Back in the 70's, I owned a Tu-114. It was part of my REVELL plastic airplanes models. Even so, it was a jewel among my many other plane in my kid's collection, rivaled only by another star, Tu-144, the Russian Concorde. Both of them had movable parts, propellers, nose, wheels, REVELL was a stellar model maker.
I like the position of the navigator, in that pod with the glass nose cone. He can have a birds eye view of the clouds and earth below. This was a super long range aircraft and they have outfitted it with all the comforts for the comrades.
This machine (Л5611, first prototype) is preserved at the Russian AF museum in Monino. It is still equipped with compartments inside. Compartments were privilege of aircrafts used for international flights. The take off of the prototype (around 2'00) was filmed at the Flight research institute's airfield in Zhukovsky. So you can see some silver strategic bombers in the background (around 2'20), including Tu-95 "Bear" - the father of Tu-114. Bearing in mind that airfield and those bombers were top secret in 1958, I wonder how that scene remained uncensored. What else... Tu-114 is my favorite civil liner.
Awesome leg room and seat width (cry, Ryanair and Spirit passengers), and an actual kitchen instead of a galley (cry, Emirates and SQ passengers)! Not even the A380 has that. The "comrades" were well-treated on board - at least in a promotional film...
+Goytá F. Villela Jr. Every large, long-range airliner between 1930s and 1960s had kitchen and bunk beds, e.g Short Empire flying boats. Tu-114 was the last of this line, built in the same concept of the failed Bristol Brabazon. (And even Tu-114 was also short-lived in the face of long-range jets, being replaced by faster and economical Il-62 and Tu-154.) See that passengers could also smoke. There was no cramped 'low cost carrier' back then. And yes, you're right, only top brasses and their connections who had the privilege of Tu-114 jet-like performance and comfort. Otherwise they flew in mediocre Ilyushin Il-18.
+landak136 Il-62 used 50% more fuel than the Tu-114, which only but decisive drawback was the horrible noise of its supersonic propellers. They produced constant sonic booms which resulted in a terrible noise-level of 112 decibel inside the cabin.

Aeroflot and Japan Airlines jointly operated the TU-114 between Moscow and Tokyo starting on April 17, 1967 (the TU-114 actually had Japan Airlines titles on the front lower part of the fuselage besides the regular Aeroflot titles on the top). The TU-114s eventually gave way to IL-62s and then starting in March 1970 JAL used its own aircraft to fly the route.
The TU 114 was made as the airline version of the TU95 Bear Bomber. there was only a few made and Nikita Kruchev flew in one to the U.N. meeting in New York where he made his infamous speech! 60 years later no prop plane has been faster!
+John Texas Don't know where that experimental prototype engine program went, my guess its probably waiting for FAA certificate of airworthyness, which can take years! More will be revealed if its a success,
I was born too late and on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain to ever see one flying-- this is probably as close as I'll come. Beautiful machine, though.
Just realizing when looking at this video: all these people survived Stalin and the Great Patriotic War, which this video was made barely a generation after. Love history.
I like that part at 6:42 where the passengers are enjoying a nice nap. ... I was on the NJ shore once when a Tu-95 flew about 20+ miles off shore on its way to Cuba. With a Nice F-106 escort from Atlantic City. You could hear that drone of the engines on shore from so far away. The Tu-95 and Tu-114 had the same engines. There's no way a person could sleep with that racket. I'll bet the passengers suffered some pretty serious hearing loss with the acoustic energy radiated from those turboprops.
What's the threshold for damage from sustained exposure? 85? 90? The previous machine I used to fly had a noise warning plaque because it was over 90 at cruise power, I remember that much.
When Nikita Khrushchev had arrived in the US in September 1959 it was Tu-114 that brought him. Funniest thing was that Americans had no stairs big enough, because they didn't have such a large and also fast plane at that time. They were amazed and shocked that CCCP had such advanced machine :D
The Soviets didn't inform the Yanks of this aircraft's requirements. The US could have quickly converted an existing mobile stair truck to accommodated it. Khrushchev was forced to use a step ladder at the top of an available mobile stair truck. Not very dignified. As impressive as it was only Aeroflot bought them. Even their Warsaw pact allies didn't want them.
It was a US embarrassment and that was the goal. Humorous. If I had been Eisenhower, I would have diminished the Soviet coup by asking Khrushchev to conduct him on an examination of the aircraft with press in tow. Lots of smiles and hand shaking would have disarmed Mr. K.
