  • In this video, we're reviewing Gunstar Heroes on the Sega Genesis. Sure, it's a well-known Sega classic, but could it really be the platform's best run 'n gun game? Let's dig in and find out - you bring the power-ups, I'll bring the melon bread.

I played this again over the weekend and chose Blue just so see if it was better. For me, it was not lol. Team Red all day!

Gunstar Heroes was a game I didn't know existed at the time but heard so much on the internet I eventually had to try it, and it held up very well- I think part of it's charm to those who played it is how none of it feels like filler, every stage feels like it's got some idea so that it doesn't feel repetitive, or some unique boss, or just some very interesting presentational choice like how the boss rush has the bosses watch the battles on a monitor and gradually step in, one by one. It really manages to make a conceptually simple game feel like it's so much bigger and varied thsn it might actually be on paper.

I completely agree! It feels like a lot of effort was put in everywhere, and I can't say that about every game that came out at the time. Thanks for the comment!

Treasure's first game and it's an absolute banger

It's such a beautiful game. Really showed off what genesis had to offer.

I've been consistently surprised going back to Sega games with how well they held up and how progressive the graphics were. I owe the platform a lot of praise I didn't give it as a youth

@SayItIsntJoe the platform was always going to be overshadowed by Nintendo. The Genesis is my all time favorite retro console. It has a ton of power. I prefer Sonic over Mario. But for a lot of people the Genesis was too fast and too different so it got a lot of stick.

The moment you mentioned Chaser shot I realized that this is definitely one of the games Cuphead took inspiration from since there is the exact same weapon in that game. Now that i think about it, in both games you have 2 main characters, one red one blue, run and gun levels and boss fight levels.
Now for the weapons in Cuphead you have a button for what I suppose is fixed shot mode otherwise you play in free shot mode. In both games you can have 2 at a time tho in Cuphead you can't combine them, and aside from completely copying Chaser those other weapons sound extremely similar to Peashooter or Spread shot for Force shot, Converge for Lightning and Charge for Fire.
Gotta try Gunstar some day then, if it's half as good as Cuphead it's worth a playthrough for sure, especially if it can be played co-op.

I never played cuphead, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if some newer games took some inspiration from gunstar.

    Great video, Joe!
When this game hit, it was being sold for $30 and I played the heck out of it. The music (by Norio Hanzawa, who’s…awesome) and the frenetic gameplay with fun controls (there’s sliding, and even a strange power slide move you can use for style points, haha) make this one of my very favorite games.
Being sent back to the beginning on the dice palace is painful, yet somehow dementedly amusing. 😂

I feel like I got lucky when I played this, because I almost never got sent back to the board game beginning. The recording playthrough here is real, no backsies

Never owned a Genesis, but my best friend had one. I still never played Gunstar Heroes, we were playing Sega Sports games and Road Rash lol

My friend had a Sega which is how I first found this game, and all these years later I still remember it being fun! And melon bread. I'll never forget that.

I love Gunstar Heroes. When I play, I make it a point not to abuse the OP homing combo when I play since it takes the fun out.
Treasure games have generally stood out from a visual standpoint. I am always impressed with the pseudo 3D effects of the more polygonal bosses.
The only point I'd argue is overrated is the soundtrack. It fits the bill but it's not a take home OST like other games of its ilk.
    Solid assessment overall!

I definitely feel like I'm cheating with the weapon combo, but I mean... it's hard to resist!

    Sega's best?
...Or Treasure's best? Either way, I'm putting Alien Soldier on the table...

It was a provocative question, that's fair! And I always refer to the publisher with things like that, because I haven't played enough Treasure games to give that a fair assessment.. I probably should do more of a focus on a developer's catalog as some future content. That seems more fair. And I'll definitely check out Alien Solder!

$ for $ gunstar is a way better value then Alien Soldier and I would also argue more approachable and fun then Alien Soldier. At $188 in value that's steep for a Genesis game that is absolutely brutal. Gunstar comes in at $59 as of today and honestly would be my choice of games here. Easier to rationalize the cost.
