  • DIY - Hobie Rudder Line Repair - Replacement
    static.hobieca...
    I had a little mishap while landing my kayak. The rudder got stuck and when I forced it to try and lift it, the rudder line broke. In this video, I go through the process of either splicing in a section to repair a broken line or to repair the line entirely. Rather than buy the expensive Hobie Spectra line, I purchased some similar braided dacron line or $.28 a foot at West Marine. If you have a broken or soon to be broken rudder line, don't hesitate to give it a try yourself.

    Perfect timing. Finally got my roof rack and am ready to take my new hobie out. I am pretty sure the rudder line is muffed up and needed some directions, but I have a different model.

      The rudder systems if it is a twist and stow will all be the same on all the Hobies. The shells are different but the components are generally the same.

    Thanks for another excellent vid! Yes, I think WestMarine carries either the same or a very similar Spectra line that is an ideal replacement for the OEM lines. This vid reminds me that I probably should go buy 5' or 10' of it right now so I have it on hand when the inevitable break happens and I won't be stuck in that classic "night before" a trip situation.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      Hey Beau, the kayak is just something that you sit on and gets you to the fishing spot. Don't worry about all the bells and whistles. The more experience you gain, the more stuff you stop using. Your better off just keeping the basic stuff you need. Do you watch Rokkit Kit. Great youtube channel.

    5:25 that is certainly two loops but they are not joined as I would think. an over-hand knot loop join is where you slip each loop through each other and then the tag end of one is brought through the loop of it's end thus the loops grab each other. I think you did it this way because you simply couldn't do a loop knot because you ran the rudder line in through the aft line guide tube. I think you did this because you can feed the spectra or equivalent through that way, just not the other way, which would have enabled the loop knot. What's frustrating me on my Revo now is this very thing, i'm going to have to just use a square knot (with a drop of CA glue) to join the two pieces. If I could run the new section from the fwd end of the tube guide I could do a simple loop join. I have even used 20lb mono to pull the section from fwd to aft end and the damn new section just won't pass through the aft end of the tube guide.

    Yo, can you do a video about kayak fishing canals in strong current? I like fishing the large canals by islamorada but knowing more about the currents and fish paths would help a lot. Thanks a bunch man

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      Fish an hour before and the hour after slack tide. The fish don't like the extreme current as well as it takes too much work. You can also fish the outlet side when the current is ripping. Fish will hang out along the edges of the current where it is not so strong. Chum always helps a lot.

    How hard was it to thread the line through the tubes! Did you use a a draw string or something?

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому +1

      They have caps on each end that just pop out. The tube itself is pretty big diameter so no problem just pushing the line through.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому +1

      LOL. They are everywhere. Always. You just don't always know. The best thing is to understand them and you will not worry about it. They are just like dogs. Most are just happy go lucky and will come to you if you have food. No food and they don't care about you. Sometimes they will be nosy and will want to know what you are doing. They have no hands so they use their mouth and snout to bump. It is not aggression just being inquisitive. But, there is those few that are just plain mean and will bite. Those you just have to be aware of.
