    the visuals were breathtaking for sure, but in my opinion this Movie falls a bit apart because of the too many new elements and characters.

    Yes and no, the Maya that Weta has is not the same that one downloads from Autodesk, they have WETA M and 276 super talented software engineers, an army of the best of the best. Yes they work with Maya and Maya's API allows them to develop these technologies but to assume that its the same, is just simply not true.
    Same is true about Houdini, the Weta team has developers that are equal to guys at SideFX if not better in some cases, they are industry veterans not just coders and software developers, they not only write code but know about the real need and requirements of a real life VFX project.
    Yes they use Maya and Houdini and no, its not the same software that you download from their website.

    Now thay houdini got animation is killing maya(autodesk was wrong killing softimage, side effects got the best talent for doing animation tools from the guys the autodesk layoff)

      Houdini has always had animation. Character animation too. Not to be confused with Naiad or RealFlow

      @@user-vs9nh9if7x yes they did animation/characters deformed but we're not really usable for production, (same as modo) soft image was the king of character animation, first ones to make animation layers, logos etc... Now Houdini has way better rigging and animation tools than maya

      But studios already spent 30yrs making pipelines around Maya :( and custom tools so hardly they will change
