@spastic techniques more specifically, a supercharger is utilized by pumping air into an engine or something to increase oxygen intake and 'supercharging' the combustion within
This is absolutely one of my favorite tricks out in the woods. Usually, we’ll be out mid snow storm and fell a tree or two. Wood tends to be a bit wet, so we get it rollin the best we can and i break out the cordless leafblower to let’r rip. People give you the strangest looks but once they get it...
A lot a people think this is more smoke. Well not really. its denser smoke, yet for only a couple minutes versus much longer, broader, thinner smoke. Plus this is a safe way to burn without worries of high wind scattering sparks that come off of say pinetags when you burn them. In any case its a fun way to fuck around. Have a few guys over fill it with branches from a good hardwood grab a few hotdogs amd cook em like marshmellows on a campfire
Smoke is just unburned fuel. When the ratio of oxygen and fuel is in the flammable range, it can be ignited. Smoke is usually too "lean" to ignite, like a clean campfire smoke (open air, plenty of o2), but when it is a ventilation controlled fire (not enough o2) like in this enclosed space, the smoke will be flammable once it reaches and can mix with fresh o2. All you need is ignition source at that point, and boom. Same principle as a "smoke explosion", "flashover", and (part of) a "backdraft."
I think at the beginning the heat from the initial fire was cooking off the moisture in the clippings. Once the moisture was boiled out, the temperature rapidly shot up and ignited the remaining combustible. That's why it smoked like crazy at first.
I've got something like this, standing around waiting for shit to burn isn't a good use of any ones time. This will burn anything once it gets going, i've chucked freshly cut willow in mine and it doesn't care, it just burns
Joking aside nazis had an idea for a coal powered jet - imagine a small flying wing with a round air intake at front - would have a big basket of coal. Would be towed from ground to operational altitude. Incoming air would hit coal at a couple hundred mph. Resulting gas/heat /flame goes out jet in back - 3 to 5 minutes of jet flight - attack bombers then glide down. Dont think it flew ...
I like it on the practical basis of creating smoke for a shorter amount of time than a conventional fire. A few minutes and its gone. I also like it for the fun part of badassery.
From experience, I find that that introducing the blower pipe into the barrel at an angle so that the air swerles makes for a much more efficient burn.
Something tells me Mikey wasn't hanging around for much longer, after you proceeded to generate the suns core temperature. You are the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that I'll build one of these; my current, standard burn barrel has nearly eliminated trips to the dump. With a barrel like this, I should never have to make another dump run, again. How very convenient.
@MossyWater turbo charged means driven by exhaust. Supercharged means driven by the crankshaft or in this case a leaf blower. A supercharger can still be a turbine
@@21Trainman an actual turbo system would be sick! I think you may still need a leaf blower to start the whole thing though. So it'd be like a twincharged setup :D

If you light it at the top, it wont smoke nearly as bad... you are pitting superheat under fuel and it is releasing woodgas into an area too low in temp to combust. Start at the top and the hottest area will be at the top and it will consume the gas cleaner. It will also not release as much gas as quickly and allow the temp to build ahead of the gas production... cool burner!
Earl Gray nope, been burning yard waste in various burners for decades now. With a lid, the fire will spread out on top of the fuel, and burn right down following the air... I have seen a few sawdust burners that also burn this same way...
Adam Huber has the right idea. Light it top and bottom, then start the blower. The top flames should ignite the wood gas earlier, and transition to flames faster.
Ozark MountainGoat that would be a possibility. It is not the material that burns, it is the gas released by the heat being applied to the material. Putting all that heat under all that fuel releases a huge amount of gas, but without enough O2 or heat to combust it inside the drum. If something suddenly changes to admit O2, yes, it could go boom... as a neighbor the monster cloud of smoke would annoy me. I have made a few burners to give to neighbors over the years who insist on burning their trash improperly. Well worth the effort to have to not smell their lack of knowledge...
Kept rewatching it. Just imagine a stronger metal and bricking that in, lot of heat reuse could come from that. Lower wind speed from induction to make it last longer.
