Percy reveals the full tale of his blood feud with the Briarwoods, leaving Vox Machina just one week to prepare. While half the team returns to Kraghammer to settle old debts, Vax acquires some new weapons, Percy forges a special surprise, and makeovers are applied to Trinket and Grog. Finally, the group makes their way to a fateful dinner with the sinister and mysterious Lord and Lady Briarwood…

What impresses me the most is how Liam and Laura manage to actually imitate real sibling rivalry/love and it's nuts
They talked about how they spent like 3 hours in a cafe before the campaign hashing out the backstory of their characters. That's commitment.
To be honest, watching this I always thought they were ACUALLY related
...And it stuck! So many "twins" moments in campaign 3 now they're tablemates again.

I think it helps that the people around this table (barring one obvious outlier) are like... the closest of close friends. You can regularly see the genuine care each of them has for each other. It helps because that leaks into their characters and makes the bonds feel that much stronger. I cant wait til after episode 27. I feel that from that point on, their connection will only get stronger.

@@johannesjacome7539 I know you shouldn't mix water with acid, because it heats up a lot, but putting acid in water will neutralize safely to some extent, as far as I know. Not that I'm an expert, I've only taken a few chemistry classes. Considering Percy said it would take a few minutes to take affect, and he specifically mentioned sulfuric acid, it would have to be diluted (at least to a certain degree) and grog would only have a few drops on his hands. The bucket is seemingly large enough, as it fit both of grogs goliath sized hands so there would be enough water to neutralize it and absorb the heat. Not that the dm and percy are going to think about all the possible outcomes at the table, but still, something to consider.

@@LeJazzPanda When you put water in sulfuric acid it boils, if you get sulfuric acid on your hands you still want to wash it with water with only a few drops compared to liters of water, the water will absorb the heat. A lot of people I don't think understand the full extent to how acid reacts with water, diluting acid by mixing it into water is a great way to make it less dangerous, I have yet to see a safety manual warning against rinsing acid off, even sulfuric, with water.
For all Orion's shortcomings, Tiberius' compulsion to introduce himself the same way every time is actually hilarious.
He has some bad habits as a player, but he had some real strengths too. Don't know what he had going on in his personal life, but I do think that with the right seating arrangement and some coaching that he could have really contributed to the show.

It's a shame because these all played for years as just a group of friends before streaming so I imagine he was quite different beforehand.
I’m watching for the first time, and initially I was baffled by all the hostility directed toward Orion, especially after he revealed that he had cancer. I’ve since gleaned that he did some pretty heinous things outside of the show which seems to have colored people’s opinions of him both on and off screen. I’ve deliberately avoided looking into it for now, because I love how he plays Tiberius and his four points of Wisdom to the hilt and I doubt I’ll be able to afterward. Outside of combat Tiberius is a hilarious character, almost as much of an impulsive over-enthusiastic kid as Grog. Sucks that his player turned out to be such a terrible person no one can enjoy him once they find out.
@@anondecepticon Yeah I liked his character too, but Orion's behaviour in his last episode made me (and the cast) extremely uncomfortable, so it was probably for the best.

I scrolled down a bit and I'm surprised I haven't seen any comments about Travis' assist to Taliesin at about 3:31:43 where, a minute or two before, Percy had been cut off while about to make a remark about slaying the illithid and betrayal. He gets accidentally cut off by Matt and trails off without finishing, but Travis waits for an opening to re-insert the comment and let Percy finish his remark. That is so fucking outstanding. What a great player.
Through both campaigns no one is a bigger out of game hype and support player than Travis he is very aware of the players at the table and its amazing.
This is not to downplay how amazing the rest of the cast of course
Yeah, I’ve noticed he did it for orion a couple games back and it was so refreshing to see it again this episode, talk about a team player.
I’ve watched s2 and currently watching 3, and during downtime I’m watching C1 for the first time ever~ Travis is such a rock in this group, so lighthearted, such a team and table player! He is 100% my fave 😍 Thanks for pointing this out!
I would imagine that comes from his more 'jock' background. Football esp. teaches teamwork like little else.

Taliesin jaffe is a God damn treasure. "5 of the 6 barrels have names on them and the briarwood a are two of them." The chills and goosebumps from that one line, and that insane performance, all the emotion in the voice. Amazing!

@@myriadd6272 I've only seen this arc play out in the animated show so far; but it was my first thought tbh about the names. it doesn't really get verbally confirmed in the show; but maybe the campaign goes into it further depth? first-time watcher here.
maybe it's bc I write/roleplay characters similar to Percy, it just made sense to me that he'd enact his vengeance and then potentially end his own life, as if bringing it full circle. darkly poetic, in a way.

Alex Jobe incorrect he lets them get away with stuff a lot more than DM’s I’ve played with but that should have been stated if they wanted gold for it.
Matt could have blammo'ed the second team (the one that tracked the Rackshasa) because they didn't sign the contract. They show up after the battle, and wind up in more trouble than before. But they had guests, and putting them in jail would have been messy.
The moment Vax asked where the local butcher was, I knew *exactly* what he was planning and I swear I felt my heart swell. Only to sink when he didn't find Kynan there. Vax is such a great character and I am so invested in all of these guys.
"High roles startle him." Oh, sweet, naive Taliesin from 5 years ago. Soon, you'll be able to summon Natural 20s on command.
I think it's hilarious that he rolls best in the story when the demon he made a pact with starts to manifest, as if Taliesin truly made a deal with the devil.

@@Darksnakemrniceguy They checked that die, it was balanced fine. After it rolled so many 20s they had it weighed and stuff. I think I remember them talking about it at some point.
@@toreyjones5715 no, they haven't checked the snitch, can't balance check a metal dice, unless you roll it 10000+ times, the exact same way each time, and keep track of the stats.
They only ever talked about checking other dice made of plastic.
Matt conversing with himself as different characters with individual personalities and voices just blows my mind.
He truly makes the game so magical!!

He is the master, my issue as a dm is coming up with an npc accent on the spot, then the party decides to make that npc a regular and the next session I have to remmember what the accent was haha
@@redbeardsworkshoppreparation is everything! Try writing up accents and personalities ahead of time. In the "new player guide" episode Matt says he makes notes on all his npcs to remember.
He continues to do this through this season and the next and I’m never NOT blown away.

To be honest, at the revelation that the last chamber was unnamed, I had the impression that perhaps the implication left unsaid was that it was for Percy himself once his revenge was meted out, as if at the point of the gun's crafting he had nothing else to live for.

They neither saw through Percy's disguise (The brairwoods only figure out who Percy is after he takes off the hat), and they didn't see Vax while he was invisible (Invisibility ended before Vax entered their room.)
As for the stealth, he opened the door to their room while visible. He can't hide like that because he's out in full view of them.
However, Lord briarwoods comment spells out vampire in a bright flashing neon sign. Could be he's bysexual, but honestly the implied super strength and natural charm screams vampywamps.

I know I'm late to this but... Liam? Is it? Vax basically when searching for the butcher, he does his little thing, and as he doesn't get an immediate answer he let's his mates continue doing their own thing, as to not slow down their pace so much.

Taliesin's role playing is flawless. So far (usually when exploring someone's backstory) the cast has usually had an awkward time, like pike when she was explaining what she was doing before she joined the groupe in the beginning, keyleth with the ashari and even vex and vax just sometimes say things about their family that are ridiculous in a really unrealistic way, but percy is totally real, I totally feel like it actually happened to him. (because it did) Thank you Taliesin.

@@nice1068 Pretty sure he was saying Taliesin's acting and immersion in his character made the story as real to us as the audience as it was to Percy.
I felt bad for him at first because the rest of the crew are obviously setting him up to get him to tell the story, and it seems like he's having trouble coming up with something at first. But I think he was just playing at being guarded and not forthcoming, because it all comes together really nicely by the end of his story and monologue. And he does clearly check his notes a bit so I think the backstory he tells was at least somewhat fleshed out beforehand.

I think you're absolutely right, I just kind of misinterpreted his uncertain body language and stumbling over his words a bit as improv, but I think you hit the nail on the head. Regardless, he pulls it out really well, whether it was planned or improvised, that whole part of the group's story arc is one of my favorites so far.

I honestly hated that prank. Travis spent like 10 episodes trying to grow that beard. Only breaking a pencil vs shouting at Liam and Matt was a LOT of restraint all things considered.
The prank Taliesin played on Travis was a lot funnier-entirely in the moment so no effort ruined, Grog shouldn’t have touched things that wasn’t his, it fit Percy’s character just as much as Grog’s, and Grog didn’t even take any hitpoints damage for the acid burn
Real late but after the way Liam laughs in Travis’ face over his 20 stealth roll for that, I wanted Travis to just get up and punch him in his smug face.

Though shaving off the whole beard, and only putting ointment on half would still be pretty chaotic, because then he wouldn't know until he grew it out again.
That being said, the belt is literally growing a beard on a hairless race, so there is no guarantee any ointment would have any effect to begin with. So with that in mind, just shaving half of is the more safer option for the chaotic evil
@@dig8634 Vax's actions were in line with chaotic neutral, as he did it for entertainment rather than true malice. Lawful Evil and Neutral Evil can be calculating in their approaches. LE has strict codes or systems involved, best represented by devils. They always have to have a reason that benefits their greater agenda/status or be told to do it by a higher ranked individual. NE are the ones who do what they can get away with, they tend to be slightly more calculating because they pick their moments. Chaotic Evil are just the worst, they can't help but do the worst possible version of any evil act. For them they don't shave half a beard as a joke, they'd be compelled to do it all in a way that truly destroys the person.. and then try to murder them. CE are the villains that don't just kill your family, they'd enjoy making it horrifyingly painful while they force you to watch, before doing the same to you.. that's their idea of humor.

My Triton Ranger is currently part of an adventuring party, and we are currently hunting gnolls for 25 gold an ear, and 500 gold for the head of the Gnoll leader. More difficult than it sounds, because these gnolls can go into a super powered state where their bites deal 1d8 damage and will drain the vitality from the target. Yeah, not fun.

Say what you want, but when Orion said that Percy’s moment was more important than his “secondary” thing, making Taliesin tear up and mouth thank you to him, I felt that in my soul.
His hate has to come from shit he did off show, cause while every now and again in the episodes I've seen with him he can come off a bit dickish, the vast majority of the time he is role-playing his character, and is pretty funny while doing so. They just over exaggerate how "terrible" he was on the show when in reality its just that they don't like him personally (I've looked around for info on what exactly he has done to anger them and apparently he was a dick on socials and shit) and so they refuse to get any enjoyment from his time on the show even though his character is pretty cool.
@@ProperlyGaming except i am sure many people like me were driven nuts by him long before they ever found out about the stuff he did outside of campaign so that doesnt exactly hold up, he has had alot of poor table conduct and some pretty blatant cheating, and so i do find him very hard to tolerate and he does somewhat mute my enjoyment of this wonderful show when he is acting up, however i don't hate tiberius completely and when orion was doing well tiberius was able to be a very fun character with some truly great and hilarious moments and the moment belle pointed out was truly wonderful and a good glimse of what orion was probably like in the two years vox machina was a home game. but even more importantly if his table conduct doesnt bother you i wouldnt dream of trying to convince you to see it otherwise because if you are able to get full enjoyment out of all these early eps then thats wonderful and i am happy for you, sadly for many of us its not so easy to ignore and it does genuinely make sections harder to watch, so whilst some people may be just jumping on the hate orion bandwaggon please remember many of us are just talking about it because we are saddened that the early parts of these episodes while still amazing have some serious problems that affect our enjoyment and we are still mourning the tiberius that could have been because those great moments where he is a fun character make the rough moments and the leaving all the sadder for the lost potential 8th awesome vox machina member we could have kept.
P. S in regards to his out of game conduct it was a bit worse than being a dick on socials, seeing as he did a charity stream for one of his twitch mods whose dad died but then kept all the money for himself (some have said he did this same stunt again later but i havent checked that one out so i refuse to hold it against him) which i have to say is pretty damn scummy and thats not even mentioning the abuse of several of his exs which he himself admitted to, so i can definitely get why people dont like him outside of the show. (though to be fair he was going through a LOT at the time with the various illnesses and drugs and apparently he is doing better these days and seems to be trying to atone which if its sincere, good for himand i wish him the best.)
@@lavenderwalrus9875 i agree with you, I knew nothing about Orion as a person. But by episode 9 I started skipping parts when he was fighting. He’s not a terrible character but dang he just inserted himself too much others scenes and people would ask him why and he would just ignore them, and those behaviors he displayed begin to happen more often than not. But they have fun parts they’re having fun with him in this episode too. After he was no longer on I kept watching until it was announced in one episode that he wasn’t coming back. That’s when I googled what he’s up too (about June 2020 when I started watching C1) and saw what he wrote online and why they chose to have him step out due to choices and actions he made in his personal life. People don’t have an agenda against him until they read up on what he did off screen. He did some pretty janky stuff with money.
@@ProperlyGaming nah, I am someone who is coming into this fresh after being away from DnD for awhile. I wasn't aware of the drama until I saw it in the comments the last 2-3 episodes. So that didn't affect how i felt, and i still haven't bothered to look it up.
That being said I enjoy his character in a vacuum, seperate from the guy playing it. But his table play often ruins it, as it is pretty horrendous. Even worse so for those of us who know what it's like to DM/GM for players like this.
Some things I noticed are metagaming to force himself into RP or gain power, wasting his resources then complaining OOC because he feels useless during a fight, using spell points or slots he probably shouldn't have, trying to oneshot encounters before they even start, etc.
I've even caught him fudging dice in front of the camera when they happened to zoom in on his table. Which, considering the looks between Sam, Liam, and Mercer during his turns is probably not a rare occurrence.
Players like this are a nightmare, because you have to basically record keep for them to keep them honest. Which adds yet another set of things for a DM to do. It Also drags things down for other players when a single character forces their way into every RP situation, rather than letting people have their own side stories. As a DM that creates a situation I have to interject when i should be sitting back, preparing, and taking note of how the RP is going.
@@piranhaplantX However, you'll notice that there are many who enjoy his character and actually do miss him in later episodes. Good chance that most of his fans never played DnD themselves (and if they did, they were never DMs), but changes nothing that to many, he was an entertaining character that they miss in the show.
Man, can we all just give a huge hand to Matthew? I was amazed not just at his incredible worldbuilding and ability to work with his own player's made up stories, but his way of juggling the party when it was split up so that each player got to do what he or she wanted to do without giving them too much wait time. Unbelievable.
I'm just watching campaign 1 now, and man... this guy is GREAT! I've watched all of campaign 2, and I think 6 really is the more optimal number of cast members, but damn... Matt juggles up to 8 players and hundreds of NPC's every week... with unique characters, ticks, and flavors... it's UNREAL!

I love how Travis is just sitting by himself thinking of all the evil things he can do to Vax, while percy builds his stuff after the incident.

My favorite npc so far is Lady Kima
Just started Critical Role recently, 2022, and never been so in love so quickly. Did a couple episodes then watched the show and I am insanely excited to witness Percy's storyline from the original campaign. Percy was by far my favorite character in season 1!

The look on Liam,Laura, and Travis' face when Percy says the briarwood s killed his family. The speed at which the facial expressions changed was impressive. Makes you truly feel the same way.
Taliesin really impressed me with how much he got into character for this one - he was literally crying at one point! That said, thanks to Matt, I imagine a lot of his nervous fidgeting later in the episode was NOT acting at all!
