Nothing new. 3 things have never changed throughout British history. 1: There have been a significant minority of Brits who've been Republican for 1,000 years 2: Young people tend to be republican 3: As people get older, a significant groundswell of people begin to lean towards being more monarchist as they get older. Suppose I should add a point 4. We tried getting rid of the monarchy once. The replacement was way worse so we brought it back.
And, very notably, we reformed the system when we brought the Monarchy back. We've a 1000 year old Monarchy, whose role is subject to our Democracy. I'm all for a reform, abolishing the whole thing seems stupid and a waste.
We got rid of the monarchy and got a parliamentary tyrant showcasing the worst that democracy and republicanism can offer. We restored the monarch and got one of the most popular well loved kings in British history. Maybe kings aren’t so bad after all 🙃
Exactly. The young people against monarchy in the past grow older, change their mind while new gen start another protest. We didn't see them this often since late queen had been queen in their lifetime. They were quiet but always exist.

Because it's a state occasion, the state needs a Monarch with how our states rules and workings are set out. People are idiots and understand less than % of what Monarchy is, they're informed by Disney and fairytales.

I would say keep the history alive, this is a unique identity to British History and its people. This is one reason that makes this country great. It cost this country money BUT there is no doubt that this country also benefits from them ( e.g tourism, foreign influence and more).
Look at me .look at me .look at me.look at me. They don't cost the tax payer .they get money from the crown estate. And if we voted for our head of state . We could only vote for the people mps put forward. More crooked failed mp's. We need a better alternative that doesn't attract short term political chances.
The crown estate is tax exempt, so actually they do cost the taxpayer. If they weren't "the royals", then they'd likely have to pay 100s of millions of £s in tax each year. So actually, yeah, they do cost the taxpayer. If so-called "benefits scroungers" are under fire for costing the taxpayer money, then why do these lot (who literally cost the UK economy 10x as much) get off the hook?
Where do you think the crown estate gets its money? Land is the answer. All property on Dutchy lands has to pay ground rent to the crown, untaxed, and without the right to buy as is common law. This goes for all coastal development too, so corporations drilling for oil or building off shore wind pay the crown instead of into the public purse for the privilege. All royal appointments, parties, royal gala's, travel, etc, are paid for by the government as part of their allowance. And of course things like the queens funeral and the coronation are payed for with public funds.
Ok so you don't want a monarch, you want an elected head of state as well as a prime minister. Why? Why not just have no head of state? And what would this head of state do that the government doesn't?
The historical ignorance is utterly mind-boggling. These people have the right the protest without consequences because of the history of our royalty that created modern meritocratic democracy, and today, the most egalitarian, fair societies on earth are constitutional monarchies, other than the USA, whose constitution is based on English common law, which derives from our royal past.
What we all forget is 1: If we had presidents we’d have higher costs because that’s multiple security details. 2. The taxpayer paid 86mill for the event but it made 3bill for businesses.
The royals have loads of security and police everywhere if you haven’t realised, and the wage of a president wouldn’t be around £65 million a year would it
From what I’ve heard the monarchy cost the taxpayer a fraction of what the Obama administration did per annum. I think having a monarch as head of state but with minimal executive power is inherently a good thing since it keeps the egos of our prime ministers in check, since they have to be intimidated every week by the real representative of the people. I also think the hereditary principle is also not a bad thing, there’s a reason it has been used over thousands of years by almost all developed societies - when an heir knows from an early age that they will have to undertake such responsibility in their future, they will have all the guidance and preparation they need to be suitable for that role, there’s also the fact it is a position that someone attains not by ambition but by duty, unlike politicians. Getting rid of such a historic institution would undoubtedly rid the country of a firm historical connection that always brings the country together in a positive way, especially the spectacular and beautiful celebrations that we can hold together. It’s a shame not many people give the monarchy the respect it deserves.
If you don’t want the Monarchy, then don’t appear at celebrations involving royalty. Thankfully there are more by far of us who wish to retain the Royals, what gives you the right to try and prevent our paying homage to our king. Just stay away, leave us alone. We understand that you have a different point of view, but we don’t go out of our way to stop your views. Just go home.

@@HMSBreadnought The royal family pays crown taxes and they also bring in tons of money through tourism and not including the 100 million a year raised by the charities they set up. Not bad!
They do not cost the People of the UK a Billion Pounds a year. They cost the taxpayer £1 per year per person, which is for the Protection detail and nothing more. The Crown Estates pays 100% of its substantial profits to the Exchequer; then, out of that Payment, they return 20% as the Sovereign Grant. In 2020/21 the Crown Estate was a net Contributor to the Exchequer of £251 Million. In addition, both the Monarch and The Prince of Wales pay Income tax on the Income generated from the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall which in 2020/21 amounted to some £84 Million Pounds. In addition, the royal family brings in approx £3 Billion in tourist revenue every year. Note: King George III was not a fool, The Crown Estate is Forbidden from selling any assets as they belong to the trust and there is a Caveat in the Crown Estate Trust that if the UK were to become a republic then the entire Estate would revert to the Family, so that argument is also mute.
@Not Me No it keeps things like the royal jewellery collection and the Art Gallery intact, otherwise, the Sovereign would be selling off the priceless collection each time a Monarch Died and that would just be stupid.
Funnily enough the restoration made charles the 2nd one of the most popular monarchs ever
And, very notably, we reformed the system when we brought the Monarchy back. We've a 1000 year old Monarchy, whose role is subject to our Democracy. I'm all for a reform, abolishing the whole thing seems stupid and a waste.
