Thanks For Watching - Dan - Навчання та стиль
I draw free-hand a lot and I have trouble with the proportions so this really helped thanks!
GreenTreeko 1 awesome, glad you found this helpful!
Dan Beardshaw same
I have a hard time finding what I should draw.
@@artemisbsyt105lol
All of my drawing is free - hand. It is harder to gain accuracy in likeness I think but you are not reliant on grids or tools except your eyes and pencil or charcoal. I make relative measurements like eye width to distance from chin to nose etc. I'm getting better and getting better likeness. It is difficult though. Cheers.
Do you use a physical reference like pictures?
For a guy who draws in his attic, your art is amazing.
jamesgwi thanks James
Attic Art!!
I'd say that it would be amazing even if he was living in a castle
😍 Awesome
Free-hand drawing is the only way I know how to draw. It's actually harder for me to approach something with structure. Definitely a cool demonstration and solid likeness.

Hey bro
I just started to drawing portraits, have any tips or exercise for free hand drawing?
Ive been drawing freehand since forever this vid really helped me to improve my art massively
Watching u draw.. is magical 💖
Thank you for this video! I've always drawn with grids and tools and it made me hate drawing after a while, so I've started drawing freehand, and it's so much more interesting this way. I tried starting from the eye, and ran into trouble with relative positions and proportions each time. Next time I will try starting from the nose or the ear to get more useful information about how large everything else in the drawing should be. Very helpful tip!
Your tips were all very clear, concise and helpful! I draw freehand too and it's taken many many years to perfect my technique. Looking forward to more of your videos. 👍
I'm dyslexic, and I've drawn this way all my life, and it's so cool to see someone else doing this.
I thought I was the only one. Never had art courses, and I've always loved to draw reality.
Just left a comment on another video about how I share your "unusual" style of drawing. It said how, since it is so rare, I always saw people doing it differently, so I thought I was doing it "wrong" until I found your videos today. Then I watch this one where you go into more detail about this unique style and give tips on how to make this style work better for you...which is so immensely helpful! You have no idea! Thanks again.
I’m trying the way your drawing and it works great! I love it! Because I’ve been having trouble doing real photos
You are my favourite artist UA-camr. As always helpful.
although i have been drawing for a while now i have forgot some of the basic and most important lessons so i had to go back and watch this video, there is no shame in forgetting don't let your ego stop you from re watching some of the basic lessons
I couldn't draw with Gridlines. I tried so hard but it has not been successful for me. Freehand drawing is where I am really comfortable at, but my proportions are off. Glad to have encountered your channel🙂
Great teaching Dan. I cannot believe as it looks so simple but the scaling and creating shades and tone is really amazing in your sketching. Great video tutorial. Thank you. I liked your video.
This is amazing as usual. I struggle with ears and lips. I would love to draw like you, your style is so unique
Brilliant, brilliant. Thank You dan
I'm taking Life Drawing this semester and free hand sure helps a lot while doing proportions
im having problems with my come back drawing atm and I havent drawn in so long...and it don't feel right an this video actually helped me so thank you very much sir idk I never thought of starting with the nose or starting somewhere else
I love your art style. Your so brilliant! 😉
Thank you for being a freehand artist. Too many trace anymore and call it art. Kudos for doing the harder but more artistic way!
U drawing makes it looks sooooo easy.Great work
Your vids r always great , and u draw so well^^ gj and thanks for the advice👌
Always a joy.
Thanks for the amazing advices!
I think I am going to try this. I think it might be actually easier to find the correct placements for all the facial feature in the face as in this example the ear can be used as the fleeing point or the point of origin, and then you would automatically have the correct size for the nose etc.
Better Call Saul, excellent tutorial, thank you.
wow...great tutorial Dan!!!...it is really inspiring😃😊
What kind of sorcery is this?!
Dude you're awesome!!!

Thank so much helpful
I've been drawing free hand since last year and I don't know what's happening to me sometimes. It's just I suddenly forgot how to do a free hand or something like that. There are times like that. Since I'm still studying and overwhelmed by school works and other stuffs drawing was my escape. I draw every night and I'm pretty sure I'm getting good at it but there really times where I don't know what happened to my free hand skills lol. I hope I'm not the only who feel this way. I'm self study artist and I'm gonna watch a tutorial now to pick up some tips.
You are a very good artist!
Keep up the good work👍👍👍👍👍

You have the best advices! 💙 Thank you!!
It's Nicole thank you Nicole
It's Nicole v true
I read this tip somewhere so i'm not sure if it works but its worth the try. I read that if you draw free hand from a reference you can then measure each line you have drawn and then compare it to your reference to see how accurate you were. I think this could really train your eye and let you realise how far off you actually are. Just something i saw hope it helps! :D
Ohhh myGawwwwwdddd 🔥🔥
I feel like your art is underrated
Holy crap i just realized thats what i do and apparently it is a "really unusual way to draw"! Actually im trying to find new ways even though this is what i naturally do....because when i make a mistake in proportions that means by the time i find it i can be already many hours of work in and kinda sour about having to start over. I am going to try and see if i can get comfortable with outlining first instead.
Good video
I love drawing free hand
Awesome vids. I think it just takes a ton of practice for your visual measuring to become more accurate.. not sure how else to describe it. I have an endless stack of horrible drawings and portraitures... always it came down to measuring the distance between 2 things inaccurately. Over time, that got resolved and was able to start drawing realistically without much effort
sir please make some video on use of water colors too
Hi Dan,I just want to let you know,You are one of my favorite artist and your tips are right on.I really appreciate your work,How cOOl is that?
rockymontana1 I appreciate that! thanks
A good tip is to find a black-and-white version of the reference if you drawing with graphite or charcoal.
This is why I subscribed. But I have never seen you do a drawing in color. Do you think you could try doing a drawing in color?
nice bro
Your a god
So what do you usually do as pro now - do you always measure or rather free-hand draw? Thanks for the video; your hand was like a printer :-) and the portrait turned out beautiful!
Great advice! On another note, the subject looks a lot older in grayscale. I'm guessing hair color contributes to the difference. If you wanted to change that without adding color, what would you do? Darken the hair? Remove some of the wrinkles?
im kinda conscious about my drawing, i always use free hand then school days came by and i dont have extra time to draw, today I thought of drawing again but i just feel down whenever i see my drawing it just looked horrible. and that brought me here
Fantaatic
Can you do a video of dreads/braids in real time?
It's all about relationships and measuring with your eye. Nice work.
Nice how many hours a day would it take an ole grand pa in his 50 s to do simple skeetchs' .
Dan I would like to complement you . Your skill is in my eyes is very professional .
This is the video what i was looking for. Every portrait video tutorial had some kind of measurement technique, but I am more or a freehand guy. I would like to know one thing, Is it necessary to measure the subject/object to have the proportions correct ?
Can anybody answer
No dislikes! Wow! No haters!
not related to his drawing (which is amazing) but he reminds me of Heath Ledger
Which one is better drawing a basic sketch and then add the details or drawing from on point like you ?
When I first started to learn drawing I am more on freehand one, which is kinda accurate, but when I started the grid method one it is hard for me to go back at freehand tho.
grid method is good but it's a lot more fun to do your own proportions , usually I enjoy lot more freehand works than grid ones.
Cool Kevin Costner drawing
Bro which Ball pen is best for drawings bic??&
What do you think of using one of those hand gloves made of fabric that covers one or two of the fingers that touch the page? have you tried one? Also I see you Never use your finger to smudge - yes I know that fingers have oil on them. Do you use any other tools for creating really smooth gradients? I am trying to get out of the habit of smudging with my finger it's not easy to do as I have not found anything that gives the same smoky effect.
You're the best 0_0
Certainly! YOU Dan, you always deserve a 'like'!
Q: do you ever use a magnifying glass?
Well, I have! to see some details on the reference better.
But then all of a sudden I noticed that I drew these details bigger than the rest! - like a tiny bird with a beak much too large!)
It's a shame, for the mgnfy-glass is really a great help for my eyes!
So, how can I keep the same scale when using an m.glass ...?
Would you have an idea Dan?
Alexandra Wimmer try wearing reading glasses that might help you focus when drawing at a small scale
Is it possible to only use 2b pencil on drawing realistic portrait ?
I draw freehand because that is what drawing is. If you rely in the grid you'll get use to it , and dont know what to do without it. Grids also can make the brain confused as you are focus with the lines not with the energy of the subject. My advice is to focus first on the shapes.. just add the details later... study proportions and always draw from life.
