  • Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Pacific Rim (2013). Kaijus and massive mechas what more can we ask for!? Guillermo del Toro had one task and he delivered. Pacific Rim is lots of action, style and fun wrapped into a film. It hits the target for what it was trying to do and it's so freakin' entertaining.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, "Pacific Rim" (2013) transports us to a future Earth on the brink of annihilation, where humanity's only hope lies in the massive Jaeger mechas piloted by skilled warriors.
We loved the jaeger's design. Gipsy Danger, Chemo Alpha, crimson Typhoon and Striker Eureka all looked sick!
It was so much fun to see this film nod to classic monster movies. The themes of teamwork and sacrifice, combined with the epic battles between giant robots and monsters make this film an enjoyable experience for any kaiju/monster flick fan!
This film does an excellent job at giving us the right amount of epic battles as we explore the intricate world of Pacific Rim.

14:20 would you be surprised to know that this guy right here, Rob Kazinsky, was one of the Dwarfs in The Hobbit...is what i wanted to say, but and then I looked it up to find how to spell his name for this comment, and found out he left the production. He's in BTS for the scenes in Bilbo's house, but turns out he left and they replaced him with Dean O'Gorman who, despite looking nothing like Rob, somehow looks just like Rob when in full Dwarf makeup. its really weird. But a little known useless fact. I'll always know Rob as being Sean Slater in British TV soap Eastenders.

Give it to one kind of director, they would have said "We have giant monsters, we have giant robots. . . but is has to be IMPORTANT, there needs to be a MESSAGE, it has to be ABOUT something," and they would have sucked all the fun out of it. Give it to another kind of director, they would have said "We've got giant robots, we've got giant monsters. . . fuck it, we're good!" and it would have been just bland and forgettable. Del Toro looked at it and said "We've got giant robots, we've got giant monsters. . . we need THE BEST giant robots and THE BEST giant monsters anyone has ever seen," and gave it not just awesome spectacle, but real heart.

Fun little point about the sword Gypsy Danger uses, and why it was used so infrequently despite its effectiveness. In the opening its alluded to that Kaiju blood is incredibly toxic and dangerous to the enviromnent. So Jaegers largely used blunt/cauterizing weapons so minimise the longstanding collateral damage that could come from having Kaiju guts splattered across an entire city. When Gypsy uses the sword, its only in the most dire scenarios as a last resort (In Space/deep underwater at the breach)

@@Zankaroo Possibly, but it wasn't even a baby; it was apparently still quite premature. And it seemed to eat more like a duck or frog, ie. with a focus on getting the thing being eaten down its throat, not necessarily in any number of pieces. If we're going to get into the weeds a bit on it, while remembering this is a kaiju movie, incisors allow the concentration of force onto a very narrow surface, allowing it to cleave. The level of force applied drops really fast the more that surface of interaction is expanded. You drop a bowling-ball on your foot, it's going to hurt; you attach a blade to the bottom of that ball, and you're losing whatever it hits.
And, of course, this is Ron Perlman playing Hannibal Chau, so, y'know; plot armor. And the thing generally looked real squishy, so it may have been more like being bashed between two waterbed mattresses. But your point is still a fair one, and fun to consider.

It’s not just size in terms of physical dimensions, but sheer weight. Pacific Rim’s kaiju are lightweights compared to most of Godzilla’s incarnations, only weighing a couple thousand tons while Godzilla is typically upwards of 20k. Without any adjustment between the two universes, I’d imagine the only edge the Pacific Rim kaiju would have against him would be speed or something like Otachi’s acid, but none of their physical blows would carry enough weight to effectively do anything. It’d be like punching Superman as a normal dude.

Saw this in IMAX 3d when it first released. Was so awestruck I walked out of the theater and bought another ticket to go see it again. XD. I’ve yet to see another film that captures scale as well as this movie, and I think it has to do with how things move. The inertia of massive objects is so hard to truly capture on film because small things don’t follow the same movement arcs as large things and you can usually tell when something’s a miniature because of this lack of inertia. Del Toro managed to get it right, and it works so well!

I find it interesting to compare this film to the Monsterverse movies, especially the first three. Those movies are told from the perspective of humans "looking up" at the giant monsters, which makes us feel very small and helpless against them. Pacific Rim uses the Jaegers to scale us humans up to the monsters' level, empowering us to literally look them eye-to-eye. As Raleigh says, "In a Jaeger you can fight the hurricane. You can win."

So Marshal Stacker Pentecost is the only other pilot to operate a Jaeger solo. He was one of the pilots of Coyote Tango, a Mk I Jaeger, and as you heard, the Mk I's were rushed into production to combat the imminent threat, and so they did not have adequate reactor shielding. Both he and his co-pilot were exposed to some severe radiation, and during their fight with Onibaba (the kaiju that was chasing little Mako), Pentecost's co-pilot blacked out from radiation poisoning, leaving him to defeat the monster alone, which he did, but at a terrible cost. His body was severely weakened by the radiation and the strain of piloting solo, which is why he said that if he went in one again, that'd be the last time he did.
Also, when Charlie Day drifted with that bit of brain, he learned they're a hive mind... and that connection goes both ways. The Precursors took knowledge of Earth animals from him, which is why the next two kaiju they made are not actually sea creatures: Leatherback (the gorilla), and Otachi (the flyer). They'd also gained knowledge of how the Jaegers worked from him, which is why the EMP and acid abilities are such potent weapons against them.
If you like this type of mecha, you'd LOVE The Big O, an anime that is half film-noir, half rock'em-sock'em robot monster fighting, with a very heavy Batman: The Animated series art influence. TOP tier anime, highly recommend, best episode is definitely the one with the fight between Big O and Big Duo.

one of the major things I liked about this movie was how, during the fights or just how the jaegers and kaiju move. you can FEEl the weight of it all. each impact, the straining of metal, the cracking of concrete etc. you can just feel how big and heavy these giants are.
also love how kinda thought out it was. (maybe I'm over analyzing) but notice how the jaegers started failing after Gypsy danger fell. cause they kaiju learned that they need to target the cockpit. which is when the jaegers started failing.
then. the only jaegers who were left were jaegers who left were the ones who were incredibly unique. cherno alpha (the russian one) actually lacked a head. and its body was HEAVILY armoured. making it hard to get into the cockpit. Crimson (the chinese one) has 3 arms, making him unique and different. he's fast, and far more different than many jaegers. And of course. Striker eureka, he's new, with anti kaiju missles, and faster than most of the jaegers, so the kaiju hadn't adapted yet.
but then. in hong kong, cause of newt, the kaiju were specific to go against the remaining jaegers. otatchi, with the clawed tail, that let it counter crimson's 3 arms. and it's acid to rip through cherno's armour. also, the wings, cause no jaeger can fly. (also able to give birth to bring new kaiju into the fray if otatchi lived)
while also, leatherback, a large tanky kaiju. able to match cherno's strength and brawler style of fighting and also the weight class. while cherno was nuclear, leatherback could likely still match him in a physical fight. while also the emp to go against Striker's electricity and also (if crimson survived when leatherback arrived), to effect crimson's electric power as well.
then slattern (the hammer head and tentacles one) was more sea creature based than above water combat. which makes sense if they wanted him to only defend the breach. along with raiju (the crocodile with the split head) being a fast swimmer. (scunner is one I'm not so sure about though. he was tanky. maybe the precusers planned to keep scunner as backup, so it would be raijin's speed and scunners strength.
(slightly fun yet morbid fact about cherno alpha. there was NO ESCAPE POD built into him. meaning. if the jaeger was to die, so would the pilots. going down with their jaeger)

notice how it went for gypsy's body first? but it noticed despite being stabbed the through chest and an arm being lost. gypsy was still standing. so it went for the head. (it was first fighting as if it was fighting another animal. the head is a small target, but most creatures die if you go for the body.)

@@halfknight2310 ohhh right I forgot they are hivemind and not just clones. I am surprised they didn’t start trying it earlier(not complaining as that would’ve been very bad for humanity lol) since the most effective animals try to aim for the throat/neck. Was knifehead bred for a specific purpose like leatherback and the others? Have a flesh knife doesn’t seem like it would be useful if they thought Jeagers were like other animals, my guess is that when the guy drifted with a brain they at least learned Jeagers were machines and could break a lot more easily with pointy weapons rather than blunt force like its predecessors

    • @halfknight2310
      @halfknight2310 12 днів тому

@@senzanome7302 my guess for knife head. No. Seems like most before this. They were sending out test runs. To see which Kaiju would be best suited for combat against the humans.
Also. They have targets the head before. (It’s how stacker ended up having to fight solo. If I recall onibaba, the crab, had knocked against the con pod. Knocking out his co pilot.) but it seems they figured the body would be were the main areas would be.
I think they knew the jaegers were machines. They likely were simply basing their Kaiju to the predators and animals of earth. (Knife head is based on a goblin shark. Who has a similar head) but they likely thought that the most logical place to put the pilots was the chest. Instead of the head. (It’s like gundum logic. The head is just a decor.) but that’s just my guess.
Maybe cause the jaegers stand upright, the head is further up. And a smaller target. And since kaju are meant to be weapons. They went for the second best option. The chest. But that’s just a theory.
But it’s hard to tell though.
As for newt. He likely accidentally sent them what the remaining jaegers were capable off. So it’s the precursors sent Otachi and leatherback. Who Were both specific to Crimson typhoon, cherno and striker.

Important info- The reason why Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and Stryker Eureka were taken down so easily because of Newt drifting with the kaiju brain. Since the neural link is connected both ways the kaiju master's learned the weaknesses of the Jaegers and made Kaiju's specifically to kill them such as Crimson Typhoon having vulnerable head hence taken down by tail claw, Cherno Alpha by acid melting and Stryker Eureka by EMP blast since its a digital machine.

In the novelization, it's said the brain power it takes to pilot a Jaeger solo is so severe that you have to focus on controlling normally involuntarily bodily functions.
Like imagine piloting the Jaeger to shore and on top of controlling, walking and balancing a massive swaying giant robot, you have to remember to breathe and will your heart to beat.
Also, you notice the Kaiju began to adapt to the Jaegers and humanity. They got bigger of course, but they also say... developed a hardened horn to punch through armor or walls.
Or fly over walls to give birth deep inland. Or disable the electrically powered Jaegers after the nuclear powered ones were destroyed or decommissioned.
Jaeger pilots were also selected based on close familiar ties to give the best results for drift compatibility, which is why so many of them were siblings or parent and child. With twins/triplets be the best case scenario.
Which just goes to show how strong the bond is with Raleigh and Mako and the Kaidonovskys (who were married).
I highly recommend reading the lore and watching the BTS and making of Pacific Rim.
But I cannot reccomend the sequel. While the first film was very clearly a passion project made by people who love the Mecha and Kaiju genre, the second film was very clearly not so.

My friend went to see it and when I asked him if he thought I'd like it he said, "Dude, you'll be kicking yourself if you wait. Go watch it today." I went later that day, and he was completely 100% right.

I forgot the sites but when this movies comes out they have site that give us the lore of each Jaeger. For ex. Cherno Alpha might be the oldest but he was one of the baddest. Cherno Alpha doesnt have escape pod. So everytime they go to fight Kaiju. The pilot was ready to die. Bcs its was either win or die for them. No escape.

I am massive kaiju jaeger movie fans, I really like that cockpit scene where the two jaeger pilots enter and then the head part of the Jaeger slide down to the main body, it feels like watching Japanese anime movie but in real time, Love the gypsy danger design , but my favorite is always Striker Eureka 😊😊

The fact that it took two category 4 Kaijus attacking simultaneously to take down Cherno Alpha while it was already damaged by the Acid says how true of a Badass Cherno was.
All other advanced Jaegers had similar basic structure such as the pilot cockpit being inside the head of the Jaeger. So the Kaijus knew specifically to target the heads.
But Cherno on other hand doesn't really have an actual head. The top part of it was actually covered by the reactor cooling fans. The pilots were kind of in the chest area.
And since Chenro was the strongest and heaviest of all Jaegers, no physically damaging hit like claw strike or punch would affect it much. So that's why they had to use Acid to destroy the armour and then just simply drown the pilots in the water.

One of my favourite ideas in this movie is that the "drift", as originally described, basically weaponizes friendship. Makes humanity's arguably-strongest and -most-species-defining asset, ie. our ability to empathize and co-operate, into a direct and unitary method of combat.
I think that's a concept that could be very interesting to explore further.

I like that this movie apply the rule of “show, not tell”
The reason cherno alpha and crimson typhoon lose so easily because the two kaijus they fought was their counter. Cherno has thick armor so normal attack cannot really damage it, but acid can melt it. Meanwhile, typhoon is agile and strong in close quarter combat, that’s why otachi use the tail so it can strike from distance. Not to mention the gorilla kaiju has emp to counter striker eureka.
And all the reason for this is because newt made a connection with kaiju brain. The alien knows what the weakness of the jaeger

I personally love that they didn’t do the expected heroes kiss at the end. Whether you ship Mako and Raleigh or not, there’s no need for that overt physical declaration of love (platonic or romantic), because they were in each others heads. Like Chuck said to his father: No need to say anything, I know.

ah Pacific Rim, I remember watching this and was just so amazed, you can really feel that these Jaegers are so heavy to pilot, it really adds more realism to it. Really love all the Jaeger design from Gypsy danger, Striker Eureka, Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha...even the old Mark - 1 Jaeger that Stakcer Pentecost used to be a pilot of , the Coyote Tango.
