We burn paper, cardboard, wood scraps, and such in an old dryer drum. My grandparents burned everything in a barrel just like you have. I don't burn trash but I will burn up any/all sensitive documents (of which I accumulate quite a bit) because every shredder I've bought failed after a few months of use. No matter how good the reviews were and no matter how small the stack of paper I shredded, the motor would burn out long before the year was over. So, for that reason alone, I use a burn barrel with a screen filter over the top to catch any burning embers. Also, I use a small amount of torch oil instead of gas or diesel.
Living in rural areas we often don't have access to recycling outfits. All of my paper products get incinerated. Although I prefer bottled beer, I buy cans which are recyclable in our area.
Silly question. When I cut grass, I have a bag on the back of my mower. I usually throw the grass in the back of my yard but honestly I’m tired of it. Would I be able to burn grass in a barrel? Silly question but this is my first time owning a house and I would like some feedback/safety tips before I buy a burn barrel.
Burning grass would be really smoky and often to wet to burn. But heres what I used to do when I dumped grass. Buy cheap high nitrogen fertilizer then when you dump your grass pour a layer of fertilizer down between layers. This breaks down the grass quick and makes great compost dirt for you spring gardening projects 👍
Subscribing! I'm watching because I'm trying to figure out how to burn wet trash. We had a ton of snow since before halloween? And with the birth of puppies who are now tearing up all of our trash I've got about an acre to 2 Acres of nonsense to get rid of hope you'll come up with any ideas you might have for cat litter that's been used. I'm off grid for the rest of my life now and I'm finding it difficult under so much snow waiting to get to the dump. Just bought a $30 barrel from Rural King today. Kimble's trash guy kept skipping us week after week so I stopped paying and there's no other company who services my area.
I was thinking about getting a burn barrel to burn grass, compost, and small tree limbs. Could I use all that to burn down together. Use it in my garden to grow vegetables?
Grass would be tough but I would compost grass and use burn the sticks then use the ash in you compose or garden for a awesome soil mixture. Just remember to add a little fertilizer to you grass compose so it breaks down faster. Also keep it away from you home to reduce risk of fire and smell. Composting grass gets really hot some times
I burn my trash by lighting paper on fire, using a Bic lighter. It catches the cardboard on fire which catches any wood or thicker trash on fire.. No fuel needed.. No one catching on fire. I try to burn when the ground is wet. I use plain, not glossy paper and cardboard in my flower beds.
Nope just slots , trick is to keep it off the ground and empty it after it’s been completely burned. I also use the old lid to keep rain out when not used. Last a long time
@ Thanks brother!! That’s a great idea! My burn barrel is in 2 pieces. The rust ring about half way down got it!! If I had emptied it out and used the lid like you said it might not be in 2 pieces! Thanks for the tips!
