I've been drawing and writing my graphic novel more. I found that I came up with the outline for my story, my Mom said I made so much progress. I'm so surprised that I did more.

I wrote 100 pages of my novel last year. I am very proud since I had never written as much before, but now I don't think the book was developed enough and want to start over. I really needed this for motivation, so thank you!

My best writing days are those that I'm home alone all day, truly inspired and without distractions, able to be inside my own story!
Unfortunately, most days are not like this, since life gets in the way.
Something else that I have noticed that kills the creativity is when you're writing a story that doesn't mean anything to you and somehow you're forced to do this. This can happen to those who do this as a job. I used to write scripts for someone else. At first, I thought it's great, but then I found out that I cannot make decisions for this script. I'm glad I'm not doing this job anymore. This way I can be more creative and focused on my own stories.

I agree! The least creative time in my life was when I worked as an article writer. I tried to get myself to write my story at home, but I would just dread writing more after doing it all day. One thing that job helped me with is that now I feel comfortable just getting those words on the page. I can write a lot more per day than I used to.

Of course, every situation has its advantages! I have also learned a lot from this job. Anyway, it's pretty interesting to hear that another writer had the same problem in a similar situation. Because when this happens and you don't know why, you might start questioning yourself, like, 'Why I don't feel motivated to write this story? It's supposed that I love writing, so where's the inspiration?'.

In the editing phase for my first book, it's not too difficult😅. Trying to build promotion on tiktok and other social media too. Thinking about working on another project while doing all of this, I'm giving myself enough time to edit thoroughly. Hopefully it'll be ready in February.

I have 3 kids, and I'm a copywriter/SEO person by trade, so I have some unique challenges with writing. By the time I'm done working in copywriting for 8 hours, writing is the last thing I want to do, despite loving creative writing. It feels like writing soulless marketing material has sucked the desire from me to write. Plus, my kiddos are a handful, as you can imagine. I don't know how to find that love for writing again but it's hard.

I’ve been trying to build the habit of writing for at least one hour every night. Something I’ve found that helps me, is writing with pencil and paper. A sort of rough, rough draft. That way, when I’m ready to move into the scrivener or word document, I’ve got some kind of sense of where each chapter or sequence is going without having to think too hard about it

When I did the million word challenge in 2020 and wrote a million words and 20 books I wrote everyday and even though I had a daily word count now it's easier for me to write everyday when I have a writing project to do. Last year I wrote 6 novels and each one I averaged about 20 to 30 days of writing and did allow myself to skip a day when I needed it. But creativity and even writing is a muscle and needs to be exercised. But I like your advice that even a little time each day helps. Sometimes I pressure myself and feel obligated to spend hours and hours writing and that's where my burnout at the end of last year came in but maybe just less time but still a daily habit could help

Wonderful podcast! I’m writing my first novel and having to find bits of time around 10 hour work days. I found that making a set daily schedule helps with a segment for ‘wild card’ time if I need to run an errand or do something. If I don’t need the time it defaults to writing 😊. BTW I love your immersive writing sessions Abbie! ❤️✌️

I usually write 50K-175K words a year, although I'm looking for a video on how to publish a novel fast. I don't know if Abbie could do this, but I'd want the full guide. (Or you could create a podcast, that would be helpful too!) If you do, please put in how much it will cost, how many sales most writers get, and the basics of marketing and editing. I also wanted to know if you could include the steps to publishing? I just started writing last year and I'm ready to publish a novel. Thanks!

Caveat: I realize there are exceptions to everything, and not everyone is like me.
I have to disagree about the word count goal thing. I am the kind of person who has to have pressure to improve my writing. If I don't, then I will happily spend all day wordsmithing the perfect sentence. Ironically, this is how I write poetry, not prose. On the other hand, I have found that as the pressure builds to accomplish a long form goal, my writing improves along with my speed. I think this is related to entering the 'flow' state, which for me occurs when I am in a faster rhythm and not actively thinking about grammar or spelling, letting muscle memory take over.
Finally, I find it also easier to keep track of 'state' when I am not dividing my attention between editing and writing. I'm an ex programmer, so I think of all the different story arcs and odd facts as the 'statemachine' of the story; in programming, if something is missed then your program fails. Similarly if you miss something in your story and introduce discontinuities, the story breaks. I do my best and most complete work under pressure. Conversely, I am horrid about starting things and not finishing them if there is no tangible end date set.

I've been in AuDHD burnout for the last year, and it's the first time I haven't had a story on the go. And now I have no idea what to write. I still know how to write, even if not very well, but I can't get from the raw idea stage to the first meaningful words on the page - every time I try, it just feels like I don't know enough to start. Could you do a video on making that transition? How it feels to start writing that first draft, and which elements you know for sure, and which elements you're winging? Love your content!

    Hello Abbie,
I had an idea to write a novel for 3 years, last year I started writing but I kind of like to plan few things before hand so i don't find myself lost in between which is why i prepared a 7 page outline for my whole story. I have a job and have only 3 hours to myself to write properly. I started writing my first draft but soon enough i realised this isn't working because whenever i sit after job being exhausted, I had to first read what i wrote before and then think what should come next and then i write which usually leaves me with 1.5 hours to write. I wrote 45 pages approximately and stopped writing because i could clearly see i messed up bad. Character wise, plot wise, conflict wise, and elements were hard to keep track of. I was able to keep everything in mind until like 2 months, then i literally started losing it. So i got an Idea of how I can complete the Novel without losing track of everything. Because my Outline was Short before, and whenever i sat down to write, i was writing scenes, so i decided that I will create another outline which will be based on 3 Act Story Structure, but will be based on the scenes, I decided to write scene wise outline. This will help me keep all the elements in mind because i can write outline in 2 months or so, and because it's just an outline i can keep track of scene and story while moving ahead fast. I can also correct ad edit my outline once it's done so when i finally sit down to write my 1st Draft, it will already been worked up on. NOW.. My problem is... the reason Why I am WRITING THIS BIG PARA IN COMMENT, is because, 2 months are going to end soon and I am not even in half of my novel outline wise. I have already written 56,000 around words and it seems like my story is longer than i thought. While writing it i can see what all things are need to be edited and corrected but i first have to complete the outline before editing it halfway because then i will never be able to get to the end of my Novel. I am HELLA Scared and HELLA Exhausted and because I have no Writing Circle because until 2022 I was an actor I don't know with whom to talk!... Any advice on how to deal with this issue and complete my first draft will be Highly Appreciated. #FirstTimeNovelWriter

It sounds like putting the time pressure on yourself is stressing you out rather than motivating you.

I've hit a standstill with my book. On one hand, I have lost all direction with the chapter I am on. On another hand, I have found that what I have written (though yes it's my first draft) sounds very YA... Yet, that's not my target audience. Doesn't help that I've read a lot of YA books this year already but I digress.

For thoes who have writing as a hobby may be spending only 15 minutes to 2 hours a day on writing. I want to make it a career, and after my 10 hour dayjob. i get home and write for minimum 4 hours.
Do not look for someone eles to push you on with youre writing, think of the end goal. I had a problome when i was at the end of the mid point in my story when I was down to writing only 250 words a day. then i looked over how much i had already written, and thought how the feeling would be to manage to publish it, and see it in a bookstore. And now it is only 2 writing sessions away from editing.

Ikke fokuser på mengden ord, men på gleden av å skrive :3
Integrer skrivingen inn i livet ditt. Prøv å kvantifisere hva målet er (tidsmessig). Eksperimenter deg fram :3
    Finn en skrivevenn, eller motivator.
Lag en vane for å styrke "skrivemuskelen" og få det til å bli noe du ser fram til :3
Det er bedre med litt jevnlig, enn mye på en gang :3
