@pantherxx010 - If you are asking about the flywheel.flex plate - yes. Some engines are externally balanced (weights outside the engine - flywheel/flexplate dampener. Like this 502, I had to install everything that was mounted to the crank in order to balance the assembly.
@pantherxx010 Those weights on the crank are the same weight as the total piston+rod combination, next step is to fit the clutch pressure plate and balance the assembly again, removing weight from the pressure plate only to restore the balance. Cheers Jason
@paulhunter123 - The engine runs smoother, it is done at the factory with a tolerance of plus/minus 10 grams. I balance to plus/minus half a gram, or better. Call me about the cost.
narpiii.... You have to have the bobweights on to represent the rotating and reciprocating weight.... Bobweight is figured as following weights... Piston, Pin , Big End of Rod x2, total weight of Rod, 1pr of Rod Brgs, Rings for 1 Piston, Locks, and 5g for oil... Hope this helps !!!!
@wea619 - Please restate your question, I don't understand 'does the easy to high rev..' My crystal ball is a bit cloudy today to try and figure out what you are asking?!?!?!
Im wanting to build a sbf using a block out of a 97 explorer and im wanting to use the explorer accessories, meaning id have to use the explorer harmonic balancer with is shorter than the mustang's. My problem is that there isnt any explorer harmonic balancers for internally balanced engines or even 28oz. Would you be able to machine some weight off of a stock 50oz harmonic balancer to balance it with an internally balanced rotating assembly?
What can happend if you balance the crankshaft without bobweight on a V8 ? My machinist says he had never use that (maybe he only do it on 4cylinders?).
....and i suppose those brass looking shims are representing the weight of the rods and pistonies yes??,, fine and dandy but what about the actual rod swinging madly in the block,,,a true balance would be the balancing of the assembly as its meant to be,,,although this does work maybe theres hope for someone to balance the whole shootin match when assembled,,,imagine that if you can,,,the headache,,,the agony of de-feet,,hhhhhhh ))
@wea619 - The engine will rev more freely and without vibration. The revs are kind of controlled by the camshaft, etc.

@Alexiskayak - I have a program in the computer to calculate how much to remove, but you still have to use experience as you guide.
@chr1s88blue - Having all the bolts in place does not effect balance when tow diametrically opposed bolts are used. Good question.
That is one quiet running engine!
@zapwatt - Yes, all parts of the rotating assembly.
@pantherxx010

TO perform this the customer should send you the intended flywheel and harmonic balancer along with their crank?
@rwdford - The "bob weights" represent 50% of the total rod & piston weight
Great video as always thanks for sharing!
scary to watch something that weighs as much as a crank spin as fast as it does cool video thanks for sharning
@rojeremy - No and yes I do polish after balancing.
@paulhunter123 - The engine runs smoother, it is done at the factory with a tolerance of plus/minus 10 grams. I balance to plus/minus half a gram, or better. Call me about the cost.
I can not say that this is precision balancing.

@chr1s88blue - No, and I don't know of anyone that spins cranks that high.
@fiatnutz
Is it because of the relatively complex reciprocating + circular motion of the rods + the more simple reciprocating motion of the pistons?
what is the funcion of the "weights" in the balancing process ? shouldnt be enough to balance withought the weights? thanks man... love your vids
John have you ever heard of Allan Armstrong? a well known engine building up here in eastern Canada..just curious

That's interesting, I didn't know that, why use 50% of the total weight?
@tiagobaracho - Which weights? 'counter' or 'bob' weights?
What can happend if you balance the crankshaft without bobweight on a V8 ?
My machinist says he had never use that (maybe he only do it on 4cylinders?).
then it isnt truly a balanced rotating assembly
what are the benefits of a crank balance, why is it not done at the factory? how much does it cost
great vid man thanks for posting
Does a 4 cyl engine need those "weights" in rod journals?? Do you need to polish the journals witch run on the balancer after the balancing proces??
@fiatnutz i think he means the 'bob' weights
hi,after balancing the crankshaft, does the easy to high rev the engine & eliminates vibration too?tq
smooth whats supporting it? ball bearings?
@fiatnutz the weights you attach where the connection rod would be...
If i spin a cranckshaft without this weights it couldn´t be balanced ?
Thanks
those engines still arent done??
are the parts still on the floor in the assembly room?
:D
hi.. is it better to have it internally ballanced rather then externally?
hi, after doing crank balancing do i have to change my bearing or just stick with oem?
whats the average cost for a knife edge and balance on an inline 6 crankshaft?
can you balance a crankshaft up to 10k rpm?
@fiatnutz oh never mind, you already answered that
What make is that balancer?
4 or 7 mains? Best to call about stuff like this since I don't give quotes on this kind of stuuf on the Tube.
Cadillac engine??
Your flywheel is not true on the out side.
doesnt need to be
bob weights... all pistons rods and bit where balanced why put that weight in the calculation ?
cool
only if your flywheel bolts are all the same weight john haha
@VMATT500C - zero.

No, big block Chevrolet.
