As a Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves, the grind is humbling insanity. It's a grind that makes you love every single fish you catch, give names to plants you stare at while fishing up trash, and turn you into a demon of a pvper when it comes to defending your fish. I have so many stories of crazy situations that popped up, I remember every moment of the immense relief of finishing various fish types, and even creating my own spreadsheets just to keep track of what I needed. It's a grind I can only recommend for players who want to stand among the greatest by clawing their way up to the heavens. Even today I still fish, you just can't stop once you're free. -Lost Jackie, Day 1 player

@@BionicTem Before I posted this comment I only played Maidens Voyage (the tutorial) and the “Pirates Life” campaign. I literally got the game that very day. Since then I played a few actually games, where I would freely go with my sloop, from island to island doing merchants voyages.
My buddies and I, back when they had the fishing event, when we needed battlegills? We loaded up a rowboat and went to the middle of the skeleton fleet event. Skelly ships don't bother you in the rowboat, you're hard to spot by player ships and as long as you have bait to last, you were golden. However will say, 4 people on a row boat is kind of crowed...
In terms of Hunter's Call, the best location I've found for profit vs risk is in the Devil's Roar, specifically near Cursewater Shore. Staying by the south side of the island meant that you were safe from nearby volcanoes, being in the Devil's Roar meant easy access to Devilfish, and the island itself had a small pond which could be used for fishing for Pondies (plus the grubs you can get from digging on the island). Also the fact that Brian's bazaar is very close by to Cursewater Shore, which is an added bonus. If you're really lucky, you could also get a skelly ship to patrol nearby, which also means you can fish up Battlegills (which also takes grubs).
My crew and I like to go on "Hunter's Call movie nights", where we start a watch2gether (allows you to watch youtube videos that are synced up for each viewer) and then set up a 3-5 hour long playlist before hopping into SoT to go fishing. SoT allows you to pop out videos and overlay them on top of the game, so for those without two computer monitors you can still have the video stream in a corner of the screen while fishing. It's a fun way of adding a little more activity to an otherwise mindnumbing task!
When fishing, push down on your rod in addition to the correct direction, obvious exception for needing to pull back. Always be tap reeling. You can reel more as the fish switches directions. Lower your rod when they are tired. I dont know if or how much lowering your rod helps, but I catch fish a hell of a lot faster than any youtuber I've seen. My fellow sailors... leave the gunpowder kegs where they lay. Unless you are properly set up and committed to trolling with them, they just gonna get you sunk. xD
Love how you gyes helped the noobs with all your treasures. Personally i would have allied with them. But what you gyes did was so much kinder :) and you can just use your hooks to drag after the skellies, then you got thoose battle gills in no time, they have a crazy high bite rate. Only fish where you have to stand still is thoose wreckers, they leave you vulnerable, crazy scary and fun, to sail for the seapost after an hour of open water wreck fishing.
I think rare should add voyages for hunters to catch “rare delicacy’s” Some ideas are golden animals sighted on an island which drop “premium pork” or something. Hunting down a meg last sighted at , which grants you hunters call rep for killing it. Or even just daily quests like “hand in 10 different types of food” or “reel in 3 trophy fish.” Quests that recycle daily and give rep for completing them. My friend grinds out fish while I steer, and over a couple weeks we have only made it to 25. All mermaid gems go to them, all fish and Meg meat go to them.
I've been playing SoT for about one and a half year now and the Hunter's Call was always this long term thing to do on the side. Me and my mate would set out sometimes on a fishing trip and it almost always ended up with us doing some shenanigans along the way. Almost every single "fishing trip" ended at Reapers with tons of loot
going to be honest here, my entire progress for the hunter call so far has been gems and whatever drops i can scavenge up from ship wrecks (given that 98% of the time i'm usually run for the hills if i get some much as a whiff of another player nearby) XD believe me when i say, doing this approach is way more of a grinding situation for it then what you've done mate. currently been working this way for like 2 and 1/2 seasons so far and i'm only like lvl 17 myself ..... oooofff i have a long way to go lol
I considered myself a fishing-enthusiast in this game, everytime i had nothing to do, or were just sailing from island to island, i'd take out the rod and try to catch something. That lasted until i tryed to max Hunter's Call. As a "hobby", fishing is nice. Doing it on the outpost when waiting for your crewmates is ok, fine while sailing. But longer periods of constant fishing is just tedious. I've eventually maxed Hunter's Call by selling them all my mermaid gems and the fish i found randomly on shipwrecks. I've even got my Shadow Stormfish from shipwrecks! Since then i don't even remember fishing anymore.
What we find best to do is get 200 earthworms, drive to a random shipwreck far to the west cause you usually don't get interrupted there, and fish at a shipwreck. You can get The Plentifins and the Wreckers with Earthworms at the same time, thus increasing the chance to not get a Splashtail ( I recommend not even letting them bite the fishing rod) and yeah after 2 hours you have plenty of wreckers and plentifins to sell :).
Edit: Also while beeing anchored at a wreck, we found out that it seems like the storm does not hit you as much as it usually does. We fished in around 5 storms lately while beeing anchored and we lost 2 fishes only, so even getting some extra stormfish is well easier that way
@@-lilith-9325 I am a solo noob, so going to give this a try. What do you do when it is storming and you are sailing? If I try to sail through my ship fills with water, bailing myself out is futile. There's been several times where I've run from storms only to have them catch up with me and sink me. I keep choosing the Shores of Plenty because they look the most calm. Any beginner or intermediate tips you have would be appreciated, or point me in the right direction! I've been reading the wiki and watching videos, too!
This is so funny, my crew and I JUST did a Hunter's Call grind this past weekend. Great video, Cliff!! I'm loving the content you're putting out. We found out that in addition to gems, the Breath of the Sea from the treasuries/shrines sells for a lot of gold and rep at Hunter's Call. Give it a try!
Stack thieves haven missions, have 4 ppl on your boat, clear the first map on thieves haven which should give you about 4 gems, vote off the thieves haven mission, start it again, repeat, sell at hunters call :)
Close, but the hardest grind is merchant delivery of cloth, plants, and rum bottles in the Devils Roar. It USED to be the easiest as each delivery destination was within the devil’s roar. So you could load up on multiple voyages and be running from island to island, delivering and picking up at the same time. No more! Each delivery is now back in the normal map, making each voyage a long, long haul just to deliver 6-8 items. Given that you need to do 200 of each….means you have a lot of sailing to do. I curse myself every day I do one that I didn’t finish it before the change.
Hunters call has gotten way easier then when it was released. We had to be lucky and find bait in barrels only and once you did that you just went to work. I got lucky and had a buddy who was a top tier grinder and he helped me max my hc. All i had to do was cook everything caught and be security.
I only played Sea of Thieves for a couple of days and randomly found out about this faction because I like fishing in adventure games to chill in between high energy moments. I also had cooked some snake and when I tested if you could sell it, the game pointed out to me that I can sell it to the hunters. I did actually level up a bit because I had to fight off a Kraken and then I found the remains of a ship with a shitton of cooked food to sell lmao. I guess you could technically hunt down ships to hope for the meat and fish but truly... this stuff takes forever.
As a fisherman I got a pirate legend with Hunters Call LVL 50. I was just the one fishing in the crew. Once I convinced my friends for fishing on Mermaids Hideaway by fishing pondies (Best fishing spot ever). Mermaids Hideaway has 3 cooking spots + 1 on the ship, you find quite often Mermaid statues there and if you are bored you can do the captain now and then. Dunno how I convinced them but we were fishing and cooking for 4 straight hours !!
Hey cliff! Love the videos. As a fisherman myself the easiest way is definitely pondies. 1 reel to catch and trophies are still worth alot. Keep up the great tales!
I find fishing to be the the most chill part of SoT, it gives me a minute to relax and not think about how I'm gonna get my latest loot grab to and outpost without being killed, or the stress of trying to even find said loot on an island or lost ship. Fishing isn't too hard for me (probably not for anyone else tho either lmao) and it give me time to clear my head of stress and anger (Unless I lose the fish, in which case I go AAAAA-), and it's one of my 2 favorite ways to end a long looting session, the other being getting alcohol poisoning at the nearest tavern ;) It is a MEGA slow grind for 50 Hunter Call, so I personally recommend either selling your meats/fish after you finish a voyage and have nothing else to lose, or doing what Cliff did here, and go hard core, fishing at ghost forts, active skeleforts, and storms on the Devils Roar without fear of any players.
My crew mate and I have decided to sail as a fishing company (aka. Dog Honey Fishing CO.) and trade people with our loots for gems (3 loots per 1 gem). It has been really fun - Of course, if people suddenly attack us, we fight. Otherwise, we become an alliance with them and trade our loots with them for gems and fish. What a great way to enjoy the game :)
You can also sell breaths of the sea to them. So going around collecting coral bottles to get those started is also a good play. Somehow got lucky once and found 3 bottles on one seapost. Plus it's another source for more gem's.
The true best way to level Hunter's Call is to turn it into a downtime activity. On a Galleon (or Brigantine) for example, during minimal activity such as sailing from Point A to Point B, one or two people would manage the ship (sails, steering, lookout) and one or two would be responsible for fishing. Whoever ends up having the most downtime would be responsible for cooking everything, and sailing routes can always be shifted towards a seapost to sell the haul at regular intervals. You could always save the Mermaid and Siren gems to sell at a seapost as well if you feel like expediting the grind a little bit, but in the end it ends up fitting in to the regular game organically enough that you won't even really process how long the grind is taking. When playing with friends you can always change out who does what, but outside of time sensitive or dangerous things, you'd be surprised at the amount of free time people truly have on a ship outside of steering that could easily go to grinding up the Call.
I'm glad I grinded out 'Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves' years ago. Just the simple fact of having this title has made many different crews in my travels see me and want nothing to do with me. Cause if you're willing to grind out that much fishing, you're probably pretty experienced.
You can slowly reel in while the fish is resisting - you do not have to wait for the tension to disapate. Pulse reeling in and stop when you hear the vibration/warning that the line will snap. Give it a second, then continue. You can reel in fish MUCH faster this way rather than stopping and waiting for the fish to relax.
Not sure I'd call this the hardest grind but I respect the content it's well made. I'm not max athena's becuase I don't grind in sea of thieves but I've been max hunter's call forever because I'd casually sell gems from world events to them or from stolen fish/sunken ship fish. I actually didn't do much fishing other than in the shores of gold for sea junk.
I think it would be great to be one of the go-to people when Cliff puts together a crew. Yeah, being crew for any of the bigger SoT streamers would be cool, and others may have specific ones they think would be great to crew with, but it seems like Cliff just has more straight up fun with it and would be a fun crew to be on.

I say your one of the best sot youtubers. Most people post stream highlights, shorts, or just really low quality stereotypes/rankings. Your one of the only people that makes this kind of content and its great!
Cliff before starts hunting fish: "It doesn't look so hard."
Cliff after the end of the video when he founds out that it all was only for 5 levels of reputation for the hunter's call: "Ok, it's not that easy as I thought...."
Quick tip, while your at a fortress, the basement pool, when closed, counts as freshwater. Can catch a TON of pondies.
It genuinely shocks me how this channel only has 34k subscribers, this is the only SoT content creator that I actually watch and enjoy, the editing is so well done and the stories always get me to sit down and watch them
As a Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves, the grind is humbling insanity.
Any Hunter's Call representatives out there?
I don't understand how there is any, although new fortresses certainly make it easier with the food ig
Love your videos
I do from time to time
I maxed out hunter's call rap the month it came out and I've only got three commendations left before 100% on it
@@magicpyroninja Lemme guess, you still need the blackcloud wreckers, sand battlegils and foresaken devilfish??
I love Birdy’s reaction to the adventure. It’s priceless
Never give in, the the grind yes it's slow but the sweatness of the comedations being done is satisfying. Your tales of the seas Cliff are awesome keep it up !!
SoT has one of the least satisfying grinds in the history of grinding.
Hello Cliff. As a sot vet it does my old heart good to see relatively new players have both ethics and fun. Very enjoyable.
I have a little tip for you and all the other fishermen out there who is trying to get them Battlegills: You no longer need fort world events or fort of the dammed to get Battlegills.
You can catch them... (wait for it...) At active Fortresses. Yes really. I hope that helps you in your quest to becoming a true Hunter. Keep the good content flowing. :)
I know it takes ALOT of time to complete and very boring but when your done with it you get the best feeling ever i know from experience
👌
I love the fact that you had your running lights nautically correct green being on the starboard, red being on the port... cheers!!!
Started grinding for the Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves title a couple weeks ago (Grade 5 for all commendations in Hunters Call).
The banjo that's played while fishing is hard coded into my brain.
When I sleep, I hear it.
When I work, I hear it.
When I shit, I hear it.
Definitely recommend. 10/10
5:41 everyone say it with me now, thanks Rare!
One of the best sea of thieves content creators here 🙌
Just discovered you yesterday and love your content, glad to see there is today already a new upload, but I still have to catch up on old videos! Still amazing and entertaining videos
The reason why you didnt get as many fish is because Birdie ate them secretly
Fun fact: I just bought Sea of thieves yesterday, but I still haven’t joined a normal game of sea of thieves, so all of your videos really help.
What do you mean a normal game?
@@BionicTem Before I posted this comment I only played Maidens Voyage (the tutorial) and the “Pirates Life” campaign. I literally got the game that very day. Since then I played a few actually games, where I would freely go with my sloop, from island to island doing merchants voyages.
Im also on that grind.. i can say, spaming a & d while catching the fish makes it a lot fast :)
Classic A & D moves, I like it
My buddies and I, back when they had the fishing event, when we needed battlegills? We loaded up a rowboat and went to the middle of the skeleton fleet event. Skelly ships don't bother you in the rowboat, you're hard to spot by player ships and as long as you have bait to last, you were golden.
However will say, 4 people on a row boat is kind of crowed...
As someone who is level 37 in the hunter's call, I feel your pain.
You need help
Love the content, keep it up
My crew and I like to go on "Hunter's Call movie nights", where we start a watch2gether (allows you to watch youtube videos that are synced up for each viewer) and then set up a 3-5 hour long playlist before hopping into SoT to go fishing. SoT allows you to pop out videos and overlay them on top of the game, so for those without two computer monitors you can still have the video stream in a corner of the screen while fishing.
It's a fun way of adding a little more activity to an otherwise mindnumbing task!
Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Unless you are properly set up and committed to trolling with them, they just gonna get you sunk. xD
I was just about to go to sleep, but I guess I won't for 13 more minutes.
😴
Love how you gyes helped the noobs with all your treasures. Personally i would have allied with them. But what you gyes did was so much kinder :)
and you can just use your hooks to drag after the skellies, then you got thoose battle gills in no time, they have a crazy high bite rate. Only fish where you have to stand still is thoose wreckers, they leave you vulnerable, crazy scary and fun, to sail for the seapost after an hour of open water wreck fishing.
Pain, love this faction though
Love to hate or hate to love it
I think rare should add voyages for hunters to catch “rare delicacy’s”
Some ideas are golden animals sighted on an island which drop “premium pork” or something.
People that are level 50 hunters call are psychopaths
Bro Getting Max Hunters Call is probably my biggest life accomplishment
content pog!
Yay
This is by far my favourite video and favourite faction
Hi
Hey
Found your channel the other day and your vids are legendary man. Great stories
going to be honest here, my entire progress for the hunter call so far has been gems and whatever drops i can scavenge up from ship wrecks (given that 98% of the time i'm usually run for the hills if i get some much as a whiff of another player nearby) XD believe me when i say, doing this approach is way more of a grinding situation for it then what you've done mate. currently been working this way for like 2 and 1/2 seasons so far and i'm only like lvl 17 myself ..... oooofff i have a long way to go lol
I dont mind the grind of catching fish. Feels like an even riskier fishing simulator and I like it
This is so funny, my crew and I JUST did a Hunter's Call grind this past weekend.
Is that the meta?
@@CliffTheStoryGuy its the best way i know of to acquire a lot of mermaid gems
Sounds like a fair deal
I absolutely love these. Please keep them coming
Whenever I see an upload from u I get super excited because ur soo entertaining
I only played Sea of Thieves for a couple of days and randomly found out about this faction because I like fishing in adventure games to chill in between high energy moments. I also had cooked some snake and when I tested if you could sell it, the game pointed out to me that I can sell it to the hunters. I did actually level up a bit because I had to fight off a Kraken and then I found the remains of a ship with a shitton of cooked food to sell lmao. I guess you could technically hunt down ships to hope for the meat and fish but truly... this stuff takes forever.
I love your channel since I watched the first video keep up the good work
i remember the first treasure i ever tried to sell being a keg. learned a lot here, thanks!
just as i finished a 8 hour fishing session. this gets uploaded. love it.
This man makes even fishing exciting, I’m impressed
As a fisherman I got a pirate legend with Hunters Call LVL 50. I was just the one fishing in the crew.
Once I convinced my friends for fishing on Mermaids Hideaway by fishing pondies (Best fishing spot ever).
Mermaids Hideaway has 3 cooking spots + 1 on the ship, you find quite often Mermaid statues there and if you are bored you can do the captain now and then.
Dunno how I convinced them but we were fishing and cooking for 4 straight hours !!
My goal in the first place was to have all fishing rods available, man this escalated quickly
dont like playing this game myself, but watching your videos really gives me chills
I love your content, you are just unique, funny, a breath of fresh air, I enjoy spending time watching you play this game
Amazing video! Keep it up! I'm always waiting for your new videos!
Fishing isn't too hard for me (probably not for anyone else tho either lmao) and it give me time to clear my head of stress and anger (Unless I lose the fish, in which case I go AAAAA-), and it's one of my 2 favorite ways to end a long looting session, the other being getting alcohol poisoning at the nearest tavern ;)
It is a MEGA slow grind for 50 Hunter Call, so I personally recommend either selling your meats/fish after you finish a voyage and have nothing else to lose, or doing what Cliff did here, and go hard core, fishing at ghost forts, active skeleforts, and storms on the Devils Roar without fear of any players.
I’m loving these vids dude! Also the thieves haven runs can give you a lot of gems so that would probably be good for it.
i started playing sea of thieves 4 days ago it's so fun and this videos makes me so happy man please upload as much as you can very good content❤️👍🏼
Cause if you're willing to grind out that much fishing, you're probably pretty experienced.
love all your videos cliff.. its always entertaining and look forward to every video you release..
These videos just make me laugh, keep it up and nice editing
