Last month I built 10 of these, 6 for my own excursions, and gave a small pack to each of my children. Last week my son said he had to use one as not an emergency but the need arose and it was perfect in a blizzard condition, mine were 20 percent bigger, but same effect, thank you for putting this video out there.

@@Vahn-xc1gc This thing can apply continuous flame to your material for 15 minutes, drying out and starting wet wood as demonstrated in the video. A lighter or ferrous rod can not do that. Also, both of those tools require technical skill and dexterity, which you might be lacking in a hypothermia situation. For this you only have to roughly pile your material and be able to pull the cord.

Likely more true than you realise; this has unknown electrical tape (probably toxic) and cyanacrylate in multiple burning portions though the red phosphorus from the striker is removed that clear glue if cyanacrylate is a carcenogenic compound that aerosolizes when burned. If you know what you are doing removing the starter after the fire is going would make this safer but it likely would still taint the innitial burn materials with cancer causing materials and be extremely unsafe after striking. Strong reccomendation to swap at the very minimum the glue and tape for something safer to burn like masking tape and school glue. Wire wrap would still get the matches tight enough too.

Edit: also wanted to add/ask, do you guys think this might be illegal to travel with? At least in the US the fuel mix he makes here is common in model rocketry and is called a sugar engine I think, the nitrate and sugar mix. This is treated as a low grade explosive though which is fully legal to make but illegal to transport without a certain license.
Just a warning in case anyone is curious or doesn't know, I highly doubt you'd get your firestarters inspected or something just on the way to a campsite but just wanted to mention that.

Genius design, you don't need to grind match heads, or anything else. The seal the sparkler powder to the cotton pads with a thin layer of wax and that would be simpler, faster, and work better.

I’ve been using cotton balls saturated in charcoal lighter fluid and dipped in paraffin wax for several years now. They’re easy to make and will burn for about 11 minutes. About the same thing you’re doing minus the pull start sparkler/sugar rock fuel concoction on the tip of your starter. In fact, if you have a reasonably good selling pill bottle, you can put saturated cotton balls of lighter fluid into the pill bottle and not even bother with the wax. I would imagine the lighter fluid may evaporate over a prolonged period of time. About the longest of had these in storage is maybe six or eight weeks and they worked perfectly fine. It’s just the ease of being able to make three of them inside of about 30 seconds.

Had you thought to use those birthday cake candles, the trick ones that relight by themselves, instead of regular candle wax I would think they might stay alight under adverse conditions, but that is only an untried guess. As they say, prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

@@littleworkshopofhorrors2395 - I’ve not tried the trick candle wax. In fact I rarely even use wax anyone. A good sealing pill bottle works really well.

@littleworkshopofhorrors2395 It's nothing to do with the wax with those "trick" candles. They contain magnesium powder in their wicks so when the flame is blown out, the hot embers from the wick ignite the magnesium powder, producing tiny sparks. This, in turn, ignites the vaporized paraffin hydrocarbons, which relights the wick

you can simply make cotton balls, put vaseline on it and they already make good firestarters and are easy to ignite with a lighter and a lot easier to make. put them in a plastic bag and don't worry about self ignition. to me, this huge ass fuse to ignite a basic cotton piece soaked with wax and lighter fluid is a bit overkill but i love how it burns. oh and btw vaseline is petroleum jelly :-) i hope this helps too!

i had been using cotton pads soaked with a 50/50 of lighter refill liquid and paraffin wax for the last 4 o 5 years which work very well even in winter ( in finland) and wet..All this process in my opinion is a holliwood special effect which in reality is totally overkill... like shooting a rabbit with a talk cannon.... Useless, but very scenic ...so 10/10 on special effects :)

is the lighter fluid really needed? Feel like by the time you need to use the starter the fluid would have evaporated by then even with the wax coating. Feel like it woul dbe better to hit each layer of the cotton with some wax, that way it would act more like a big wick and burn longer while still creating a big flame
