@@jovdam Yep, all these years later I've seen them 60 more times (once even in Argentina) My Daughter is in the Pit with me at shows and I'm staff at thebrpage.net
Great. Now if Flipside would just release The Exploited show, which Bad Religion were opening for that night, which is equally amazing, we'd be all set. Don't know why they're holding that footage hostage. You can get the show on punktorrents, or at least you could a couple of years ago, not sure about now. They should have put it on the dvd with this show that they released back in the day. Same goes with all the Another State of Mind footage that's being kept in a vault somewhere, there's TONS of awesome stuff we could be seeing that is just collecting dust.
Bad Religion was my first concert. It was my 12th birthday - that night really crystallized a love of underground music that burns inside me to this day. The highlight was crowd surfing during "We're Only Gonna Die". Saw 'em again more recently (around the time New Maps came out) and while it wasn't quite as great, they still put on a hell of a show.
Heard about this concert footage from Greg Graffin’s book, Punk Paradox. Interesting read, and it’s fun learning some of the background on this time period for the band.
7:35 : a gunshot rings! Graffin mentions that a killing occurred that night in his new book; Punk Paradox (page 230). I am pretty sure it happened right there and then
havent read punk paradox yet but watched this vid so many times over the years.. always though it was a joke about the gunshots.. thought it was just a shitty amp set up or someone knocking the mics.. i need to read the book.. thanks for the info man
Almost 60 now.. 1980 San Diego punk ... Nothing can compare to those days.. I take my big kids to shows still tsol, adolescents, circle jerks, bad religion!!! ❤
having access to the stage back then was a part of the show........being up front is the only way to see BR........I've been lucky enough to be up front everytime I've seen them
I to saw them in this days at a VFW hall in Phoenix Az. My first punk show, and I was nervous due to some skinsheads. But all was peaceful mix of Hispanics “me” and the gringos.
Awesome that's how it was. I was at every Olympic show in 83 and 84 a I left for Amsterdam soon after that . Last show for me was Subhumans with dick lucas. May have been same show subhumans headlining don't still have the flyer Everyone would show up . All the bands, unknown soon to be Hollywood stars, EVERYONE!!!!!! From Beverly hills to East Los , Tujunga to El monte. Even the OC boys would show. Casey was always there. Great great times and shows. Louis E probably filmed this. Bad Religions best time early 80sIm the guy at 1.20 with the flannel around his waste was 18 then and trust me could beat the shit out of 90 percent of people there but usually didn't have to..Was also in another state of mind a couple o times Great times Funny thing about bad religion is they were from the valley which was supposed to be uncool. They wernt from the beach or orange county and yet they made it bigger than any of those bands. Looks like greg hetson from circle jerks on guitar
i was at that Subhumans show as well! i remember absolutely slamming so hard. was hurting a lot the next day. I recently bought "from the cradle to the grave" but Bad Religion was better than the Subhumans. I figured it out at the time
That guy in the orange shirt who's just standing on stage admiring the view for a while then gets pushed off stage when he totally unexpected it 😂 (just after the 12 minute mark) love watching the old BR vids....mainly because I prefer their older stuff and there's the rawness and the energy....Greg doesn't push his voice much these days ....it's all just a lot tamer.
Ivan MDC Totally agree! 100% They were my first "favourite band" and they remain one of the bands I listen to most to this day, over 20 years later! They just have that magic mysterious factor that you can't exactly put your finger on, that's the beauty of them. Always important and relevant to me, as a kid AND as an adult! Long live Greg, Brett and BAD RELIGION! Davey in Éire (Ireland) :)
this show is crazy..kids looks having fun there! the stage is nothing but kids jump and jump :D wonder if Bad Religion have this size of stage today..would it still be a crazy crowd?
yeah they play to 5000 people crowds in proper sold out venues nowadays except the people there in those shows 95% are all standing there filming and only 5% are slamming. Not like the old days where 200 people in a small hall would go wild and leap on each other no cameras, phones nothing.
back then punkers didn't wear so much accessories or chains and shit some did not the majority that made it nice i think, now their all dressed like aliens
that's because this was hardcore punk. we were from all walks of life. I was at this show and I was from a nice upper middle class family. i fricking loved it and slam danced my way to a lot of bruises.
WOW, a bunch of G.B.H. t-shirts at a bad religion concert, i hope greg, gets a clue to sound like G.B.H. in their new album called SUFFER, oh well go back to the past to change the future,...........marius(punk rules).
There were still some great hardcore bands and releases after '84 (think Youth Of Today among others) but yeah HC got lame in the late 80's especially with all this br00tal breakdown jockish bullshit.
I like how random fans where getting on stage and dancing. That wouldn't fly today. B&R would like this song is called. ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE ME A FUCKING HART ATACK ! 😫
I'd say by 85 it was dead...bands either went the crossover route or started playing like Fugazi. By the late 80's it had morphed into beefcake jock bullshit. Early 90's pop punk seemed to me at the time as a direct reaction to that shit.
Yep. ‘84 is when it all went to shit. There were still a small handful of decent bands, but mostly it all started turning into macho metal light speed thrashcore. I hung out for maybe another year and tried to make the most of it, but by fall ‘85 I was done. After that I went off into my own weird little world of early 60’s free jazz and 70’s krautrock.
I was there. was 18 at the time. I am 56 now. Still look back on those times as probably the best times of my life.
Did you hear the gunshot when you were there?
I was there at 12 years old. Im with you brother, best days of my life

This guy is one of the greatest singers in punk rock
Kurt cobain is better though
And now we are in our 50s-early 60 but in our heads we're still in 1984! 😅
This is one of the best videos on UA-cam.
Agreed
The backbone of this is a 10 minute ep that is fucken epic. Every tune.
Love hearing the Back To The Known songs with the old lyrics.

Even better in the late 70s
I was there, one of the best times of my life.

Greg is very talented with melodies from a young age
Heard about this concert footage from Greg Graffin’s book, Punk Paradox.
Interesting read, and it’s fun learning some of the background on this time period for the band.
This is amazing!!! Still the Best band in the world 35 years later. BAD religion are my heros!!

i was at this show. i think GBH headlined. skinheads vs the metal guys. a pitched battle was going on
What about the gunshot at 14:53? I guess the guitarist says "someone gets killed every night" lol
I read about this performance while reading Graffin’s memoirs. Pretty amazing

Lucky bastard! 😉
Great show! I just read about it in Greggs books. Unfortunately a kid was shot after they left the stage.
I was at this show and a shit load of other shows at the Olympic.
Really cool. Greg and Jello are the greatest lyricists of Hardcore, it's cool to see Bad Religion plying the trade so young.
Thank you, whoever uploaded this. I've never seen them so young. As a kid in L.A., I didn't know about them until around '87 or '88
I love this early years BR.
Bring me the wankers that hit thumbs down on this surviving 34 year old video.
one of the best bands ever!
This was their best era. Including Into the Unknown. Wish the EP was an LP though and that this line up adding Brett back continued on. It's too short
I'm super impressed with the sound and video quality here! I have such a crush on Greg. He still looks great...I'd marry him in a second.
So badass! I would've gave my left nut to be at this concert. Oh wait, I wasn't even born yet.
Also, holy shit! 14:48 and 15:11 gun shots?
yeah crips and bloods from the streets would come to punk shows, crazy right, I couldn't believe those trolls would actually dig punk music
the bass player is Tim Gallegos, jay returns in 1986
This is so fucking good.
So much fun! Perfect Kaos!
Very awesome time capsule
Gregs voice is pretty banging, wonder why he stopped singing so deeply.
todd ballantine No control is thee best Greg I think so. Next to How Could He'll Be Any Worse
I think cuz the whole genre is a melodic harmony sort of situation

great audience
Greg missed almost every word on Along the Way
I was 9 in 1984. I never saw them. But I imagined I did.
Along the way used to have a fast part? Sounds great
Ah the good old days when everyone skanked instead of tried to deck the fuck out of each other in the pit...
When hardcore was punk instead of metal
The good ole days before rules and front stage security at shows, man i want to go back to the 80s.
His vocals are really coming of age here after their first full album or two
Greg wanted to punch every single dude that got on the stage, and I dont blame him. 😂
I remember when Heston auditioned and Bad Religion was losing a lot of popularity at the time. Heston really saved this band.
