Many Volvo designs are classic from factory. Brand new, it's already outdated, but with style. It is built out of trend so it never have a way to fall into the pit of oblivion.
There are few cars that can pretend to succeed in that kind of aesthetic path, best example being Rolls-Royce.

I’m glad someone is finally trying to restore a 740. For a while it seems everyone was just beating and drifting them. When I was little my uncle was moving halfway across the world and gave me his 86’ 740 Turbo wagon, but the parents got rid of due to age and how worn out it was. It’s rare in the Midwest, especially now. Luckily a few years later another relative gave me their 95’ 850 Turbo sedan, which I still have today. I say, the hubcaps, better yet, factory alloy wheels from a GLE or Turbo.

Years ago, I bought a used 94 Volvo 740 turbo 4 cyl. I drove it for about 4 years as a commuter, 112 miles a day on Los Angeles freeways. I got about 22 mpg on average, would put about 30K miles per year. I loved the ease of maintenance on this car like changing bulbs, belts, and routine stuff. The seats were probably the most comfortable of any car I ever owned. The only negative about the car was the interior plastic would crack easy such as the door side pockets. The day I test drove the car, I thought it was a 6 cyl. For a 4 cyl, it really had a lot of power and it had a very quiet hum and did not have the usual 4 cyl whine high pitched the squirrels in the engine are struggling to get up to speed. This car’s turbo was really a turbo. The alignment was always true. The power mirrors, windows, and sun roof never had issues for being an older car. I drove it from 2008-2012. I sold it with 270,000 miles for $500. To this day, the guy who bought it still drives it as a back up car.

    Got a tons of questions.
How about full chemical decontamination? Like tar and iron remover?
Measuring the paint before first cut to have an idea how much "room" you have to play with?
Blowing out the pad is a very nice touch, however my advice to use an empty bucket, spray it wet and blow the pad in the bucket.
This way dust wont stick back on the car.
Go over the car with IPA and a microfiber before apply any wax or sealant.
Other than that, i do appreciate the effort you've done to bring it back to shine. Cheers.

The hub caps improves the overall look of the car because the steel wheels are too rough looking for this car. This car has an upscale aspiration and the wheel covers reinforces this. Im not sure about the greasy dressing on the black parts, especially the front bumper looks oily.

I have a 91 that has been in my family since new. I have restored it in side and out. I did a complete restoration paint job on mine as well as a front to back tires to antenna tip rebuild. So I have some experience with some of the age induced issues that escaped the fine engineering of this car. The first thing I would replace is the plastic fuel door hinge. Those break over time and when it does you will loose you gas door. Sure you can possibly find another one but it is unlikely the paint will match even if you find the correct color. Also the moldings and bumpers appear to have been black but they were actually a dark gray. There is a spay can charcoal (not black) bumper paint that works well. I would not take off the moldings because the clips break.

@@ejoautovideos Good to see some well-thought-out care for such a Nordic classic. The 740 was-and still is- a good car. Lots of room, clean lines, takes its owner where he or she wants to go. In some style, I might add. Not as nice as an 850 or an S80 , but not far off. What´s the next step? Why not try giving her a proper audio system, based on the original speaker placement points and sizes, plus a small plug-and-play amp? Dynaudio makes a setup for these cars which sounds absolutely gorgeous if the doors are properly "silenced". If you can´t find it, check Rockford Fosgate out. This is a perfect "sleeper" car! A car in which the system won´t necessarily be seen, but is definitely heard.

The Hydra alloy wheels were in fact designed for the 700-series, as well. The refreshed 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo (the very last model year of the 740 Turbo) was fitted with 16-inch Hydra alloys as standard equipment, at least on the Swedish market.

I just fell in love with old volvos all over again. I prefer the 740 with the hubcaps. The 240 can get away with the raw look, but the 740 appears too rough and unfinished without the covers, imho.

awesome transformation, and definitely run it with the hubcaps! Just a couple things things of note... the lights (front and back) can be polished as well. You'll be amazed how much oxidization are one old lenses (including glass ones), even if it's not obvious. As for the interior, I'd go a step further by doing a deep extraction given the age of the car, and running an ionizer. The interior will be super clean and sanitized, and odour free

Great work the car looks amazing. I like the steel wheels as I have never been a fan of wheel covers, but I would add chrome or black wheel nuts and a center cap. Keep up the good work!

I just got my red 940 polished and ceramic coated by a pro and looks gorgoeus. Ok, 90% gorgeus, I have to replace a cracked bumper and re-paint the bumper trims + glue the prancing moose emblems on :D

What a beautiful old 740. My favorite car of all time. I actually owned 2 of these but also 2 Volvo 760gle with the PRV V6. Rare. But excellent cars as well if 87-90 USA

I had a 1989 maroon sedan with a b230f m90, aircon (manual), sunroof and cruise. This was years ago, sadly these cars are getting rarer and expensive here in NL.

Helluva job, sir. You did an excellent job on this ol' girl. My view: I'd not go with the hubcabs nor with these rims. Find a used set of factory alu rims, the ones that came on the 760 of that model year. Looks much better and won't cost you much.

the 1st "after" pic shows vast improvement to the car... but the non-black wheel wells really let it down. I'm sure they weren't left dirty, so thinking a quick spray (black paint or plastic restorer) could do the trick. paint came out amazing! Hubcaps on please.

      @ejoautovideos  5 років тому

Yes, there is very old discolored under coating in the wheel wells. Not sure if I'm going to do something about it though because it's a very high quality under coat that I cant get a hold of now.

Winter w/o hubcaps, hubcaps on the remainder of the year. Personal recommendation would be the Volvo Hydra wheels or perhaps the 1000 Miglia 5-star wheels that were on those Volvo’s very often.

I would say both, the hubcaps & the alloy trims, for winter you can use the the steel trims, & for when there is no snow, some nice looking alloys, would fit nice, best of two worlds, also if you can get the red reflector panel, that goes where the license plate goes it would add a nice touch, it was a Volvo part, I had one on my 1981 244 GL it added that special touch.
