- Cat Mythbuster, reporting for duty! In today’s video I’ll break down four common misconceptions (mythconceptions?) about one of the most misunderstood (mythunderstood?) animals on the planet. Whether it’s longstanding stereotypes from cartoons or harmful ideas about cat nutrition, I’m here to set the record straight!

Interesting although most of these myths I knew already. Not sure if learned over the years if cat ownership or if from other Jackson videos.
Like false cats always land on their feet instead they often do . Righting mechanism , flexible spine and sense of balance common in cats. But from some heights now enough time to right . Also doesn't mean they will not get injured.
Cats need dry or crunchy for good dental health. Heard best to use wet exclusive so what to do for dental health.
I can't imagine cleaning their teeth with a toothbrush. I have hard enough time grooming them.
Myth?
So this isn't just for cats, but growing up I was told that a raw egg is good for a cat's (and dog's) coat. That it helps keep it healthy and shiny. True or false?

@@TheDaenvgiell False. I have been told that raw eggs are bad. The raw egg has a protein avidin . Avidin interferes with the absorption of biotin. This vitamin is essential for cats

Never wanted a cat - never liked them. Found one outside sick, tick-infested, and took it to the vet. We bonded so well and he is now my best friend. I knew nothing about cats and this video, along with all of your others, provided me with so much knowledge. I'm a better cat dude now. Thank you

@@L1velaughl3igh._ A friend - a guy who adores cats - said that he found society seemed through media and such to portray cats as a feminine animal and dogs, at least many breeds, as a more masculine animal - and thus he found the same that many men do not like cats. In my experience, it was just neighbor cats tearing up or flower beds - I probably should have blamed their owner and not the cats, though - now that I know how great cats can be

You have been a recipient of what is commonly known as the “cat delivery network”! They find you! Somehow, that little guy knew he needed you and you needed him.
Also, people who say they “don’t like cats” generally did not grow up with them, or at least didn’t have anyone in a mentor role in their life who taught them how to approach or interact with them appropriately.
The fact that you are watching Jackson’s videos means you are already an amazing and dedicated cat dad!

When my cat had kittens, she used to dump them on my dog while she went out. She totally trusted him with them and he was thrilled. When she died, he seriously grieved. We had to get him another cat.

I has a dog that loved my cats. When on a walk she'd go up to strange cats who would slap her face - dog would look so surprised and hurt. I stopped letting her approach strange cats.
@@musicteacher5757 🥰 We got him a tiny rescue kitten. Fitted into the palm of my hand. When we showed her to him, he was so excited, every hair on his body stood on end and he started shaking. That kitten got washed to within an inch of her life. She survived him by some years, but I had the other problem. She wasn't really wary of strange dogs 😄
OMG I'm so sorry. That is so sad. Hate to know when animals grieve over another's passing. I know it hurts humans immensely. Hate for our unhuman but more than human loved ones to feel the same pain. Hope he's better now with your new kitty. Sorry
While she went out, is that how she got pregnant?
My mom broke her knee and, out of the blue, my cat (Cat Benatar) started laying right beside it and purring. Her doctors were really surprised at how quickly she healed. After she was able to get up and walk around, my cat began laying at the end of the bed again. She has actually become my mom's caretaker. She even comes in and meows when it's time for her to go to bed! It's hilarious!😂

I'm new to having cats, and I thought they could see so well in the dark they'd be fine.
The cats I have are... oddly perfect. They've wrecked nothing, they only play with what I want them to play with, and they listen when I ask them to leave a room.
But for a few weeks the one would come up to me at night in bed, crying out, purring to soothe and making biscuits on my bed + trying to get my attention before peeing. Turned out she was scared of the pitch black she'd have to walk through to get to the litter box in the unfamiliar house.
Dim nightlight to the rescue.

I already knew that sudden change in cat behavior could be a sign and that was exactly mine cat did 4 weeks ago!
Like very clingy and long purring sessions while lay on me, the moment I thought ‘this is the loudest purring I ever heard her doing’
I made an appointment for the vet!
And yes..... pneumonia, in very early state... i was really quick with it.
Did antibiotics for a week!
And she seems healthier then before and the only purring I hear are Happy purrings!! 🎉

During our cats' last checkup (2 12+ years old siblings), the veterinarian said that both cats' eyes are showing slight opacity, normal with aging. She said that the only expected effect is that they won't see quite as well in very dim light. We had recently moved to another house, so I completed my placement of a few night lights in wall receptacles by adding two more, at the cats's water dishes. The night lights were for human safety, now they can aid the cats, too.

My brother and dad would always feed my cats milk and icecream, i always told them don't do that because i knew it was bad. They never listened, never took me seriously. Each and every time they would do that the cats ended up getting sick. They always told me "a little is ok for them". Some people refuse to learn.

And the purring. A big thanks for that one. I remember a man telling me how he would swing his cat around and the cat “loved it” bc the cat was purring! I’m sure that poor kitty was terrified. My one cat used to purr when I’d cut his nails - and I know he wasn’t purring out of happiness.
my baby was in vet icu for a week and when she started to react she started purring crazily, everyone in the hospital thought it was bcs she is the nicest cat and she was happy, but I knew it was bcs she was scared with the whole situation… but she fully recovered and now she purrs just out of happiness 🎉
I've got a stress purrer - happy to say my vet realises! And handles him with kid gloves
I was a pet sitter for a couple of decades. I'm a cat person and couldn't believe it when one cat I was pet sitting for for a few times would not come near me. It took her 5 years! But she finally tentatively got up in my lap. Turns out her owner had passed away awhile back and his wife didn't like her. So she would hide often. I felt so sorry for her.
Glad you were able to be in her life, however sporadically. ❤
This gives me hope. I’ve had a cat for 4 years who won’t let me touch her. She has all the other signs of being bonded.

@@GrannyLinn I had one for a long time that almost always wanted to be in the same room I was in--she'd faithfully follow me around the house unless I was vacuuming. She liked playing with wand toys, but that's about as close as she'd get. After a couple of years she'd sit on the other end of the sofa with me or get on the far corner of the bed, but it wasn't until she got older that she wanted to be pet. She was a rescue, so I have no idea whether that was just her personality or some humans had treated her badly. I miss her.
@@GrannyLinn We had a boy cat who came from an outdoor situation who would only approach me if his best buddy stood between us. When his best buddy cat passed, he picked another best buddy, but then she also passed (these were all cats from the same outdoor community which had been threatened and so were brought inside for their protection; because we were caregivers, they had known us from young adulthood if not before). And then, after 12 years of living inside with us, he decided to see for himself if we were okay to hang out with. He ended up becoming a massive lap cat, although he only liked to sit on my lap when I was at my computer (probably because he knew I would be there for awhile) - he would try to herd me towards my computer whenever he felt like having a little petting session followed by a lap nap! Of course, some kitties are just never really into physical affection - kinda like some humans - but there is always hope! Thank you for being patient with her; I hope she comes around soon. :)
The video editor deserves a raise because the edits and how they'd close up on the drawings (and sad music towards the end at the one) was hilarious. 😂

My cats eat raw now. And they dont want extra water much. Turds shrunk to smaller than half a pencil.
Also realize that whole raw milk is totally different than store bottled homogenized and pasteurized. We drink fresh raw. Cats drink a little bit with no bad consequences. But not thirsty since eating rae.

Thank you for busting these myths. I used to have a cat who only had one level when she purred: loud. She purred every time I took her to the vet, but I knew from her body language that she was scared. Only one of the vets we visited over 13 years was able to hear her heartbeat and they let me know she had a heart murmur at an early age. Most of the vets couldn't hear her heartbeat over her purrs. I never knew cats purred for any other reason besides happiness until I got her. She was a consistent teacher.
I just wanted to say, this lesson reminds me of a myth pertaining to dogs. Some people think dogs only wag their tails when they're happy. This isn't true either. There are different types of wags and a dog can wag its tail if it is scared or upset.
Dog's tail wagging simply means they're in a high-energy mental state, that energy can be positive like being happy or negative like being angry. Same for cats, actually. They wag (more like flick) their tails when they're excited hunting or when they're upset and wary. Cats sometimes do a different "wag" that's just the tip of the tail that wags, and that generally means calm but paying attention. As with any situation, you need to take into account the whole body language situation and context to correctly read the message.
I have a cat and a dog..They both weight 13 pounds and are the same height. They get along really well, the dog lets the cat know when it’s time to play or not and the cat will harass her until she says ok…lol
I got a shy, little scaredy cat and was clueless, my first cat. I just followed everything Jackson Galaxy said and now I have the best cat in the world 😻 A little, black cat, we are both very thankful 💜

Our cats murrrr a lot. Like a conversation with us or one another. Out of “hello” or “surprise” or “annoyance”.

My cat used to, whenever she would see me in the last few months it was always a fun little "mrrrp". :')
I have on where that is his preferred mode of communication for EVERYTHING. It's adorable. He also chatters (like most do at birds) when he is annoyed at our other cat for walking by him.
Our ginger girl does that whenever she is close to me and moves. Like when she's cuddling and then decides to get up and use the box or something or when she is about to jump up on the bed. It's like a warning that she is there. The 5 year old boy who stays a lot can't seem to understand she's just being polite. The two of them annoy each other to no end.

To give a better summary for why cats can't have milk:
When kittens reach weaning age (4-5 weeks), their bodies naturally stop producing the enzyme lactase which helps them break down the sugar (or lactose) in the milk. This is where we get the term lactose-intolerant. Because they can't break down the sugar in the milk, just like humans who are lactose-intolerant, they experience diarrhea.
Exactly, and that's also why a huge percentage of human population can drink milk, because a mutation that occour many times many thousands of years ago that make us produce this enzyme all life long. The possibility to eat/digest more stuff was a big vantage in surviving

Not just diarrhea, the worst kind of diarrhea where fluids get sucked into your intestines and where bacteria instead of your enzymes have to do the job. You bloat, you lose a lot of fluid you cramp and until it’s over you ask yourself several times whether just dying wouldn’t be preferable.
Always double check your coffee.

Myth? What about the one people used to say that the cat would steal your breath in your sleep, or make you fall on the stairs on purpose, you know, the old put the cat out every night before you go to bed myth?
I've had my two shelter female cats for 11 years now. Mother cat and what was the runt of the litter.
The runt is no longer a runt, but on the heavy side 😸
As for the mother cat. She had a tough life before I adopted her, from what I know anyway.
It was almost two years until, I got her to purr and seek human contact on her own 😿
Today she's an attention wh0re who follows me around everywhere I go
Sure it can be annoying, but I'm happy that she is happy and enjoying life ❤
My late girl of 17, same thing. She'd been owned by someone who dumped her in downtown Atlanta! She had it extremely tough. She walked up to the vet we adopted her from, while he was downtown. She was six months old, very dirty, all skin and bones. It took her two years to warm up to us, and it happened suddenly during a medical emergency. We literally had to coddle and cuddle her through it all. She became a totally different cat once she knew she could trust us. She became our shadow. Losing her at 17 in 2002 from cancer, was heartbreaking. I still miss her. A new love coincidentally came to me 16 years later. A Siamese mix, Babette. She was five months old, and is now five. I love her as much as my other girl, just differently.

My mom had cats and hamsters. When a Houdini, aka hamster, would somehow get out, my mom’s cats would gently tap it with its paws until it tapped it to my mom. The hamsters were never injured and the cats were always very tender with them. It surprised me every time. It was so sweet.
ETA- I keep a night light or two in every room so my cats can hang out and/so sleep wherever they’re comfortable. ❤️
I think it's important to note that although cats require less water when they eat meat, cats on a dry food diet require more water consumption. And once a cat needs water, it is important that they have access to it right away. Preferably available at all times. (I'm not an expert though 🤷♀️) Love these videos and the amazing work Jackson does😊
Maybe it's my culture, but I was raised to believe cats would smother babies by wanting to smell the milk on their breath and so accidentally smothering them.

Yep. This is why I always feed my foster kittens wet food. I also keep a few water bowls around the house. (My resident cat is on an alternating wet/raw diet.)

My labrabor grew up with my cat being his favorite playmate, he stills lets the cat win every "fight," it's the cutest thing I've ever seen

A LOT of other youtube channels I follow, their subscriber percentage is around 20.
That's not to say that we can't do better though! Getting this channel up to the 80's range would be a worthy goal
I thought that, too, 40% subscribed is better than average.
Having a low percentage of subscribed viewers is good because it means your videos are being shown to new people. If 100% of your viewers were subscribed, it would mean you aren't reaching new people.

I had some baked beans once, set them down and went to the kitchen to get a drink. When I came back, ALL the BBQ sauce was gone.... only a plate of scattered white beans remained. McCavity (my first cat as an adult) was a former stray cat, so maybe that explains why he would eat a lot of crazy things... He was a fabulous cat (aren't they all?) who would play "hide and seek" with me. He would dash into a room, I'd go in, acting like I was looking for him (usually, he hadn't hidden very well) and I would say "Where's my kitty cat".... "Where did that kitty cat go?" and purposely not "find him". He would then run into another room.... so I'd repeat the same thing. He would be hunkered down, his tail swishing... excited. He loved the game and so did I! Been a lot of years since he's been on this earth. I miss him still. RIP sweet buddy.
A feral cat had kittens on my property and I caught the kittens and got homes for them. Two of the homes that took kittens had dogs. In both cases, the kittens bonded with the dogs and cuddle with them to take naps. One of the kittens was even going into the crate with one of the dogs to snuggle with it.
I had a cat that hunted, played and slept with my dog. I even had to give the cat a bone so he wouldn't take my dog's. When my dog died, my cat sat in the yard where they played for a week grieving.
Some people I know will never get a male cat because they believe males spray around the house and females do not. I know for a fact that this is a myth and just depends on the individual cat. I try to tell them but they will not budge, and always opt for a female. The opposite of this is people saying they will never get a female because they are more diva-like. Again, it all depends on the individual cat. In my adult life I've had 4 female cats and 10 male cats. It's not that I prefer males over females; it just worked out that way with how they came into my life when needing to be rescued. Only two of the male cats sprayed occasionally after I had introduced another male into the house. The spraying stopped once they got used to each other. The females were just as cute and affectionate as the males and I never noticed any diva-like behavior. It annoys me when people try to pigeon-hole cat gender or breed into being only a certain way. Every cat is as individual as people are.

@@vickiatabi4235 Yes, I agree that generally this is the case. Both my males were neutered as kittens and never sprayed until I brought another male in the house later in their lives. I guess they are/were "Napoleon" kitties that tend to be more insecure about their territories.
Lol. . .our second cat was intact male stray that took us something 2-3 months before the vet was able to get him to be fixed. In all that time it was only the last two weeks that he ever sprayed >.> He was a lovely gentlemen and I couldn't even be mad about the two times (and one other accident) that happened. He's even more gentlemanly and happy now that he is fixed.
Hi Jackson... I have 2 small dogs and every time we foster a litter(we are notorious foster fails) my male, Oliver, goes into protective mode with the baby kittens... we now have 11 cats with the 2 youngest at 11 mos. old...and he still plays referee when they play fight... ALL of them loves him & he loves them ALL back...
I suspect that the "dogs and cats don't get along" idea comes from the old days when it was far more common for dogs and cats to roam around freely outdoors.
We can blame the Ancient Greeks for the idea that cats and dogs don't get along. One of the earliest portrayals of cats in Ancient Greek art is a drawing on a pot of two people trying to force a cat to fight with a dog.
Have had my cat for 14 years now and just got another kitten, my mom wanted to give him cow milk essentially and instantly told them a big fat “NO!” I learned through experience and tons of research. I’m entering a new phase with my senior cat and learning new things because he is getting old, but I hope I have him for many more years still.

It feels like tv really perpetuates myths about cats the most. Like with cats and dogs, but cartoons depict cats drinking milk almost all the time.
When cows were milked by hand the barn cats would line up to get a squirt direct from the cow's bit straight into their mouth. I wonder if the completely unprocessed milk was more digestible than the stuff we get from the store.

Yes, raw milk is far more digestible than pasteurized, homogenized stuff we are given. I used to buy raw milk from a local farmer. They have to sell it by law, labeled as "raw milk for pets". But when you get it home, hey, the milk police don't get to know what you do with it. I would make the best yogurt ever. It tasted a thousand times better than store bought milk.
My 10 cats range from 2 years young to almost 19 years old. I have had cats all my life and yet both my cats and yourself, Mr. Galaxy, still manage to teach me new things. Thank you!!! 😸

Jackson, thank you for all your great tips and advice, and laughs as well. I've had cat's all my life but even though I thought I knew a lot, I actually didn't. My cats, and even my dogs, have a lot better lives and are a lot happier because of the things I've learnt from you. I'm always recommending you to my friends, especially if they have just become new guardians or are about to xx
I love this question! I have a cat who will do tail twitches just randomly. It doesn't seem to matter the situation/environment. She could be playing, eating, just walking around... her tail seems to randomly twitch, a lot. I read it can be a curiosity thing. I'd like to hear Jackson's professional opinion though.
Lol, I think it really depends on the cat.
Our second cat was an intact stray when we found him. He clearly has gotten into actual fights before (first time we saw him he had scabs) I've watched him play with our other cat. . .he hunkers down, his tail lashes, his ears go back. . .all while our other is laying belly exposed on the floor watching him. He's the one instigating it, and its kinda funny to watch. I've always tried to monitor them since they CAN go from rough play to chasing each others through the house with one or the other extremely annoyed na dyelling their heads off. . .but they also go right back to it five minutes later. There's never been blood or fur, just very ruffled feathers.
He also gets really tail lashy/twitchy when he has the zoomies and is in hyper mode.
@@hallaloth3112 Does your cats twitchiness seem to stem more from the base of the tail? My cat doesn't fully lash her tail. It's a twitchy/flittering kind of situation. Almost like if she had cat wedgie and was trying to just quickly get it out. Or if a bug landed on her butt and she wanted to flick it off. It happens randomly and frequently enough that I've taken notice.
@@imananonymoususer It depends on the situation. If he's playing/hyper it's usually from the base/midway down the tail. If he's just resting it's usually just a subtle sort of flutter if his tail is moving at all. If he's more aware/alert its usually just the tip of his tail.
@@imananonymoususerIf I got it right, I think it is the twitch of happiness. My cat sometimes twitches her tail when I ask her if she is hungry and she is like "YESS I AM!! FOOD! YIPPEE!!".
Like the twitch comes from the middle part instead of the entire tail moving.

MYTH? The most dominant cat will never have to hide their stuff in the litterbox, but the lower-ranking cat in the pack will do for them. So the cat-owner, who of course has to clean the litterbox, will always be seen as lower-ranking from the cats' point of view.

Likewise - I ended up contacting the manufacturer of a food I wanted to try because the ingredient list just said "gelling agent" and I was like, "oh, is this carrageenan?" and the person from the manufacturer was like "oh, no! no, it's guar gum, we wouldn't touch carrageenan!!" - convinced me to give it a go and my cat loves it!
My cats have been on “homemade” food for about 1 1/2 years & they love it! Once, when I ran short on homemade food, I fed them canned & they threw it up!
Both dogs I’ve had were so impossibly sweet and patient with cats that they were able to win over even the most skittish and anti-dog of the feline bunch. I got so lucky, this was even before I knew how to properly introduce them!
Yup, my two dogs pretty much ignored the new cat. Since then one dog passed last year. We got a new pup this year and the cat now ignores the dogs. Occasionally they try to engage in play but aren’t quite sure what the goal/rules are yet. No big fusses tho. I’m almost done with my catio and am considering a second cat. Just stay calm and be prepared for accidents.
I have had (still have) cats & dogs my whole life.
In over 50 years, I have never had a dog act aggressively to our multiple cats. Or any of our feline family members not adjust to our canine family. Even our rescues, feline & canine, all develope strong relationships.

Cats on farms have been drinking milk for centuries. I don't think it has hurt them much. When I was a kid & didn't know any better, I gave my cats anything they wanted, including milk, ice cream & yogurt. They were just fine. I didn't force it on them, & it never was much, but no problems. Maybe we just lucked out. My cats don't care for fountains...bummer. And the WONT-WONT-WONT eat canned food...solve that problem!
I have one who would rather starve than eat wet food. Believe me, I have tried.
My TNR is not a fan of wet food either.
This is true, but also before litter boxes, so the evidence wouldn't be as apparent. Most cats are lactose intolerant. Dairy doesn't necessarily harm them as in destroys their health, just makes their GI system act up, kind of like I know I will regret it if I eat cucumbers, but they're so delicious I usually give in a couple of times each summer. That said, not all cats have the lactose intolerance, so they can have dairy without any intestinal consequences.
My cats enjoyed their water fountains (3 at one point!), but they were misery to clean. Within a few days, the water gets "slimy". You have to break it down into multiple jigsaw pieces and scrub into very hard to reach places. I finally just gave up and use large water dishes which I can keep clean. They drink frequently, despite eating a lot of wet food.
When I had a plastic water fountain it would get slimy. Also later had a cat whose skin near mouth would get red and acne from eating out of plastic food and water bowls. Vet said to switch to stainless or ceramic bowls - and my cats skin got better. About 10 years ago I got a ceramic cat water fountain and it does not get slimy - the only plastic in it is the water pump. Every week empty it out, wash and replace water. (I probably should do that every few days but …) since one of my cats when adopted has early kidney disease vet said good to have a fountain.
And the model you buy, months later, does not have the appropriate filters in the store. Or you buy the filters, then find out the pump no longer works. I gave up on fountains.
Absolutely cats and dogs can get along and be best friends in the home environment. We had the siamese first, then got the dog. The siamese was the lamaze coach when the dog had puppies and often babysat. We kept one of the pups and the cat taught him how to clean paws upon coming into house and play with a mouse. When that cat died, we took the dog with us to get a new kitten, he picked her. Those two were best friends all their lives and the cat mourned for months when the dog died. Well that explains it, cause I never turn on a light to go to the bathroom and the silly cat can't see my feet and gets under them all the time.
The cats and dogs thing reminded me of my sister's long departed lab who LOVED all the kitties! Some liked him to the point where they cuddled with him to sleep, others merely tolerated him. The funniest bit was that they all often had wet cowlicks on their heads because as they passed each other, he always gave them a giant lick on the head. 😂
Hello Jackson, i want you to know how much I appreciate your videos! Whether they make me laugh or cry, they always educate me. I recently lost my fur-family member and if anyone has not watched Jacksons video addressing this topic I highly recommend it. Nobody or nothing has alleviated my grief, not one little bit but you actually helped. Now i know I will always “carry the loss and the love” thank you so much Jackson for being a part of my family. Im sorry for your loss, it sucks. I was a vet tech million moons ago and I learned this: even if it hurts right now, it doesnt erase the years you had together. The time spent together is always greater than the loss, we just lose perspective when the hurt is recent. Maybe think about getting a new kitty? Not to replace your previous cat, nothing can do that, but theres many rescues in need of homes and furry company always helps. Just a thought :)
Always appreciate our Caturdays with you! I was surprised you didn't mention a few things, though. 1 re milk 2 re night vision. 1)The milk myth probably started because of barn cats. Back in the day, people had a cow in their barn, and a cat to catch the rodents. I imagine the kittens were like, "oh...what's that?" Could be that the people giving them cream didn't notice the smells, or repercussions, because the cats went outside. Or, because the cats were exposed to it at an early age? 🤔 2)People might also think cats can 'see in the dark' because, although they don't know it, the cat also uses it's ears & nose! It's like radar. They have a great way of triangulating. Even in the dark! I'm always so amazed! Thank you, Jackson!
I have found that raw milk whether it be cow or goat is much better tolerated by cats. It's a fairly pure protein except for the lactose. Which is a sugar. Cats don't seem to have sweet receptors on their tongues like we do. So fruit and other sweet stuff doesn't usually interest them at all.

I do think the milk myth is more nuanced than that, especially if you are concerned with lactose.
For example, concerning goat milk, it naturally has less lactose than cow's milk. It also has oligosaccharides which are known to reduce intestinal inflammation.
And if you've ever seen old Victorian pictures and paintings of cats being given cow's milk or cream and wondered why, it is important to remember that this was the era before pasteurization. Unpasteurized milk has a natural compound in it called lactase which breaks down lactose and makes it easier to digest. This is not the case for pasteurized milk. There's actually a lot of debate over whether or not pasteurization can lead to lactose intolerance!
Edit: gattilucia makes some excellent points regarding lactase below! From what I've gathered, it seems lactase is not actually present in unpasteurized milk but is produced by the intestines in response to it. This doesn't occur in adult cats. Thanks for sharing!
Other than what you are describing, some stores sell cow milk with highly reduced lactose for lactose intolerant people. Some pet stores even sell special cat milk with reduced lactose as well.
Not to mention, cats can and will try to eat or drink anything and everything their humans are, regardless of whether it’s good for them or not. My sister’s ex boyfriend had a cat that would even try to sneak drinks of his whiskey!
Cats aren't lactose tolerant as adults. In humans, lactose tolerance is primarily genetic. People whose ancestors kept cattle for thousands of years tend to have it, others don't. There are actually multiple genetic mutations independently arising in humans-some of which are extremely efficient at processing cows milk, even more than most lactose tolerant people. It's a trait evolved to fully take advantage of the resource of having cattle. About 1/3rd of humans have evolved to tolerate non-human milk in adulthood specifically in order to take advantage of those nutrients.
Cats aren't humans though, they don't have the genes to tolerate milk that long, especially other species milk. But they often will try to get at it if you're trying to milk an animal in front of them. They want it, but it's bad for them. You stop them from drinking it like you stop your dog from eating your chocolates.
@@camdyndarksidecat7038 I agree, which I think is why people look for lactose-free or low lactose options if they want to give milk to their cats. Whether that solves the issue or not however...
As for humans and lactose intolerance, I think it is also important to consider that humans who were keeping cattle thousands of years ago were not drinking pasteurized milk (and their animals were kept in far different conditions) and thus had less exposure to lactose in the first place, especially if you consider that what we buy as milk in stores today would have been referred to as "sweet milk" by Europeans, as much milk tended to be delivered days after it had been milked and was commonly consumed as "clabber".
I also think there is a common misconception that only a select few groups of people drank milk. Although I mentioned Europe above, there are several recorded instances of milk consumption throughout human history - it was just usually fermented like yogurt or kefir. Some examples include but are not limited to: kumis (mare or donkey milk) from Mongolia, mabisi from Zambia, amasi from South Africa which I believe is based on a Zulu drink named amaswi, and gariss (camel's milk) from Sudan!

I grew up with cat's and dog's, they always got along. I had a friend that couldn't believe they got along and played together. I am more of a cat lover.
Can you explain something? We have two cats that grew up as kittens together and both are fixed. But once a month or once every couple months our boy cat Marvin goes full on aggression mode towards our girl cat (his sister from the same litter) GayGay. Biting her neck and climbing on top of her like he's trying to mount her. She yelps loud and I need to break it up then he chases her around and does it again. He eventually calms down but I hate hearing her yelp, it makes me wonder was he doing that all morning while we slept? Any advice?

What age were they fixed and how long ago. If they were fixed as adults or fairly recently the male hormones may not have switched off yet. Best bet is to ask your vet.

What I sometimes do is freeze a bottle of water and wrap it in a towel for my kitty to lay next to when shes too hot. She likes it. Maybe that's something to try? 😺
If she will let you, take a spray bottle, hold the nozzle close up against her skin, and soak her undercoat. Then wipe her face an ears with a cool, wet cloth.
If she hates this, you risk getting shredded, but it's worth a try, and it's worked on two of my cats in a row.
They can't sweat, but this gets some evaporative going.
Caveat: don't do this if the humidity is super high, but that's probably not a problem in Italy.
A marble slab, cat sized, is about 10 degrees cooler than the ambient room temp. No pad, just the cold tile to lay on. Get 2 and chill one while using the other.

I used your Stain Remover on the puke and then cleaned the area with paper towels. UNBELIEVABLE! NOT A TRACE OF PUKE, NO ODOR, AND SO EASY TO DO! I had a cat a long time ago, and at one point, she was producing very runny, and bloody stool, and we were all really confused, until I caught my little brother feeding her milk. I was not thrilled and had to explain to him that cats really can't have milk. He was pretty young at the time and meant well, but it was not a fun time for any of us.

Second, military life involves a lot of moving around and my husband being gone for long periods of time at a time. Moving around that often I know is stressful for my lynx point, Katrina. I’ve been taking your tips of building her wall tree shelves and a cat window patio and other things to make her life as happy as possible indoors. We are approaching our first move and I want to know what some good ways are to help cats when moving to a new home with us. What can I do to make the process as least stressful for her as possible? The two ways we typically travel to move are driving there ourselves and on a plane if it helps, we do however usually drive if we can, when we can so it’s also easier on our dogs. But we will be in our family car with three dogs, two kids, my husband and I, and her in her carrier. What can I do for her to make the move better for her? Thanks again!💖🐈
The main thing that will help, scent 'therapy'. Have her scent, and her favourite human's scent on a blanket in the carrier (this you set up in advance). I have a blanket that put my scent on (put it in bed with me) and then she put hers on (sleeping in the carrier without the top on). When we went to the vet, I also threw in a t-shirt of mine that I had just worn. Many suggest having the carrier out at all times so they do not freak out when they see it.
When moving house, on moving out day, have one 'locked' room where the cat has all her things (toys, food, tree, sleeping, litter). Pack up this as last thing. When arriving at new house, set up a quiet 'locked' room as it was in the old house. If she gets on well with the dogs, have the dog/s in there as well. Once unpacked, gradually introduce her to new house. Always keep inside for a minimum 2-4 weeks (depends on cat), and when introducing to outside, be with her, ideally have her on a lead.

About cats and dogs - there's a channel called Izbushka that (among oter things) has a dog and a cat living and playing together a lot. The dog also made friends with the channel's owner's daughter's (phew) cat and they are always excited to see each other and play tag
Jackson you are great and everything you say is true. I had and have cats and dogs and they always got along very well. What's more, two years ago my 15-year-old cat Benito who grew up with my she dog Mané since he was a baby (they slept and ate together from the same plate) had to be euthanized due to a bone cancer metastasis💔, my dog Mané who was 16 years old looked for him for a week and, despite taking her to the vet every day, she left herself to die 💔 for having lost her beloved feline brother. Love, love, love, love, love, Mr. Galaxy! Even though my cat is 19, he still surprises me everyday with some new stuff that's off the wall. Oliver has owned me since he was 8 weeks old. Now at 19 years old he still "parkours" at 4am, plays with and sleeps with the dog, who is ALSO 20 years old, attacks my feet from under my bed, etc. Keeping BOTH pets at weight has been my secret.

I think cats vs dogs is fun for TV. Especially when they do compete at the #1 pet and are complete opposites. I think dogs overall are hyper and stress out a cat. A person should only get both if they have enough love and time to still play with and brush their cat, the dog and/or cat is super chill, and the house can be properly decked out for the cat so it can easily get away from said dog.

I’d be curious to find out where the “cats drink milk” myth comes from. Obviously it’s been spread by pop culture (alongside the other cartoon cat food, half-eaten fish), but it’s hard to imagine it just appeared out of thin air. My hypothesis would be that farmers observed their barn cats eagerly licking up spillage after a milking (raw milk is warm and high in fat so it would probably be irresistable for a starving mouser), and since they didn’t have to clean explosive diarrhea out of a litterbox, came to the conclusion that milk was an appreciated (and, unlike meat, decently affordable) snack to give their cats. But that’s pure conjecture and I’d love to know what the real story is.
And while we’re at it, I’d also love to know the origin of the equally stubborn myth (at least in Europe) that hedgehogs of all creatures drink cow’s milk. You have not seen war until you have seen two old ladies with allotments fighting over one of them setting out milk for the hedgehogs.
Wow, I didn't know cats were crepuscular! That's one of my favorite words.... and what about using nightlights (at night) for older cats with fading vision? We have 5 cats over 10yrs and we put nightlights in every room. I hope it helps the old geezers.

Super helpful! I never give my kitty dairy because I knew that, but I am glad to know about the water! My cat rarely drinks water, but she eats wet food and rarely has dry food. I sometimes add a tad of water to the wet food, especially with this heat. She loves just laying outside in the dirt under my hosta plants! I think she actually gets cold in the a/c and ends up outside. :D I found the whole purring and eye info really interesting too. I love your channel and I especially love the suspenders with this one. :)
I give my cats mainly dry food, with some wet food at dinnertime. They like the kind with food bits in gravy. That is, they lick up all the gravy and leave the bits behind, unless they get really hungry. Sometimes I add water to the leftover bits, and they drink that. Their main water source is the blue ceramic crock and the beige plastic crock. The beige crock is most popular. Supposedly ceramic crocks can help the water stay cooler, but the cats don't seem to care about that. Same preferences, even if I swap places for the two crocks.
You got me on the cats can see in the dark myth but the others I already knew. I would Love for people to quit seeing black cats as bad luck. Black cats and Black dogs are the ones I prefer! Nothing like having black panthers and black wolves surrounding you 🥰

1:50 There are some body language "crossed wires" between cats and dogs though, such as wagging tails - signalling annoyance in cats, excitement in dogs - and holding the tail high - meaning "I see you" in Cat but "I'm the boss of you!" in Dog. Dogs are also generally larger than cats and could therefore be seen as a potentially dangerous predator by the cat.
That being said, if they're properly acclimated to each other, especially at a young age, there's no reason a cat and a dog couldn't be the best of friends.

Purring at the vet is common. My vet takes my cat to the counter by the sink & turns on the water. This causes the cat to stop purring. Then the vet can hear the heart sounds.

For context, I see posts online from friends and other places like pinterest of cats having a "great time" in the car, at the vet, etc. presumably because their faces look like this --> 😀 Sometimes they'll even say things like, "my cat loves the car so much I've decided to bring him on more car rides."

Our cats, Sam & Pippin and dog, Buddy are best friends. Buddy is very protective of them. They seep on his bed and in his crate. Once at the vet, Sam was upset and meowing. Buddy stood up to check on him and Sam saw him and relaxed.

On cats and dogs not getting along. I have a very emotional story about that. I owned a very pretty white cat named Twinkie. She got out one night and... well 😭. It was the neighbors dogs. I think cats and dogs being enemies comes from territorial disputes out in the wild. That said, Twinkie shared her home with two dogs and they were all very good friends. Dogs and cats can be friends, but cartoons see them as rivals because when these cartoons were produced cats were an outdoor animal.
I want to make clear that I try to make sure all my cats are indoor cats, and that included Twinkie. I'm not sure how she got out, but she did, and to this day I wonder if I could have done something different that would have saved her life. Life is messy and hard and unfair sometimes. I miss her.

I mean....are they nicer than Predator? They're certainly more cuddly with us than Predator, but I think a mouse might disagree. At least Predator just kills. I've seen my cat spend 30 minutes batting, biting, letting go/re-catching, and basically torturing a mouse she caught in the garage until it died of exhaustion. No slight on her, its great enrichment, but that mouse had a really bad final day on earth. I've often thought of putting a teeny tiny sign outside of my garage where I think the mice get in that says: "Abandon all hope ye who enter here."
There was a couple in my apartment building that had 2 pitt bulls and 1 cat. It was fun to see people's expressions when the dogs were being walked, and the cat followed behind them! And of course, the dogs were completely ok with a cat being 1-2 feet away from them.

Very ill cats, injured cats, or scared cats will purr to heal themselves or calm/soothe themselves. A healthy cat will also sometimes snuggle with a sick cat and purr to try to soothe the sick cat.
@@catcolb11 Makes sense based on this video. I have also heard that their purr is healing to humans. When I am stressed or not feeling well, I can always count on my female cat insisting on being in my lap and purring.

Jackson Cat Daddy, in reality, cows milk isn't really great for anybody but calves! If you get an orphaned kitten, you can get 'milk replacer' made for kittens. And cats aren't as domesticated as dogs . They tend towards dehydration if on crap, I mean dry food! As for dogs and cats, of course they get along! Often really love each other. Cats purr, I think to sooth themselves. And of course you said it! Oh, neat about the healing! It's fun to watch their pupils during play. They see movement superbly! Of course, all their senses are keen so they can hear mice in walls! And find a bug in very dark times, lol. Loved this, as usual! 👍💖💙🥰✌
