lockheed and the 220 became surplus.. An Albuquerque Businessman purchased the airplane. It became a lawsuit later when he wanted to fly and then sell the airplane. This pissed the lawyers at M.D. He sold the airplane several times WITH THE KNOWLEDGE that the airplane could not be flown with other than a ferry permit. It is an amazing airplane,; So was the owner that added to the 220 history. The airplane resides on the ramp at El Paso, Texas. I'm glad I got to experience it in person.
4 engines on small jet then ,now two on big ones even. Thats turbofans
There is something romantic about these old promo films, I love them!
WOW! Never heard of this small jet! Great video.
I remember seeing this aircraft at the Albuquerque Sunport in the early 70s. I would ride my bike to the southside of the airport where this aircraft was parked with a couple other aircraft. It was one cool looking aircraft the 220.
That infomercial was so good, I want one.
its a baby dc8 aawwhh!
Is that Pussy Galore´s bizjet? :D
PG actually "Flew" a Lockheed Jetstar...you were close!
Too bad this plane never made it to the market place! It looks very safe like a miniture 707
2:53 Ooooh! They burned the DH Comet there! 😂
Thank you for sharing this video.
I have been wanting to build a model of this plane since I first saw it in a documentary many years ago. Never found much documentation on it. I would love to go see it sometime. It sure is one beautiful airplane.
This has to be the rarest footage of the 220 ever. I've seen ramp photos, but never action shots of this beauty making contrails. The addition of the interior and it's different configurations was a real plus. Thanks for posting this amazing airplane that never went into service.
As of December 2020, the only manufactured aircraft, tail number N4AZ is still parked on the ramp at the El Paso International Airport on the Southeast end of the T hangars. You must have a ramp pass to enter the gates to drive onto the field to see it, so it helps to know a pilot based on the field. It’s clearly visible on Google Earth. The continuous, harsh sun is fading the paint and a look into the engine nacelles reveals a lot of dirt and debris blown in over the decades. Sad. The external workmanship of the airframe still looks great.
I'm sold. Where do I get one?
El Paso, bring your tools.
Great video. I knew nothing of this aircraft until I was walking around the perimeter of El Paso airport and spotted it parked up with some other old aircraft. WTF is how they describe it nowadays! This was November 2015. There is a NASA guppy at El Paso. Interesting airport.
Thanks so much for the excellent bit of aviation history. A great find.
What a lovely aircraft.
I last saw the MD220 in El Paso in 1988 as it was being towed back into its hangar from the wash rack. It looked exactly like it does in the video... I had never seen it or heard of it before - what a double take! One of the techs there was nice enough to give me a little background on it. Very interesting and thanks.
Must of belonged to King Ranch.
Nice looking plane, looks like a mini 707 :)
super expensive toy 53 yrs ago! much like the Gulf Stream g5 today!
Wow!..😳
I saw this plane back around 1997-98 in a hangar at Midland International Airport in Midland, Tx. I always thought it was a cool aircraft. My brother who worked at Cutter Aviation said it was one of a kind.
this bird is truly a beauty!
Sadly, the 990 and 220 in El Paso have become derelics at this this point, if they are even still there in one piece. Only a very rich aviation minded philanthropist with a million or two to spare could get them flying again. A lessor amount could make them museum worthy if a group of people could raise the funds.
I'm sure it would cost far more than 2 million. The replacement engines would cost that much if not more.
I was thinking the same for the certs and modern avionics.. 20 mil plus I bet.
$20m was the orig budget for the entire program back in the day! how times change.
I always liked the lines of the 220, very interesting aircraft.
Thanks for this great and rare video. When I was flying out of ABQ in the early 80's I always admired this plane parked on the SW ramp of the Sunport. One day after parking a company plane in that area I decided to walk over and take a closer look. Finally decided to look inside and was amazed to see a beautiful mural of a Mercury space capsule entering the Earth's atmosphere on that back wall. Since the plane and spacecraft were both built by MD I figured it must have been a company aircraft at one time? I always wanted that mural.
Sonny Burnett, only that one unit was built. McDonnell (still years before merging with Douglas) tried to sell it as an executive jet, but there was not a single order, making it the worst commercial failure ever in aviation. The last it was heard of, it was abandoned at the Rust Corner of El Paso Airport.
Goytá F. Villela Jr.
I wonder why? Lack of range, maintenance cost, fuel consumption, market saturation hardly that as there were few PJs around that time.
Great video. I knew nothing of this aircraft until I was walking around the perimeter of El Paso airport and spotted it parked up with some other old aircraft. WTF is how they describe it nowadays! This was November 2015. There is a NASA guppy at El Paso. Interesting airport.
I have followed aviation since I was a boy, yet have never heard of this airplane until now. Thank you!
now that the 990 is scrapped we need to save this unique airplane Pima air museum was interested but the owner was making wierd proposals ElPaso owns it now and they are clueless of historical significance of these airplanes call pima and elpaso SAVE THIS PLANE
Plane probably designed around 1960's?
The 220 was built for one thing, speed, fuel efficiency not important at that time.
If you're lucky enough, you can see this prototype at the El Paso International Airport (ELP). It's owned by David Tokoph, who owes the airport a lot of money. As a consequence, it's been grounded there.
I remember coming across this once while looking for planes to add for Flight Simulator. I downloaded it, and I have to saw, I loved how it flew and looked (also had the same exact reaction about it being a baby 880). A huge same this didn't go forward, it seemed VERY well built and extremely advanced for it's time. Let's hope that the one that was built will get a very good loving home and so future generations can enjoy her.
It's like a pygmy 707, it's so cute!
The good ole days!
That thing would rip along
Another plane I never heard of good job
PS: Noticed the restroom had a 120V receptacle, a big dollar option even today.
And when you see the stereotypical SLENDER secretary, in a lovely PENCIL skirt, well, is it any wonder peeps are mega-nostalgic for the Eisenhower Era? :D
I actually got to see this airframe at the Albuquerque Airport in 1972. I always wondered what happened to it...
Oh Man!! I would take this little 220 over why corporate jet today even be new Gufstream. This would like having your very own baby 707, one of u so time favorite airliners of all.time!!
I would think that ANY new owner could find a new set of Utra efficient engines that give the times of better fuel economy white returning many times the thrust of the older engines. Then you get that super cool retro look with cutting edge preformance!! Can not best that at tall!!!
The last time I saw this aircraft it was parked on the ramp at KELP Don't know where it is now :-(
I want a 220 but a 5ft. Ext. Forward of the leading edge and a 5ft. Ext. Aft of the trailing edge of the wing! Plus four modern turbojets!
its a bit like that Kawasaki P 1 , used by japanese air force .
Approximately 135999 more people viewed this video than McDonnell built this plane.
I have always thought this was a cool airplane. I love all the early 1960s blue tints, especially in the cabin shots (the first time I have ever seen the interior of the 220).
If the merger with Douglas had happened a few years earlier, boom: you have your first regional jet for very small, 2nd tiet city air terminals!
Haha, so cute. Baby-8´er. :)
Wow 4 engines for a business jet 😊
I Love it, just like the Lockheed Jet-Star!
I wouldn't want to pay for four engines, that's for sure. Could add millions to the cost of building it nowadays.
Convair Hustler for execs lol
The thumbnail makes it look like a tiny b58
Yep.
I was on the flight from MAF to ELP in 1997 as an observer. Captain was David Tokoph, First Officer was Reza Sharifzadeh (sorry about the butchered spelling, Reza...). No video of the flight, but I have some footage of the prep work on the airplane in the two weeks leading up to the flight. Will post it once it is in a more usable format.
I’d love to see that.
Why did they ferry it to El Paso?
The A220 looks similar except for the number of engines
Very nice. What a beautiful aircraft. Thank you very much for posting this.
McDonnell mini dc 8.
I think this was supposed to be the original dc9 when they made it from what I read on it
Thanks for sharing. I thought I knew most jets, but not this one.
I thought it was a mini B707 and thx 4 posting !
Back in the 1970's I used to have the Jane's Commercial Airplanes, but I don't recall seeing this aircraft. The four engines in a business jet would have stood out, or even seeing it at airports or movies etc. Its a dark horse.
Aww how cute it is.
mini engines
A 4 engine jet smaller than Avro-146 is impractical...though It would've been an aviation unicorn had it went into limited production and a couple survived through today.
Those engines and pods look identical to the booster engines fitted to B-52's in the past.
I'm not surprised this aircraft failed to sell, it would've been a forward maintenance financial monster with four turbojets.
Even in those days, a 4 engine business jet was a dumb idea!!
Looks like a Convair 880
If I was a rich boss of some company then, I would have bought one for sure! But they didn't sell even one, what a shame...
Yeah Airbus robbed the name 220 to name the Bombardier C-Series line the acquired and designated 220.
Cute little bugger!
I wonder if anybody videotaped any part of the 1997 ferry flight?
Why was there a ferry flight?
Was this plane made before Learjet and Cessna jets?
OMG Did not know of this beautiful bird ....Just asked my Jetstar for a divorce
I hope it's not Mexico City you can't say the skies for the pollution I don't know what they meant by that
Looker😎👍❤!
Wow! What a rare find!
Great looking jet!
A 707 cub.
I love you for posting this!!!
Fun fact, this thing has a higher fuel burn than an F-100 Super Sabre.
It's so awansome
At a first look i thought it is an Airbus 343. 4 pipes for one dose, great !
That engine arrangement would be a FOD sucker.
nice jet :)
You learn something new every day!!!
Never heard of this one before.
id buy one. o wait ):
This is beautifully 1960s
I believe this aircraft never achieved FAA certification.
Would be awesome if could fit only (2) modern, more fuel efficient turbo-fan jets, (1) under each wing, upgrade the cockpit to glass and refurb passenger cabin and modern paint scheme.
AEROMAGNUM TV With that much modification, you may as well design a new airframe for efficiency. So basically just a new plane.
Leave cockpit as is, it's analog is too beautiful to destroy with a glass flight deck!
I just came across this today. I wondered a thousand times what had come of the strange 4 engined jet I saw at MAF years ago during an airshow. It was parked on the ramp down close to "Hank's", or Vroman one. A friend told me a little about her. I always loved the way she looked, kind of like a B-58. I bet you had fun getting to fly her to El Paso.
Less efficient engine
i live in El Paso, Texas. is it at the airport?
Where in El Paso is it?
