However he was not charged for the other 10 murders due to the statues of limitation. He was only charged for the murder of his sister in law I believe.
Interesting note about the movie title : In Korean, there are 2 words for 'memory', which are gi-eok and chu-eok. Gi-eok means memory but without any negative nor positive connotations. It is neutral, just a straightforward word for memory. Chu-eok, however, means fond memory, or cherished memory. And Bong used the word for fond memory in the title. So it is not 'Memories of Murder' but 'Fond Memories of Murder'. Therefore, it gets lost in translation but the original Korean title sets up an oxymoron immediately and makes us wonder, How can a murder be a fond memory? Maybe for the murderer, but how so for everyone else? What did Bong intend by it? This movie has been my favorite for 10 years now and I still ponder on that sometimes.
I always feel like this story is much more than about the murders, it harkens back to the nostalgia of what it was like living in Korea in the 80s - the hot summers, the countries large-scale industrialization, the riots - it was a very peculiar climate to live in
@@victormeas7898 Absolutely agree, I feel that too! The golden fields particularly make us feel that nostalgia. Tied to your comment, I also think the movie was a commentary on life/society in Korea. The murder seemed to be a shift between old Korean society in which everything is 'personal' represented by the small town detective (everyone trusts each other and neighbors are like family, but this leads to an underbelly of cruelty and inaccuracy) and the new Korean society in which everything is 'professional/modern' represented by the Seoul capital city detective (everyone is a stranger, someone to be on guard against at least at first, but things are kept more fair, correct, and efficient). The fact that anyone "ordinary" (as this girl says) could be a serial killer really shatters that default human affection, called 'jeong' (정) in Korea, that Korean society is known for.
Let me tell y'all something...the first time I watched this movie- this ending scene gave me CHILLS all over my body, and then I instantly started crying. No film has ever made me react like this ever. Truly a masterpiece.
@@jereflipz6616 Absolutely! English isn't my first language either, so hopefully I explained it well. The ending scene is set a couple years later after the murders happened. The detective (the guy in this video) went back to the murder scene, because he still doesn't understand how they haven't catched the guy who did the murders yet. While looking there, he's approached by a stranger, a curious little girl who asks him what he's doing there. After a bit of talking, she reveals that there was another guy looking down there just like the detective. The detective is now curious and asks her how this other guy looks like (suspecting that that's probably the murderer/killer) and she replies that he was just an ordinary guy who looked just like any other guy. Basically implying that anyone could've been the killer, and that's what makes this world scary. Which is why, at the ending scene he suddenly looks at the camera, and he looks at US. He's looking at the AUDIENCE. Because If the killer was just some regular guy, he could be our friend, he could be our cousin, or he...could be watching this movie right now.
For South Koreans, this film is a special and sad story. This murder actually happened in 1986-1991. A lot of police tried, but failed, and thousands of people kept tracking the criminal. The film was released in 2003. In 2019 we finally found a killer
@@stephanlang2267 I still don't believe it's the real killer. The one depicted in this movie was meticulous when he killed. And yet he was arrested for killing his sister in law. That one is a copy cat or those people who claim crimes.
Parasite is indeed an inferior movie compared to Memories of Murder. And don't get me wrong, I think Parasite deserves all the praise it has received, what bothers me is that there's a lot a people talking about it and his director like its some kind of revelation, now that the media is looking and actually paying attention, for whatever reason. Bong Jon Hoo is certainly enjoying such levels of exposition, and after so many years of brillant work he surely deserves it, but come on! He's been doing it for over 20 years now and people are just starting to notice just because Parasite was nominated for the Oscars. Parasite is not Bong Jon Ho's masterpiece and I'm pretty sure it won't win the big prize... Ijust hope that all this hype surrounding Parasite doesn't stop there so people can get to really know this director
A 56 year-old prime suspect has been imprisoned for 24 years after recieving a life sentence for raping and killing his wife's younger sister in 1994. A new DNA profiling technique has made identification of murderer's DNA from old evidences of 3 murders out of 9. Prison guards said he was quiet and even a model prisoner. But he is denying everything now and he will not be charged because the statute of limitations expired in 2006. He was born and raised in Hwa-seong city. 6 of the 9 murders took place within a 3-km radius of his former home. Model prisoners serving a life sentence could be possibly freed on parole after at least 20 year-imprisonment. Police is waiting for another DNA tests' results and keep questioning him. I heard that a retired detective squad chief in charge of this case in the past cried when he heard of this news.
@@123rebelguy His name is Lee Choon Jae and he was already arrested for a different unrealted murder he did a while back but he can't be trialed on the Hwaseong murders because the statue of limitations has already expired on all of them
Apparently that last glance at the camera was supposed to be for the killer. Knowing that fact, that scene for me especially elevated the moment. Just goosebumps everywhere.
Sharath SH from a directorial stand point, it is not directed at the killer. Its a very colloquial 4th-wall-breaking tool used here to identify with the audience and communicate the situation in which the detective finds himself during this scene.
The last shot of this film will haunt haunt me forever. Song Kang-Ho's stare THROUGH the camera directly into my soul is immensely powerful. What an ending.
It was revealed that the real life murderer watched this film three times. So in the end when the detective stares directly into the lens, he was staring into the eyes of the real murderer.
Luis Guns I was thinking the exact same thing, the detective from Seoul (Suh Tae-yoon) was also obsessed by catching the killer so it also might have been him coming back. But from halfway to the end of the movie there's a huge accent on suspect Park Hyung-gyu so a lot of people will think it was him... Or the killer was someone who escaped the investigation and will be unknown forever... Still, the movie is a true masterpiece. The story has been put together so well that I really feel sympathy for the caracters and the acting and choice of music deserves the highest rewards!
3:09 This bit here is why this movie, the actor and the director are so brilliant. When we construct images and review memories in our brain, what we do is we aren't necesarily -looking- at something, we may visualize them but different parts of our brain activate and our eyes react to it, which is why when we're thinking and explaining something on the fly we move our eyes like that. Just imagine what was going through the character's head at that moment.
Lee Choon-Jae was arrested for the rape and murder of his sister in law almost 10 years before this movie came out (1994). He has recently confessed to 14 murders and and 30 other sex crimes. His DNA matched 4 of the victims. He couldn't be convicted due to the statute of limitation on murder at the time but he is currently incarcerated.
I truly believe Song Kang-ho is the best living actor. Such wide span of emotions transmitted in a way I forget I am watching a movie. He's the Cassavetes ideal for an actor - resembling and not playing simple human being.
When I finished watching this movie, my internet was down for 2 days. When the ending scenes appeared, I thought the killer would finally be revealed, but it didn’t happen even after the movie was over. I was seriously desperate to know what happened next-who the killer was. Since the internet wasn't available, I couldn’t watch any explanation videos or check for updates online. I was frustrated and couldn’t sleep for that days. I even tried rewatching the movie and took screenshots of some of the killer’s body gestures as shown in the movie. I compared the killer’s hand image with the suspects'. Two days later, when the internet came back, I rushed to my computer, searched for the movie, and discovered that the killer wasn't revealed because the film's writer didn’t even know who it was. Then I found out that the real-life killer was caught and revealed after a couple of decades of the movie being released. It was one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life.
It's crazy that they found the killer after almost 35 years since the first incident. The ending of this movie really shook me and struck me as brilliant in the sense that the Real Life Killer would actually watch this film. It's also amazing because of how Park stares into the crowd as if he's using his "shaman eyes" as if he is scanning the film's audience to find the killer
I absolutely love this movie. The protagonist's acting, especially in this scene is just amazing like the way he looks at the audience (and probably the real killer who could be watching the movie)
Lee also remembered watching Memories of Murder while in prison. “I felt nothing while watching it. I just saw it as a movie,” he said. “The Hwaseong serial killings were never really on my mind and I seldom linked myself to them in my thoughts.” That’s how serial killer thoughts about this movie.
Just had my annual re-watch of this movie. This scene is so immensely powerful. Every time I watch it, I get overpowered with emotion. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Incredible ending. They used the final frame of this movie to put a moment of fear and anxiety into the heart of the killer, who undoubtedly would be watching the film if they were still around. Powerful.
Parasite kind of bummed me out. The people in it are so needy. I live in Asia. People acting needy is like a thousand year old habit. The folks in Parasite needed to get off that fucking angle.
On 18 September 2019, police announced that a man in his 50s had been identified as a suspect in the serial murders. He was identified after DNA from the underwear of one of the victims was matched with his, but he can't be prosecuted because the statute of limitations has expired. As of 2019, the suspect is in prison for a "similar crime."

Bong Joon Ho is a creative genius and a master. The powerful message and the guilt trip to the serial killer. Basically, the title summarizes it all. I just discovered he has this investigation film so I watched it now 2023. I watched a lot of crime and investigation films because that's one of my fav. genre and all that I can say is just this is freaking genius.
In 2:38, you could see an emotion in there. Before asking the question, it's as if he was reluctant to ask. He looked to the side, kinda took a breath a bit, as if a breath of a man who was tired of it all, but asks anyway. That moment looked to me as if the then-retired detective had finally put the case behind him, forever regretting that they never solved it. He didn't want to ask the girl because he knew that the lead she'll give might just end up along with the rest of dead leads they piled up. But then, he asked her anyway, as if hearing a child's excuse heard over and over again. He didn't want to ask because he was done with the case, BUT deep inside wanted to find the truth. A lost passion, if you will. He was drawn back, and upon hearing her answer, he looks at the camera as if he's telling us that the case is back on.
This film realy was a crime drama masterpiece in the purist rawest of forms that only Korea (or Asian cinema) could really make like this. I haven't seen a good film like this in a while. Fucking brilliantly underrated. And I love it how they don't explain the ending and the specific metaphors of the story. So good this film was it was simply cleverly great in its own right and the cinematography was brilliant. Love it.

that's it, that's the last time i watch a movie like that, i couldn't get it out of my head for 2 weeks straight, i literally had 2 dreams about it. but still it's one of the best movies i've ever seen.
The Murder finally caught from police and DNA matched after 33 years. The murder finally admitted all his fault and crime. The murder Lee Chun Jae killed at least 15 women when he was 23 years old and now he turned to 56 years old man in prison. The Murder Lee Chun Jae watched "Memories of Murder" with his prisoners every Saturday 7pm at least three times in the past. Prisoner said "I feel very shocked, terrified and creepy that I watched "Memories of Murder" with Lee Chun Jae. Recently, Lee Chun Jae put in solitary confinement from Busan prison had life imprisonment because he murdered wife's younger sister in 1994 January.
It isn't just about how the movie felt the necessity to depict the real events, it's about how Joon -Do wanted to send a real message to the people who watch the movie. The last gaze at the camera shows that it wasn't just a movie, it was a real threat to the killer, making him understand " You're not watching us, we're watching you. " This scene, is my personal favorite one and surely one of the best scene of cinema's history.
Dude, I'm not gonna lie. This ending gave me chills... I can't imagine the extreme levels of frustration that detective may have felt at that moment...
The director said he knew the criminal would come to watch his film and laugh at how he was never caught. So the eyes are us looking at the criminal. We still have not forgotten. We see you. Very powerful message.

Let me tell y'all something...the first time I watched this movie- this ending scene gave me CHILLS all over my body, and then I instantly started crying. No film has ever made me react like this ever. Truly a masterpiece.
Hello Im German, could you please explain me the End I dont get it sorry could u explain?
@@jereflipz6616
Absolutely!
@@toomessy ahh I understand, thank you so much!

For South Koreans, this film is a special and sad story. This murder actually happened in 1986-1991. A lot of police tried, but failed, and thousands of people kept tracking the criminal. The film was released in 2003. In 2019 we finally found a killer
The killer Was in jail since 1994 for the murder of his sister in law
@@stephanlang2267 I still don't believe it's the real killer. The one depicted in this movie was meticulous when he killed. And yet he was arrested for killing his sister in law. That one is a copy cat or those people who claim crimes.

You all need to see PARASITE. It is another masterpiece . It might win the Oscar's this year.
i hope so
Parasite is shit and overrated af compared to this
Parasite is indeed an inferior movie compared to Memories of Murder.
Spoiler: It didn't
They did won 🍫
Coming here after news that the Hwaseong serial murderer was identified.
:O what ?
Seriously incredible news. nearly had a heart attack reading the headline
any links?

Apparently that last glance at the camera was supposed to be for the killer. Knowing that fact, that scene for me especially elevated the moment. Just goosebumps everywhere.
Sharath SH from a directorial stand point, it is not directed at the killer. Its a very colloquial 4th-wall-breaking tool used here to identify with the audience and communicate the situation in which the detective finds himself during this scene.
er it can be both those things you know...there are tons of 'art house' films that break the 4th wall. 400 blows much?
The last shot of this film will haunt haunt me forever. Song Kang-Ho's stare THROUGH the camera directly into my soul is immensely powerful. What an ending.
this is probably my favorite movie ending of all time. like i could not think of a more perfect ending
just the ending itself is masterpeiece.
Same .. maybe ending from I saw the devil could be in the same tier
Mother movie ending is also very good
best ending I've ever seen
It was revealed that the real life murderer watched this film three times. So in the end when the detective stares directly into the lens, he was staring into the eyes of the real murderer.
His stare still give my chills...
One of the best Korean movies ever made.
The best scene in the history of cinema, one of the rare times that cinema touches our soul
The killer will always return to the scene of the crime.
Maybe the killer watch every day this video ;)
Luis Guns
Well this guy's a former detective and he did something there and now he's back....
Conservativ89 He was not on this scene( Soeul)

3:09 This bit here is why this movie, the actor and the director are so brilliant. When we construct images and review memories in our brain, what we do is we aren't necesarily -looking- at something, we may visualize them but different parts of our brain activate and our eyes react to it, which is why when we're thinking and explaining something on the fly we move our eyes like that. Just imagine what was going through the character's head at that moment.
a great masterpiece deserve a lot of appreciation

His DNA matched 4 of the victims. He couldn't be convicted due to the statute of limitation on murder at the time but he is currently incarcerated.

I truly believe Song Kang-ho is the best living actor. Such wide span of emotions transmitted in a way I forget I am watching a movie. He's the Cassavetes ideal for an actor - resembling and not playing simple human being.

Truly a class apart.

마지막 송강호가 관객을 쳐다보는 장면은 영화 사상 최고의 장면이 아닐까...
This ending always gives me the chills as he looks down there again, and everything is just quiet as the camera slowly zooms.
I absolutely love this movie. The protagonist's acting, especially in this scene is just amazing like the way he looks at the audience (and probably the real killer who could be watching the movie)
Oscar! RESPECT!!!
This scene is so quiet but extraordinarily intense. Just as powerful when I rewatch it as it was the first time. Brilliant acting and camera work.
Lee also remembered watching Memories of Murder while in prison. “I felt nothing while watching it. I just saw it as a movie,” he said.
“The Hwaseong serial killings were never really on my mind and I seldom linked myself to them in my thoughts.”
That’s how serial killer thoughts about this movie.
I assume by then his memories were a cluster considering that he's done way more than that.
This was the best part of the film. Literal chills, I can't think of any way to end this other than that final direct look.

Love it.
