When the episode started and you guys were talking about they may kiss this episode lol you weren’t ready for the absolute chaos and breakdown of their relationship great reaction
This was Dex’s rock bottom. From Emma’s POV, there’s only so much you can take before you have to walk away and let him figure it out himself. I really think she trie to be supportive after his mom died but sometimes you gotta put yourself first.
She really does put him down quite a lot as a self-defense mechanism. Definitely not defending the way he unloads this on her and the way he acts through this episode but she really has judged him and mocked him and belittled him even if it was "jokey" - and he has a right to call it out, just not like this and not after being such a dick. I feel like they needed to have this fight to hit that rock bottom and make changes - she needed to call him out for being an asshole and for losing himself and he needed to call her out on being judgmental and wasting her potential. I mean I feel like he's more of the asshole here for sure though lol
Emma was critical and judgemental at the beginning - way more than she was in this episode. And considering how callous and inconsiderate Dex has been a few times and she had the restraint to not call him out on it - he was way out of line in this episode. She can be quite 'censorious' but her feedback comes from a place of honesty, not cruelty or spite. He was more hostile in this episode towards her than she had ever been towards him.
@@mansishukla6779 that is a great point, I agree! I think this is why the show is so great - there's never a "black and white" moment with them - so much of their dynamic has nuance and context and I love that it's such a deep portrayal of their relationship.
from “teach youd be a great teacher” to using the one insult against teachers on her,, yeah dex was someone else this episode. glad you guys are on the same page lol was waiting for you guys to get to this episode!!!
I love how invested you guys are in their relationship. This is such a turning point where everyone realizes that they need to grow in their respective lives on their own and if they had been together from the start it wouldn't have ended well and they'd end up resenting each other all the more!
He is a dick, but Emma sometimes did judged him and was aways making jokes abt him not being the smartest, even in this episode when she ask if he indeed writed… But yeah, Dex needs to get his sh*t together and both need some time a part from each other.
Exactly. That’s part of why it took them so long to for them to get together. He didn’t think he was good enough for her, and she didn’t think he’d want to be with her either.
I think this episode shows that sometimes no matter how close you are with someone it’s very possible for you to outgrow each other and might need to cut ties….🤷🏾♀️ Emma is kinda judgy and she has definitely implied several times that he’s dumb since like the first episode but Dexter definitely sucks and he has been on the decline for a while…🥴
I haven’t read the book, but Suki seems cool as hell. She covered for Dex in the last ep, acts like a stable, supportive gf and is a self-possessed star in her own right. I’m glad her career recovered even if dex’s didn’t (she can probably do better than him dating wise). 😅
Like Rob, this episode gave me major second-hand embarrassment and a desire to flee when I watched it. I would point out, one thing it seems you missed (in this version- I'm not a Patreon subscriber) is that Emma did propose a toast to his mom Allison (who she confirmed was dead last episode when she told him his mom would have been proud of him) and that's what prompted his kiss on her cheek. He's definitely a jerk and this is him at his worst- his reliance on the drugs meaning that even his charm fails to make up for his shortcomings. But he's not entirely out of line saying that she's been judgmental of him from the start, and that's what starts making him act out toward her in this episode. He remarks that he didn't realize Ian would be joining them, and that's the thing- he knows Ian doesn't like him or his relationship with Emma, and he's essentially saying "oh, so our get together is going to be you subtly snarking about me and the things I think are important". Then Emma's talking about these "adult" steps she's taking of moving in with Ian and they're renovating the house they own together- he's jealous because that's a way she's successful where he isn't. Then he takes her surprise about him writing an article as confirmation that she thinks little of him, and when she presses him about Suki (because she's seen him flirting with the waitress and thinks that's wrong of him) he interprets it as her rubbing it in his face that Suki's more successful than him. Meanwhile, she's understandably perturbed by his rude attitude and reliance on drugs, and thinks he's putting on airs by talking about wine provenances and the people he networks with. She's obviously justified, but honestly "man about town" and writing a column could be a great gig for someone like Dex if he stopped relying on drugs- whenever he indicates interest in topics that seem silly to "serious" people like Emma or his mom (with his childhood photos of gravel), he has been routinely told his interests are shallow or don't matter (was television presenting pretty shallow? yes and shame on the Ugliest Girlfriend one, but with a bit of encouragement he might have easily segued it into the more serious style of reporting Suki seems to be doing in this episode). Meanwhile he repeatedly tells Emma she could be a great writer and gives her encouragement he wishes would be returned (but won't outright ask for). Is Emma actually the one harshing on his job most of the time? No, but he lashes out at her because she's the one person his relationship to is deep enough that he can express some of his deeper feelings and won't lose her... except she has enough and walks away in this episode and he keeps trying to stop that by saying something, anything, that will make her stop and validate him- and very rightly, she doesn't feel like validating the asshole he's been that night. So as unbearable as this episode is to watch, I think this episode is really a crux and forces them to confront the issues in them even having a continuing friendship, let alone clearing a way for any sustainable romance.
finally the turning point in their friendship… a few episodes ago I commented on how Dex was coming across throwing himself at Emma and a couple people disagreed but finally we are seeing who Dex is. He is every guy in his 20s that is making selfish decisions and mourning the death of his mother. Instead of leaning on his best friend for support, I feel like hes trying to come across as this person who has his sh!t together and he clearly does not. He can barely hold conversation before needing to take a hit and the rose colored glasses have been removed from Emma this episode
Dex hates himself. He's so worried that he's a major failure. He failed his mom. His career is ending. He's lonely and yet he's pushing Em away because in the end he's trying to protect her from seeing him fall apart. He's not "full of himself" at this point. In the book Em says something along the lines of - I really love you Dex, I'm just not sure I like you anymore. And that's just it. He's now realizing that he doesn't like who he's become and that's hard when you've achieved everything you thought you wanted.
I don't see her putting him down. Year ago, on the first night, yes. Now it's just him trying to justify his drug abuse and rudeness and blaming someone for his sadness and grief, cause he doesn't know how to deal with it
I feel like while Dexter was being rude and obnoxious in this situation, he was also speaking facts. Emma got into teaching to avoid doing her true passion writing cause it made her feel uncomfortable and bad , but if she just works through it she can write great novels. She does need to work on finishing what she started. And honestly, I think Dexter did Make a point in calling her out and saying that she’s not where she wants to be with her career and she is just avoiding it by teaching. He made it happen by being rich and famous and Emma should not mock and look down on him (mocking him that he can’t write a review for cocktail bars, etc) and he actually achieved more than she did. However, I really believe he should have said this in a MUCH kinder way and advices her rather than call her out-wrong time to bring it up
This episode is so hard to watch but so good. But I’m really sad they took out one of my favorite lines from the book. At the end of the argument emma says “i love you dex, but i just don’t like you anymore.” Its such a simple line but it hits so hard.
This episode is actually Alison's prediction in episode two coming true when she said to Dex, "Don't stop being nice, will you?" His worst qualities were definitely in the driver's seat this episode and he was really exaggerating about Emma's supposed 'envy' of his career. I mean, yes she can be quite critical sometimes - but overall she just tends to be honest - she's like that with Ian as well. She really did try her best with him this episode, though - his behaviour was terrible and she had genuinely wanted to hang out with him as a friend. I'd also noticed in the past few episodes how he tends to rely on her when he's in a tough situation but isn't as interested in her life. She was a bit judgemental (way less than in the first episode) and yes, she does need to find her way back to writing but Dex really needs to get his act together. He personally hit rock bottom this episode and his obnoxious side (which the show was always subtly hinting at ) took over. It was great to see you guys sympathize with Emma here - she really had it rough this episode.
I can be like Dex sometimes. 😬 I can be too honest about how I am feeling. It's never from a spiteful place and I am not deliberately wanting to hurt the other person. That is often the result though. I mostly agree that he was completely an asshole and out of line. I also don't think everything he said was untrue. I don't think it was the right way to get those feelings off his chest, but I sympathize with the type of person Dex is. 🥴

"dude, i'd leave... i wouldn't, but i'd want to." rob really spoke to my non-confrontational spirit with that one
When the episode started and you guys were talking about they may kiss this episode lol you weren’t ready for the absolute chaos and breakdown of their relationship great reaction
"Do you think we're going to get a little smooch tonight?" Uh definitely not 😭
This was Dex’s rock bottom. From Emma’s POV, there’s only so much you can take before you have to walk away and let him figure it out himself. I really think she trie to be supportive after his mom died but sometimes you gotta put yourself first.

I agree wholeheartedly
Exactly! he wasn’t wrong, but his delivery, behavior and attitude was. Both things could be true at the same time.
He was right about her but in this instance, he used it to deflect against holding himself accountable for his own behavior.
Emma was critical and judgemental at the beginning - way more than she was in this episode. sorry but when dexter said "fking Birds Eye fucking frozen fish" he got a CHUCKLE out of me 😭😭😭 he ate that one thing
He definitely did🤣
Right cause he may be a bit of a rich prick but I'm sorry id be pissed too if they are over here serving me frozen food.

I think they both feel judged by the other but rooted in insecurity because they think so highly of the other 😭
Yes. 💯 I feel he was actually trying to impress her somehow
Exactly. That’s part of why it took them so long to for them to get together. He didn’t think he was good enough for her, and she didn’t think he’d want to be with her either.
Put perfectly 😂
Robs disappointed face was me this entire episode as well
Yeah Rob’s body language. He can’t even look it’s such a train wreck of an evening g.
I dont' know what other type of reaction I was expecting, but seeing you guys rally around Emma so hard during their fight was so heatwarming.
I feel like this is the most involved they’ve been collectively watching this show thus far. Loved to see it!
I agree! Also, Ep 7 has amazing acting from both leads!
“It’s like they’re going to a funeral “ 🤣

I LOVED Suki! Her & Tilly were def my fav minor inside characters!
Nah, Zuff has a point, I didn't like Dexter's hair after the fact too. Y'all being so disappointed with Dex was so great to watch tho for some reason.
Like Rob, this episode gave me major second-hand embarrassment and a desire to flee when I watched it.

Very well said!

The truths were spitted out on both sides, for sure. Great writing, great acting. Can't wait for the next 1❤

This is why they were both in black…
