Its nice to see that my video is being so well received. Thanks guys! I wanted to do some more behind the scenes videos like this. If you have some thoughts, shoot em my way. I have full access to an engine building shop and a few piston manufacturers.
Excellent video, thanks for posting! When I saw it was externally balanced I was thinking of a small block Ford as I had mine done last month.Looked to me like a very thorough job,I appreciate someone who does things the correct way!
Hey Everyone.. I'm the dude that made this little vid for my client Coast High Performance, located in Torrance, California. Its been awhile since i've come back to this video and over 18,000 views since I posted it in 2010 is SO AWESOME! I dig all the comments and discussion.
adigitalmindonline I have a question. When they drill the holes in the counterweights on the crankshaft, is the original casting that far out of center when they turn the concentric and eccentric bearing surfaces? or is that because the engine will use an un-even firing order that the ideal weights need to be changed?
This is a tremendous video to get an overview of balancing. Can't imagine how challenging it must have bee to do that job before the advent of computers! Thanks for posting it. -- Jimmy Bullitt.
Because knife edging would add several hundred dollars in machine shop time - which for a $500 Scat or Eagle crank going into a 500hp Street machine or boat motor would be a complete waste.
Hinnerk16 each weight added to the crankshafts journals is the weight of the Connecting rod bearings, connecting rod, journals, Piston cap, and all rings. ect ect everything they showed of him measuring is input into the balancing.
A job well done!😊

I really enjoyed watching this video. It made me understand in a clearer way how my engine kit was balanced :)
That's an awful lot of material removal @5:05, how come the counterweight wasn't knife edged?

love the crankshaft part, cool stuff
Great video and sound editing!
Thanks for sharing great video
Is this shop still in Torrance? I can't seem to find it.
The "clamps" he put on the crankshaft.. was it like dummy weight ? with the exact weight as the rod and pistons ?
GlennnD yea exactly it's a counterweight

what engine is that?
The thumbs down are from the guys who wished they had their engines balanced!
awesome
jeje massive job on this :D
So it gets balanced electronically, then he throws a sander/polisher to it and removes material from the lobes free hand? hmmm
That was a ton of material removed but if it needed to be done then so be it.
Its not only rebalance
