    My cat Burkley has a very important job! I’m autistic and he helps me be more independent. He gives me a reason to wake up, puts me on a daily schedule, and helps me stay on top of keeping my apartment clean for him. He also lays on my chest when I’m overwhelmed and purrs and licks my chin. Then when he can feel my heartbeat go back down, he goes to my stomach or lap. He is my angel!

    I have a service cat by accident. By accident meaning she was not trained but a natural. I have a medical condition called sleep apnea (in English) and she nudge me everytime I can't breathe in my sleep and then she started cuddling and her purrs normalized my breathing while asleep. My doc's recommendation was CPAP at night but since mimi the cat was adopted, I don't use it anymore. She is a very smart cat and I hope you discover her channel someday. Much love from the Philippines.

    Not exactly a working cat, but Oyen the orange cat singlehandedly doubled the ticket purchase of our National Zoo (which was struggling even before the pandemic) when he moved in with the capybara family in their enclosure. I got to meet Super Stationmaster Tama before she passed away. She was feeble and weak, but when she saw a camera, she made sure to show her good side. She was so sweet and precious and cared for her train customers. I have yet to see her shrine at the station, but I have met Ni-tama, who is not as nice as Tama was, sadly. I'll have to take another trip out there soon. It is very far off the beaten track, but close-by there is a strawberry patch where you can have all-you-can-eat strawberries during strawberry season.

    • @paintedwings74
      @paintedwings74 8 місяців тому +13

      It sounds like she is worthy of her own shrine, and having her life and personality remembered for a long time. One can hope that Ni-tama will become more gentle-hearted as she ages; some cats gain a different outlook over time, as their bones get achy and their appreciation for their human servants grows.

    • @ldavis3457
      @ldavis3457 8 місяців тому +1

      I went to meet Tama a couple of months before she passed away. She was indeed weak at that time. Nitama was beautiful when I saw her. I couldn't tell how nice she was (or not) from how she was housed.
      It is worth it to visit that area for the trains. In addition to the tamaden, there is a strawberry train and a toy train. And of course the cat-shaped train station.
      Cats are often part of tourist attractions in Japan. There is another cat station master, a castle cat, and at least one cat island.

There’s even one that legit fought for both sides in the same war because his ships he was on kept getting sunk and he would be adopted into whatever military picked him up.

    Thank you for this lovely video. It inspired me to share a few other examples. Félicette a stray Parisian cat was launched into space in 1963 as part of the French space program. She survived the launch and landing and her adventure was commemorated on a stamp. Another library cat is Browser, the library cat and mascot for White Settlement, Texas that was hired as a mouser.
    Cats hace been employed as mousers at the New Hampshire's Mount Washington Observatory for years. The building sits at the top of the highest peak in that area and it attracts rodents because it offers warm, dry, shelter. A cat called Marty was employed in the capacity of Mouser as recently as 2007.
    The University of East Anglia, here in the UK, has Sylvester the campus cat. He has the job of improving the mental health and well being of staff and students and his merchandise is sold to support a mental health charity. A primary school in Turkey adopted Sleepyhead, a stray cat, as mascot, playmate and companion to the students. Yang, mascot at Hexham Hospital, keeps company with staff and patients, including those being treated for cancer. The list is endless.

    My cat Maru is the official alarm clock and tutor. She would get me up at 4:00am and help me study for my exams. Her official duties included sleeping on my feet to keep them warm, guarding the door so I wouldn’t be interrupted, and dropping a sock on my lap at 8:00am for a study break. Together we passed the FAA A&P exams. She would even stretch out on the floor to show me how aerodynamics work.

    My Mom and stepdad went on vacation in the Thousand Islands and stayed at a hotel that had a working cat whose job was to sleep in a basket on the counter. Maybe he was elderly at that point, or maybe his nap schedule just happened to coincide with Mom's tourist comings and goings. He was a grey cat named Ashley, so she decided she wanted a grey cat named Ashley. (It was a name for boys back then, it didn't become a girl's name until later). When she got back home she went on the search for a grey kitten, found him, and named him Ashley. But one day a friend visited with her little toddler, who tormented the poor kitten. Manners being what they were at that time, you expected your guest to parent their own children, and didn't speak up even when the children destroyed your house or tormented your pets. Mom was just relieved that little Ashley went into hiding and got away from the brat whose mother was lazy and inconsiderate. But at one point Mom didn't see where the toddler went, and she did speak up about that, because he could have gotten outside. They found him and continued the visit for however many hours longer. After they left, she went looking for Ashley, but couldn't find him. Earlier, the brat had gotten a scratch from Ashley and called him, "Bad kitty." So Mom phoned the friend and gently told her to ask her brat what to do with bad kitties. She was going to get the kid to reveal and confess. But the mother freaked out, and finally decided to parent her kid, except she screamed at him demanding to know what he did to the kitten. Of course the brat clammed up. Said he didn't do anything, didn't know anything. The next day, Mom just happened to be changing out seasonal items inti and from the storage room that she only went into rarely. When she opened the bottom drawer, the poor little kitten sprang straight up in the air howling. He was never the same after that. He hated kids with a passion, except my son the Cat Whisperer. My son was barely 3 years old, but he knew how to gain the trust of a cat that had suffered that kind of abuse. They were buds. He got along with my young stepbrother, too. Mom got rid of the litterbox because Ashley preferred to go outside in the bushes, except in winter. She was suspicious of where he was relieving himself, but never smelled or found anything. She just blamed my stepbrother for not flushing the toilet 😂😹 That poor kid! Finally one day Mom heard someone peeing in the bathroom with the door open and light closed, and when she looked in, there was Ashley on the toilet seat squatting. He scratched at the seat, but didn't flush. So after that, whenever she had company, she would make an excuse to check the toilet. The saddest thing, though, was when she moved, Ashley refused to go with her. He disappeared when she was packing. Neighbors kept an eye out, but couldn't catch him if they saw him. He never went back to the old place, either. We'll never know what happened to him. He was a good cat.

They put cat doors on the office doors, so that the cats could escape, eat, or use the litter box, but they also loved to mingle with the customers and could often be found lounging on the carpet or in a chair in the children's section.

    Hearing of the railway cat reminded me of this poem by threat cat lover T S Eliot

    SKIMBLESHANKS
    THE RAILWAY CAT
    by
    T.S. Elliot
    There's a whisper down the line at 11.39
    When the Night Mail's ready to depart,
    Saying "Skimble where is Skimble
    has he gone to hunt the thimble?
    We must find him or the train can't start."
    All the guards and all the porters
    and the stationmaster's daughters
    They are searching high and low,
    Saying "Skimble where is Skimble
    for unless he's very nimble
    Then the Night Mail just can't go."
    At 11.42 then the signal's nearly due
    And the passengers are frantic to a man--
    Then Skimble will appear and he'll saunter to the rear:
    He's been busy in the luggage van!
    He gives one flash of his glass-green eyes
    And the signal goes "All Clear!"
    And we're off at last for the northern part
    Of the Northern Hemisphere!
    You may say that by and large
    it is Skimble who's in charge
    Of the Sleeping Car Express.
    From the driver and the guards
    to the bagmen playing cards
    He will supervise them all, more or less.
    Down the corridor he paces
    and examines all the faces
    Of the travellers in the First and the Third;
    He establishes control by a regular patrol
    And he'd know at once if anything occurred.
    He will watch you without winking
    and he sees what you are thinking
    And it's certain that he doesn't approve
    Of hilarity and riot, so the folk are very quiet
    When Skimble is about and on the move.
    You can play no pranks with Skimbleshanks!
    He's a Cat that cannot be ignored;
    So nothing goes wrong on the Northern Mail
    When Skimbleshanks is aboard.
    Oh, it's very pleasant when
    you have found your little den
    With your name written up on the door.
    And the berth is very neat
    with a newly folded sheet
    And there's not a speck of dust on the floor.
    There is every sort of light-
    you can make it dark or bright;
    There's a handle that you turn to make a breeze.
    There's a funny little basin
    you're supposed to wash your face in
    And a crank to shut the window if you sneeze.
    Then the guard looks in politely
    and will ask you very brightly
    "Do you like your morning tea weak or strong?"
    But Skimble's just behind him
    and was ready to remind him,
    For Skimble won't let anything go wrong.
    And when you creep into your cosy berth
    And pull up the counterpane,
    You ought to reflect that it's very nice
    To know that you won't be bothered by mice--
    You can leave all that to the Railway Cat,
    The Cat of the Railway Train!
    In the watches of the night
    he is always fresh and bright;
    Every now and then he has a cup of tea
    With perhaps a drop of Scotch
    while he's keeping on the watch,
    Only stopping here and there to catch a flea.
    You were fast asleep at Crewe
    and so you never knew
    That he was walking up and down the station;
    You were sleeping all the while
    he was busy at Carlisle,
    Where he greets the stationmaster with elation.
    But you saw him at Dumfries,
    where he speaks to the police
    If there's anything they ought to know about:
    When you get to Gallowgate
    there you do not have to wait--
    For Skimbleshanks will help you to get out!
    He gives you a wave of his long brown tail
    Which says: "I'll see you again!
    You'll meet without fail on the Midnight Mail
    The Cat of the Railway Train.

    No doubt by now someone has mentioned that the Guinness brewery in Scotland has a cat on duty. There have been library cats as well. Taylor and Baker have a book about their lives in a Nevada library. 😺

    Excellent report, Jackson!
    There was a cat named "Dirt" at the Virginia City and Truckee (Nevada) Railroad who used to take care of vermin, greet visitors, etc. He passed on a couple of years ago, but his legend lives on.

    my cat had a job in an antique store. he went over there every morning, at and lounged on all the furniture showing everyone how incrediable comfortable it was and they escorted him home at 5 pm. he got paid in tuna sandwiches. and well, all the attention he wanted. Of course he was a ginger tabby. Ginger tabbies have got to be the best most friendly ats. Of course I believe that all cats have great personalities if you let them show them off.

    Just so everyone who isn't British is aware: Larry's hiring is generally considered to be the only decent thing that David Cameron managed to achieve in his time in office. There is a general unofficial rule that, should any foreign power even so much as LOOK at Larry the wrong way, the entire population of the UK will chase that foreign power down, beat it to within an inch of its life, dump it into a bin, and then set fire to it.
    If the same foreign power looked at Cameron funny, we'd probably ask it if it wanted us to hold its coat while it got a run-up.
    Be warned, world. We're very fond of Larry, and we have a tendency towards near-farcical levels of ultraviolence when we're upset. 🤣

    I read Dewey's book and loved it. Still cried at the end even though I knew Dewey had passed several yrs before.
    I never knew about Tama before and now I'm intrigued about learning even more about her.

    Proves the Egyptians were right to honor cats by deifying them as Bast.
    If people in the Middle Ages had been smart they would have setup brigades of municipal mousers. That could have reduced the the death toll from the Black Plague.
    One thing that had changed for the better. Lots of seniors who go into independent living or assisted living are now allowed to keep cats and smaller dogs. It’s a real comfort knowing we can bring our feline companions with us.
